We will be preparing over 2000 Goody bags to support our local first responders, teachers, the homeless and the elderly community.  Our projects will be assorted service projects.  We will collectively serve to make the world and our community a better place.

Check in at 8:50am.  At 9:05 am we will briefly meet for instructions and "Why We Serve Our Community".  We will wrap up with our pizza party at 10:45 am.   Students to be picked up the latest at 11:15 am.

This is a popular event so sign up early!

Volunteers work 1:1 on the tennis court with a child with autism, working on tennis, athletic and social skills. The 6-week session runs on Sundays from 1-3pm beginning Sept 13 (Oct. 25 rain date). We ask volunteers to attend at least 4 out of the 6 classes to provide consistency for the participants. Come join us- we think you will have a fun, energetic, and rewarding experience!

The Standby Guardianship Project seeks volunteers to help reach out to community during the Takoma Park Folk Festival. Sign up for one or both sessions. 10:30-1:30 and 1:30-4:30.

Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Maintenance Day as we refresh our student-designed conservation gardens at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to pull up and join us. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll pull weeds and spread a new layer of mulch to give our native plants like black-eyed susans and purple coneflowers a chance to thrive.

Many middle schools seek high school volunteers to assist with their Grade 6 Outdoor Education program, and the schools listed on the SY27MCPS HS Outdoor Ed Assistant Interest form have asked for assistance in identifying potential assistants to work with them during Outdoor Ed.   

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night environmental education program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program.   

There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.

High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

NEXT EDUCATION is seeking high school student volunteers to serve as mentors and guest speakers for younger students through our online Student Mentor Program.

Volunteer mentors will share their firsthand experiences with school clubs, extracurricular activities, academic competitions, leadership opportunities, community service, research, summer programs, and other educational enrichment activities. The goal is to help younger students better understand the opportunities available to them and make informed choices about activities that match their interests and goals.

Volunteer mentors may:

Sessions will be conducted online and coordinated by NEXT EDUCATION. Student volunteers will receive hour-for-hour SSL credit for the time they are actively providing volunteer service during live virtual sessions under the direct supervision of an adult NEXT EDUCATION nonprofit representative. NEXT EDUCATION will maintain attendance and service records and verify eligible service hours. SSL hours will not be awarded based solely on student self-reported logs.

We welcome responsible high school students who have meaningful experience in one or more extracurricular or educational activities and are interested in helping younger students learn from their experiences.

Possible presentation topics include Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, robotics, debate, academic competitions, research, volunteering, leadership, school clubs, arts and music, summer programs, and other educational or extracurricular activities.

Only students serving as approved volunteer mentors or guest speakers may earn eligible MCPS SSL hours. Students attending the program as participants do not earn SSL hours.

In the application, students will provide basic contact information and briefly describe the extracurricular activity, academic program, competition, research, leadership, service, or other educational experience they would like to share with younger students.

Our HOA needs volunteers to help set-up and clean-up for our annual picnic and also help run children's activities during the picnic (crafts and games). We have a variety of fun activities to assist with:

Moon bounce, Popcorn Machine, Cotton Candy, Spin Art, Food Distribution etc.

If you are comfortable helping children with games and crafts, working at food tables and doing some light lifting then our group would be so happy to have your help!

The UpCounty Hub is serving families in need. We provide fresh produce, shelf stable foods, emergency and hygiene items, and social services for the families that we serve.

We are in need of volunteers to assist in our monthly diaper distribution/pantry at The Upcounty Hub. Volunteers' duties vary from handing out diapers to families with appointments to assisting in the food pantry.

Drivers are needed on Thursdays to deliver food packages to the doorstep of vulnerable Upcounty families, that are not able to drive to one of our weekly distribution sites. Drivers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs.  Addresses of clients will be provided upon arrival at the Hub on delivery day. You will be delivering food directly to clients. 

Please arrive at the UpCounty Hub between 10:45am-11:00am on Thursday and pull around to the right side of the building to the loading dock. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN HANDICAP SPOTS!  If possible please try to register for this shift by the Tuesday before so we can assign boxes to the correct number of cars.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Seneca Valley Pony Club is hosting a USEA recognized event at Bittersweet Field in Poolesville on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30. This is a chance to earn up to 8 hours of SSL per day being outside and helping put on a world-class sporting event. 

