Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The Civic Center Puppet Show is a fun and inspiring program for kids ages 2–10, filled with creativity, imagination, learning and laughter! We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make the magic happen.

What you'll do:

Assist children with simple arts and crafts

Help with cutting, gluing, and coloring activities

Support kids as they explore respect and sharing through crafting

No special skills required—just a love of fun, play, and helping little ones enjoy a creative experience!
All children will be under adult supervision—volunteers just get to join in on the fun!

MUM serves individuals and families in crisis in the Silver Spring, Wheaton, Takoma Park, Kensington, Rockville and Aspen Hill communities, specifically residents within eight zip codes of Montgomery County (20902, 20906, 20853, 20895, 20896, 20901, 20910, and 20912). MUM provides food assistance as well as financial assistance for eviction prevention, utility shut-off prevention/restoration and prescription medication

MUM needs volunteer drivers willing to pick-up rescued food from local partners in the Mid-County area and deliver to our office. Drivers need to have flexible hours, in most cases we are given short notice for pick-up. Driver must have a reliable car.

In order to meet increased demand for our services, MUM needs volunteers to help clients sign up for appointments, access the food pantry and to help with data entry and other tasks.  Volunteers should have good communication skills and are preferably bilingual English/Spanish speakers.  

Grace Helping Hands is seeking volunteers to assist with social media content creation and posting to help promote our mission of providing essential toiletry kits to homeless women and children.

To ensure consistency and impact, we ask that volunteers commit to six (6+) months of service and be able to dedicate three hours per week to this role.

SSL Hours for Social Media Support
Middle and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by reviewing, finalizing, and creating content for our social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

SSL Hour Equivalency:
Three (3) social media content pieces reviewed, finalized, or created (e.g., Instagram or Facebook posts) = One (1) SSL hour (upon approval by Grace Helping Hands).

Instructions for Earning SSL Hours:
Content Review and Creation Requirements:
Review content created by the social media team, including:
- Titles and descriptions.
- Introduction/context of the post.
- Message clarity and impact.
- Hashtags and keywords.
- Attached images, videos, and links (e.g., YouTube).
- Proofread for grammar, spelling, and style.
- Edit, finalize, or create engaging content specifically designed for Instagram and Facebook.

Submission Process:
Submit the reviewed, finalized, or created content as a document to volunteer@gracehelpinghands.org for approval.
Make edits based on feedback provided by Grace Helping Hands.

Approval Process:
An adult representative from Grace Helping Hands will review the finalized content.

SSL hours will be awarded once three (3) content pieces (including Instagram and Facebook posts) have been approved.

Additional Notes:
All social media content will be managed and approved by Grace Helping Hands.
Volunteers assisting with website updates will work on improving the site’s layout, adding relevant content, and optimizing functionality. Prior experience with web editing is helpful but not required.

To ensure consistency and impact, we ask that volunteers commit to at least six months of service and be able to dedicate three hours per week to this role. Responsibilities include creating and scheduling posts, engaging with our online community, and helping spread awareness about our mission to provide toiletry kits and feminine products to homeless women and children. Come out to learn how to recognize the top least-wanted invasive weeds in our area, get some fresh air, help restore habitat and potentially get a workout in the process! We will work on spreading mulch in previously cleared areas, and on removing non-native invasive vines from the park area adjacent to the high school. Our goal is to save trees from invasive vines and thereby help combat climate change. Please spread the word and join us! No experience is necessary (just a desire to learn). SSL hours are available.

This is the park directly adjacent to Richard Montgomery High School. We will meet in the park by the driveway to the bus loop  (https://goo.gl/maps/g4eg76Rk9yjbxRJK6). Street parking is available.

The Community Design Lab at BlackRock is excited to host a student‑led garden build, and we’d love for you to be part of it! Together with local students, we’ll be planting a vibrant new garden filled with native plants that support pollinators and bring more life and color to the BlackRock campus.

This will be a fun, hands‑on day where you’ll dig, plant, and team up with teens who are leading the design and installation. No experience needed—just bring your energy, curiosity, and a willingness to get your hands in the soil.

Come out, connect with new people, and help create a welcoming community space that blends creativity, service, and care for the environment. Let’s grow something meaningful—together!

