Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to kids and young adults with special needs and is looking for high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the basketball court.  The program is run by a head coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock Creek Forest Elementary in Chevy Chase runs from 12:00 - 1:00pm every Sunday beginning September 7th and ending on October 19th. 

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian  and must be completed outside of school hours. Each week are offer clothing to community members. You can help us to sort those clothes and hang them on racks to prep for the next food distribution.

Spend some time with a client who is further declined, who would benefit from a one on one interaction. This is a great opportunity to share your kindness, and provide comfort to individuals who struggle with big groups. Possibilities include walking around, singing/playing music, reading a story, or just a friendly conversation.

We are hoping to share the latest photography techniques and capabilities with our Day Program participants. If you are interested in teaching an enthusiastic group of older adults how to capture the beauty of nature and character and personality of people, we would love to hear from you!

Little Bennett Campground is hosting a spooky Haunted Trail and Magic Pumpkin Patch this Fall, and needs volunteers to help it be the spookiest place in the woods!

We have 4 ways you can help us! See choices below, and choose the shift(s) that work best for you.

1. Decorate Camp Store, Booth & Trail (Sept. 22, 23, 24, Mon./Tues./Weds. 3-6pm.) Help us decorate for Halloween in the building, around the campground, and on the haunted trail.

2. Haunted Trail Set Up (Sept. 30, October 1 & 2 Tues./Weds./Thurs. 3-6pm.)
Help us set up the stations on the haunted trail. Could include carrying supplies, setting up tents, hanging props in trees, and staging scenes.

3. Magic Pumpkin Patch Guide (Friday Nights Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and Oct 31. 5-8pm.) Set up and monitor the Magic Pumpkin Patch by greeting campers, helping children decorate seed markers, and guiding them through "planting" their magic seeds. At end of night, move pumpkins to the Magic Pumpkin Patch.

4. Haunted Trail Volunteers (Saturday Nights, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Nov 1) (6-9pm) Dress up and take your place on the Haunted Trail to deliver jump scares or support the behind-the-scenes team with fog machines, sound effects, and more.

Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 90 concerts by the Aug, 2025, involving more than 400 student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 10 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

We are actively recruiting talented musicians from K-12 to join our mission. MusicAid hosts biweekly or monthly concerts at various assisted living facilities near Potomac and Arlington, Join MusicAid today and earn up to 4 SSL hours for contributing to our concert performances! SSL hours vary based on your performance duration and the length of the concert.

We appreciate all types of performances, including but not limited to instrument playing, singing, dancing, talk shows, comedy acts, poetry readings, and more. Whether you're a solo act, duo, trio, or group, you're invited to perform.

We offer the following equipment at the facility: a piano, a music stand, and a Bluetooth speaker. A Microphone will also be provided for singing performance.

Come out and help care for our animals.  Our Saturday workdays involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water buckets and troughs, keeping pastures maintained, and performing regular animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, regular exams, giving shots, hoof trims, and more.

This position is for adults.

We have quite a number of elderly and special needs animals at our sanctuary, and are looking for someone who is specifically interested in and capable of assisting with their care several times a week on an ongoing basis.  Responsibilities include: 

- Giving oral medication as instructed

- Administering shots (IM and SubQ) as instructed

- Bandaging 

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

- Keeping detailed observation notes

Additional duties could include: 

- transport of animals to local veterinarians

- light cleaning of their housing areas and replenishing waters

Silver Spring Village sustains a robust neighbors-helping-neighbors network that supports older adults who wish to live as independently as possible and be fully engaged in their community as they age. Our service area includes zip codes 20910, 20901, 20815 east of Rock Creek Park part of 20902 (Wheaton) east and south of Wheaton Regional Park as well as Kemp Mill.

Members are looking to connect with people through friendly visits/friendly phone calls to help them feel less isolated. A friendly visit can sometimes include a walk around the neighborhood. 

