Reach's Housing Program is seeking volunteers to present workshops covering various topics (including but not limited to emergency preparedness, meditation, nutrition, and physical fitness) to small groups of men and/or women at Reach's Rockland and Jefferson Houses. Workshop content must be pre-approved by the program manager. Requires a background check. 

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Takoma Park in Takoma Park, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.   

ATTENTION - This position is only available when MCPS schools are in session and operate under normal situation .

Classics AAU Basketball is seeking volunteer coaches for its AAU club youth teams for 2025 and 2026 through out the year . Coaching commitment is typically two practices/week and then tournaments and league games on most weekends throughout the year. Coach travel and related expenses are reimbursable or deductible on taxes as a volunteer.

Must have at least experience of playing high school and/or college sports and a desire and commitment to coach youth sports. Basketball specific experience a plus. 

Must have clean background investigation through Lexis/Nexis and subject to AAU membership acceptance. 

Getting Into It: After an initial phone interview with AAU club president and other coach(es) as needed, we then follow-up by an in-situ evaluation on the court coaching practices of preferred age group/gender players. 

Must complete Positive Coaching Alliance and other AAU online courses in Youth Protection and AAU Coaches Excellence Course within 60 days

The Latino Student Fund's Tutoring Program provides free support and academic assistance to Washington metropolitan area students to ensure their academic success. We offer individualized tutoring to support students from PreK through 12th grade in math and reading.

Science is Elemental runs integrated science workshops. We want kids to have fun doing what they love to do such as art. music and sports, while learning some science. SIE's goal is to reach those kids that don't yet know that they like science. While we are thrilled to have high school students helping out, and welcome their participation, many of our workshops occur during the school day, when they are not available. SIE is seeking professionals with some time during the day. Retirees or near-retirees would be fantastic, particularly those with a science or engineering background. The workshops can occur anywhere in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Help welcome refugee youth to Maryland! Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resume, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. 

The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or higher education. 

Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Volunteers are encouraged to meet youth outside of their homes at coffee shops or in public places.

Time commitment: 10 hours per month for 6 months, although this time commitment is very flexible. If you are interested in using your knowledge of your community to help newcomers to Maryland, please respond!

This opportunity may be virtually only, in person, or hybrid.   

As a Community Bridges (CB) mentor, you will be matched one-on-one with a high school-aged participant in our program for one academic year (September or month of match-June) with the option to extend. Through a closely formed relationship, your time and support can help empower your mentee to be a successful student, an engaged community member, and a confident leader. In return, we hope you gain personal fulfillment as a contributor to the community and the future generation of female leaders.

The CB Mentor Program continues this quest with the aim for mentors, mentees, staff, and organizational practices to promote accessibility, cultural humility, and more equitable distribution of resources. This year, Community Bridges served 464 students in grades 4-12. 96% of our students are first-generation with 44% of families identifying as Hispanic and 42% as Black or African. The most reported languages spoken at home are Spanish, Amharic, and French. Ideal mentors are young professionals and leaders who have experience and are comfortable working within these communities. We are looking for mentors to have critical conversations with their mentees surrounding topics, but not limited to, social injustice, racism, and healthy relationships. We are seeking individuals, family members and parents who have a connection to Osteogenesis Imperfecta that will be interested in serving on the 2026 DC Fine Wines Gala Committee. This fundraiser includes dinner, cocktails, live and silent auctions and a Fund the Mission moment. The committee will meet twice in person and will hold monthly meetings via Zoom. We need individuals who are willing to dedicate their time and effort to promoting awareness of osteogenesis imperfecta and contribute their talents and skills to a Gala committee.

