Members who have computers, cell phones, smart televisions and other technological tools are often asking for help with their devices. It could be helping a member set up a new printer, helping them out when their device freezes or teaching them how to use their smart TV.

Through our Tech Coaching program, members of the Village receive one-to-one tutoring on technology devices. We are seeking Volunteers who will work with members to help them gain confidence in their use of technology. This role can be done either virtually or in person depending on what the member and coach decide. Along with the orientation/training that all volunteers receive, Tech Coaches receive a training specific to this activity.

Members sometimes ask for volunteers to run errands for them especially since many are no longer able to drive themselves. Examples include: picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy, groceries from the supermarket, or taking donations to a thrift store.

Often members need help organizing a small space in their home such as a room, a cabinet or a drawer. They might ask for help with getting their documents in order at the end of the year or organizing clothes in their closets for the new season. Sometimes the request has to do with downsizing. Volunteers who would like to become Home Organizers receive a special training and often times work in pairs.

You can volunteer with Silver Spring Village as much or as little as your schedule permits. Help us prepare the to-go snack boxes that will be distributed to guests at the Lunar New Year Celebration. Volunteers will be sorting chips, candies and other small food items into to-go size boxes and labeling them. Expect to be actively sorting, standing, moving and/or packing items during the duration of the shift.

Join the litter cleanup at Twinbrook Park to take part in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. It’s a fun, hands-on way to make a real difference close to home. All supplies will be provided, and students can earn SSL hours while helping protect our waterways. Space is limited and online registration for each volunteer is required. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. City staff will be present to greet volunteers in front of the Twinbrook Community Recreation Center. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toed shoes.

Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control.(Those participating will receive double community service hours- (NOT FOR SSL). *ONLY FOR THIS SHIFT*)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

Join the City of Takoma Park in volunteering for the City's Earth Day Event! This popular annual event is held rain or shine and will take place this year on Sunday, April 12th, 2026. Volunteers are needed to support a number of activities, including set-up, breakdown, partner outreach booth support, children's activities support, bike activities support, EV showcase support, and more. This event will be held in 2 location nodes; the Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park and the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op. All volunteers will be requested to attend a mandatory in-person training in March at the City's Public Work Office ahead of the event, where node location and activities will be assigned. We will be preparing over 2000 Goody Bags to support our local teachers, first responders, the homeless and elderly communities.  We will be assembling Easter eggs for our goody bags, preparing over 200 breakfasts for the Men's homeless shelter, Germantown HELP and other assorted service projects.

Check in between 8:50am-9:05am, we will then meet briefly meet with instructions for the event and "Why we serve our local community" The actual event starts at 9:15am with clean up at 10:45am, followed by our pizza party at 11:00.  Students need to be picked up by 11:15am at the latest.

This is a popular event so sign up early.  Journey's Crossing mission is to make a positive difference in our world as we serve our local community.

The Rock Creek Conservation Corps (RC3) program provides high school students in Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC with a 6-week (June 29 to August 7) paid summer job in the conservation field. Students gain hands-on field experience, learn about environmental restoration efforts, and develop teamwork and leadership skills. Students learn about forest health, water quality, and stormwater management, and apply what they learn by participating in invasive plant removals, litter cleanups, and other related activities. Upon completion of the program, students have a wealth of knowledge and skills that they take with them in their next steps and gain a deeper connection to their community and Rock Creek. 

Eligibility:

No prior experience required! RC3 provides all necessary training and skills. Program Details:

As an RC3 member, you’ll work outdoors in Rock Creek and surrounding areas, helping to restore and protect this beautiful natural space. A majority of the program will take place outside, except when weather conditions are unsafe. - Spread salt or ice melt to prevent slipping
- Clear pathways to mailboxes, trash bins, and vehicles
- Check in with assigned households after storms to ensure safe access
- Report any hazardous conditions that require additional support

The UpCounty Hub provides fresh produce, shelf stable foods, hygiene items, and some social services for families in our community that are in need.

Volunteer duties vary from loading boxes into the cars or taking data.

TLC's exciting summer small therapeutic group programs are in search of fun, creative, and energetic volunteers. You will help our participants have a summer of fun in a variety of ways. There are exciting weekly themes, arts and crafts, yoga, music and drama and outdoor water activities on any given week. You'll engage with young children regularly and assist them in building social skills, physical strength, and improving their communication. Fun and learning are all in a day's play. Come be a part of your community and have a fantastic time this summer. We welcome volunteers who are age 16 and over. Camps run for 7 weeks. Volunteers must volunteer for a minimum of 2 full weeks (Monday-Friday), mornings, afternoons, or all day. SSL hours available. TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. Join Rockville Weed Warrior Leaders for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday. Space is limited and registration is required. Please only respond to this opportunity if you plan to attend the event. You will be working in forested areas with dense brush and may encounter thorns and sharp branches. Please dress accordingly. We recommend long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring plenty of water to drink and gloves, pruners, and loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. We’re looking for caring, reliable volunteers to help senior citizens get to the places that keep them healthy, connected, and independent. A few hours of your time can make a life‑changing difference for an older neighbor.