Volunteering with Silver Spring Village is flexible; you can spend as much time volunteering as your schedule permits. Village volunteers must undergo a criminal background screening and attend an orientation/training session before volunteering. Looking for education-minded adults who love to work with young folks in helping them learn about animals and responsibility. Retired people especially welcome!

Our Saturday workdays run from 9-1 and involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water troughs and buckets, checking on animals, doing pasture maintenance, painting fences, and more.  Young people will learn the skills of proper tool usage (and putting them away!), how to interact safely and appropriately with large animals, how to work with many different kinds of people in a team, and more. This is a very welcoming and warm environment.

We're looking for a dedicated volunteer every Friday at 9 AM to help with our Friday Produce Delivery. This role is essential in ensuring fresh produce reaches the communities we serve in downtown Silver Spring.

Important: Volunteers must have a vehicle large enough to transport 50 produce bags.

Join our team as a Client Check-In and Data Entry Assistant to support families in need! We're looking for friendly, detail-oriented volunteers (BILINGUAL) comfortable using computers to help with check-ins, appointment scheduling, and logging services. Shifts are available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. Training is provided!

Your role will ensure smooth operations during our service hours and help families access essential resources efficiently.

Responsibilities:

Greet and check clients in using a spreadsheet

Accurately log diaper distribution details

Assist clients in scheduling future appointments via SignUpGenius

Enter client visit data into our secure database (Service Insights)

Maintain strict confidentiality and accuracy at all times

At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday, So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help direct traffic and should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and clothing to move around and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors, so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift.

**Only 18 years and older, and you will be standing for a long time and be alone for the majority of the shift**

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time.

In addition to our food pantry and pop-up distributions, the So What Else Montgomery County team also operates a robust home delivery program for clients all across the DMV who are unable to leave their homes, either due to disabilities, lack of transportation, or both. As a result, we are always in need of volunteer home delivery drivers that can donate their time, and their vehicle, to help transport groceries from our pantry to our clients. 

Requirements: Interested drivers must be 18 years or older, bring their own vehicle, and have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. 

Activity Description: Once signed up, volunteers will reach out to Megan ahead of time, confirming their presence, and then arrive at our pantry on the day and time of their choosing to pick up grocery bags and deliver them. Each driver will follow a predetermined route prepared by our team. Please text her once you sign up to get the delivery route with the number 2407054345. Most delivery routes take around 1-2 hours to complete, depending on the number of clients that day. More information can be provided at the time of the pick up.

*At this time, we DO NOT provide vehicles for drivers.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

*To get to our warehouse for your report time, type "4924 Wyaconda Rd, North Bethesda, MD" into your GPS. This will take you directly to the entrance of the parking lot. After you pull into the lot, drive straight and turn left as if you are headed to Dogtopia. Keep driving and pass Dogtopia. Our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. Parking is not permitted in front of Dogtopia and against the fence. When you arrive please park and look for a staff person by the loading dock or in the resource center, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

What is a Teen Advisory Board (TAB)? TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. The Teen Advisory Board will provide feedback on programs, assist librarians with planning and running events and will be library advocates.

As part of our Adopt-a-Road commitment to the historic Prathertown
neighborhood in Gaithersburg, we periodically offer activities that
keep the area clean. For three hours on a Saturday morning participants
can pick up trash and recyclables found along Wightman Road, between
Brink Road and Aspenwood Road.

Grab a friend or 2, put a group together and join us. Make it fun day, enjoy
the fresh air and earn SSL hours by cleaning up! We meet at the corner
of Prathertown and Wightman Road. If you can, bring a non-perishable food item to donate to our food drive.

