What is Carousel Day?

This is a festival in celebration of Glen Echo Park's 105-year-old Dentzel Carousel as it opens for the season! In addition to riding the carousel, families are welcome to enjoy many other FREE activities throughout the Park including performances, a spring parade and maypole celebration, hands-on arts & crafts, short film screenings, open artist studios & galleries, and lots more! Volunteer: Help Teach Integrated Science Workshops for Kids

Science is Elemental runs integrated science workshops. We want kids to have fun doing what they love to do such as art. music and sports, while learning some science. SIE's goal is to reach those kids that don't yet know that they like science. While we are thrilled to have high school students helping out, and welcome their participation, many of our workshops occur during the school day, when they are not available. SIE is seeking professionals with some time during the day. Retirees or near-retirees would be fantastic, particularly those with a science or engineering background. The workshops can occur anywhere in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Volunteer: 2025-2026 SSL Projects sponsored by The Tacy Foundation

Description

2025-2026 ongoing SSL Opportunities for youth sponsored by The Tacy Foundation

Here is a list of many different In-Person and remote opportunities that you are invited to choose this school year:

Find, learn, and play all styles of music that have great meaning for the seniors (songs from 1940’s to 1990’s). Bring them to senior facilities and to hospitals during the Winter season, including Holidays in December-May. Use the time you would ordinarily spend practicing your regular songs to learn at least one or two of seniors’ favorite songs. You will be really surprised by the appreciation from seniors and hospital visitors. They will smile and hum the tunes when they hear their favorite music from bygone years. Add winter and holiday repertoire to your list of music: music of their youth will be so very uplifting to them.   You will be (1) performing these songs in-person, (2) and/or making a video of the songs you have learned (public domain only for videos) to place on the Playlist for hospitals.  Send to: recording.thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.    MCPS requires that students earn SSL hours for the time spent performing (or recording), not for the time spent practicing or rehearsing. Design Seasonal Cards for hospital patients and seniors. Make these generic to be received by any of the recipients above.  Due date TBD. When we ship QR code Cards, we will place your message and card in the box for the hospitals where we play live music: Holy Cross Silver Spring, Holy Cross Germantown, Walter Reed NMMC Fisher Houses, National Institutes of Health, Suburban Hospital (Hopkins), Sibley Memorial Hospital (Hopkins). Frederick Health, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, and Howard General Hospital (Hopkins). You will need paper and paint/crayons/colored pencils for this. Whatever art supplies you have will be fine. Make these cards generic without reference to religious belief. Hospitals request this. (1 SSL hour for 15 cards). Write to: cards.thetacyfoundation@gmail.com for information and answer to your questions.
Please do not include any personal information (full name, home address, phone number, email address, etc.Make and send your music video of music (nonreligious) on YouTube. We will offer your music to the Activity Directors (of seniors facilities) as Virtual Live Performance. You are allowed to speak clearly your message to seniors: “Thank you for all that you have done for the community. I would like to play this song for you now.....”  Send to recording.thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.  The length of the video should be 15-20 minutes of music at least.  1 SSL hour per completed, accepted, and uploaded Video. Write (and or) illustrate a particular memorable moment when you played music at a hospital. Perhaps someone came up to you and thanked you. Maybe a family had just heard a very sad prognosis, or a family was happily bringing home a newborn baby, a family was bringing home a loved one from a hospital stay. As they always do, they stopped to hear your music. Another time, perhaps you saw people enter the lobby through the big doors and turn toward the music and sigh a deep breath of hope and courage. Write a descriptive piece on this. Holidays and birthdays are very mixed. They are markers of family traditions with joys and sorrows. Your writing may bring peace of mind to someone in a senior facility or a hospital who cannot express the sadness or the despair or the joy of a surprise visit of a loved one. Stories are the best medicine for reminding us of the inestimable value of paying forward our hope for others through music. (1 SSL hour). Send to volunteer.thetacyfoundation@gmail.com and/or thetacyfoundation@gmail.com. Please do not include any personal information (full name, home address, phone number, email address, etc.)

5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. The piece may be about how you discovered a side of yourself you had not known before these music classes. Relate how you would like to take what you learned into the world to share with others and to serve again. (1 SSL hour after it is published online or in the Newsletter). Send to volunteer.thetacyfoundation@gmail.comand/or thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.

