We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

Currently, we need help with development tasks such as writing thank you cards to donors or looking up phone/addresses for donors. We also need help organizing donation forms.

This is an in-person volunteer opportunity at our location in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Our Officers of the Day are the first to make contact with people calling for help. They work from home, using their phones. They call our voicemail system, retrieve the messages, and call people back.  (Most of our ODs protect their privacy by using *67 for these calls.) If the person requesting food assistance is in our service area, they get the information needed and pass it on to the Food Driver on duty. Financial assistace calls are passed on to the financial assistance officer (when we have the funds).  If the person is outside of our area or is requesting something we are not able to do, they refer people to other groups that might be able to help.

ODs are scheduled for the day, but they do not have to be available the whole day - they can check messages and call people back when they have the time. Messages that an OD is unable to get to are left on the voicemail system and handled by the following day's OD. Some ODs take one day a month, while others take several, depending on their availability.

Our food drivers deliver food from our pantry (located in Rockville United Methodist Church, near Rockville Town Center) to needy people in Rockville. They need to have a driver's license and the use of a car, and they need to be able to carry bags of food. When they get a call from the Officer of the Day with a request, they go to the pantry, check the client's eligibility in the records, call the client to schedule a delivery, and pack and deliver the food to the client.

Drivers can sign up for one day a month, or more, if they desire, and they can do the deliveries whenever it's convenient for them and the client (you don't have to be available the whole day). Most of our drivers do the deliveries in the afternoon/early everning. Some of our drivers work with a partner - a friend or a spouse - and some work alone. There are days that no call comes in, and sometimes there are several. If (rarely) there are too many, some can be passed on to next day's driver. If interested, email rockvillemdhelp@gmail.com.

The Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County (AWLMC) is a 501(c)3, nonprofit, all volunteer no paid positions, NO Kill Cat Shelter!  We are in need of an experienced Grant Writer to assist us in researching and writing successful grants in support of our Cat Shelter. Your talents will directly support our mission of assisting any and all Cats and Kittens seeking their new FURR-Ever Home.

Responsibilities:  (1) Work with our Grant Team in researching available grants from foundations, corporations and the Government (2) In coordination with the Grant Team develop potential clients (3) Help develop a tracking system on submitted grants (4) Work with the various AWLMC Teams for vital information necessary for a successful grant proposal

Opportunity for high school students to help preschool children have a morning of fun as part of a school fundraiser. Your main role will be to help the children stay safe, to support the parent and teacher volunteers, and to contribute to a fun environment for the kids by playing with and caring for them.

Description: While we no longer operate a pantry at Lakeforest Mall, we're still just as committed to serving the Gaithersburg community. Our food distribution operations have moved to South Lake Elementary School. Every Tuesday, So What Else, with the help of our incredible team, provides free food to over 500 people. Volunteers can park in the parking lot that is to the right down the hill close to the playground at the school.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. This shift involves interacting with clients, other volunteers, and So What Else team members. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty( NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

10:30 am to 2:30 pm ( 4 Hours): Volunteers will assist in setting up the distribution, breaking down empty boxes, cleaning up, and assisting with the distribution breakdown.

To get to our distribution site for your shift, Type "South Lake Elementary School, 18201 Contour Rd, Gaithersburg, MD" into your GPS. This will guide you to the school. For parking, please use the lot located to the right, down the hill, near the playground. After parking, walk up toward the distribution area and look for the So What Else van or team setup. Locate a team member and let them know you are there to volunteer at the distribution.

Description: We’re seeking compassionate volunteers to support families in need through our Montgomery County distribution center, which receives thousands of pounds of donated food, clothing, diapers, toys, and essential household items daily. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring these items reach the people who need them most.

Tasks may include distributing food to families, preparing grocery bags for home deliveries, organizing donated goods, assisting with inventory, loading and unloading delivery vehicles, and maintaining a clean and welcoming space for all.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful difference, earn SSL hours, and engage the whole family—children over 10 are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian (required for anyone under 16).

Please make sure to wear close-toed shoes when volunteering!

NEW: Traffic Volunteer (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM) – We need 1 volunteer daily participating in the Maryland Community Service Program to assist with managing traffic outside. This role is outdoors, so please dress accordingly( 18+ only)

Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks who have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

As part of our Adopt-a-Road commitment to the historic Prathertown
neighborhood in Gaithersburg, we periodically offer activities that
keep the area clean. For three hours on a Saturday morning participants
can pick up trash and recyclables found along Wightman Road, between
Brink Road and Aspenwood Road.