Open Door Sports provides after-school sports programs to children with special needs and is looking for middle and high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the soccer field.  The program is run by two coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Bannockburn Elementary in Bethesda runs from 4:30 - 5:30pm every Tuesday afternoon beginning September 9th and ending on October 28th. No practice on September 23rd

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Spend your morning supporting survivors of natural disasters, asylum seekers, and first responders. SAMU First Response is an international humanitarian nonprofit 501(c)(3), that draws from over 40 years of experience. Their programming provides much needed food, medical attention, clothing, hygienic care, emergency respite and travel support to their clientele. Volunteers will make over 250 instant oatmeal kits, a perfect grab-and-go meal for residents of the SAMU migrant respite center.

Teens ages 12-18 are invited to join us for a morning of volunteering with our close partner organization DC Central Kitchen, which uses volunteer help to transform 3,000 pounds of otherwise wasted food into 5,000 healthy meals for schools, homeless shelters, and social service agencies. Volunteers will work in their professional kitchen to chop vegetables, sort fresh produce, mix salads, portion meals, and more!

Join the Youth Action Institute on a trip to Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home where we will visit the residents to bring them companionship and cheer.

During this trip, most volunteers will run crafts and a game of BINGO with the residents while a small group goes from room to room to visit with bed-bound patients. Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home provides both short-term and long-term care for low-income individuals to ensure that everyone has access to quality care full of dignity, compassion and respect.

Pantry Assistant – Distribute food items to guests; must be able to lift over 30 lbs.

Client Check-In Support – Use our software to check in clients, collect information, and schedule future appointments.

Check-Out Support – Weigh food items and input totals into our system.Appointment Setter – Return client calls, set up appointments 

Administrative Support – Help with behind-the-scenes paperwork and coordination. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially appreciated for client-facing roles.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. The farm at Cedar Ridge is a little over half an acre of vegetable and fruit crops, tended by volunteers from our church community and the surrounding neighborhood. Each year we grow about 2 tons of organic food, which is distributed to people in need, in collaboration with Manna Food Center. Although Maryland is the wealthiest state in the US as measured by median household income (and Montgomery County is the second wealthiest county in Maryland), poverty and hunger are widespread and growing problems.

Weather permitting, we will meet on the farm Sundays 9-11AM from June through September to plant, weed, water and harvest the crops. We have all the tools and equipment, but we ask people to dress to get dirty and bring a water bottle. There are tasks for all ages and abilities.

Description: We’re seeking compassionate volunteers to support families in need through our Montgomery County distribution center, which receives thousands of pounds of donated food, clothing, diapers, toys, and essential household items daily. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring these items reach the people who need them most.

Tasks may include distributing food to families, preparing grocery bags for home deliveries, organizing donated goods, assisting with inventory, loading and unloading delivery vehicles, and maintaining a clean and welcoming space for all.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful difference, earn SSL hours, and engage the whole family—children over 10 are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian (required for anyone under 16).

Please make sure to wear close-toed shoes when volunteering!

NEW: Traffic Volunteer (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM) – We need 1 volunteer daily participating in the Maryland Community Service Program to assist with managing traffic outside. This role is outdoors, so please dress accordingly( 18+ only)

Our food distribution operations have moved to South Lake Elementary School. Every Tuesday, So What Else, with the help of our incredible team, provides free food to over 500 people. Volunteers can park in the parking lot that is to the right down the hill close to the playground at the school.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. This shift involves interacting with clients, other volunteers, and So What Else team members. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty( NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. The upcoming Back to School Block Party, hosted by Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, is scheduled for Friday, September 26th from 1-4PM at the BlackRock Center for the Arts.

We are planning this event in partnership with the BlackRock Center and the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, and our goal is to create a fun, safe space for Upcounty youth where they can both hang out with each other and access resources most relevant to them.

We will have food, outdoor games, a small resource fair, student performances, and much more!

There will also be an opportunity to share your voice and earn SSL hours for advocacy.

