Volunteer: Earth Day Community Cleanup and Gardening

Join us in honoring Earth Day with a community cleanup and gardening in Prathertown! Together, we’ll make a hands-on difference by keeping our local environment healthy and beautiful on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (weather permitting).

Spend a Saturday outdoors enjoying the fresh air, connecting with neighbors, and helping care for our planet. Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road. In the morning we will be having a community cleanup, followed by sustainable gardening. We will work together to count and take photos of every bag of trash collected for a report to the Department of Transportation. You’re also welcome to bring a canned food item for our Earth Day food drive supporting local families.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter.

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources.

Registering

By registering, you acknowledge that volunteering may involve physical activity, handling sharp or heavy objects, and contact with unfamiliar persons or animals. Please exercise reasonable care and understand you assume any personal risk of injury or property damage.

Participants Should:

Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants

Apply sunscreen and insect repellent

Provide a contact number in case of schedule or weather updates

Bring a reusable water bottle

Arrive on time by 9 am!

Keeping all participants safe is our highest priority. Parents or guardians may contact us directly with any questions or concerns.

Contact:

info@prathertown.org - Phone: (301) 258-1003 - www.prathertown.org

Please note: No restrooms are available on-site. Breaks will be provided

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.

Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Build Day as we bring our student-designed conservation garden to life at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to dig in, plant, and learn. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll install native plants like black-eyed susans, purple coneflowers, and butterfly weed, creating a lasting outdoor classroom and gathering space for all.

Join Rock Creek Conservancy and Montgomery Parks for a litter removal restoration event at Glenmont Local Park. Trash is the visible form of stormwater pollution, a major threat to water quality and park health and its removal makes the parklands cleaner, safer, and more beautiful for all. This event is part of the Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup - a month-long push to remove litter throughout the Rock Creek watershed!

Event location, directions, and information will be sent from the event leader 48 hours prior to the event.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the work and weather. We recommend wearing sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers, including pants and long sleeves - this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like poison ivy.

Volunteer: Tree Plantings with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Help Save the Bay by planting trees! Did you know forested streamside buffers (a.k.a. "riparian buffers") have been scientifically proven to be the most effective and least costly best management practice for preventing pollution of our rivers and streams? It's a great way for farmers to improve the quality of the streams running through their farmland. Join CBF's Farm Stewardship Program as we restore these valuable resources. No experience is necessary and all supplies are provided. Families, children accompanied by an adult, and groups are all welcome. Visit www.cbf.org/mdrestoration for additional information and online registration.

Volunteer: Lockhouse 25 Quartermaster

Love history and the C&O Canal? Are you over 18 and interested in joining a team of dedicated volunteers to provide light support of an 1830s-era lockhouse and the guests who visit it? Then this may be the opportunity for you!

The C&O Canal Trust is seeking volunteer Quartermasters for our award-winning overnight interpretive program (www.canalquarters.org), in which park visitors (yes - even you!) can spend a few nights in an authentic lockkeeper's home and experience a bit of canal history for themselves.

Each house is supported by a team of volunteer Quartermasters who perform regular upkeep and light maintenance duties between guest stays, such as restocking cleaning supplies or lantern batteries, and generally keeping the house and its yard and firepit looking tidy.  In addition, Quartermasters rotate remaining on call for guests with urgent issues such as a lockout or needing basic supplies.

The ideal Quartermaster will possess some basic home care or light maintenance skills, lives relatively close by, and is friendly and generous with both the lockhouse guests and their fellow Quartermasters. They'll value the historic nature of working in a 200-year-old lockhouse in a national park and delight in sharing this unique resource with others.

For more details, please visit https://www.canaltrust.org/programs/canal-quarters/quartermasters/. We can't wait for you to join us!

Volunteer: Volunteer Needed: Green Entrepreneurship, Careers, and Tree Planting Initiative

Are you passionate about the environment and eager to make a positive impact? Join us in our Green Entrepreneurship Program, Green Careers initiative, Tree Planting, and other sustainability efforts. Your involvement will help shape a greener, more sustainable future for our community!

Together, let’s grow a brighter, greener tomorrow!