Volunteer: Life Stories - A Project for Honoring Seniors

Life Stories - A Project for Honoring Seniors

The Tacy Foundation proposes to encourage selected student volunteers to interview and write the stories of the incredible seniors who have built and maintained the communities where we are now privileged to live. We hope to discover and share seniors’ stories of personal, family, and work lives in the past decades. They are the heroes who, despite huge life challenges, have raised families, created charitable organizations, served their neighborhoods with vigilance for all families, and contributed with integrity through their professions and community service.

Capturing the stories of seniors has sparked the interest of a number of young musicians. The teens' stellar efforts to bring hope and memory to seniors with their music and conversations through the past 12 years have inspired us all.  Youth have learned that these precious people are most interesting, well-educated, appreciative of youth, and devoted parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

To receive SSL hours, the student must be directly supervised by a Tacy Foundation adult volunteer or an assisted living staff member while interviewing the seniors. The interviews must be held in a public space, that is, a common area of the assisted living facility.  This requirement is designed for the student's safety. The student can draft the actual article at home.  He or she will then submit the article to the Tacy Foundation Director for review. When an article is ready, it will be published in the Foundation’s monthly newsletter.  It will also be offered to the senior facility’s newsletter for their residents and staff.

SSL Credit is based on the hours for the interview and equivalent time writing the life story of the senior.  SSL credit will be determined as follows:

SSL Hours will be based on the length of the actual interview, some longer and some shorter than others.  Students will earn hour-for-hour the time spent conducting the interview.

SSL Hours of transcribing the interview will vary, depending on the length of the interview.

1 Hour of SSL Credit for transcribing 1 hour of interview.  2 hours of transcription for 2 hours of interview, and so on.

Any photos require pre-approval by the family and senior facilities.

Kindly contact the Teen Chief Intern of this project:  lifestories.tacyfoundation@gmail.com

The Teen leader (Chief Intern) will respond as promptly as he is able.

We Need Your Help! A Call for Creative, Recorded Video Content for our Clients

One wonderful way that volunteers can get involved in supporting our senior clients is by providing recorded video content to add to our video library. Many of our clients are aging in place and it helps stimulate them to utilize media platforms for entertainment, enrichment, and lifelong learning. One of our goals is to continue to expand our library of recorded content for our clients. Please review this entire document carefully for requirements and how the process works. I have included some tips and tutorials under the resources section. We appreciate your time and consideration of doing this!

Required Guidelines, Policies and Filming Suggestions-Please Review

Appropriate/Professional content: All videos must be appropriately and professionally created. Please make sure all visual content and spoken word content is done in good taste. Please make sure it is family friendly content.

Please make sure that the following is followed:

-Speak clearly, enunciate, and speak a bit slower than you normally do. Providing some pauses in between topics or portions of your presentation can help the viewer digest the information.

-Please do not share your last name or any additional personal information about yourself or anyone else during your videos. For example, if you are narrating or leading a video you could say, “Hi, my name is (your first name) and today I will show you around (name of location).”

-Please do not just speak to the camera. Options to enhance your video include showing the camera objects, sharing your screen to display text and visuals, showing the camera scenic views/displays, etc.

-Please make sure your sound levels are good and you have good lighting. Filming outdoors if audio levels are ok can help with the quality of the lighting.

-These videos are better if done generically, so that people can view them anytime. No need to mention the date you are filming, events that are upcoming, or any possible limiting factors like that. Keep things generic, broad and open-ended, and focus on the task at hand of entertaining and informing the viewer.

Quality Equipment/recording tips: All videos must be taken using quality equipment. Videos cannot be blurry. Some examples of devices you can use to capture content include your smartphone, a video camera, a tablet, or your computer. Please make sure the device you are using when filming has sufficient battery charge. Please make sure your fingers do not cover the camera lens when you are filming. One option is to place your recording device on a holder or flat surface so the camera is steady and not moving around as much.

Please record your video in full screen mode (no widescreen please). If using a smartphone to record your content, please make sure that you turn your phone sideways before starting your recording. Turning the phone sideways (the example I’m thinking of is with an iPhone) will make sure your video is recorded in full screen mode (and will not have widescreen bars on the sides of it).

