Pleasant View Historic Site - Conservation Landscaping

Calendar Until May 17, 2020

Description

Join with us to create native plant landscaping on the historic African American site at 11810 Darnestown Road. A grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust through the Montgomery County Water Quality Fund will pay for 500+ native trees, shrubs and other plants. You and other community volunteers will install these plants to create beautiful habitat that will also improve water quality for the nearby Muddy Branch. Please visit our website at www.eartheast.org or our Facebook page at Earth Stewardship East to see volunteer dates. We have events specifically for students seeking SSL hours but also dates open to anyone aged 8+ (with parents). On many of our volunteer work dates the historic Q.O. Colored School will be open and former students available to answer questions about the history of this site. Our project will culminate in the summer of 2018 with a celebration of the 150th anniversary of freed slaves purchasing this site for establishing a church and school for their community. Please bring a shovel and work gloves if possible. You do not have to have gardening experience but should dress and be prepared to dig in the soil. Children must be at least 8 years old and have a parent present. Besides volunteers for planting we can use volunteers to photograph, videotape and publicize our events.
