Help us with the ongoing fall harvest, this time in Hagerstown, MD at 10:00 am on Saturday 24 September. The work will involve plucking nut-containing burrs from trees by hand, with long-handled tools, and from ladders for those comfortable climbing. Volunteers will track which chestnuts come from designated trees, some of which were pollinated by hand this summer to mix the most promising gene lines. The nuts will be planted next spring to produce the next generation of trees, hopefully incrementally more resistant to chestnut blight, as part of the American Chestnut Foundation's larger program to restore a native tree to our region's environment.
Bring leather gloves to shield against prickly burrs. You might also want to bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and a snack.