This opportunity is hybrid and will operate both in-person and virtually/remotely.

Our nonprofit organization, Live Peace Tech Corporation, will be engaging with students through a live virtual platform (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, etc.).

We will provide direct supervision by an adult nonprofit representative (who is not the student’s parent/guardian or relative) in any virtual space (including breakout sessions) for the entire session.

Please review the following information while considering this opportunity

A student’s parent/guardian must provide our organization with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:

#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.

#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Montgomery Parks can be a great place for you to do your Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award projects!

Although sometimes Park Staff have projects in mind, the number of applicants far outnumbers them. It is often up to the scout to find a suitable project. We suggest you choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore.

Park staff will work with you to review your project proposal prior to approval.  The scout will then be responsible for good communication with Park Staff, and completing the project in a timely manner.

Volunteer: A call for GARDENERS and CARPENTERS!

The G.R.OWN Foods program for girls is in need of some experienced and Master gardeners to provide periodic instruction and guidance to our group of girl gardeners in Silver Spring.

We are also in need of carpenters to help construct raised garden beds for our garden plots in Silver Spring.

G.R.OWN Foods stands for Girls Raising Our OWN Foods, and we strive to help girls get outside and learn to tend and grow a garden for their own consumption, and sell produce in their own booth in a local farmer's market.

We want to encourage healthy food choices and use gardening as a way to understand the food chain.  Importantly, we hope to work with our girls to help establish a more reasonable pace of life by practicing patience and understanding the patterns and timing of seed-time-harvest.

If you have experience with seasonal or year-round vegetable, herb, and fruit gardening, and think you could provide hands-on instruction to a small group at your convenience, we would love for you to work with us.  Workshops would take place at our garden plot in spring/summer weather-permitting, as well as indoors at library or other community-based locations in Silver Spring, Maryland.

For the fall season, we could use some expertise in how to create small indoor gardens, and how to preserve the soil and prepare the ground for winter.

In spring, we would like to learn about how to select seeds, grow seedlings, prepare fertile ground for planting, planting strategies, and various types of gardening - in and out of soil.

We are also in need of carpenters to teach our group how to build raised beds for gardening as well as indoor gardening shelves.

We hope to partner with Home Depot or Lowe's for donations of gardening and building supplies.  We would be happy to have an adult volunteer to take on establishing that partnership and soliciting donations on our behalf.

Volunteer: Help Cultivate Our Living Campus!

We have many and varied opportunities for people to help us care for our campus landscape while spending time in the great outdoors. When you come to volunteer, we’ll ask you to really get your hands dirty--weeding, raking, pruning, planting trees, shrubs, and flowers, cleaning up landscapes, mulching, or replenishing footpaths--and you will feel like you have accomplished something special when you are done. We always come up with fun, active projects that enhance the beauty of campus and engage you with nature and your fellow volunteers.

Our volunteers come from a variety of places--service organizations, fraternities and sororities, academic departments, university alumni organizations, and local high schools. No matter what your background, the Arboretum & Botanical Garden wants to benefit from your hard work.

No experience is necessary, but the work involves physical labor, such as bending, lifting, and digging.

Volunteer: Adopt A Road Program

Montgomery County's Adopt A Road (AAR) program encourages residents and businesses in the County to participate in a community activity by keeping our roadsides litter free.  Currently there are more than 5,000 volunteers who have adopted over 450 road segments in an effort to Keep Montgomery County Beautiful. You can be a part of this program too!

Your participation will help reduce trash and litter along County roads and maintain a clean and attractive environment.  Ultimately it helps protect the Chesapeake Bay.  Litter that is washed into storm drains, travels to nearby creeks, streams, major rivers, and eventually can reach the Bay.

With the amount of trash littered on the roadside every day, and budget constraints within the County resulting in less mowing and road cleaning, your involvement has becoming increasingly important. AAR allows residents to demonstrate community pride, make a positive statement for a clean and attractive community, and have a better understanding of storm water pollution. Help make Montgomery County a “Greener” place to live!

An application must be filled out in order to participate, visit: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/dot-dir/AdoptARoad/index.html
