Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Volunteers have an initial commitment period of one year and are requested to participate in at least one deployment per year. To help remove barriers to volunteering, approved travel expenses are paid or reimbursed by Humane World for Animals.

Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Fingerprinting and background check are required as you will be working closely with children.

Heart pillows are ideal for those who received surgical procedures near the underarm, and can act as a protective barrier between sensitive areas and the car seatbelt. Volunteers may choose to make sewn or crocheted heart-shaped pillows to show patients that we care!

NOTE: We do NOT accept no-sew pillows.

We welcome unisex colors and patterns (NO holiday or religious patterns, as noted in our project guidelines) and recommend a size of 9 x 9 inches, using cotton fabric for sewn pillows. Considering fostering but unsure about a long-term commitment? Our two-week foster program offers a rewarding opportunity to help a dog transition from shelter life to a forever home. By providing a temporary, loving environment, you help us assess the dog's personality and needs, making it easier to match them with the right adopter. This also frees up space in shelters, allowing us to assist more animals in need.

In terms of sizing, the mini crochet animals should be about the size of the palm of your hand, while the larger crochet animals may be the size of the hand itself. Due to the size limitations of our care kits, we will not be able to accept crochet animals larger than the size of an average adult hand. Thanks for your understanding and support!

In addition to the farmstead, the Park includes a 39-acre parcel on the western edge of the farm that was once home to a kinship-based African American community called Newmantown. The Farm Park has many visitors, and volunteers who have a love of history will assist staff in helping visitors connect to the history of the Farm Park through special events and programs.

This opportunity is for individuals who would assist the Farm Park with its special events and programs, as needed, held throughout the year including the Harvest Festival and Montgomery County's Heritage Days. Individuals would help with set-up and clean-up; and assist staff with various duties and tasks at special events and/or programs.

This is perfect for someone who doesn't want to volunteer on a regular basis, but can pitch in when needed!

Training will be provided. SSL approved.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers who LOVE CATS to go to various Petsmart locations and care for our cats that live there while waiting to be adopted!  Our cats are currently housed in 3 locations:  Largo Petsmart (10464 Campus Way S, Largo, MD 20774), Oxon Hill Petsmart (6005 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745) and Alexandria Petsmart (3351 Richmond Hwy Alexandria, VA 22305)

We are looking for volunteers to go once a week and help maintain the cleanliness of the cat's condos in the cat centers.  This includes scooping their litter box (or a full litter box change if needed), using the provided cleaners to sweep out and clean the condos to keep them sanitary, change out any dirty beds and toys with new fresh ones,  making sure that they have fresh water and clean bowls and general just tidying up.  It is really important that the cats are kept clean to prevent them getting sick. We also want volunteers to spend time playing with the cats and kittens so they get well socialized and handled routinely.  After your visit we ask for a visit report letting us know how the cat(s) are doing, any observations on their personality, and your interactions with them. Pictures/videos are great too! 

The available hours are 9 am - 9 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 10 am - 7 pm on Sundays for Petsmart Locations. There isn't an hour requirement for this volunteer opportunity: we encourage people to sign up on a recurring basis ideally once a week.

We Need Your Help! A Call for Creative, Recorded Video Content for our Clients

One wonderful way that volunteers can get involved in supporting our senior clients is by providing recorded video content to add to our video library. Many of our clients are aging in place and it helps stimulate them to utilize media platforms for entertainment, enrichment, and lifelong learning. One of our goals is to continue to expand our library of recorded content for our clients. Please review this entire document carefully for requirements and how the process works. I have included some tips and tutorials under the resources section. We appreciate your time and consideration of doing this!

Required Guidelines, Policies and Filming Suggestions-Please Review

Appropriate/Professional content: All videos must be appropriately and professionally created. Please make sure all visual content and spoken word content is done in good taste. Please make sure it is family friendly content.

 

Please make sure that the following is followed:

 

-Speak clearly, enunciate, and speak a bit slower than you normally do. Providing some pauses in between topics or portions of your presentation can help the viewer digest the information.

