Description

Love history and the C&O Canal? Are you over 18 and interested in joining a team of dedicated volunteers to provide light support of an 1830s-era lockhouse and the guests who visit it? Then this may be the opportunity for you!

The C&O Canal Trust is seeking volunteer Quartermasters for our award-winning overnight interpretive program (www.canalquarters.org), in which park visitors (yes - even you!) can spend a few nights in an authentic lockkeeper's home and experience a bit of canal history for themselves.

Each house is supported by a team of volunteer Quartermasters who perform regular upkeep and light maintenance duties between guest stays, such as restocking cleaning supplies or lantern batteries, and generally keeping the house and its yard and firepit looking tidy.  In addition, Quartermasters rotate remaining on call for guests with urgent issues such as a lockout or needing basic supplies.

The ideal Quartermaster will possess some basic home care or light maintenance skills, lives relatively close by, and is friendly and generous with both the lockhouse guests and their fellow Quartermasters. They'll value the historic nature of working in a 200-year-old lockhouse in a national park and delight in sharing this unique resource with others.