Join us as we partner with Germantown HELP to distribute food bags to our local community.  We will be having over 400 families drive thru for our Holiday drive.

Activities include  transferring over 400 produce bags and 400 dry good bags to be handed out in our parking lot.  Assistance will also be needed outside with the distribution.  This will also include set up and tear down. NOTE:    This is a rain or shine event.  Please be prepared for the weather that day.

What is a Teen Advisory Board (TAB)? TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. The Teen Advisory Board will provide feedback on programs, assist librarians with planning and running events and will be library advocates.

Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Volunteers have an initial commitment period of one year and are requested to participate in at least one deployment per year. To help remove barriers to volunteering, approved travel expenses are paid or reimbursed by Humane World for Animals.

Looking for an individual who is comfortable with using QuickBooks Online, preferably with nonprofit experience, to help keep our books, run reports as needed, assist with budgeting. We have very basic accounting needs with no staff to pay, benefits to manage, outstanding invoices and receipts. Most of our income is through personal donations with less than one grant per year. When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase items and assemble the bags. The bag can be a reusable grocery size bag, small laundry basket, or bucket. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it.  We have a one-click link to make purchasing easy. The event runs from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 25th, but we could use support starting at 11am and continuing to 5pm with setup and cleanup. Join us on Friday, 11/14/2025 as we partner with Germanton HELP to assemble over 800 Bags of food to be distributed on Saturday, 11/15/2025.  We will be assembling over 400 bags of dry goods and 400 bags of fresh produce to supply over 400 families with food for the Holiday season.  Activities include assembling and lifting 800 bags of food.  This will include set up, tear down and prepping for Saturday's food drive.  

Volunteer and SSL sign starts at 3:55pm.  Assembling will start at 4:00pm.  You will earn 2.5 SSL hours.   SSL parents please pick up by 6:45pm at the latest.

Then AWLMC has an exciting opportunity for You - Fostering!  As an Adult Foster you bring into your home a Cat on a temporary basis (normally only 14 days) preparing Her/Him for their FURR-Ever Home.  As a Kitten Foster, the kittens normally stay with you until they are adopted.  Your participation provides the Cat/Kittens with much needed socialization, human interaction which prepares the cat in finding their FURR-Ever Home. Plus you get the joy of their company!  AWLMC provides everything necessary for you to care for Your Cat/Kitten. This is an amazing opportunity to gain volunteer experience helping Arise and Flourish, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance use and misuse.  During the last ten years, Arise and Flourish has paved the way through public and private schools on educating our youth of the dangers associated with addiction. Our program delivers a robust and real-life look into the cycle of addiction and provides an understanding, knowledge and insight on how to exercise prevention. Arise and Flourish’s family of dedicated volunteers have delivered our program to more than 350 schools and have reached over 44,000 students with our impactful message of prevention and hope. In addition to our visits to schools, we are also asking for the student’s assistance to continue the education of addiction and prevention through SSL hours. 

What students will do:

Student will first need to complete the volunteer form/parent/guardian permission slip and submit via to e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org. Please note that MCPS has not vetted the YouTube videos created by our organization and parents/guardians are responsible for previewing the videos and then providing parent permission for their students to view the videos.

Once approved, students will watch two video presentations provided by our organization.

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

When your paper or art project is complete, e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org your 2-page paper or an electronic copy of your art project and paragraph to collect your signed SSL sheet for this project. Students will need to cc their parents as well on the email submission. Please allow 3-5 business days to receive your signed SSL form.

Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. We ask that students include their first name, grade and school only on each submission.

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

We are looking for a talented team of High School and Middle School Students to develop projects which will help those who have impairment and medical needs.

Project concepts can cover the full range of available options to incorporate skill in 3d printing, robotics, design, programming, medical and nursing care and other areas to serve the practical needs of those with disabilities or medical needs in our community.

It would be helpful to have volunteers remain active with the meetings throughout the 2025/2026 school year as it would help with the continuity of the development of the projects.

We are planning to meet weekly at Rockville Public Library or Potomac Public Library.  Participants should have an interest in helping others and some experience in one or more of the areas mentioned above. The initial meetings will be about concepts and we will collectively work to design solutions. At that point we will work with the target community of individuals who are intended to benefit from the project to further refine and test the solution.