Participants: If you are recording a video with more people in it than just you, please make sure others who are participating in the video are aware of what it will be used for, are ok with the purpose of this video being created, and follow the guidelines listed here.

Limiting Visual & Audio Distractions: If recording your video in a public setting (such as a park, a museum, etc.) please do your best to record the video in a quieter, less crowded space. In some situations, it may not be possible to have other people who are visiting this venue out of your shot. What we want is for you to find an area where your voice can still be heard clearly and where others who are visiting the same attraction do not take away from the main message and focus of your video. Please silence other devices like your phone during filming to limit any distractions. When filming your video and using your phone, please turn on airplay mode (or do not disturb) so that you won’t receive calls, texts, or other distracting notifications while filming. Please limit any possible distractions so you are focused and others who may be nearby don’t interrupt you from creating your great project.

Videos can be done in a variety of ways. If you prefer to create a visual picture slideshow that syncs up with the audio that you recorded, that works fine. The key is creating sensory stimulating content that has both pictures (moving or still) and words/music/etc.

Music usage and copywriting If you choose to use music in your video, please make sure it is your own original music. If you play music that is by a known artist, YouTube may not allow you to upload the content due to copywrite restrictions. You can sing or perform your own versions of music. If you use iMovie or other video editing programs, you can use the soundtracks available in the iMovie program, which are generic audio selections that could enhance your video.

Please note: we cannot guarantee that every video submission will be used.

Video Recording and Submission Process:

Make a plan for your video. Practice, as needed. When you are ready, record your video.

Review and edit your video. Film another take if needed. Make any changes or technical edits you need to make. Make sure the video flows nicely please. We aren’t expecting submissions to be Oscar worthy, but we do want these to be well thought out with care and consideration. One example of a program you can use for enhancing/editing if using an apple product is iMovie. There are several tutorials available online to help with the basics of editing on iMovie. Here is a good iMovie tutorial! There are also other simplistic movie editors on smartphones, and another on PC computers is called video editor. Again, you don’t have to be a professional to do this, these types of editing programs are pretty basic and easy to use.

Upload your video to YouTube (choose unlisted as your sharing option please. Unlisted means it will not post publicly online and only those who you share the link with directly will be able to view it). Submit your video link and your signed media release form to the Volunteer Coordinator by emailing Gabe at gpinkney@jssa.org

How to add automatic subtitles and closed captions to your YouTube Video

More on adding subtitles and captions to your YouTube video

Adding closed captioning into your YouTube Video

Click on “subtitles” on the left side of your screen and find the video you have uploaded. Underneath the languages column click on downward arrow, click on that and click on the language you want the subtitles to be in Click on “duplicate and edit” on the right side You will see the subtitles that YouTube generated from your video on the left side. Take a few minutes to proofread the subtitles to make sure they were written correctly and that there aren’t any spelling errors. Please correct the spelling errors as best you can. Please feel free to add some punctuation too because no punctuation is automatically generated. Start your video and make sure that the written captions match the exact areas when you are speaking. Once done with your editing, click the blue link at the top of the page that says “assign timings” You can do some more edits if you would like, but YouTube auto captioning does a very nice job overall of doing captions accurately. When done editing, click on blue “publish” button

Video Categories, Topics and Ideas:

Here are some options for types of videos you can create.

PET TALKS: Kids can create and share short documentaries about their pets. Education is provided as information about the animal (breed, diet, exercise). For seniors this would engage their memory process to think about pets they had growing up (or have now), while providing educational and soothing material. (please make sure video is approximately 5 minutes long).

WALKING TOURS: Could be done by people of all ages, including high school and college students. Create walking tours featuring a town, local history, an art gallery, museum, and/or some type of attraction. Information about the history of the location or unique insight about what is being shown is key. If at a museum, selections from the display placards could be read. Unique insight, relevant stories and other anecdotes are encouraged. This will allow homebound seniors to explore and/or revisit their local town or learn about a new destination. Videos could be local, national, or international destinations. (Approximately 15 minutes long).