This workshop explores our emotions and the Brain-Gut connection as an interactive exploring the brain-gut connection and its role in emotional processing.  Blending neuroscience with music and movement, participants engage in guided movement experiences to explore fear, anger, joy, and calm. The workshop offers embodied tools for cultivating emotional awareness, regulation, and resilience through sound and movement.

Join us for this Washington Conservatory of Music faculty recital featuring Dr. Dominic Muzzi and Kevin Jang.

Ushers for this performance will need to be 16 years old! No exceptions! Ushers will be responsible for scanning tickets, seating patrons, stage guarding, and handing out programs. There may be times when ushers will help with folding programs for the next show. Ushers will need to arrive on time for the shift they have sign up for and wearing all black attire, and closed toed shoes. (No crocs). T-shirts are ok but with limited logos. No profanity. Our theatre is little chilly, even in the winter time, so we advise wearing a black sweater or sweatshirt. 

We also provide SSL forms ( Student Service Learning hours). Our forms are prefilled out. Volunteers will only need to fill out the student portion.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make cookies and other baked treats to share with food insecure families in our community that we serve. These baked treats are a nice way to provide a fun snack to go along with the other foods that we are providing for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form): 

NOTE: Items should be baked fresh the day before.  Please do not make cookies ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them.

-Please take photo of them being made and a group photo of the baked items once you've finished. 

-Cookies and muffins should be put into Ziplock bags in batches of 4 and loaves should be wrapped tightly in either Saran Wrap or a gallon size Ziplock bag. Please label them and note if nuts are present.  

-Make a log by writing down the number items made, and have your parent initial it. 

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the baked items and your log of the amounts of the items.  Please submit your work via the form only once.  

Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator.  They will then credit your hours. 

Baked goods donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your baked goods in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

We are also able to accept baked goods at the TPSS Coop (201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912) on ALL Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30am, but please let us know what dates and the amounts you are going to be donating by emailing us at thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com at least 3 days in advance.  Please note that if the weather is bad (rain/snow) you must contact us the day before so that we can give you an alternative drop off location.  Please drop off your baked goods behind the TPSS Coop building on Columbia Avenue to one of our members (not inside to a TPSS Coop employee). Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Earn up to 5 SSL hours to serve as a volunteer for Children’s Hospital’s upcoming conference in recognition of April 2026 National Youth Sports Safety Month. The Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center has partnered with the Student Athletes for Educational Opportunities (SAFEO), Inc. to host the “Sports Safety Makes Winning Possible” conference dedicated to raising awareness, education, prevention, recovery, training and rehabilitation, associated with student athletes and sports-related injuries. The event will consist of a powerful panel of experts, who will engage an audience of DMV area student athletes, coaches, parents and other stakeholders in a discussion about sports safety. To participate, please select one of the following volunteer opportunities listed below.

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Build Day as we bring our student-designed conservation garden to life at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

The Spring 2026 Design+Build program is an application-only hands-on learning opportunity for teens in Montgomery County. The program will focus on creating a conservation landscape for the parking lot at

BlackRock Center for the Arts. Teens will spend five Saturdays (February 21, 28, and March 7, 14, and 21, from 1–4 pm) designing and installing the project to help improve the Seneca Creek watershed.

The UpCounty Hub is serving families in need. We provide fresh produce, shelf stable foods, emergency and hygiene items, activity kits for kids and social services for the families that we serve.

We are in need of volunteers to assist in our monthly diaper distribution/pantry at The Upcounty Hub. Volunteers' duties vary from handing out diapers to families with appointments to assisting in the food pantry. 

We have added a Tuesday shift (am and pm) to assist our Social Services Team with clients using the pantry. Diapers will NOT be distributed on Tuesday, this is a pantry only volunteer opportunity.

Small Things Matter's Crafting for Charity Program helps those in need with handmade items.  We are looking for volunteers to help us decorate bookmarks as part of our literacy program for underserved children.  We provide them with a choice of a brand new book and they also get to pick a handmade bookmark of their choice.  Encouraging a lifelong love of reading can help these children succeed in school and in life. We would love to have individuals and groups help us by decorating bookmarks.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by decorating bookmarks.