We will be meeting Tuesdays at 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm weekly at Rockville Public Library during the 2025/2026 school year.

Begun after the death of mother and U.S. diplomat Sarah Debbink Langenkamp, Ride for Your Life is a 10-mile slow ride from Downtown Bethesda to the Lincoln Memorial dedicated to creating change on our roadways.

Marking World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we will rally at the memorial with safe streets leaders and members of Congress to demand better — better infrastructure and better laws — for all those who use our roads.

We are looking for volunteers to support registration for riders (8:30-10:00am in Bethesda), to usher event attendees to correct locations (8:30-10:30am in Bethesda AND 11:30-1:30pm in Washington, DC) , and to support event set-up and breakdown (8:30-10:00am in Bethesda, 11:30-1:30pm in Washington, DC) .

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

For nearly 50 years, the City of Rockville has operated an annual Holiday Drive that relies on a collaborative partnership with local churches, schools, civic organizations, service clubs, businesses, social service agencies, and individuals working together to distribute holiday baskets to Rockville families and seniors in need. The Germantown Historical Society, Menare Foundation and Boy Scout Troop 1325 sponsor a large Flea Market on the first Saturdays April through November at the MARC commuter parking lot, Rt. 118 and Bowman Mill Dr. in Germantown. Volunteers will help direct traffic inside the customer parking lot, run errands, help customers with purchases and collect trash. Volunteers will work in pairs and will be provided with safety vests and gloves.

Arise and Flourish, is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance abuse prevention by sharing stories from persons in long-term recovery. Through the schools and community, we bring real life stories to our youth showing the devastation of the disease of addiction. By emphasizing the importance of understanding the cycle of addiction, our goal is to arm our youth with the knowledge of the dangers associated with drug and alcohol use, how to prevent addiction, and how to seek help.

Since 2017, Arise and Flourish has helped to bring a greater awareness of the addiction problem by visiting 350 Middle and High schools in Montgomery County, Maryland and speaking to more than 44,000 students.  We are run by volunteers who dedicate their time to visiting the schools. In order for our organization to grow and bring continued awareness to the schools and community, we need your help to continue our mission.

We are looking for young people in recovery who have been sober for one year or more and are interested in becoming a volunteer with Arise and Flourish, Inc. to speak to MCPS MS and HS students, sharing their personal story and educating them about the cycle of addiction.

Join in the fun and help support Takoma Park's favorite event: Monster Bash! Monster Bash participants will get to partake in crafts, games, food music and fun activities.

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to, set up and break down of the event as well as manning activity stations throughout the event. We are looking for outgoing and friendly people, and while all jobs are not physically demanding, they all do require the ability to work on uneven ground and lots of walking.

Opportunity Title: Professional Development Workshop Interpretation Support (Spanish to English and English to Spanish)

Opportunity Description: We are looking for fully bilingual English Spanish speakers with native/heritage fluency (preferably in both languages but at least one) to provide consecutive interpretation support during our annual professional development workshop with an external company. The volunteers would be supporting the staff of external company in breakout rooms with 1 – 10 participants to streamline communication during these side sessions. Interpretation would be needed from both English to Spanish and Spanish to English and will be provided consecutively, not simultaneously. Volunteers are not required to be certified interpreters but should be completely comfortable interpreting between the two languages in a remote setting, and preferably having interpretation experience, whether through a formal position or volunteering.

Individuals assisting can do so virtually as this is a limited, one – time opportunity. They will need to have comfortability participating in a virtual call through Zoom. They will also need to review, sign, and return our Volunteer Personnel Manual, our Confidentiality Agreement.

KindSoup

This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to join us virtually from the comfort of their kitchens.

We come together on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm via Zoom. We focus on delicious, healthy, and hearty soup and stew recipes to share with our families and community members. Soup is then donated to local food assistance providers to store in freezers. By doing so, we help to fill the critical need for food security in our community.

Sign on to our KindSoup Zoom space (Mondays at 5:00 pm ET), and our guest chef will lead us in cooking a yummy soup or stew together.

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

The Look Again Resale Shop has been supporting the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington's (POB) sight-saving programs since 1992 with the sale of antiques, furniture, collectibles, clothing, books and more. The store depends on the generosity of area residents for donations of gently used items, which are available for purchase at fantastic prices. All store proceeds go toward making POB's vision programs in the community a reality.