We are seeking facilitators for our Good Grief Club meetings. Good Grief Clubs offer peer support in a safe environment for children in grades K-12 to discuss their feelings about the death of a loved one. The support groups run for 7 weeks and help children explore feelings, develop healthy coping strategies, and find comfort and safety in learning that they are not alone. Good Grief Club facilitators complete both the Volunteer Training and Good Grief Club Training. The Good Grief Club Training is offered on two weekdays. When they are assigned to a school, they co-facilitate seven weekly sessions with the school counselor. Depending on the ages of the children, sessions range from 30 to 50 minutes. Volunteers must complete the three-day basic volunteer training and the additional Good Grief Club training. Volunteers must complete a background check. Good Grief Clubs are offered primarily through Montgomery County Public Schools.

Account Usage:

Join Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland's Crew Leader team, a dedicated group of skilled construction volunteers. Crew Leaders are the backbone of the construction department.  They work alongside Habitat's licensed Construction crew and work on new construction, rehabilitation of vacant homes, and repair work throughout our community.  Crew Leaders oversee small groups of unskilled volunteers, helping to ensure their safety and the successful completion of their assigned construction task.  Crew leaders need some construction skills, but can learn more skills from our constructions staff.  Being a Crew Leader is a fun way to use your current skills, learn new skills, give back to the community, and get to know other incredible volunteers!

Key Responsibilities: 

•     Oversee unskilled volunteers on Habitat construction sites, helping to ensure they are working safely and effectively.

Here's your chance to become our Potomac community's featured student writer! Write a quarterly column about upcoming activities the general public can attend at Winston Churchill High School for the Regency Record, the online community newsletter of the Regency Estates Civic Association (RECA).  Help keep local residents informed about academic, athletic, theatrical and musical happenings at WCHS!  

Criteria for successful completion:  

1.  Compile a list of academic, athletic, theatrical, and/or musical activities sponsored by WCHS that are open to the community's attendance or participation in the up-coming calendar quarter.

2.  Compose a half-page to one-page article (8.5 x 11 size paper, inclusive of text, photos/media for the community's Regency Record e-newsletter briefly describing each activity and how area residents may participate or attend.

3.  Submit the article by a deadline to be set by the Editor of the Regency Record. (The next deadline is June 6, 2025.)

4.  Respond to the Editor-in-Chief's questions -- if any -- about the content of the article.  For example, to clarify a date or time of an activity.  The article will be subject to editing by the Editor-in-Chief for content, grammar, spelling, etc.

We are seeking a volunteer to help with our graphic design for social media, newsletter and event flyer promotion. We are busy planning an exciting year of programming for 2025 and can use some help with marketing and promotion.  

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center seeks volunteers to teach or co-teach our English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes for adults (18+). These classes aim to provide our clients with basic English-speaking skills to help them communicate independently in English. 

Volunteer teachers will plan and teach basic, entry-level English as a Second Language to adult students in free classes offered at the East County Regional Service Center in Briggs Chaney, Maryland. Classes meet once a week on Wednesday evenings for 2 hours. Classes are offered per semester, with each semester running for 8 weeks. 

Skills: Fluency in English (you do not need to speak another language). An interest in working with adult students from various cultural, educational, and ethnic backgrounds. Prior teaching experience is required. Volunteers will develop the lesson plans for their classes. Patience and a sense of humor are a plus. Commitment to teaching one class per week for 8 weeks is essential.

Our volunteer friendly visitors provide social visits for Holocaust Survivors and other seniors who are socially isolated and would benefit from the interaction. Volunteers are matched 1-on-1 with a senior client you would visit and build a caring relationship with. Activities range from conversations, sharing stories, looking at photos, reading aloud, playing a card game, etc. Friendly visits are conducted in-person at the client's home.

The IRC in Silver Spring is now recruiting Spring 2025 interns! IRC internships give interns the opportunity to work directly with refugees to support them in accomplishing tasks needed to live successfully in the U.S. We offer 17 unique internships that provide a wide variety of opportunities to gain direct exposure to the refugee resettlement sector.

The IRC was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world providing humanitarian support. In Silver Spring, the IRC works with refugees the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.

·       Anti-Trafficking: The Anti-Trafficking Intern will work in close coordination with the case management teams to serve survivors of human trafficking who are struggling to navigate various systems to access resources and services.