Volunteers in the program, contribute at least four hours a month of time, must be 18 years of age, and approved background checks, as well as attend a virtual orientation.

arketing & Communications? Experienced with Social Media, Search Engine Optimization? Photography / Videography?    We are looking for people with the expertise and experience to work with our team to improve our presence on the most popular social media platforms, and  performance in online search engines. We always need help with updating our website and social media meta and image alternate descriptions.

Our food drivers deliver food from our pantry (located in Rockville United Methodist Church, near Rockville Town Center) to needy people in Rockville. They need to have a driver's license and the use of a car, and they need to be able to carry bags of food. When they get a call from the Officer of the Day with a request, they go to the pantry, check the client's eligibility in the records, call the client to schedule a delivery, and pack and deliver the food to the client.

Drivers can sign up for one day a month or more if they desire, and they can do the deliveries whenever it's convenient for them and the client (you don't have to be available the whole day). Most of our drivers do the deliveries in the afternoon/early everning. Some of our drivers work with a partner - a friend or a spouse - and some work alone. There are days that no call comes in, and sometimes there are several. If (rarely) there are too many, some can be passed on to next day's driver. If interested, email rockvillemdhelp@gmail.com.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Connie Morella Library in Bethesda, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health. In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead.

The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Elevate the Future is a U.S.-based student-led 501(c)(3) organization committed to increasing access to business and computer science education around the world. We have 43 chapters in 18 countries with over 400 team members. Elevate the Future's Maryland Chapter seeks remote student volunteers for its Natural Sciences Education Department, even subjects that are not extensively covered in MCPS curricula. Applications are ongoing, and we encourage any students interested in the physical sciences, forensics, and/or medical sciences to apply.

The Natural Sciences Education Department may also host educational events and competitions, including but not limited to guest speaker seminars, pitch contests, and remote lab activities, for which developers are permitted to instruct.

Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time.

Create pieces to incorporate into the Yarn Bomb panels that decorate Wheaton every fall. These should be two-dimensional and can be granny squares, flowers,  real or imaginary creatures, or other crochet or knit creations in acrylic yarn - of any size or shape in order to fill up 20"x60" or 54"x45" sized panels.

AWLMC is a non profit 501(c)3 All Volunteer Cat Shelter specializing in finding PURR-fect and FURR-Ever Homes for Cats and Kittens.  As a member of the Intake Team, you will assist in reviewing and selecting  potential cats who are in need of a new PURR-fect Home.  Interested? English and Citizenship Tutoring Program

Meet with one of SHC’s adult English language learners to support their in-class learning by reviewing material and helping with homework.  SHC provides tutors with training, a dedicated volunteer resources website, and regular meeting and training opportunities. SSL Opportunity: Learn How to Connect with Older Adults

Learn effective strategies for working with older adults and plan interactive discussion programs with older adults by joining the Link Generations Long Distance Club. Student volunteers will meet via Zoom Monday, Sept. 8, 4-5pm to learn basic principles of aging and best practices for connecting with older adults. This Long Distance Club will meet monthly, and students are welcome to attend as many of the sessions as they can. We’ll be inviting older adults to join future sessions. Students will learn best practices for engaging in interactive conversations with older adults about common interests, each other’s experiences, and helping each other feel a sense of social connections. Examples of discussion themes include music through the ages, teaching technology skills (show off your Smartphone and App skills), and favorite hobbies.

If you are interested in earning SSL hours for this activity, please let us know. Link Generations staff will facilitate each Zoom session. SSL hours are awarded for each hour of participation in the Zoom training and interactive discussion sessions.

Volunteering with Fire/Rescue is rewarding and offers the flexibility to contribute according to your availability. Membership is dependent upon successful completion of a fingerprint, background check and medical exam - all provided free.

Yearly, in October we have a Community Give Back day. This is an opportunity for businesses, Community Leaders and residents to get together for a fun filled fall festival day.

We host a Parade, A children's Festival, A Petting Zoo, a Business fair and a Classic Car show for the residents of Potomac and surrounding areas to enjoy! We help promote area organizations who continually serve our community.