MUSIC PERFORMANCES: Volunteers could create recorded videos of them performing music. It could be performances with musical instruments, singing, or both! Performance experience required please. Experienced performers preferred. Solo, small group, or ensemble performances welcome. Please be mindful of the acoustics of the setting you are in and test out the volume of your sound to ensure that it is at an appropriate level. (5 minutes-30 minutes).

LECTURES/PRESENTATIONS:

Option to create a recorded lecture for a class project/teaching opportunity/subject that you have knowledge or expertise in. Slides, pictures, clips, etc. are strongly encouraged to be utilized by the presenter. (10-45 minutes long).

Some options within this category could include:

-Visual art demonstration

-Show off your collection! Explain when you started collecting and some of your favorites!

-Cooking demonstration (please include a disclaimer at the beginning of your video. Example disclaimer: “this video is for educational purposes. Please only try cooking if you have appropriate safety measures in place and assistance from another person.”

-Magic show (card tricks, juggling, etc.). Option to show how trick is done too!

-History lesson

-Guided meditation or sound meditation

-Short story reading (please display text on the screen also while reading, if possible. Short stories are often available to view online. You could share your screen, enlarge the text, and record that way if possible). The presenter is welcome and encouraged to share their brief analysis of the story after they read it.

-Theater performance

-Talent show

-Narrated slideshow about a trip you went on

-Gardening

-Dance performance

-Poetry

-Trivia or mind challenge (example: Ask a trivia question, wait 15 seconds, then give the answer, repeat)

-Language lesson (with text visuals on screen). Even English language lessons are helpful as some of our clients have a desire to practice or improve their English.

-Basic technology training steps (simplified, focusing on one device, visuals and text incorporated)

Thank you again for your time and creativity! Your participation means you are making a difference for our clients! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Volunteer: Piano Pals for Seniors

Piano Pals® for Seniors-   Private mentoring for a senior living in an assisted living facility.

The High School student schedules a piano lesson on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with an interested senior.  The lessons begin anywhere from the beginner level to the level where the senior is.  If a beginner, the teen uses Piano for Adult Beginners provided by Faber Piano Adventures.   If the senior student has played, the teen brings materials that are meaningful to the senior.

Piano lessons are great platforms for seniors to connect with a youth.  Present and past are conjoined through the music that is studied and the conversation that inevitably unfolds.  A relationship is forged through the attention of a teen who is knowledgeable in music and eager to learn from the senior about history, family, culture, and the aging brain. The senior has time.

These sessions will be under supervision of an adult volunteer on the premises.  Scheduled by the Activity Director of the assisted living facility.

1 hour ssl credit for mentors per class.   SSL Hours are logged and approved by the Assisted Living staff at the facility if you are under the staff's supervision there.  If Tacy Foundation staff are present at all times and only when TF staff are onsite, you may log your hours with the foundation.

Volunteer: Music and Stories to Cheer Seniors and Hospital Patients.

Please find below a list of virtual/remote opportunities for volunteers to continue reminding Seniors that we are grateful for them. Hospital patients and staff will be heartened by your music and stories.  These activities are designed to be completed in the safety of your home during Quarantine for the time being (ending when MCPS and all MD/VA schools return to normal status). If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the following steps:

View the orientation video at our website: https://www.tacyfoundation.org/pages/about-us  Complete (guardians only) and submit the waiver/release form attached to this opportunity or available on our website: https://www.tacyfoundation.org/pages/about-us Attend one Orientation via telephone Conference Call. Select one or more of the projects below to complete. When an assignment is completed, send as an attachment in an email message to the Teen Intern, to the email address indicated on the attachment given to you for Orientation, and to Charlotte Holliday, at thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.

Here is a list of many different virtual/remote opportunities that you can complete until schools return to normal status:

1.  Find music that has great meaning for the seniors (songs from 1940’s to 1990’s).  Use the time you would ordinarily spend practicing for an event to learn at least one or two songs. You will be ready to share these favorite songs when the doors open again. During this Fall season, add Fall and Winter repertoire to your list of music to bring after Quarantine. (1 SSL hour)