·       Asylee & Humanitarian Parolee Casework: The Asylee & Humanitarian Parolee Casework team is the first point of contact for asylee clients. Caseworkers provide 8 months of case management to asylees. The services include providing monthly cash assistance, ensuring that clients apply for public benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, ensuring that clients apply for social security and enroll in health insurance and ESL classes. 

·       Career Development: The Career Development Program assists employed clients in securing job upgrades to improve economic conditions and align with career history and/or career objectives. The intern will work closely with the Career Development team and Financial Capabilities program to promote client self-sufficiency and encourage clients to work towards long-term career goals.

·       Community Engagement: The aim of community engagement is to establish strong, mutually beneficial connections between the community and the IRC in Silver Spring order to garner monetary, in-kind and volunteer resources for refugee clients. The community engagement intern supports the administration of the family mentor program.  

·       Development: The development team focuses on securing funding for IRC offices; assisting with donor prospecting, research, data collection and grant management activities.

·       Refugee Economic Empowerment: The Economic Empowerment program assists refugees to become economically self-sufficient by placing recently arrived refugees in their first job in the United States.  

·       Refugee Employment and Skill-Building: The Refugee Employment and Skill-Building Program aims to reduce barriers to self-sufficiency and employment and assist refugees to secure full-time employment. 

·       Refugee Employment Coordination: The Employment Coordination Program supports humanitarian immigrants to achieve economic self-sufficiency through engagement in work participation activities including volunteering, internship procurement, vocational English as a second language classes, and referrals to certificate-bearing professional development courses.  

·       Financial Capabilities: The Financial Capabilities program supports clients to become financially capable through financial education, coaching and providing low-interest loan products. Services include financial education and counseling that help clients understand banking, budgeting, saving, debt management, building credit and auto purchase. 

·       Gender Equity: IRC programming assists refugees to become economically self-sufficient and supports acclimatization within the United States by providing access to casework services. This role will support the IRC’s Gender Equality work, cross-cutting programmatically and departmentally to support the administration of equitable services and the proper consideration of gender concerns in programmatic and departmental initiatives. 

·       Immigration Legal Services: The IRC's Immigration Department provides high quality, low-cost immigration services, including filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e. green cards), work authorization, naturalization, family reunification for refugees, asylees, victims of trafficking and other immigrants. 

·       Operations: IRC's Operations Team in Silver Spring, Maryland, supports operations functions and provides related administrative support, resulting in a well-functioning, compliant environment for staff, clients, and partners. This is a challenging position that requires strong organization, creative problem-solving, personal initiative, and the ability to work well in a multicultural and fast -paced environment.

·       Refugee Walk-in Services: The Intake program is the first point of contact to all “walk-in” clients that visit the IRC in Silver Spring. We provide fast track enrollment in public benefits and referrals to internal and/or external resources and programs as needed. 

·       Extended Case Management: The Extended Case Management (ECM) team provides case management services to up to 400 new clients each year. The team works directly with new refugees, asylees, parolees, and other humanitarian immigrants resettling in the DC Metro area, including Haitian, Ukrainian, Latin American, African, and Middle Eastern individuals; utilizing a holistic 2Gen household approach for the families served, the team addresses both short-term and long-term barriers to support overall well-being in the US.

·       Refugee Health and Social Integration: The refugee health and social integration intern will work in close coordination with the case management teams to serve refugees and other vulnerable immigrants who are struggling to navigate various systems to access resources and services.

·       Refugee Resettlement: The Refugee Resettlement team supports refugees during their first eight months in the United States. The housing team prepares apartments for new families. Caseworkers connect refugees with services include providing monthly cash assistance, ensuring that clients apply for public benefits such Medicaid, food stamps, social security and enroll in health insurance and ESL classes. The cultural orientation team introduce refugees to U.S. customs and systems. 

·       Youth Program: The IRC’s Youth Program works to support the integration of school-age recently arrived refugees and asylees. Interns will support the enrolling of new clients in the youth program and completing individual service plans for each individual client. 

