Join Montgomery Parks & Friends of Sligo Creek at a volunteer park cleanup! Help beautify your community green spaces, keep litter out of our streams, and protect wildlife!

Come out to learn how to recognize the top least-wanted invasive weeds in our area, get some fresh air, help restore habitat and potentially get a workout in the process! We will work on spreading mulch in previously cleared areas, and on removing non-native invasive vines from the park area adjacent to the high school. Our goal is to save trees from invasive vines and thereby help combat climate change. Please spread the word and join us! No experience is necessary (just a desire to learn). SSL hours are available.

This is the park directly adjacent to Richard Montgomery High School. We will meet in the park by the driveway to the bus loop  (https://goo.gl/maps/g4eg76Rk9yjbxRJK6). Street parking is available. 

Note: Volunteers 14 and under must always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Volunteers under 16 may only use tools if their parent/guardian is present and at the parent/guardian's discretion. If you are under 16, please bring a grownup.

What to Wear and Bring: We will be working in forested areas with dense brush and may encounter thorns, sharp branches and poison ivy. Wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Dress for the weather in layers. Bring plenty of water, bug spray, and pruners and loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed.

Volunteers agree to comply with the Rockville Weed Warrior Program Conditions and Safety Guidelines.

This event is not part of the Montgomery Parks Weed Warrior Program and cannot count toward Montgomery Parks Weed Warrior certification requirements. Find Montgomery Parks events here.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit organization directly with any questions and/or concerns. The nonprofit is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. For SSL hours to be added to a student’s record, students must submit MCPS Form 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verification Form, to the school SSL coordinator by the due dates on the form (no later than the last Friday in May), which can be found at bit.ly/SSLReflection. Students will need to complete sections 1 and 3 of MCPS Form 560-51 in full. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

Clarksburg Yard has adopted a Gateway Center Drive! This is a 2 -miles stretch that runs from Shawnee Lane to Clarksburg Road and is parallel to Frederick Road behind our property.

Every other month, we will be organizing a group of Middle and High School Students to clean up trash along the road. Our mission is to participate in a community activity by keeping county-owned roadsides litter free. This opportunity is held outdoors and near the roads. We are asking all volunteers to read and have an adult sign the consent form prior to the event.

*Minors will NOT be able to participate without completed consent form.*

----- What will I be doing? You will meet at 1pm at the Clarksburg Church and walk over to the designated area. You will be equipped with gloves, hefty trash bags, and pick-up tools. Stay Local Saturdays was created to celebrate Clarksburg’s vibrant local community by showcasing small businesses, makers, and community organizations in a welcoming, festive setting. Held on the second Saturday of each month, these themed events connect neighbors with high-quality local products, creative experiences, and family-friendly fun. Our goal is to support and spotlight local talent while creating meaningful opportunities for vendors and partners, and memorable gatherings that invite the community to shop local, connect, and celebrate all that Clarksburg has to offer.

What will I be doing? Volunteers will help create a positive and organized experience for everyone attending the event. Responsibilities may include helping with set-up and clean-up, greeting guests, assisting with activities, supporting local vendors or booths, helping families navigate the event, and making sure activity areas stay clean and welcoming. Volunteers may also help answer questions and assist event leaders throughout the day as needed.

The market is held outdoors, so we encourage all volunteers to bring water bottles, wear comfortable clothing, and closed-toed shoes.

The Clarksburg Farmers Market is a fun and welcoming community event where local families, students, and neighbors come together to support local vendors and enjoy time together outdoors. Throughout the market, visitors can explore fresh produce, handmade items, baked goods, local businesses, games, and activities for all ages. Our mission is to create a space that encourages community connection while supporting local farmers and small businesses.

What will I be doing? Volunteers will help create a welcoming and organized environment for guests and vendors throughout the market. Responsibilities may include helping with set-up and clean-up, assisting vendors, running games and activities for kids, greeting guests, helping with directions, and supporting the overall flow of the event. Volunteers may also help keep activity areas clean, organized, and engaging for families attending the market.

Help us with our Pride Family Day on 6/13/26! Festival runs from 11am to 2pm, volunteer shifts outlined below. Tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents with tables, chairs, and supplies, and then helping with the flow of the event, especially assisting  children with arts & crafts. Then at the end, tasks include breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away.

Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control. (Double Hours are available for individuals participating in the Maryland Community Service Program when volunteering for the Traffic Volunteer position.) (THE DOUBLE IS NOT FOR SSL)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

*To reach our warehouse, type "4924 Wyaconda Rd, North Bethesda, MD" into your GPS. This will take you directly to the entrance of the parking lot. After you pull into the lot, please look for the yellow parking spots immediately to your right. You can park in any of the yellow parking spots in the lot. Parking is not permitted in front of Dogtopia and against the fence. To find our warehouse entrance, look for signs for "Dogtopia" and then keep walking; our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. When you arrive please walk to the outdoor tables and ask for a staff person, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. Hope Connections for Cancer Support is having its largest annual fundraiser on Friday, June 5, at our Bethesda location; 10100 Laureate Way.

We need volunteers to help usher guests from the shuttle parking area to the event area.  The shift would be from 5 pm- 8 pm, and water, snacks, and dinner are included for all volunteers!  Teams of 2 or more can also volunteer together.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Mobile FARMacy Markets! Community FarmShare runs mobile FARMacy markets at 9 different locations throughout Montgomery County from June to November. In 2026 we have 4 markets in Silver Spring, 2 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Germantown, 1 in Montgomery Village, and 1 in Rockville. Volunteers are needed to help our CFS staff set up and close down the market, restock the tables, hand out info/resources and generally be a welcoming, supportive, engaging team member to provide a positive experience in the community. Working at the mobile market offers a unique experience for volunteers to be able to interact and connect with the participants of our programs.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. As a Meaningful Patient & Family Visit Volunteer, you provide emotional support, companionship, and a comforting presence to patients and their loved ones during their time in hospice care. Your role is centered on creating meaningful moments—whether through conversation, quiet companionship, or simply being present during times of need.

Responsibilities may include visiting with patients, engaging in light activities, offering a listening ear, supporting family members during visits, and helping foster a peaceful and respectful environment. Volunteers may also assist with legacy projects, such as memory sharing or letter writing, and provide gentle support during transitional moments.

This role is ideal for individuals who are compassionate, dependable, and comfortable offering support in emotionally sensitive situations. No specialized training is required—just a heart for service and a willingness to connect with others in meaningful ways. Volunteers will meet at Chapel (on the grounds) at 10:00 a.m. to be given instructions regarding the collection of flags on grave sites of our military veterans. We have 503 veterans buried at Monocacy Cemetery.

We will gather in groups of 3+ volunteers per section. Each group would walk the assigned cemetery row to collect the flags placed on Veteran grave sites.

We estimate 1 working hour for this event. All ages welcome, from 6th grade up. Hilly, rough ground must be traversed. Dress appropriately for weather of the day. We will collect flags rain or shine. 

A pre-filled SSL form will be provided for each student, who will be required to write a descriptive paragraph about this event.

Signing up to volunteer is a commitment to showing up at our event. Failure to show up means another student will have missed an opportunity to participate. 

Once all the flags have been collected, there will be a gravestone cleaning workshop for anyone wishing to participate. Cleaning supplies will be provided.

Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. 

Session dates are (roughly):

Winter session 1 Early January-mid-February; Winter session 2 mid-February-early April; Spring session mid-April-mid June; Summer sessions (1-4) mid-June-early August; Fall session 1 early September-late October; Fall session 2 late October-mid-December.

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

We are currently accepting volunteers for this summers program which starts in June of 2026. More details to follow.

Help teachers and support children throughout the day. This may include setting up and cleaning up activities, assisting before and after water play, helping with transitions, and supporting camp-wide events. Always follow the teachers’ lead—if you’re unsure, ask. Be kind, calm, and helpful. Phones should stay out of sight.

Please stay actively involved with the children. Sitting off to the side is discouraged. You can read stories, play with children, help during outdoor time, and assist teachers as needed. Weekly assignments will be given on your first day.

We work with children ages 2–5. Interact in age-appropriate ways and help keep children safe at all times. Maintain respectful physical boundaries—do not pick up children, carry them, or have them sit on your lap. You will never be asked to change diapers or clothes.

Camp runs 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please arrive by 9:00 AM for a brief meeting.

Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control. (Double Hours are available for individuals participating in the Maryland Community Service Program when volunteering for the Traffic Volunteer position.) (THE DOUBLE IS NOT FOR SSL)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Camp Counselors are required to volunteer for at least one week-long camp totaling 40 hours per session (20 hours for half-day preschool camps). Camps run Monday through Friday. All applicants must attend a Camp Counselor Training on Saturday, June 13 from 10am to 2pm at Locust Grove Nature Center. Camp Counselors must be comfortable working outside for the majority of their shift in variable conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and mud. Camp activities make use of our various outdoor areas including the nature play space, the creek, campfire rings, outdoor classrooms, and our natural surface trails. All volunteers are expected to show up for their shift on time, be fully engaged with their group, report incidents or safety concerns to staff immediately, and proactively work to create a positive camp atmosphere for all. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and submit to a background check.