 

-Please do not share your last name or any additional personal information about yourself or anyone else during your videos. For example, if you are narrating or leading a video you could say, “Hi, my name is (your first name) and today I will show you around (name of location).”

 

-Please do not just speak to the camera. Options to enhance your video include showing the camera objects, sharing your screen to display text and visuals, showing the camera scenic views/displays, etc.

 

-Please make sure your sound levels are good and you have good lighting. Filming outdoors if audio levels are ok can help with the quality of the lighting.

 

-These videos are better if done generically, so that people can view them anytime. No need to mention the date you are filming, events that are upcoming, or any possible limiting factors like that. Keep things generic, broad and open-ended, and focus on the task at hand of entertaining and informing the viewer.

 

Quality Equipment/recording tips: All videos must be taken using quality equipment. Videos cannot be blurry. Some examples of devices you can use to capture content include your smartphone, a video camera, a tablet, or your computer. Please make sure the device you are using when filming has sufficient battery charge. Please make sure your fingers do not cover the camera lens when you are filming. One option is to place your recording device on a holder or flat surface so the camera is steady and not moving around as much.

 

 

Please record your video in full screen mode (no widescreen please). If using a smartphone to record your content, please make sure that you turn your phone sideways before starting your recording. Turning the phone sideways (the example I’m thinking of is with an iPhone) will make sure your video is recorded in full screen mode (and will not have widescreen bars on the sides of it).

 

Participants: If you are recording a video with more people in it than just you, please make sure others who are participating in the video are aware of what it will be used for, are ok with the purpose of this video being created, and follow the guidelines listed here.

 

 

Limiting Visual & Audio Distractions: If recording your video in a public setting (such as a park, a museum, etc.) please do your best to record the video in a quieter, less crowded space. In some situations, it may not be possible to have other people who are visiting this venue out of your shot. What we want is for you to find an area where your voice can still be heard clearly and where others who are visiting the same attraction do not take away from the main message and focus of your video. Please silence other devices like your phone during filming to limit any distractions. When filming your video and using your phone, please turn on airplay mode (or do not disturb) so that you won’t receive calls, texts, or other distracting notifications while filming. Please limit any possible distractions so you are focused and others who may be nearby don’t interrupt you from creating your great project.

 

Videos can be done in a variety of ways. If you prefer to create a visual picture slideshow that syncs up with the audio that you recorded, that works fine. The key is creating sensory stimulating content that has both pictures (moving or still) and words/music/etc.

 

Music usage and copywriting If you choose to use music in your video, please make sure it is your own original music. If you play music that is by a known artist, YouTube may not allow you to upload the content due to copywrite restrictions. You can sing or perform your own versions of music. If you use iMovie or other video editing programs, you can use the soundtracks available in the iMovie program, which are generic audio selections that could enhance your video.

Please note: we cannot guarantee that every video submission will be used.

 

Video Recording and Submission Process:

Make a plan for your video. Practice, as needed. When you are ready, record your video.

 

Review and edit your video. Film another take if needed. Make any changes or technical edits you need to make. Make sure the video flows nicely please. We aren’t expecting submissions to be Oscar worthy, but we do want these to be well thought out with care and consideration. One example of a program you can use for enhancing/editing if using an apple product is iMovie. There are several tutorials available online to help with the basics of editing on iMovie. Here is a good iMovie tutorial! There are also other simplistic movie editors on smartphones, and another on PC computers is called video editor. Again, you don’t have to be a professional to do this, these types of editing programs are pretty basic and easy to use.

 

Upload your video to YouTube (choose unlisted as your sharing option please. Unlisted means it will not post publicly online and only those who you share the link with directly will be able to view it). Submit your video link and your signed media release form to the Volunteer Coordinator by emailing Gabe at gpinkney@jssa.org

Click on “subtitles” on the left side of your screen and find the video you have uploaded. Underneath the languages column click on downward arrow, click on that and click on the language you want the subtitles to be in Click on “duplicate and edit” on the right side You will see the subtitles that YouTube generated from your video on the left side. Take a few minutes to proofread the subtitles to make sure they were written correctly and that there aren’t any spelling errors. Please correct the spelling errors as best you can. Please feel free to add some punctuation too because no punctuation is automatically generated. Start your video and make sure that the written captions match the exact areas when you are speaking. Once done with your editing, click the blue link at the top of the page that says “assign timings” You can do some more edits if you would like, but YouTube auto captioning does a very nice job overall of doing captions accurately. When done editing, click on blue “publish” button

Video Categories, Topics and Ideas:

Here are some options for types of videos you can create.