We ask volunteers to join us for 3-4 hour shifts. Volunteers use and develop retail experience including displaying and organizing merchandise. Volunteers also enjoy the social support of working on a close-knit team. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old (ages 12-16 may volunteer with a parent/guardian).

Great for retired individuals! We are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM - 5 PM.

Look Again Resale shop in Kensington Maryland is looking for volunteers for our thrift/antique shop.  If you love vintage clothing, hard to find treasures and collectables then Look again resale shop is the place for you! Viers Mill Elementary School PTA will hold a fall carnival Saturday October 25th - we are looking for responsible, friendly and fun middle and high school students to set-up and run several carnival games and help with prizes, food, and costume parade.  Event runs from 11-2.  First shift runs 10-2 (arrive at 10 for set up), second shift 1-3  (arrive at 12:30, plan to stay for clean up until 4).

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Every Fall, we need to take down and clean the Big Train baseball sponsor banners, rake leaves, and pull weeds at Shirley Povich Field. Join us on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to noon to help put Povich Field to bed for the winter. 

October is Community Service Month in Montgomery County, so come on out to Povich Field, roll up your sleeves, and pitch in. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours are available for MCPS students.

Why It Matters

Shirley Povich Field is one of the Crown Jewels of the Montgomery County Parks system. Big Train baseball is committed to painting the excellence of the facility.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend.

Are you crafty and know the basics of crochet and want to help share that knowledge with others?

We welcome Adults and Students willing to teach beginning crochet at a free Crochet workshop at the Sandy Spring Museum's Willow Grove Opening on October 18, from noon to 3 pm.

Must have experience and knowledge of how to crochet so you can demonstrate and help teach others. Volunteers need to arrive by 12:45 PM to meet with leaders, get supplies and receive instructions. Volunteers leave by 3:15PM. Students receive SSL hours.

Parking is at Sherwood High School.

In addition to our food pantry and pop-up distributions, the So What Else Montgomery County team also operates a robust home delivery program for clients all across the DMV who are unable to leave their homes, either due to disabilities, lack of transportation, or both. As a result, we are always in need of volunteer home delivery drivers that can donate their time, and their vehicle, to help transport groceries from our pantry to our clients. 

Requirements: Interested drivers must be 18 years or older, bring their own vehicle, and have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. 

Activity Description: Once signed up, volunteers will reach out to Megan ahead of time, confirming their presence, and then arrive at our pantry on the day and time of their choosing to pick up grocery bags and deliver them. Each driver will follow a predetermined route prepared by our team. Please text her once you sign up to get the delivery route with the number 2407054345. Most delivery routes take around 1-2 hours to complete, depending on the number of clients that day. More information can be provided at the time of the pick up.

*At this time, we DO NOT provide vehicles for drivers.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

*To get to our warehouse for your report time, type "4924 Wyaconda Rd, North Bethesda, MD" into your GPS. This will take you directly to the entrance of the parking lot. After you pull into the lot, drive straight and turn left as if you are headed to Dogtopia. Keep driving and pass Dogtopia. Our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. Parking is not permitted in front of Dogtopia and against the fence. When you arrive please park and look for a staff person by the loading dock or in the resource center, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday, So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help direct traffic and should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and clothing to move around and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors, so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift.

**Only 18 years and older, and you will be standing for a long time and be alone for the majority of the shift**

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time.

Join our team as a Client Check-In and Data Entry Assistant to support families in need! We're looking for friendly, detail-oriented volunteers (BILINGUAL) comfortable using computers to help with check-ins, appointment scheduling, and logging services. Shifts are available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. Training is provided!

Your role will ensure smooth operations during our service hours and help families access essential resources efficiently.

Responsibilities:

Greet and check clients in using a spreadsheet

Accurately log diaper distribution details

Assist clients in scheduling future appointments via SignUpGenius

Enter client visit data into our secure database (Service Insights)

Maintain strict confidentiality and accuracy at all times

Provide respectful and friendly service to clients

Ideal Qualifications:

Comfortable with computers, spreadsheets, and web-based tools

Detail-oriented with solid organizational skills
