Date: Wednesday, June 5, 2019
Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Confluence meadow near Old Port of Bladensburg

Description: Help restore a native meadow at the confluence of the Northwest and Northeast branches of the Anacostia River while harvesting mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), an herb with a long tradition of use by herbalists and acupuncture practitioners. June 5 is the traditional date for mugwort harvest. Volunteers will also help prepare areas of the meadow for the sowing of native seeds in the fall as part of a larger effort to restore habitat for pollinators and other animals that depend on meadows. AWS will provide all necessary tools and training for this event.

Meeting Location: Old Port of Bladensburg, located at 4418 Baltimore Avenue, Bladensburg, MD 20710. We'll meet in the parking lot. (Map)

  • The Old Port of Bladensburg (sometimes referred to as Old Bladensburg Port by GPS) can be accessed by car or bus (Metrobus: F8, about a 0.2 mile walk). There is some parking available, but we recommend carpooling to the event. If the GPS leads you to an Auto Parts or Scanlan Fleet Service, keep driving straight until you can take the first left on Tanglewood Drive. Once you take a left you will have to turn left again onto Baltimore Avenue, which is a one way road. Follow this road and look for a sign on the right labeled Old Port of Bladensburg. That is where you will find parking and where we will meet.

Physical Requirements: This event will likely involve some digging, lifting, bending, and walking on uneven ground. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes for the duration of the event. Field conditions may be wet or dry, hot or cool, sunny or cloudy. The event is not suitable for small children or those with health issues. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

Registration is required and helpful! - This lets us know how many people to expect so we can plan the day's activities. Prior to the event, registrants will receive additional information regarding proper clothing, weather conditions, etc. Please register here at this link: https://anacostiaws.salsalabs.org/6519meadowmugwortworkday/index.html?page=register

If you have any questions prior to the event, please contact Robinne Gray at rgray@anacostiaws.org or 301-699-6204 ext. 116.

All field events are weather dependent. We will go out in light rain, but may cancel if there is heavy rain, lightning, or strong wind forecasted.