2.  Draw a picture depicting the Summer season for the seniors.  Include a crossword puzzle for them to keep their minds sharp. Write a rhyme and picture.  Reflect on their importance to your life by their great contributions through history (from 1940’s to the present).  Send these to the Teen Communications Intern for the Foundation. There have been many adventures from your generous, heroic efforts, and they are so beautiful to read.  Sharing your thoughts with other volunteers will embolden them to overcome their fear and hesitancy.  Sharing them with adults and seniors reminds the seniors that they are important.  It is their privilege to pass down to YOU the great work ethic, sense of purpose, and experiences in grappling with emergencies that they have learned during their lifetime.  During this silence from seeing them, we will ask the Communications Intern to receive these writings and place them on Facebook. Most seniors have access to Facebook.  They can see their young music friends’ messages of concern and of thanks for their lives.  We will also mail your messages to them either via email or USPS. (.5 SSL hour)

3.  Make and send your music video of music in public domain on YouTube performances. We will offer your music to the Activity Directors (of seniors facilities) as Virtual Live Performance.  You are allowed to speak clearly your message to seniors:  “I miss seeing you, so I would like to play this song for you now…..”. (1 SSL hour)

4. Write a thoughtful, encouraging email message to a senior.   Let the senior know how he or she has reminded you of courage and strength during hard times.

You may refer to the Beethoven story written and illustrated below by Faber Piano Adventures.  (See web site below on this email message.)

https://beethoven.pianoadventures.com/?mc_cid=fe4353e2fc&mc_eid=4e5fc455a7

Tell him or her that you are studying about another hero (besides the senior) who has helped you.  In other words, share with seniors in an email message to them to encourage them to be strong and to have hope.

Send your letter to the Program Manager: programs.thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.  She will send your letter or story to the seniors in all of the places where we play music.  They will see our video playlist too and will look forward to the time when COVID is over and we will return to them.

1.5 SSL per email letter.  5 full paragraphs of expressive, encouraging connection between the struggles of Beethoven’s life challenges and your experience so far in the pandemic of 2020.

5.  Write (and or) illustrate a particular memorable moment when you played music at a hospital.  Perhaps someone came up to you and thanked you.  Maybe a family had just heard a very sad prognosis, or a family was happily bringing home a newborn baby, or another family was bringing home a loved one from a hospital stay.  As they always do, they stopped to hear your music.  Another time, perhaps you saw people enter the lobby through the big doors and turn toward the music and sigh a deep breath of hope and courage.  Write a descriptive piece on this.  Your writing may bring peace of mind to someone in a senior facility or a hospital who cannot express the sadness or the despair.  Stories are the best medicine for reminding us of the inestimable value of paying forward our hope for others through music. (1 SSL hour)

6Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® experiences. Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson you gained in this setting.  Tell about how your Title 1 student saw the world through his or her eyes. (1 SSL hour)

7.  Assemble USBs for shipments to NYC's First Responders as well as hospital patients.  Place USB into plastic pouches with inserts as a donation (1 SSL hour per 100 USBs)

8Design GET WELL cards for patients.  When we ship USBs, we will place your card in the box to the hospital. You will need paper and paint/crayons/color pencils for this. Whatever art supplies you have are fine. Make these generic without reference of religious belief.  Hospitals request this.  (1 SSL hour for 15 cards)

Design CHEERFUL THANK YOU cards for hospitals, First Responders, and the military families that will receive Tacy  Foundation USBs  at Fisher Houses, and First Responders. (1 SSL hour for 15 cards)

9.  The Reading Express Virtual Library:  Make a video recording of a children's book, a fairy tale, or Your Own Storybook of holidays in your family.  Show the pictures on the camera as you read the book.  No matter how difficult life becomes and how trapped a child feels, he or she can go anywhere in the universe with a book or story.  Reading to a child can take him anywhere, bring her hope and joy in any life situation. BE SURE THE STORY IS IN PUBLIC DOMAIN or contact the publisher directly first to receive written permission to make a video of the story.  (1 hour SSL)

11.  Virtual Live Music via YouTube Video Concerts (in Virginia & Maryland) of  Music.  Prepare songs to play live on YouTube.  Chief Interns will place on a private playlist.  45-minute programs are to be sent to Seniors Facilities that request video to be viewed at any time that is convenient for each facility.  Look for Signup.com opportunities.  Prepare any classical and or public domain songs to cheer each listener!  1.5 hour SSL Credit.

Student participation in the above service projects is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. The above service activities are designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until schools resume normal status.
