Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Volunteer Role

Help transport and carry bed materials into homes Assemble beds (minimal assembly required; instructions provided) Make beds cozy with mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets A vehicle is required to participate. We will be traveling to multiple homes. Volunteers with trucks or vans are especially needed and appreciated, but not required. Bilingual a Plus

Why We Build: Our Mission

Across Montgomery County and the Country, too many children go to sleep without a bed of their own. SHP is a national nonprofit committed to ending childhood bedlessness, one bed at a time. Every child we serve receives a complete bed set—frame, mattress, pillows, and bedding—at no cost to their family. When you join a Build Day, you’re giving a child more than a bed—you’re giving them dignity, rest, and hope.

How You Can Help: The Volunteer Experience

As a volunteer with SHP Beds, your role is instrumental in fabricating beds for children in our community. Engage in hands-on tasks such as sanding, drilling, staining, and branding, transforming raw lumber into finished pieces of comfort. Structured as an assembly line, each station is a vital step in the full fabrication of these bed parts. Structured so anyone can join and be part of a greater cause. No Experience Needed!

Your craftsmanship directly contributes to providing a fundamental need for children who currently sleep on the floor. Whether you're a seasoned builder or new to the tools, your dedication in the workshop plays a vital part in the creation of beds that carry not just functionality but also the warmth of care and compassion.

Clear instruction and guidance provided - no experience is necessary to make a difference with SHP!

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
After each Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) bed build, all built bed material (headboards, side rails, slats, etc.) is transported from the build site and organized in our Gaithersburg storage unit. We are looking for reliable volunteers to meet us at our Gaithersburg storage facility, help unload the bed parts from our transport vehicle, and store them neatly inside the unit. This is a short but essential role that keeps our future deliveries running smoothly and ensures we are ready for the next bed delivery.

**Please Note** We are expecting this to take between 30 minutes to an hour, but we are providing a time window (earliest to latest) since actual start and end times may vary slightly depending on build end time and transport arrival.

Volunteer Role:

Meeting us at the Gaithersburg storage unit at the scheduled timeUnloading bed parts from the SHP transport vehicleCarrying and stacking materials inside the storage unit for easy accessWorking as part of a small, friendly team

Requirements:

Able to lift and carry wood bed materials Comfortable with light physical work for 30 minutes to an hour or so, depending on the size of the volunteer group and material to be stored (opportunity depends on truck arrival time but expected to be between 3:30-4:00pm window for arrival)Punctual and dependable

About Us: Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP):

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization committed to building and delivering beds to children in need — because every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Our local Montgomery chapter works year-round with volunteers and community partners to bring comfort and dignity to children across our area. We help children who’s been sleeping on the floor, on couches, or sharing overcrowded sleeping spaces.

But before we can build the beds — we need the wood.

The Opportunity – Transport Volunteer:

We’re looking for a dependable volunteer with a truck or van to assist once a month by transporting lumber from our lumber partner in Silver Spring to our storage/worksite in Frederick.

This role is crucial to keeping our builds running on schedule — because no wood means no beds.

What You'll Do:

Pick up a pre-set load of lumber from a supplier in Silver Spring, assist the team with loading.Transport and unload the lumber at our Frederick Build Warehouse.Preferred time: Friday afternoons (once per month) ⏱Time commitment: approx. 3–4 hours/month

You’re a Great Fit If You:

Have a reliable truck or van with space for transporting lumber Can lift and move lumber (with help if needed) Are dependable and have a flexible Friday afternoon schedule Believe in giving back and helping kids in your community

Every load of lumber you transport becomes the frame of a bunk bed… Every bunk bed becomes a safe, warm place for a child to rest… And every child deserves that kind of peace. Your one afternoon of service each month makes a direct, hands-on impact — helping us turn raw materials into restored hope for families in need.