All selected interns must undergo and clear a background and reference check in order to intern with the Silver Spring office. We ask that candidates make a $30 donation to help us cover the associated costs. Currently, 87% of our funding goes directly to programming to support our clients, and your help to cover this cost will ensure that no funding is directed away from serving our clients. Instructions will be provided after you have been selected to intern or volunteer. The IRC is not able to sponsor visas.  

The ability to work in-person at least one day per week is required. Internships require a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week. Spring interns are expected to begin their internship by attending an in-person intern orientation on January 27th, 2025, from 9:15AM-3:30PM. The Spring internship terms ends on May 16th, 2025. Please note, the deadline to apply for Spring 2025 internships is January 6, 2025.

Internships with the IRC in Silver Spring are unpaid. Spring 2025 interns may be eligible for per diem reimbursement at the rate of $15/day to offset the costs of food and travel. BECA is seeking Summer Camp Counselors for our annual Summer Camp, a summer bridge program for 1st – 6th-grade students from our partner schools, San Jeronimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School, in Honduras.

For interested volunteers who are not available during our summer camp weeks, we offer similar service learning volunteer opportunities for small groups - including student groups, families, and other organizations/companies.

The three-week summer camp (that happens annually - typically the last week of June through the first two weeks of July) includes fun games, activities, and literacy and math enrichment. The camp contributes to preventing summer learning loss and offers BECA's students an enriching opportunity during a time when many of their peers are still in school (public schools in Honduras operate on a February - November schedule). Our camp counselors and Counselors in Training learn just as much as our students do and have just as much fun too. 

Our counselors are a wonderfully varied group - including recent high school graduates, current college students on summer vacation, educators looking for service learning summer opportunities, and even retirees from all over the world. 

All Summer Camp Counselors (and other service learning volunteers) connect with the BECA team and each other via email and two onboarding video calls prior to coming to Honduras to discuss the following:

packing/arriving in-country

brainstorming the summer camp theme

lesson planning topics for reading & writing, arts & crafts, and physical education

We kick off with a 3-4 day orientation in-country (shorter for shorter experiences)

Summer Camp runs 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Monday through Friday

In the afternoons, the team is busy completing a service project, participating in a reflection series, going on home visits, or participating in team bonding activities

Because the Summer Camp is a supplemental program, BECA recoups the program’s expenses through donations paid by Summer Camp Counselors and CITs. We ask that you contribute or fundraise $1,500 for the BECA program to help defray costs (staff support, food, accommodation, and training). A limited number of reduced contribution slots may be available. If you are interested in a service learning experience for your group, we are happy to discuss a fee structure that makes sense for all. We can also help groups/individuals set up a fundraising page using our networkforgood platform.

For current college students and educators, please note that volunteers in the past have successfully applied for on-campus grant monies or local grant opportunities to cover this expense and travel. Circle of Rights Inc. is looking for language translators to translate our English presentation on Heart Disease and Stroke so that we may present to in alternate languages to other communities.

Located in Montgomery County, Circle of Rights is a non-profit organization for stroke prevention and healthy living. Circle of Rights is here to educate on topics such as heart disease, stroke, cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes.

During the COVID pandemic, Circle of Rights had limited in-person presentation opportunities. In FY23, we will expand our outreach, giving health presentations in underserved communities. Since we did this for the 12 years leading up to COVID, we have presentation and handout material (in English, Spanish, Amharic, and Korean), as well as locations throughout the County where we have previously done these presentations. We need adults who are willing to learn the material and present on the topic. (Zip Code below was a requirement, but we present throughout the County.)

Located in Montgomery and Prince Georges County, Circle of Rights is a non-profit organization for stroke prevention and healthy living. Circle of Rights is here to educate on topics such as heart disease, stroke, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and goal-setting in 15 different languages. Organization structure includes Group Managers, Social Managers, and translators in each of the different languages.