PET TALKS: Kids can create and share short documentaries about their pets. Education is provided as information about the animal (breed, diet, exercise). For seniors this would engage their memory process to think about pets they had growing up (or have now), while providing educational and soothing material. (please make sure video is approximately 5 minutes long).

WALKING TOURS: Could be done by people of all ages, including high school and college students. Create walking tours featuring a town, local history, an art gallery, museum, and/or some type of attraction. Information about the history of the location or unique insight about what is being shown is key. If at a museum, selections from the display placards could be read. Unique insight, relevant stories and other anecdotes are encouraged. This will allow homebound seniors to explore and/or revisit their local town or learn about a new destination. Videos could be local, national, or international destinations. (Approximately 15 minutes long).

MUSIC PERFORMANCES: Volunteers could create recorded videos of them performing music. It could be performances with musical instruments, singing, or both! Performance experience required please. Experienced performers preferred. Solo, small group, or ensemble performances welcome. Please be mindful of the acoustics of the setting you are in and test out the volume of your sound to ensure that it is at an appropriate level. (5 minutes-30 minutes).

LECTURES/PRESENTATIONS:

Option to create a recorded lecture for a class project/teaching opportunity/subject that you have knowledge or expertise in. Slides, pictures, clips, etc. are strongly encouraged to be utilized by the presenter. (10-45 minutes long).

Some options within this category could include:

-Visual art demonstration

-Show off your collection! Explain when you started collecting and some of your favorites!

-Cooking demonstration (please include a disclaimer at the beginning of your video. Example disclaimer: “this video is for educational purposes. Please only try cooking if you have appropriate safety measures in place and assistance from another person.”

-Magic show (card tricks, juggling, etc.). Option to show how trick is done too!

-History lesson

-Guided meditation or sound meditation

-Short story reading (please display text on the screen also while reading, if possible. Short stories are often available to view online. You could share your screen, enlarge the text, and record that way if possible). The presenter is welcome and encouraged to share their brief analysis of the story after they read it.

-Theater performance

-Talent show

-Narrated slideshow about a trip you went on

-Gardening

-Dance performance

-Poetry

-Trivia or mind challenge (example: Ask a trivia question, wait 15 seconds, then give the answer, repeat)

-Language lesson (with text visuals on screen). Even English language lessons are helpful as some of our clients have a desire to practice or improve their English.

-Basic technology training steps (simplified, focusing on one device, visuals and text incorporated)

Video Categories, Topics and Ideas:

Here are some options for types of videos you can create.

PET TALKS: Kids can create and share short documentaries about their pets. Education is provided as information about the animal (breed, diet, exercise). For seniors this would engage their memory process to think about pets they had growing up (or have now), while providing educational and soothing material. (please make sure video is approximately 5 minutes long).

WALKING TOURS: Could be done by people of all ages, including high school and college students. Create walking tours featuring a town, local history, an art gallery, museum, and/or some type of attraction. Information about the history of the location or unique insight about what is being shown is key. If at a museum, selections from the display placards could be read. Unique insight, relevant stories and other anecdotes are encouraged. This will allow homebound seniors to explore and/or revisit their local town or learn about a new destination. Videos could be local, national, or international destinations. (Approximately 15 minutes long).

MUSIC PERFORMANCES: Volunteers could create recorded videos of them performing music. It could be performances with musical instruments, singing, or both! Performance experience required please. Experienced performers preferred. Solo, small group, or ensemble performances welcome. Please be mindful of the acoustics of the setting you are in and test out the volume of your sound to ensure that it is at an appropriate level. (5 minutes-30 minutes).

LECTURES/PRESENTATIONS:

Option to create a recorded lecture for a class project/teaching opportunity/subject that you have knowledge or expertise in. Slides, pictures, clips, etc. are strongly encouraged to be utilized by the presenter. (10-45 minutes long).