Seeking volunteers for our overnight weekend camp, Camp Erin, for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp offered to children ages 6 through 17 and includes age-appropriate discussions and fun-filled creative experiences designed to help children share their feelings with their peers who are in similar situations. Camp Erin is offered in partnership between CaringMatters and Bar-T, a premier childcare provider. Camp Erin Montgomery County is scheduled to be held April 24-26, 2026 at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick.

We need adult volunteers who serve in a variety of roles. We especially need volunteers who can serve as a "Big Buddy" to a child who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. A Big Buddy provides caring support to his or her assigned Little Buddy by listening to the child discuss the loss, both in the supervised group sessions and throughout the camp events.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for vaccinated individuals to help us pack and distribute food to the families that we serve in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These staples and fresh produce help them with their food insecurity.  

Teens and Adults needed to help pack produce EVERY Friday from 7:30am-9:30am at the TPSS Coop, 201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912.  SSL hours and Community service hours awarded.

Teens and Adults needed to help pack produce on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month from 9am-11:30am at the TP Seventh Day Adventist Church Center (6810 Eastern Ave NW, Washington, DC 20012).  SSL hours and Community service hours awarded.

This opportunity is especially good for groups, and can also be served by one or two volunteers. MUM needs volunteer drivers willing to pick-up rescued food from local partners in the Mid-County area and deliver to our office. Drivers need to have flexible hours, in most cases we are given short notice for pick-up. Driver must have a reliable car.

The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Our goal is to help children learn about gardening and understand the importance of sustaining their environment.

Environmental Educator Assistants provide high-quality programming and interpretive experiences for our participants and guests. They both assist naturalists during various programs (school programs, scout programs, public programs, birthday parties, etc.) as well as design and facilitate independent interpretive stations. This position includes public speaking, program set-up/tear-down, animal handling, writing interpretive station outlines, and using biofacts (skulls, pelts, feathers, etc.).

Environmental Educator Assistants will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, comfort in working with all ages and abilities, and a passion for connecting with others. Volunteers will collaborate with nature center staff to develop and implement environmental education-themed activities for the general public and for special events at CCNC. Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Fingerprinting and background check are required as you will be working closely with children.

Trail Guardians help to keep the trails in our surrounding forest preserve clean and well maintained. This position includes picking up litter/recycling and keeping trail borders maintained. All work is done independently without the assistance of a naturalist.

Trail Guardians must demonstrate a love of the outdoors. Volunteers will receive an orientation course as well as direct guidance on where and when to perform the work. Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

Come out and help care for our animals.  Our Saturday workdays involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water buckets and troughs, keeping pastures maintained, and performing regular animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, regular exams, giving shots, hoof trims, and more.

We have quite a number of elderly and special needs animals at our sanctuary, and are looking for someone who is specifically interested in and capable of assisting with their care several times a week on an ongoing basis.  Responsibilities include: 

- Giving oral medication as instructed

- Bandaging 

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

- Keeping detailed observation notes

Additional duties could include:

Join Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland's Crew Leader team, a dedicated group of skilled construction volunteers. Crew Leaders are the backbone of the construction department.  They work alongside Habitat's licensed Construction crew and work on new construction, rehabilitation of vacant homes, and repair work throughout our community.  Crew Leaders oversee small groups of unskilled volunteers, helping to ensure their safety and the successful completion of their assigned construction task.  Crew leaders need some construction skills, but can learn more skills from our constructions staff.  Being a Crew Leader is a fun way to use your current skills, learn new skills, give back to the community, and get to know other incredible volunteers!

Key Responsibilities: 

•     Oversee unskilled volunteers on Habitat construction sites, helping to ensure they are working safely and effectively.

•     Have a positive attitude, keeping the unskilled volunteers engaged and excited.

•     Assist Construction Managers on various construction tasks throughout the life of each project.

•     Complete safety training both virtually and hosted by HFHMM staff.

•     Provide feedback and input where needed to improve processes and volunteer engagement.

BECA is seeking Summer Camp Counselors for our annual Summer Camp, a summer bridge program for 1st – 6th-grade students from our partner schools, San Jeronimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School, in Honduras.

For interested volunteers who are not available during our summer camp weeks, we offer similar service learning volunteer opportunities for small groups - including student groups, families, and other organizations/companies.

