Volunteer: English as a Second Language (ESOL) Instructor for East County (East County Regional Service Center)

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center seeks volunteers to teach or co-teach our English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes for adults (18+). These classes aim to provide our clients with basic English-speaking skills to help them communicate independently in English. 

Volunteer teachers will plan and teach basic, entry-level English as a Second Language to adult students in free classes offered at the East County Regional Service Center in Briggs Chaney, Maryland. Classes meet once a week on Wednesday evenings for 2 hours. Classes are offered per semester, with each semester running for 8 weeks. 

Skills: Fluency in English (you do not need to speak another language). An interest in working with adult students from various cultural, educational, and ethnic backgrounds. Prior teaching experience is required. Volunteers will develop the lesson plans for their classes. Patience and a sense of humor are a plus. Commitment to teaching one class per week for 8 weeks is essential. 

Days and Time: 2 hours per week. Wednesdays, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

Volunteer: Basic Computer Instructors needed for ONLINE Classes (Spanish or English Speakers)

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center seeks volunteers to teach or co-teach our offered Computer Skills Class for adults (18yrs +).

Community members are eager to learn these basic and essential computer skills. Class covers computer fundamentals, Microsoft Office  (basic introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet and Email), Introduction to Google docs (basic word and google sheets). These classes intend to provide our clients with the skills to independently use the computer, create simple documents and search for resources online.

We have a great curriculum and all teaching materials available. Our teaching materials are reviewed and updated yearly. Ongoing support and training will be available to you.

We have classes that are taught in English, and we have classes that are taught in Spanish. Teaching experience desired, but not required.

Our FALL 2022 classes are about to start and run for 8 weeks (once a week, for 2hrs). Students are older adults eager to learn or brush up on their basic computer skills for job opportunities, navigate emails, and/or to perform simple and much needed tasks using the computer. All we need are volunteers to lead the classes!

All classes are taught using the Zoom online platform (provided by the Gilchrist Center).