We have jobs for people with no horse experience, including parking team members who help direct competitors and spectators, dressage score runners who bring scores from judges to the scoring team, show jumping jump crew who help replace poles that are knocked down and move jumps between levels and for cross country jump judges for high school age and older volunteers. 

For those who know horses we have dressage bit check and warm up, show jumping warm up, in-gate and out-gate and cross country warm up and jump judges for high school age and older volunteers.

As a 501 Science is Elemental's mission is to improve science education by fostering a deeper understanding and respect for the scientific process among all high school graduates, through starting or improving science education in the early grades. In particular, SIE seeks to bring hands-on, integrated workshops to students who do not yet show interest or aptitude in the sciences. In addition, SIE supports teachers, and seeks to introduce what scientists do to young children.

Role Description

This is a volunter role for a Board Member located in anywhere in the U.S.. The Board Member will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, ensuring the organization’s mission and goals are met efficiently. Responsibilities include attending regular board meetings, participating in fundraising activities, and assisting in policy formulation and oversight. The Board Member will also engage with various stakeholders to build and maintain relationships that support the organization's objectives. We are very interested in people with fundraising experience.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has an adoption event on Sunday, September 20th at the Falls Church PetSmart.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check-in starts at 11:45 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

The final day to sign up for any event is the Friday before that specific event.

Signing up on this platform does NOT guarantee you a volunteer spot. On the Monday before the event, our events team will reach out to reconfirm your availability. You MUST respond to that email to be added to the list of volunteers for the event.

Now, for the 58th time, we are here to help as Montgomery County children head back to school.  The kids will be excited about the start of a new school year, but many of their parents will be wondering if they can provide the nutritious food their children need to develop strong bodies and minds, and they have reason to be concerned.  

 Social safety net services have been cut for 4,900 of our county neighbors, including their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. These families are turning to food pantries like ours for help. The increase in food requests, along with the rising cost of the basic food we purchase for our pantry and a decrease in food donations, means our stock of food is low.

As you can see, your support of Bethesda Help is critical at this time. We stand ready and able to deliver food, but we need your help to keep the Bethesda Help pantry stocked.

The largest Electric Vehicle Show on the East Coast needs your help in making our event another big success again this year. The EV show is a National Drive Electric Month event and locally organized by Poolesville Green, Inc. If you love the latest in tech and cars too, this is a great opportunity for you! SSL hours provided for students.

The EV show takes place during popular the Poolesville Day street festival featuring a parade, live music, festival food and more. The EV Show is located on the western end of the festival near the corner of Fisher Ave and Elgin Rd in Poolesville, MD. Upon arrival, please check in at the tent in front of Anytime Fitness at 19942 Fisher Ave, Poolesville, MD.

Volunteer tasks include the following:

*Help with EVs in the Parade (requires walking 1.5 miles):

Carry parade banner announcing the EV portion of the parade, or
Hand out EV Show announcement fliers along the parade route to spectators
The parade activity requires volunteer to arrive no later than 8:00am

*Assist with EV driver event registration & check-in

*Hand out give-aways and brochures at the Poolesville Green table.

*Assist in receiving & packing small rechargeable electronics for recycling collection (training provided) and plastic bag collection

*Assist visitors in calculating their carbon footprint score. (Easy instructions provided)

*Assist with free prize drawing activity

*Assist in setup and breakdown of displays

*Walk the festival area with sandwich board signs to encourage visits to the EV show.

Join us for our upcoming community trash cleanup at Morris Park, Gaithersburg, on Sunday, August 30th from 2:30-5:00 PM! We’ll provide cleanup bags, gloves, trash picker sticks, water, and snack bars. Feel free to bring your own food, drinks, or gear. SSL forms will be provided afterwards! Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and bug spray if you need it!

Organized and attentive to detail. Dependable and able to complete assignments in a timely manner. Able to work independently and follow instructions. We are seeking a student musician to accompany Sunday School children as they sing during Children’s Worship in the Sunday School chapel. Pianists and students who play other suitable instruments are encouraged to apply.

Project Knitwell is an organization that uses the simple act of knitting to improve wellbeing and create connections for people facing challenging circumstances. Knitting is a proven wellness tool that reduces stress, builds community and fosters resilience.