Circle of Rights is interested in getting Stand-In Social Managers who cannot speak the alternate language, but can stand-in until a bilingual Social Manager is found. This person will advertise Facebook pages on alternate social media sites, like reddit.com. We are missing Social Managers in Vietnamese, Spanish, and Hindi. Other Social Managers do not have the social media skills to do what we're asking them to do. You will have at least one, and sometimes as many as six bilingual people in your group to call on to create text in the alternate language. This is a learning experience that you can't miss!

We are looking for a volunteer to provide clerical support for our nonprofit organization. Our office is open daily from 9:00 - 5:00, but the schedule is flexible for a volunteer. We'd like a commitment of at least two days a week for at least 2 hours per day.  Help is needed during the months of August and September and also during the school year, if the volunteer is available.

Clerical support will include such duties as directing phone calls, general organizing and filing, copying administrative paperwork or print material for our science or language classes, laminating, taking inventory of office supplies, preparing envelopes for flyer distribution, helping source program materials online, compiling hiring packets, packing materials kits for teachers, and other support services as needed.

Requirements are: Excellent customer service; ability to work independently; organized and attention to detail; Microsoft Office skills; previous office experience; Professional Working Proficiency in English; Spanish or French skills a plus.

We are in great need of Spanish-speaking Wish Granters! Work in teams of two with wish children and their families to help make wishes come true. This involves conducting an initial interview with the family to determine the child's wish, working with Make-A-Wish® staff to help fulfill the wish and throwing a wish party for the child when the wish is granted. Make-A-Wish staff will handle the major details of the wish. We ask volunteers to be the direct point of contact with the family, and most importantly, to keep the child excited about the wish prior to its granting! This is a long term volunteer opportunity. Time commitment depends on the type of wish you are working on and how many at one time. The wish interview and granting almost always take place in the evening or on a weekend. You schedule this with the family and your wish partner. Flexibility in your evening and weekend schedule is fairly important. Wish-granting volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation. Also required are a signed Conflict of Interest/Ethics Agreement (annual), cleared background check and a one-day training session. Background checks must be updated every three years.

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center seeks volunteers to teach or co-teach our offered Computer Skills Class for adults (18yrs +).

Community members are eager to learn these basic and essential computer skills. Class covers computer fundamentals, Microsoft Office  (basic introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet and Email), Introduction to Google docs (basic word and google sheets). These classes intend to provide our clients with the skills to independently use the computer, create simple documents and search for resources online.

We have a great curriculum and all teaching materials available. Our teaching materials are reviewed and updated yearly. Ongoing support and training will be available to you.

We have classes that are taught in English, and we have classes that are taught in Spanish. Teaching experience desired, but not required.

Our FALL 2022 classes are about to start and run for 8 weeks (once a week, for 2hrs). Students are older adults eager to learn or brush up on their basic computer skills for job opportunities, navigate emails, and/or to perform simple and much needed tasks using the computer. All we need are volunteers to lead the classes!

All classes are taught using the Zoom online platform (provided by the Gilchrist Center).

The Gilchrist Team

Serve as a mentor and adult leader with one of our Clubs throughout the county. We have high school groups in Silver Spring, Rockville, and Poolesville. A middle school group in Gaithersburg, serving students from around the county, as well as a high school group for Spanish speaking teens in Gaithersburg. We also serve teen parents and their children in Montgomery County through our YoungLives program that meets in Wheaton and Rockville.

We are a Christian based outreach program that provides a safe place for young people in the community to develop relationships with caring adults from the community who love Jesus and want to see them flourish. We offer one on one opportunities as well as group programming. Every winter we take students to camp for a weekend getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains at Rockbridge Alum Springs, and in the summer we take students to a weeklong camp, either at Rockbridge or Lake Champion in Glen Spey, NY. 

Each Club meets in different rhythms and at various points throughout the week, typically 2-4 times per month in the evenings. We provide training, background checks, and team-based onboarding for all our volunteers.

The DOCR is seeking Spanish-speaking women to assist in translating during programming for the women's group. This is a once-a-week commitment during the daytime.

