Small Things Matter believes in the importance that reading plays in a child's development and future success. Our literacy program provides brand new books to underserved children at our food distributions and at the low income housing apartments we serve in Montgomery County. We hope to resume our reading program at these distributions once students return to in-person school.
We give out brand new books at Title I schools to help children in need build an at home library that they can enjoy and take pride in. We would like to do this at more schools, but the costs can be prohibitive when serving schools of 1000+ children. We are looking for volunteers that would be willing to help us by hosting a book drive at your workplace, school, neighborhood, church, etc. or donate a few new books via our Amazon Smile link here:
Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours for hosting a book drive at our food distributions on the first and third Fridays of each month at the TP Seventh Day Adventist Church Center (6810 Eastern Ave NW, Washington, DC 20012) from 9am-11am. While we welcome all donations, students may not earn SSL hours for individual donations or for hosting book drives virtually or from home. (Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.)
Please email Roxanne (thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com) if you would like to make a difference in a child's life.
Thanks!