Grab a friend or 2, put a group together and join us. Make it fun day, enjoy
the fresh air and earn SSL hours by cleaning up! We meet at the corner
of Prathertown and Wightman Road. It is also "Souper Saturday"! Please bring a canned soup item to donate to our food drive.

Come and help individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities with their gifts and crafts for the holidays! You will be assigned a station and assist 75 individuals throughout the day.

One of our favorite events all year is our annual Holiday Dinner & Dance. People with developmental disabilities invite their families for a wonderful dinner and then everyone dances the night away!

Volunteers are needed to transform our gymnasium into a winter wonderland and to then help us with the dinner and dance. We'll be serving food and cleaning up and most of all, having a wonderful time! 

We have multiple 4 hour shifts available. We can discuss your availability after you sign up.

Nothing will put you more in the holiday spirit more than helping at this event! We can't wait to see you!

Your efficiency and attention to detail will ensure a smooth start to our event.

We are looking for volunteers for Opening Minds Through Art (OMA), an award-winning, evidence-based art program. OMA is a failure-free program designed to provide older adults with early-stage memory loss opportunities for creative self-expression and social engagement. Volunteers support participants as they create abstract art projects that engage their minds and break through cognitive barriers. Volunteers must attend training, all art sessions, and art show.

Help preserve the story of one of Maryland’s oldest African-American communities on December 29, 2025 from 9:00am-12:00pm and/or 1:00pm-5:00pm! Founded in 1883 by emancipated people, Prathertown is proud of its deep roots and cultural legacy. We’re seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help organize and catalog our collection of vinyl records, photos, and cassette tapes that capture decades of local history. The location is the Germantown Public Library at 19840 Century Blvd. Germantown, MD 20874.

Listen to, sort, and clean historic vinyl records, cassette tapes and 8mm film

Catalog artifacts in our database for public access

Organize and safely store items using archival-quality materials

In our Giving Garden, a grow-to-give garden in  Potomac, many of our fourteen  4ft x 25 ft raised bed boards need to be replaced. We are looking for a group to help us remove old boards and install new heavier pressure treated lumber in their place.  No real construction experience needed, just the ability to lift the wood, use drills and screwdrivers to anchor them. Very flexible on date and time. 

Opportunity Title: Translation Support (Farsi to English and English to Farsi)

Opportunity Description: We are looking for translation assistance of personal documents from a client to be included in an upcoming filing on their behalf. The translation from Farsi to English will need to include a certificate of translation and will be included in the asylum filing with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS does not require you to be a certified translator, but you do have to be fluent in both languages and competent to translate the document.

It is multiple short letters of only a few pages, although hand-written. We expect to have translation needs in this language up until the hearing in early December.

The UpCounty Consolidation Hub (currently at the UpCounty Regional Services Center) is serving families in need. We provide fresh produce, shelf stable foods, emergency and hygiene items, activity kits for kids and some social services for the families that we serve.

Drivers are needed on Thursdays to deliver food packages to the doorstep of vulnerable Upcounty families, drivers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs. Delivery is contactless.  Addresses provided upon arrival at the Hub on delivery day.

You will arrive at the UpCounty Hub between 10:45am-11:00am on Thursday and pull around to the side of the building to the loading dock. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN HANDICAP SPOTS! Food packages with addresses will be provided upon arrival. If possible please try to register for this shift by the Wednesday before so we can assign boxes to the correct number of cars.

Volunteering with Fire/Rescue is rewarding and offers the flexibility to contribute according to your availability. AHC has three properties in Montgomery County. The on-site Resident Services teams organize a variety of fun and educational events. Snack bags help us fight food insecurity and encourage engagement.

Snack bags are paper lunch bags filled with a small water bottle and 3 small snack items (crackers, Goldfish, chips, cookies, etc). Decorating the bags is fun but optional.

Join the Wheaton Arts Parade in working with families to create arts and crafts. 

SSL Volunteers are asked to arrive on time to help with setting up the multipurpose room, learn about the activity and assist others in the art-making. 