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center seeks volunteers to teach or co-teach an introductory computer skills class online in Spanish.  Class includes a basic introduction to Microsoft Word, Email, and document management.  We have a great curriculum and all teaching materials available. Ongoing support will be available to you.

Classes are taught via Zoom.

We currently have openings to teach in Spanish on Saturday mornings, 11 am - 1 pm. Teaching experience preferred.

                                    Life Stories - A Project for Honoring Seniors

The Tacy Foundation proposes to encourage selected student volunteers to interview and write the stories of the incredible seniors who have built and maintained the communities where we are now privileged to live. We hope to discover and share seniors’ stories of personal, family, and work lives in the past decades. They are the heroes who, despite huge life challenges, have raised families, created charitable organizations, served their neighborhoods with vigilance for all families, and contributed with integrity through their professions and community service.   

Capturing the stories of seniors has sparked the interest of a number of young musicians. The teens' stellar efforts to bring hope and memory to seniors with their music and conversations through the past 12 years have inspired us all.  Youth have learned that these precious people are most interesting, well-educated, appreciative of youth, and devoted parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

To receive SSL hours, the student must be directly supervised by a Tacy Foundation adult volunteer or an assisted living staff member while interviewing the seniors. The interviews must be held in a public space, that is, a common area of the assisted living facility.  This requirement is designed for the student's safety. The student can draft the actual article at home.  He or she will then submit the article to the Tacy Foundation Director for review. When an article is ready, it will be published in the Foundation’s monthly newsletter.  It will also be offered to the senior facility’s newsletter for their residents and staff.  

SSL Credit is based on the hours for the interview and equivalent time writing the life story of the senior.  SSL credit will be determined as follows:

SSL Hours will be based on the length of the actual interview, some longer and some shorter than others.  Students will earn hour-for-hour the time spent conducting the interview. 

SSL Hours of transcribing the interview will vary, depending on the length of the interview.  

1 Hour of SSL Credit for transcribing 1 hour of interview.  2 hours of transcription for 2 hours of interview, and so on. 

Any photos require pre-approval by the family and senior facilities.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Long Branch Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Senior Helpline, a program of the Jewish Council for the Aging of Greater Washington, provides adults 50+ with confidential information and referral services. Using supportive listening and problem solving skills, older adult volunteers (aged 50+) are trained to identify callers' needs and provide referrals for various resources, including, but not limited to, housing, homecare, food and legal issues. Volunteers educate the callers on how to advocate for themselves and their families by providing important questions to ask when acquiring services.

Volunteers must have good communication skills in reading, writing and speaking English. Training will be provided. This program is for seniors helping seniors. 

Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one, three-hour shift, per week, in our Rockville office.

(1) Music Videos for hospitals. The Tacy Foundation receives video recordings from volunteers for hospitals and seniors in the metropolitan area of Washington/Baltimore/Wilmington/Philadelphia/New York City, the Northeast corridor. The YouTube playlists are also sent nationwide to Fisher Houses and hospitals wherever requested.  Children are invited to participate in the recording and distribution for these musical gifts. The Foundation is dedicated to sending sounds of hope and healing through music.  1 hour of SSL Credit per video.  Songs must be at least late elementary/intermediate level and range from 3 to 10 minutes in length.). Public Domain status or written permission from the publisher are required.

This is an ongoing project.  Contact The Tacy Foundation for opportunities. Videos are uploaded on the Foundation's YouTube Playlist. Each year over 300 videos are placed on a new playlist for the purpose of sending hope and healing into the communities. Thanks to technology, the music videos are placed on QR code Cards with contact information for the recipients.  This makes for easy shipping along with handmade greeting cards from volunteers. 

(2) The Tacy Foundation sponsors live music performances at NIH Clinical Research Center's Hall of Hope & Seniors Centers, and acts as liaison for American Red Cross Teen Pianists at Walter Reed-Bethesda Lobby of the America Building.   (2.0 hours of ssl credit per concert.)

