The Button Farm Living History Center interprets plantation life in Maryland the heroic story of the Underground Railroad. Patrons are encouraged to explore our 40-acre farm and the surrounding 6,000-acre State Park, where you can expect to see wildlife, historical landscapes and have a wonderful, self-guided outdoor experience.

Event Description

This year marks the 23rd annual Heritage Days weekend (Saturday, June  25 and Sunday, June 26 from Noon until 4 each day) – a countywide festival offering programs, activities, and tours appealing to visitors of all ages and interests. With over 30 free events all around Montgomery County, Heritage Days Weekend, is the perfect time to explore local history, culture, and nature. Access to Button Farm will include:

  • Onsite Parking
  • Self-guided tours of our living history center, including Museum Garden, Animal Pens and displays.
  • Miles of hiking and mountain bike trails just off of our front drive.
  • Picnic tables, benches and shaded areas to sit down or enjoy a picnic at (patrons must bring their own food and non-alcoholic drink and take trash with them).
  • Beautiful landscapes and vista for photography, drawing, painting and bird-watching.

How Volunteers Can Help:

We are asking volunteers to help with set-up and break-down as well as general operations.  Volunteer hours will be from 11am to 4:30pm.

Volunteer tasks will include:

  • Help with set-up and break-down of event
  • Direct cars to parking spaces
  • Help out as needed (i.e., provide directions, ensure signs are up, etc.)

Volunteers must be 16 and older to work solo, 14 and older if accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should wear comfortable outdoor clothing including closed-toe shoes. Volunteer must bring their own water, lunch, snacks.

Click on "Respond" on the specific shifts to sign up. Expect an email reply to confirm your participation and provide additional information. If you would like to work the full day, please sign-up for both shifts for that day.

Notice:

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
