We’re looking for a volunteer photographer to help capture photos of our adoptable dogs and puppies! Clear, high-quality photos play a huge role in helping animals stand out and find their forever homes by showcasing their unique personalities.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend. 

Meet at the Capital Crescent Trail where it crosses Dorset Avenue in Chevy Chase, MD 20815.  Look for us near at the Trail crossing.  There is street parking on Kennedy Drive. If you are late, find us working down towards River Road.

This MLK Day, in the spirit of Dr. King, Emmanuel Lutheran Church youth and adults will serve by--

- baking egg breakfasts to feed 200 homeless men, for Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, and

- making dogs more adoptable, by creating dog toys and blankets for Montgomery County Animal Services.

Please join in, from 10 am - noon on Jan 19, at 7730 Bradley Blvd, Bethesda, to do a bit of good and bring hope to our neighbors.

SSL hours are available. There will be snacks on hand to keep ou3 strength up. Come join us!

BP4K's mission is to Empower youth with a platform for action, advocacy, awareness, and policy engagement around environmental wellness, educational equity, and civic engagement.

With 2026 Elections upon us, BP4K is running a 2026 "Elections Voter Awareness Pledge Drive" to help promote civic engagement and our youth volunteers can play huge part in it.

To celebrate MLK Day of Service, BP4K is hosting the pledge drive at MLK Day of Service Volunteer & Resource Fair on Monday, January 19, 2026.

We are looking for middle and high school students to volunteer, they will ask fair attendees to make following pledge by filling a google form (using QR code):

Join us for a meaningful afternoon of compassion and community. Volunteers will come together to write heartfelt notes of love, hope, and encouragement for families who have experienced the devastating loss of a child before their first birthday. 

Your words can offer comfort, connection, and a reminder that these families are not alone. No writing experience is needed— just an open heart and a willingness to share kindness.

We invite you to volunteer in person on Sunday, January 25, 2026 at the Germantown Library in Maryland. Whether you stay for the full time or just a portion, your presence and participation will make a difference. We will gather 2pm-5pm. Join us!

Join Rockville Weed Warrior Leaders for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday. Space is limited and registration is required. Please only respond to this opportunity if you plan to attend the event. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an invitation for teens ages 12 to 18 to turn compassion into action and generosity into something tangible you can hold in your hands. On Monday, January 19, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Cedar Lane UU Congregation, we will come together to create care bags for people in our community experiencing food insecurity, many of them immigrants working hard to build stable lives.

This is hands-on, fast-paced, and meaningful. You will help assemble care bags filled with essential food items, practical supplies, and handwritten notes of encouragement that remind recipients they are seen and valued.

Each bag tells a story of solidarity, care, and shared humanity. Participants are encouraged to bring donations that will make an immediate impact, including maseca (corn flour), cooking oil, and diapers sizes 5 and 6. Every item you contribute becomes part of something larger than yourself.

If you are ready to do more than talk about justice, this is your moment. Bring your energy, your heart, and your sense of purpose. Come spend your morning making a difference and leave knowing you used your time, voice, and resources to help bend the world a little closer to justice.

Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 8:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control.(Those participating will receive double community service hours- (NOT FOR SSL). *ONLY FOR THIS SHIFT*)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

After you pull into the lot, please look for the yellow parking spots immediately to your right. You can park in any of the yellow parking spots in the lot. To find our warehouse entrance, look for signs for "Dogtopia" and then keep walking; our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. When you arrive please walk to the outdoor tables and ask for a staff person, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Interfaith Works Becky's House is a home that provide permanent housing, 24-hour oversight, and intensive case management services to 8 senior women with behavioral health diagnoses.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 8 clients at the IW Becky's House, located at 13023 Parkland Dr., Rockville, MD 20853. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

You can sign up for dates to provide meals here.

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. Breakfast is drop off only. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours. Please let us know at least one week in advance if you'd like to serve the meal.

If you're dropping off meals, please label the containers with the ingredients so our clients with dietary restrictions can be aware. When you arrive, you can either call our front staff at 301-933-2477 or come to the front door with your food.

The Interfaith Works New Leaf Shelter is a low-barrier, 40-bed emergency shelter serving adults of all genders. In addition to temporary shelter, the IW New Leaf Shelter also provides case management services to each client. These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 30 clients at the IW New Leaf Shelter, located at 5320 Marinelli Rd, Rockville MD, 20852. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

You can sign up to prepare a meal here.

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 8 clients at the IW Priscilla's House, located at 20201 Watkins Mill Rd, Gaithersburg, MD 20886. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).

World Cancer Day, observed every year on February 4, is a global initiative that raises awareness, promotes prevention and early detection, and mobilizes communities worldwide to take action against cancer.

As part of our World Cancer Day Youth Campaign, ASL Pink Foundation is inviting high school girls to serve as Youth Ambassadors and help spread breast cancer awareness among youth and their communities.

