Who We Are

Strong Families Initiative (SFI) is a Montgomery County funded program executed by Catholic Charities.

The Strong Families Initiative (SFI) program works with select parishes, schools, and community-based organizations, to identify youth and parents/guardians needing an outlet to discuss the hardships they are encountering or may encounter in the future. Youth groups run for 12 weeks and are separated by gender (for high school groups).

What Volunteers Do

SFI provides youth with group circles where they can safely discuss difficulties while also learning the characteristics needed to transition into positive adults. Parent groups are for parents interested in building community, especially those who may be having a tough time with their children at home (children adjusting to a new country, new home situation, etc) or simply want a space to establish new weekly goals and to challenge themselves on improving/maintaining positive family communication. Dinner is provided in both groups.

Selected students who would like to earn SSL hours would participate as a "positive youth mentor". Assisting with creating a comfortable and safe environment for other youth to share vulnerable experiences as well. Students will be asked to assist with themes from the program and/or creating a specific topic for youth. Students may be asked to assist with translations and supporting/tutoring other youth.
