Academy Child Development Center, Inc. is in need of Homework Helpers in our after school program. Homework Helpers assist elementary school students with understanding their homework assignments, developing study skills and learning approaches for solving math problems. Volunteers are asked to assist students for two hours per week throughout the school year. We have five convenient locations throughout Montgomery County. All of Academy's Before & After School-Age programs are located on the campuses of the following MCPS Elementary Schools: Charles Drew, Cold Spring, DuFief, Galway and Stone Mill. We are looking for High School students with a desire to support the education of elementary school students. Qualifications & Skills: Interpersonal communication skills, especially listening skills and a sense of humor. Honor Roll preferred. ~ Patience, flexibility, creativity and a willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students. Strong English language and math skills. Ability to work as part of a team with other Homework Helpers and Academy staff. Academy requires each student (ages 15-18) to complete and submit a Volunteer Questionnaire themselves. Once contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator, they will need to have their parent/guardian complete a Volunteer Permission Form. Additionally, volunteers must be interviewed by our Volunteer Coordinator or Center Director, attend volunteer orientation, submit all required health/emergency forms required by the MSDE Office of Child Care. Student volunteers ages 16-18 will be required to have a fingerprint background check prior to starting, as outlined in Academy's Family Handbook.