RefAmerica UPDATE for Summer 2020 (virtual) and 2021 (in-person):   Hope you all are healthy and staying safe.  Yes, RefAmerica is still looking for local American high school students who want to help promote a warm American welcome for refugees in the United States.  As we will be unable to bring resettled refugee teens to Washington D.C. this summer for the RefAmerica leadership program, we plan to have a certain number of virtual sessions with a RefAmerica group of teen refugees and volunteers in July 2020 to allow participants to begin their cross-cultural experience, to begin to bond, to begin to develop story-telling and public speaking skills, and to receive some mentoring in anticipation of their in-person program in Washington next summer (2021).  If you are a graduating senior, rising senior, or a rising junior, your virtual participation in this program in July 2020 could help lessen the feelings of isolation and frustration experienced by relatively recently arrived refugee teens as they attempt to operate and adapt in a new language and a foreign country during a pandemic lockdown and its aftermath.  Support and insights from American peers will be invaluable to them as they try to get know their new home country and its inhabitants under very trying conditions, and volunteers will gain much from refugee insights as well.

We are accepting applications through mid-June and will interview RefAmerica applicants (by phone).  (If you are interested in helping welcome refugee peers, we would suggest that this is an ideal time to focus on the RefAmerica application when you are necessarily at home and practicing social distancing.)  Those accepted into the program can rest assured that so long as they qualify this year, they will have the opportunity to participate with their refugee contemporaries in the in-person program in Washington next year (health conditions permitting), and we will look to our volunteer teen participants this July to provide much-needed moral support to these refugee peers by participating in a few virtual sessions.

RefAmerica is a program in leadership, public-speaking, cross-cultural understanding, and the narrative method.  Participants have the opportunity to get to know Washington DC; to learn more about American immigrant stories; to engage in a unique cross-cultural program of sharing traditions, team-building experiences and personal stories; to explore their own roles within a greater American story of immigration and integration; to meet with government and legislative officials, refugee program professionals, and others; and to plan ways to welcome refugees and promote cross-cultural understanding in their home communities.  The goal of RefAmerica is to promote full inclusion of recently arrived refugees in America and provide small groups of participant refugees with the tools both to tell their stories and to help forge for themselves, their families and their fellow refugees, like generations of Americans before them, a new American story.  Volunteer participants in the  July 2021 in-person program are eligible for SSL.

Volunteer: Foster Program

As a foster parent, you may give a mother cat and her kittens a place to live until the kittens are old enough for the entire family to return to the shelter for adoption. You may be able to take a litter of kittens (or puppies) that have no mother for up to 8 weeks. You could care for a cat with an upper respiratory Kittens infection until he feels better, or help rehabilitate a dog with a broken leg that is healing. You might take home a rabbit to make room for new arrivals in our small-mammals area. We have lots of animals that need your care, especially older cats who truly benefit from spending time away from the shelter before they find their forever homes. Supplies and care. We furnish all the supplies you need, including food, litter, bedding, toys and enrichment items, and medical care. Foster parents are responsible for traveling to and from the shelter for medical care and foster care appointments. The frequency of appointments varies depending on the reason an animal is being fostered.

Time Commitment: Fostering may last anywhere from two weeks to several months, depending on the pet’s needs. If you are interested in fostering with MCASAC, please follow these steps:

Submit an application on our website Attend an orientation. You will learn about policies and procedures for the program. Orientations will be held on a quarterly basis. Fill out background check form. Forms will be submitted for review and returned in a couple of weeks. To be admitted to the program you must pass the background check. Attend foster training. You will learn about program expectations, basic medical information, and have all your questions answered. Start saving lives. MCASAC will match you with the foster animals that suit your lifestyle.

*Criteria: Be of age. The primary caregiver of the foster animal must be at least 18 years old. Be in the area. Foster volunteers must be able to get to our shelter in Derwood Maryland on a regular basis. Please consider the potential commute before applying to foster. Please note that MCASAC cannot accommodate those seeking to fulfill court-ordered community service.
