Who We Are

Sitar Arts Center’s vision is a city where families across the cultural, economic and racial spectrums can live and thrive and a city that fervently believes that high-quality arts education and transformative arts experiences for all are essential.

Our mission is to offer possibilities that transform the lives of children and teens born into a world of unequal access to opportunity.

We engage children and teens in the highest quality visual, performing and digital arts. We teach the arts so that our students learn about themselves and gain critical life skills. We create community for students and their families and we are an untiring voice on their behalf.

What Volunteers Do

Sitar provides multidisciplinary arts education to the children and youth of Washington, DC in a nurturing, creative community where young people discover their inherent talents and gifts. Fostering personal and artistic growth through the visual arts, music, drama, dance, digital arts, and creative writing, the Center offers after-school, weekend, and summer classes to more than 900 students a year, 80 percent of whom come from households with low incomes.

Volunteers are the heart of Sitar Arts Center. Each week, more than 100 volunteers and partner organizations teach approximately 100 classes in visual art, dance, creative writing, drama, music, digital arts, and approximately 100 private music lessons in our instrumental music academy.

Together with a network of premier partnering arts organizations such as The Washington Ballet, DC Jazz Festival, the National Symphony Orchestra, and Washington Performing Arts our passionate volunteer faculty makes a lasting impact on our students’ lives.