(3) The Tacy Foundation sponsors Piano Pals, an internship program for teen pianists to mentor elementary school children who cannot afford music lessons at some elementary public schools' aftercare programs in Montgomery County, MD.  (1.5 hours  of SSL credit per session)

(4) The Reading Express brings a story to life through children's books. Volunteers are needed to supervise craft tables at the library and help with cleanup following the event. Playing an instrument is required for recording music and participation in live concerts. Playing an instrument, organizing lesson material and communicating with children, a congenial outgoing personality, compassion for younger children, and dependability are required for the internship/mentor in the Piano Pals Program.  (1 hour of SSL Credit per book)

5. Piano Pals® Training for Elementary School Children in Title 1
Schools: For Grades 3-5. This online class serves as preparation for mentoring when schools open and children will attend the afterschool program. Should schools be closed to afterschool activities, these classes will resume until schools open.

6. Construction volunteers work alongside Habitat’s experienced Site Supervisors and Crew Leaders, our experienced regular volunteers, and the families who will purchase Habitat homes.

Volunteers assist in a variety of tasks ranging from framing and flooring to interior carpentry and landscaping. No prior experience is necessary.

We build year-round, Wednesdays through Saturdays, and welcome anyone 18 or older who wants to help.

Volunteers will pack Weekend Smart Sack Bags Weekly for Children's Nutrition and Education.

The event will be held once a week for 2 hours at Cabin John Local Park Picnic Shelter. This is a recurring volunteer opportunity. We are looking for passionate volunteers who can commit to this program through the School Year ending in June 2025. The schedule for the weekly volunteering events will be published in December 2024.

We are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization that advocate for people with mental disorder and we are looking for Fundraising Coordinator to work with other volunteers to raise funds for the programs. Responsibilities include creating fundraising activities, coordinate with other volunteers genetic testing funding and housing for the mentally disabled.

Bare Necessities Foundation, Inc is a non-profit, ALL VOLUNTEER organization that supports and empowers local families in need by providing them with the "bare necessities" such as furniture, clothing and household goods in order to allow our families to focus their efforts and income on building better futures for themselves.

Shepherd’s Table is seeking volunteers to assist students in its Culinary Skills Training Program with life skills including study skills, job readiness,  resumes and job search skills.  We have immediate openings for volunteers, who will work with students for one or two hours per week, starting in mid-October.  Most classes will be held at Silver Spring United Methodist Church (8900 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD).  

The new Culinary Skills Training Program provides community members facing multiple barriers, such as low wages, a lack of real-life skills, or a lack of opportunities, with a path to pursue a career in the food service industry.  Students attend 12 weeks of culinary and life skills training, followed by a 4-week externship.  Volunteers will assist culinary skills students with job search skills including resumes and online applications. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

·                  Teaching, training, or facilitation experience, particularly with adults

·                  2 years' experience working with adults who have had a wide variety of life experiences

·                  Empathy, patience, flexibility

·                  Experience assisting unemployed or underemployed adults with resume development and job search skills.

Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:

#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.

#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Personalized Mentorship: Building a one-on-one relationship with participants to understand their individual needs and goals, providing tailored support and advice.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, and around the horses. We offer comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your mentoring role. Additionally, working closely with our participants and other volunteers is a unique and enriching experience that fosters personal growth and community development.

This is a part-time internship opportunity for rising grant writers.

Interns will work their negotiated schedule with our grants team and will assist with all parts of the grant writing process.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Parent homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC and are taken on weekly outings to public places where they learn to use their training in real-life situations.

Puppy Parents raise our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. Positive & Enthusiastic volunteers needed to coach with Under the Lights Youth Flag Football.  Coaching a youth sports team can be a tremendously rewarding experience, giving you the opportunity to help young players learn the game of football in a fun and safe atmosphere.   No prior coaching experience necessary - as a Under the Lights Coach, you will be given all the resources and support you need to help you succeed.