Participants in our programs range from hospital patients and caregivers to people experiencing homelessness and refugees. All of them find solace and support in the rhythmic repetition of knitting and the camaraderie of shared learning. People like Kesha, a first-time mom who had a son in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for five months. Kesha said that learning to knit helped her relax while she was unable to take her son home and that her experience learning to knit with PK was a lifeline during that difficult time.

We are currently working at 15 sites, including several DMV area hospitals, N Street Village, Title I Schools in Fairfax County Public Schools, Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC), John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (JLG-RICA), Hopelink, USO Warrior and Family Center at Ft. Belvoir, among others. Each year we are giving out close to 800 starter kits and working with thousands of people.

Our programs make a big impact on participants, a volunteer who worked with a mom at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital who said: “Knitting was not just a way to pass the time—it was something that soothed my anxiety, gave me something to do with my nervous energy, and gave me a productive feeling I had missed during this long-term hospitalization.”

Executive Director: Lexi Keogh is Project Knitwell’s Executive Director. Lexi started at Project Knitwell in October 2023. Lexi is a nonprofit professional with over 20 years of experience in communications, fundraising, membership, and special events. She most recently served as the Executive Director of UpCycle Creative Reuse Center in Alexandria, VA, and also served as Development Director at Alice Ferguson Foundation. Prior to that, she spent 15 years in a variety of roles at the Alaska Wilderness League in Washington, DC. She has extensive nonprofit experience with an eye towards implementing sustainability in all aspects of a nonprofit -- from fundraising to organizational development and programs.

What we’re looking for:

Project Knitwell is a small organization but a mighty one! We have been able to accomplish much on a shoestring. Our paid staff are all part-time and they include an Executive Director, Admin Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator. Our programs are delivered by our 40 volunteers.

Our challenges are like most nonprofits – sustainability and continued growth. We are looking for board members who can help with that. We look for people who are passionate about what we do (provide knitting as a wellness tool) and with a variety of skills. We would like to find people who have experience with nonprofits and who can be a connector to funders/donors or contribute in other valuable ways.

Expectations of Board Members:

Length of Term: Initial term of two years, which may be renewed for successive terms of one year, with approval of the Board at the annual meeting.

Participants may choose to be dusted with color along the way or not and can make multiple trips around the one (1) mile course if they would like. It’s a free and fun way for children to burn off some excess energy, so bring them too!

Four Seasons Dancers is a non-profit dance troupe performing global-inspired dance programs in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, community events, local festivals, rehabilitation centers and other organization.

Criteria:
Our junior troupe is for students who are at least 12 years of age, currently taking dance or who have prior dance/gymnastics training and who love to perform. All students interested in being a part of the troupe must audition.

Auditions  start in AUGUST/SEPTEMBER (Gaithersburg, MD ) 

JUNIOR TROUPE INFORMATION: Costumes (for performances) will be lent to each dancer at no charge. To prepare for our programs, dancers will attend a weekly class regularly and enroll in our semester beginning September, 2026. Additional rehearsals during the week may be scheduled in preparation for performances. Students will NOT earn SSL hours for attending class rehearsals. Dancers WILL earn SSL hours during performances for members of the community.

Join Brookside Gardens as a volunteer for Children's Day.

Children and their families will explore the science and art of gardening through child-driven art projects and engaging science activities. Kids will rotate through our outdoor activity stations designed to educate and entertain.

This 6 x 35 ft garden is adjacent to our food production garden in Potomac and the native plants there are essential to providing habitat for the birds, bees and bugs that pollinate our vegetable plants. Responsibilities include, weeding, staking, mulching and, in the fall, helping to divide and relocate plants.

Elrich Seeks Applicants for Commission on Children and Youth
 
County Executive Marc Elrich is seeking applicants to fill 16 vacancies on the Commission on Children and Youth, for four individuals with recent experience in agencies providing services to children and youth, four parents of youth and young adults (between the ages of 14 and 21), one private school representative and seven youth or young adults. Three agency representatives, four parents, and four youth are eligible to apply for reappointment.
 
The 27-member Commission advises the County Executive, County Council, Department of Health and Human Services, and Board of Education on policies, programs and services that support children, youth, and their families.
 
Adult members serve three-year terms, and youth members serve one-year terms without compensation. All are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for in-person meetings attended. The Commission currently meets virtually by video- and teleconference the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Members are expected to serve on committees of the Commission and these meetings are held in the middle of the full Commission meetings.
 
Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, genders, geography, abilities, ethnicities, and ages are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Members must complete training on the Maryland Open Meetings Act, Montgomery County Ethics Law, and basic parliamentary procedure. Volunteers will work alongside Rock Creek Foundation staff, community members, and residents to beautify four of our residential homes. We are looking for six high school volunteers to help pack our Girls on the Run coach bags for the fall season.

This involves managing and directing event vendors' and exhibitors' vehicles to their assigned event spaces for off-loading of materials and directing the vehicles to appropriate parking spaces. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is hosting an adoption event on Sunday, September 6th at the Alexandria PetSmart. (3351 Richmond Highway Alexandria, VA) from 11:15 - 3:30. We could use help with handling dogs at the event or driving animals to and from the event. If you are under 18 you must have a parent present at all times. Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Spring! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start September 21st and run through December 10th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by September 2nd to receive a placement or waitlist information on September 9th.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. At WEC, we value the multilingual skills student-volunteers bring to our classrooms!

Roll up your sleeves and bring your organization to help make improvements at one of Jubilee Association of Maryland's group homes. Activities may include yard work, painting, and organizing. Wheaton is a community of diverse cultures and the parade and festival bring us together. On this day everyone can be an artist as they walk in the parade with family and neighbors, school or community organization, workmates and friends. There are no motor vehicles. There is no advertising or political campaigning - just people walking with art they can push, pull, carry, wear or perform. And everyone is walking to the arts festival in the Marian Fryer Town Plaza where there will be more than 60 tented booths of original art, three stages of continuous entertainment, and food that put Wheaton on the map. It will be diverse and inclusive. At the annual parade and festival, student volunteers may assist with check-in and set up of the exhibits and assist participants getting ready at the parade staging area, assist stage managers at the two performance stages, and staff the information booth. SSL Hours Provided. Volunteers will also receive a $5 Voucher that can be used toward the purchase of food or beverage from the festival vendors.

What is Global Rhythms?

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture presents a FREE showcase of music, dance, and storytelling from around the world. This event features performances by artists sharing traditions from a variety of cultures.

How can you help?

The early shift tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents with supplies and tables and chairs, and then helping with the flow of the event. The late shift tasks will start with helping with the flow of the event and then breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away. Please specify if you prefer to volunteer 10am-3pm or 2pm-7pm.

Good Hope Union UMC is celebrating its 156th Homecoming, and we welcome volunteers to help our congregation and neighbors gather, connect, and access community resources. Volunteers will serve alongside church members and are essential to making our events warm, organized, and welcoming to all.

Depending on the shift and your interests, volunteers may:

•Greet and check in guests, vendors, and health partners, and help visitors find their way

•Set up and break down tables, chairs, signage, and vendor and exhibitor spaces

•Staff the information and welcome table and answer general questions

•Assist health and wellness partners (African American Health Program, Black Physicians Healthcare Network, AARP Maryland, MedStar Montgomery, Adventist HealthCare) with sign-in and flow

•Support vendors and the bazaar marketplace throughout the day

•Help with hospitality — serving refreshments, keeping common areas tidy

•Distribute programs, flyers, and giveaways

•Assist guests with mobility or accessibility needs

No experience is needed, just a friendly, dependable spirit. Training and a brief orientation are provided, and adults are always on site to supervise. Montgomery County Public Schools students can earn SSL (Student Service Learning) hours for their time.

The upcoming Back to School Block Party, hosted by Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, is scheduled for Friday, September 18th from 12:30-3PM at the BlackRock Center for the Arts.

We are planning this event in partnership with the BlackRock Center and the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, and our goal is to create a fun, safe space for Upcounty youth where they can both hang out with each other and access resources most relevant to them.

We will have food, outdoor games, a small resource fair, student performances, and much more!

There will also be an opportunity to share your voice and earn SSL hours for advocacy.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to kids and young adults with special needs and is looking for high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the basketball court.  The program is run by a head coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock Creek Forest Elementary in Chevy Chase runs from 2:00 - 3:00pm every Sunday beginning September 13th and ending on October 25th. 

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian  and must be completed outside of school hours. We need writers to create interesting kitty bios for posting online. Training will be provided and all of your work can be done remotely.
