Who We Are

The NIH Philharmonia is an all-volunteer organization founded for the purpose of bringing together the dedicated musical talent of NIH researchers, federal workers, and the surrounding community.  The orchestra is affiliated with the NIH Recreation and Welfare Organization.

NIH Philharmonia performs free and educational classical music concerts to the community in an intimate and unique concert experience that engages concertgoers of all ages. Presented with a high level of musical excellence, the annual concert series includes well-known works, new works, and pieces not often performed even by professional orchestras. Feedback from the NIH Philharmonia's audiences reveals a consistently high level of satisfaction for both experienced and new attendees.

By offering free, high-quality concerts in a less formal setting than area concert halls, and drawing on the talents of those working at NIH and elsewhere in Montgomery County, the orchestra builds community and inspires a greater awareness of and appreciation for classical music in all its forms–including the works of new composers.

A portion of donations collected goes to the NIH Charities including Children’s Inn.

What Volunteers Do

Perfect SSL Opportunity for MCPS Student Musicians and or classical music fans! MCPS Student musicians can further their knowledge of compositions and see an orchestra in action close up  ---- and also perform a valuable service to the community by serving as ushers for NIH Phil concerts.

Concertgoers need assistance, which students are uniquely qualified to provide, in using a QR code to see the program for the evening and also to make donations through Venmo. Help with set up of folding chairs before and breaking down after is also needed.