Coach team of boys and girls, ages 4-14

Coach games and practices 1 day per week

Teach players the fundamentals of the game with Emphasis on sportsmanship, fair play, and full participation

Provide a safe and fun environment for the players

Learn and follow all league rules, policies, and procedures

Puts the feelings of the players ahead of the coach’s desire to win

Assist Officers at special community events such as the County Fair and Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Monthly Ride-Along opportunity with police officers. Officer Safety, Patrol Procedures, Police Radio Communications, Traffic Laws, Report writing including criminal and civil citations, S.W.A.T., K-9, Forensics, Homicide, Narcotics & Community Engagement.

INTERN APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS (Law Enforcement Apprentice Program L.E.A.P.) Minimum age- 16 Successfully pass background check. Ability to volunteer a minimum of eight hours per week or 6 months in the program. Ability to participate in bi-weekly training that is designed to enhance intern.  Exposure to a variety of aspects of law enforcement. Be a U.S. citizen. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must have a valid green card.  

Interns typically work anytime Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Volunteers in Policing are assigned to various units within MCPD. Those interested, must submit the Volunteer Application and undergo a thorough background check including a criminal history, driving history. As part of the background check, applicants are fingerprinted and interviewed. Training is provided once the volunteer is assigned to a specific location.

The prospective Board member should have an affinity for African American history and/or historic site preservation. The ideal candidate supports the Menare Foundation mission, and develops a positive healthy learning environment for staff, fellow board members, volunteers, and the community at large.

About the Menare Foundation

The Menare Foundation, Inc. is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and restoration of Underground Railroad safehouses and environments, and to the creation of associated educational programs to support these historical sites. The historic Button Farm Living History Center, home to the Menare Foundation, is Maryland’s only living history center depicting 19th century plantation life. Button Farm features a Civil War-era Barn, Historic Outbuildings, Livestock Pens, Museum Garden, and a Slave Cemetery. Button Farm is open to the public from May through October.

Board Member Responsibilities:

Board members are required to participate on quarterly virtual calls (1.5 hours). In addition, members are expected to participate in up to two additional (1.5-2 hour) ad hoc brainstorming/strategy meetings (virtual or in-person) as needed.

interPLAY Orchestra rehearses and performs at Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda, Maryland. Our purpose is to provide a stimulating creative and unique approach to music for adults with intellectual, developmental and/or physical disabilities. Most of the Musicians in our orchestra are not able to read music, which has often been a barrier to musical expression. The Musicians work side by side with non-disabled volunteer students and adult artists.

Student (SSL) Volunteers assist interPLAY Orchestra with music operations and other orchestra support functions. Volunteers who assist our Orchestra Conductor with live rehearsals and performances are known as "Bandaides". Live rehearsals are held every Monday evening from 6:30-8:00pm, at Strathmore. 

Students who are at least 15 years old may apply to be a Bandaide. While training is available, we give preference to students who have some prior musical experience or experience working with persons with disabilities. Students who wish to do other kinds of orchestra support work are not required to have prior experience, but a desire to learn and reliability are very important. Additional support work may include clerical and administrative, inventory, event coordination, IT support, graphic design, and marketing support.  

All on-site work is supervised and performed either at Strathmore or other public venues in the Rockville area.

If you enjoy working with children and families, making crafts, doing science projects, and want to help bring local and national history to our community, come join our education team! Critical thinking is at the heart of our education programs, and we welcome volunteers who would enjoy engaging with visitors through science, art, play, and conversation. Come aboard for our monthly family days (every first Saturday of the month) or volunteer to teach a classroom activity during our school programming (Thursdays and Fridays, as booked).

Learn to operate street cars and become a voice of transit history! The dedicated members of our Operations team begin training as museum docents — the human connection to street car history and technology, guiding visitors through their museum experience. Further training may qualify them to become Conductors, who assist the Operator during street car runs. Volunteers at least age 18 with further training and having successfully completed a qualification test will have the opportunity to become one of our street car operators. Our operations team is critical for the success of interpreting our living collection of eighteen street cars and presenting them to the public!
