The Black Justice Initiative is a community‑based organization dedicated to justice, empowerment, and second chances. We support returning citizens as they transition back into the community, provide educational programs that teach individuals their legal rights, and advocate for youth impacted by the juvenile legal system. Our mission is to break cycles of harm by offering resources, knowledge, and advocacy that help individuals and families thrive. We believe in fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all, and we work to build stronger, safer communities through collective action. At our core, we value justice, community, empowerment, and youth leadership — because young people are not just the future, they are an essential part of the work we do today.
What Volunteers Do
Volunteers with the Black Justice Initiative play an important role in strengthening our community and supporting people who are often overlooked. Middle and high school volunteers help returning citizens by organizing resource drives, preparing welcome kits, and assisting with reentry support materials. They also support our “Know Your Rights” workshops by helping set up events, greeting attendees, distributing materials, and sharing information with community members. Volunteers contribute to our juvenile advocacy work by helping create safe, positive spaces for youth to learn about their rights and participate in empowerment activities. Throughout the year, volunteers assist with community events, outreach efforts, and service projects that uplift individuals and families. While serving, young people also build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills — earning service hours while making a meaningful impact.