5 decorated bookmarks = 1 SSL hour of service.

-Please document your bookmark decorating by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the finished items once you've finished decorating them!

-Decorate the bookmarks either by using markers, paints, etc.  Please do not glue any 3-D items or use stickers/washi tape. Please do not include anything religious in either written words or pictures.  Do NOT sign the bookmarks with your name, etc. Take a group shot of the finished items.

Join us in honoring Earth Day with a community cleanup and gardening in Prathertown! Together, we’ll make a hands-on difference by keeping our local environment healthy and beautiful on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (weather permitting). 

Spend a Saturday outdoors enjoying the fresh air, connecting with neighbors, and helping care for our planet. Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road. In the morning we will be having a community cleanup, followed by sustainable gardening. We will work together to count and take photos of every bag of trash collected for a report to the Department of Transportation. You’re also welcome to bring a canned food item for our Earth Day food drive supporting local families.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter.

Description:

Grace Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing toiletry kits and feminine hygiene products to homeless women and children in Montgomery County and beyond. Help us make our new families feel at home!

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say, "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

Volunteers will assist in distributing boxes of food, including fruit, vegetables and canned goods, to low-income senior citizens at AHC's Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building located in Silver Spring. Volunteers will bring food inside building to 2nd floor lobby using carts & elevators. Residents will pick up food boxes.

Volunteers should be friendly and reliable, able to work both independently and in a small group. Food boxes weigh between 20-40 pounds, so volunteers must be able to lift that amount onto tables & carts.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. In serving in this capacity, your primary task will be to help our organization boost our online presence by raising brand awareness on all of our social media platforms, such as (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snap Chat, X, YouTube our online publication "The Sideline Magazine and our Podcast "Student Athlete for Life TV. We also need consulting with social media monetization and creating sales opportunities, promoting campaigns, fundraisers, events and merch sales.

The agreement will contain a confidentiality clause, proprietary information clause, and a non-compete clause to help protect the organization's information and our business.

About the Role: We are seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to manage our established grant application process. For over 12 years, GO Rides has successfully secured funding to support our essential staff and community initiatives. As our long-term Grant Coordinator prepares for retirement, we are looking for a successor to maintain this vital stream of support.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has an adoption event on Sunday February 15th at the Falls Church PetSmart.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters during the event. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check in starts at 11:30 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

The final day to sign up for any event is the Friday before that specific event.

Signing up on this platform does NOT guarantee you a volunteer spot. On the Monday before the event, our events team will reach out to reconfirm your availability. You MUST respond to that email to be added to the list of volunteers for the event.

Must be at least 7 years old to volunteer and anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent present at all times (the parent must be the one physically holding the dog's leash). Please note that you MUST have one adult in attendance for each child.

This special program celebrates the legacy and people of Prathertown, a historic African American community founded in 1883 and among the first of its kind in Maryland.

We’re seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help make this community-centered event a success.

Volunteer Roles Include:

Loading and unloading supplies from vehicles

Assisting with guest escort and check-in.

Distributing signs, information sheets, and handouts.

Setting up refreshments and snacks for participants.

Some tasks may involve standing, kneeling, or light lifting.

Gaithersburg HELP is a dedicated, all-volunteer organization that provides essential support to local communities. We are seeking a volunteer to assist clients with food and infant needs. If you live in Montgomery County, MD, we can use your help.

This volunteering responsibilities include:

Retrieving and returning voicemails.

Booking pantry appointments or deliveries based on client needs.

Registering new households in the Food Bank Manager database.

Informing clients about Gaithersburg HELP services and referring them to other teams (Rx, Transportation, etc.) as needed.

Refer callers to other resources available in the county, as needed. Keep informed of those resources as displayed on the Gaithersburg HELP webpage.

Working scheduled shifts and coordinating with the lead volunteer.

Work from home using your phone and a computer with Internet access: return calls and schedule clients to pick up food at the pantry. Call hours are Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Volunteers should be comfortable with emails, online forms, and basic online research. Commitment is 1–5 hours per week. We will provide the necessary training (max 4 hours).

This Student Service Learning (SSL) opportunity is approved for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) middle and high school students.

Students can earn SSL hours by creating handwritten encouragement cards for unhoused women and children served by Grace Helping Hands.

SSL Hour Credit (MCPS Approved)

30 encouragement cards = 1 SSL hour

• Students may earn up to 3 SSL hours per day during the school year

• Students may earn up to 6 SSL hours per day during holidays and school breaks

Guidelines:

• Messages must be kind, supportive, and appropriate for all audiences

• Do not include last names, phone numbers, email addresses, or social media handles

Submission & Verification Process