The three-week summer camp (that happens annually - typically the last week of June through the first two weeks of July) includes fun games, activities, and literacy and math enrichment. The camp contributes to preventing summer learning loss and offers BECA's students an enriching opportunity during a time when many of their peers are still in school (public schools in Honduras operate on a February - November schedule). Our camp counselors and Counselors in Training learn just as much as our students do and have just as much fun too. 

Our counselors are a wonderfully varied group - including recent high school graduates, current college students on summer vacation, educators looking for service learning summer opportunities, and even retirees from all over the world. 

All Summer Camp Counselors (and other service learning volunteers) connect with the BECA team and each other via email and two onboarding video calls prior to coming to Honduras to discuss the following:

packing/arriving in-country

brainstorming the summer camp theme

lesson planning topics for reading & writing, arts & crafts, and physical education

We kick off with a 3-4 day orientation in-country (shorter for shorter experiences)

Summer Camp runs 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Monday through Friday

In the afternoons, the team is busy completing a service project, participating in a reflection series, going on home visits, or participating in team bonding activities

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Because the Summer Camp is a supplemental program, BECA recoups the program’s expenses through donations paid by Summer Camp Counselors and CITs. We ask that you contribute or fundraise $1,500 for the BECA program to help defray costs (staff support, food, accommodation, and training). A limited number of reduced contribution slots may be available. If you are interested in a service learning experience for your group, we are happy to discuss a fee structure that makes sense for all. We can also help groups/individuals set up a fundraising page using our networkforgood platform.

For current college students and educators, please note that volunteers in the past have successfully applied for on-campus grant monies or local grant opportunities to cover this expense and travel. We encourage you to explore what opportunities your college/community offers to subsidize summer experiences. Please contact us if you have any questions; we will try to help you in any way possible.

Volunteers are integral to restoring the Anacostia River. It is thanks to the work of the hundreds of thousands of Anacostia Watershed Society volunteers through the years that the river has improved. Our volunteers restore wetlands, plant native plants, collect seeds, and help with many other projects - often times pieces of larger plans that make a big impact on the river. All of our volunteer activities have an educational component and are an opportunity to learn about the watershed.

This spring, CSA Flag Football is gearing up for another exciting season, offering kids ages 5 to 14 a chance to develop their skills, learn teamwork, and have fun in a fast-paced, non-contact football environment. Our program is built on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and community, and we’re looking for current and former athletes to help make it a success.

If you’re a current or former athlete who enjoys working with kids, loves sports, or wants to gain leadership experience, this is the perfect opportunity. As a Junior Coach, you’ll play an important role in mentoring young athletes, assisting with practices, and supporting game-day operations—all while earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

Join us this season and help shape the future of Clarksburg football

In the middle of August we'll begin another great Coyotes Cross Country season for kids ages 5 to 14 (elementary and middle school kids).  Practice will be every Tuesday and Thursday at Rocky Hill Middle School from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, as well as Sunday afternoons at 2:00 -- somewhere fun -- if we don’t have a meet.  We’ll participate in 6 or 7 local league meets on Sunday afternoons beginning in the middle of September.  Our last regular season meet will likely be early November.  Many of our kids will participate in “post season” which will include a national championship meet in late November or early December.

High school students can earn SSL hours by assisting at practices and/or meets under a lead coach's supervision.  The Junior Coach commitment is super-flexible.  Attend practices/meets as often or as little as you'd like.  We offer a great environment for high school students to both gain coaching experience and serve younger children in the community.  Students will lead warm-up runs, facilitate running drills and stretches, assist with conversational pace runs, and time the kids doing speed workouts.  Are you fast?  You'll likely help with our 13 & 14 year-olds.  Not all that fast?  You'll help with the youngest kids.  Helping kids grow and achieve great things is a very rewarding experience.  Coyotes Cross Country is the 2024 AAU Maryland Team Champion -- both boys and girls.  And our 7&8 year-old boys are 2024 AAU National Champions.  Let's go!

The Button Farm seeks volunteers for a variety of activities. Opportunities include gardening, animal care, general site maintenance and support for open house events. On pre-scheduled Volunteer Days tasks are assigned day-of and upon your arrival. Activities are good for individuals, families, and small groups. Volunteer opportunities will be weather permitting. Volunteers will receive a notice of upcoming volunteer days via email.

The Button Farm Living History Center is set on 40-pristine acres inside Seneca Creek State Park, and is Maryland's only living history center depicting 19th century slave plantation life and the inspirational story of the Underground Railroad. Our site features a Civil War-era Barn, Historic Outbuildings, Livestock Pens, Museum Garden, and Slave Cemetery.
