Let’s bring back the lost art of handwritten letters and write some lovely notes to seniors!

 

PROJECT DIRECTIONS

  1. Respond to this opportunity;
  2. Click here to view and print letter templates to color and write a message – or design your own!
  3. Drop off your completed letters at the Upcounty Consolidation Hub (12900 Middlebrook Road Germantown, MD 20874) between January 15 - January 22. Please follow signage onsite for drop-off instructions.

Drop off Hours:

January 15: 11 AM - 4 PM

January 18-21: 9 AM - 5 PM

January 22: 11 AM - 4 PM

 

 Tips for writing your letters:

  • Keep Messages Positive
    • Suggested topics include: sharing hopeful messages, well wishes, and positive thoughts
    • Prayers are welcome, but please avoid excessive religious comments
  • Share information about yourself, like hobbies, pets, travel, interests, etc.
    • If interested, you may include your first name and age, but not other personal contact information
    • Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your letters. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself.
  • Please refrain from including language around politics, violence, foul language, and other controversial topics

 

SSL: MCPS students will receive 30 minutes of SSL credit for completing and returning 3 letters (they must submit all 3 for credit). Students may not exceed submission of 15 letters (or 2.5 SSL hours) and they must be completed in increments of 3 (i.e., 3 letters = 30 minutes, 6 letters = 1 hour, 9 letters = 1.5 hours, 12 letters = 2 hours, or 15 letters = 2.5 hours).

When you drop off your project, all volunteers will be required to fill out an online with your name, email address, and project(s) you're dropping off. If you are requesting SSL hours, you'll receive a signed SSL form at drop-off.

LETTER RECIPIENTS

These letters will be donated to seniors at Housing Opportunities Commission Senior Housing, such as Waverly House and Elizabeth House, and EveryMind's senior programs, Representative Payee and Friendly Visitor.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