Youth Ambassadors will participate in an interactive, age-appropriate Breast Health Education Workshop, where they will:
-Learn key information about breast cancer and early detection
-Engage in role-play scenarios designed to build confidence and communication skills for talking about breast health and breast cancer with family and friends
-Receive informational materials to take home and share with friends, parents, guardians, and female relatives to help spread awareness beyond the workshop.                                               

-Engage in a hands-on advocacy project to develop breast cancer awareness materials that will be used for community education and outreach.

Grace Helping Hands is seeking compassionate volunteers to help collect hygiene products for homeless women and children in our community. Many go without the basic necessities that promote dignity, cleanliness, and health. You can make a real difference by organizing a donation drive or simply collecting items on your own.

We are looking for individuals, families, church groups, and community organizations to collect new, unopened hygiene products and deliver them to one of our drop-off locations. All products should be travel size.

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

About Us:

The PATESI Foundation is dedicated to advancing period equity and empowering the community through education, access, and advocacy. We believe that no one should have their potential limited by a lack of menstrual resources or understanding—and we work every day to change that.

Role Overview:

The PATESI Foundation is seeking male volunteers to serve as educators and allies.  No previous experience needed. We are inviting men who believe in dignity, equity, and community support to join our Male Ally-ship Program as volunteer educators. This is an initiative designed to equip boys and men with the knowledge and confidence to support menstrual health, reduce stigma, and stand alongside peers experiencing period poverty. Menstrual health isn’t “a women’s issue”, it’s a human issue, and we need passionate male voices to help normalize the conversation, challenge stigma, and help educate the community.

Our first event will be held on December 11th at Montgomery College, Takoma Park from 3:00-4:00 PM. More sessions coming in the new year. We are looking to start training our volunteers as soon as possible. This is more than just volunteering, it’s stepping up as a role model and helping build a world where no one is shamed, silenced, or left behind because of something as natural as a period. If you believe in equity, dignity, and community impact, we would love to hear from you!

This opportunity is especially good for groups, and can also be served by one or two volunteers. Assist our elderly client keep their yards and gardens in good shape through the growing season and/or when the leaves fall. Choose to volunteer on one day, raking leaves or trimming plants, or make it ongoing from Spring through Autumn or beyond by cutting grass as needed, weeding and trimming, clearing snow or fallen branches after storms.

Very flexible on date and time.

We are seeking volunteers aged 50+ to help children k-5 with homework and fun learning activities afterschool.  In partnership with Maryvale Elementary and Linkages to Learning 1010 1st Street Rockville, MD 20850 Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Project concepts can cover the full range of available options to incorporate skill in 3d printing, robotics, design, programming, medical and nursing care and other areas to serve the practical needs of those with disabilities or medical needs in our community.

It would be helpful to have volunteers remain active with the meetings throughout the 2025/2026 school year as it would help with the continuity of the development of the projects.

We are planning to meet weekly at Rockville Public Library or Potomac Public Library.  Participants should have an interest in helping others and some experience in one or more of the areas mentioned above. The initial meetings will be about concepts and we will collectively work to design solutions. At that point we will work with the target community of individuals who are intended to benefit from the project to further refine and test the solution.

We will be meeting Tuesdays at 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm weekly at Rockville Public Library during the 2025/2026 school year.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make frozen casseroles to share with food insecure families and individuals in our community.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made food insecure families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A casserole is a nice way to provide a hot meal for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making casseroles until schools return to normal status.  1 casserole= 1 hour of service

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

Favorite casseroles include: tuna casseroles, chili, mac and cheese, baked ziti, and chicken noodle, but all casseroles are loved!

-Please taking a photo of the casserole(s) being made and a photo of the completed casseroles

-Please use a disposable aluminum pans 9 x 13 for your dish.

-Please cook your casserole prior to freezing it.

-Please label each casserole with the name and the ingredients (for example: Chicken and Cheese Casserole: chicken,pasta, olive oil, onion, mushrooms, bread crumbs, butter, cheese). 

-Please wrap them well with aluminum foil. Please do not use the plastic cover that comes with some pans.

-Please write down the date, the number of casseroles made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it.

Casserole donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your casseroles in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

* Election Workers who previously served as an election judge in 2022 election cycle or earlier will receive a $100.00 bonus for each full Election Day and/or each Early Voting Day or $50.00 for each part-day served during the 2024 elections.

For your service, you may either earn a stipend (payment) or Student Service-Learning (SSL) Hours. Your social security number must be submitted to receive stipend (payment). This can be provided once application has been processed and submitted in EJ Connection.  If you wish to receive SSL hours for your service, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number. SSL hours and applicable form will be emailed within six weeks after the election. The SSL form must be submitted to the corresponding MCPS SSL Coordinator (MCPS list) or staff.

Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time.

Help sew comfortable pillowcases for cancer patients of all ages. Our goal is to bring comfort and brightness to hospital rooms and treatment spaces—and as Madam Sew puts it, help "reduce the fear and stress associated with a hospital stay and [remind recipients] they are not defined by their illness."

The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.