You will help with set-up, distrubiting materials and working with families to create an easy art and craft and help regather left over materials & clean up the room at the end of the workshop.

This is an amazing opportunity to gain volunteer experience helping Arise and Flourish, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance use and misuse.  During the last eleven years, Arise and Flourish has paved the way through public and private schools on educating our youth of the dangers associated with addiction. Our program delivers a robust and real-life look into the cycle of addiction and provides an understanding, knowledge and insight on how to exercise prevention. Arise and Flourish’s family of dedicated volunteers have delivered our program to more than 350 schools and have reached over 44,000 students with our impactful message of prevention and hope. In addition to our visits to schools, we are also asking for the student’s assistance to continue the education of addiction and prevention through SSL hours. 

What students will do:

Student will first need to complete the volunteer form/parent/guardian permission slip and submit via to e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org. Please note that MCPS has not vetted the YouTube videos created by our organization and parents/guardians are responsible for previewing the videos and then providing parent permission for their students to view the videos.

Once approved, students will watch two video presentations provided by our organization.

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. The goal of the Vision Zero youth ambassador program is to equip young adults to be the next generation of traffic safety leaders in their community. The program will educate Montgomery County high school students about traffic safety and the importance of roadway design, law enforcement, and education to achieve the goal of Vision Zero.

Montgomery County High school students selected to be a youth ambassador are required to commit to a 5-month program that teaches them different aspects of Vision Zero and participate in hands-on projects that bring awareness to safety needs in communities around the county. Youth Ambassadors are tasked to complete a group project that encompasses engineering, education, or enforcement topics. Resources and project guidance are provided from the County to execute projects that will ultimately improve safety in our communities.

Ambassadors are required to attend ALL sessions of the program.

Ambassadors that complete the program will gain extensive knowledge about Vision Zero and earn up to 46 Student Service-Learning Hours (SSL).

Looking for volunteers to help with our fall basketball league. Volunteers will be working with the game clock, the game book and the concession stand. The seasons are ongoing in the fall, winter and spring. Games will be on Saturdays and Sundays in the Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda and Gaithersburg area. We have boys from 2nd grade to 10th and girls from 4th grade to 8th grade. We are looking fro volunteers aged 13-18. TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. I was discouraged to read that the Trump administration will not be attending the COP30 Climate Conference. I would like to encourage more states to take action on climate change. I am impressed with the action taken by the U.S. Climate Alliance (https://usclimatealliance.org/about/). The U.S. Climate Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of governors advancing state-led, high-impact climate action. The Alliance members have collectively reduced net greenhouse gas emissions 24 percent below 2005 levels, while increasing their collective GDP by 34 percent (https://usclimatealliance.org/report/2025-annual-report/). This seems like a win-win for the environment and the economy.

No other countries have followed the United States in withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, but the Trump administration is using a mix of lobbying and economic threats to thwart emissions-cutting and environmental initiatives around the world.

It helped sink global talks on an ambitious plastics treaty. It has pressed Europe to abandon some of its green policies. And after intense campaigning last month, it derailed an agreement to curb pollution from international shipping.

Trump administration officials say they are fighting policies that would raise costs for consumers or hurt American industry.

“President Trump will not jeopardize our country’s economic and national security to pursue vague climate goals that are killing other countries,” Taylor Rogers, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The U.S. won’t be sending a high-level delegation to the annual global climate change conference — known this year as COP30 — which officially opens in Belém, Brazil, on Monday. But it will still influence the global climate trajectory, as the world’s largest historical emitter tries to convince other nations that environmental and clean energy goals aren’t worth pursuing.

“They are actively obstructing progress on climate, and that’s very significant,” said Niklas Höhne, who tracks global climate policy and is the co-founder of the NewClimate Institute in Germany. “Because the international system is all about cooperation.”

Many experts say the U.S. approach will run into some fundamental barriers. While Trump describes climate change as a “con job,” most world leaders still recognize the science that shows otherwise — and are steering their economies to cleaner energy after dramatic price drops in solar and wind.

Columbian President Gustavo Petro gave voice to that sentiment on Thursday, at the leaders’ summit that preceded COP30.

“Mr. Donald Trump isn’t coming. He’s behaving in a way that denies science, and he’s leading his society with eyes closed into the abyss and, with it, humanity,” Petro said. “Mr. Trump is wrong. Science illuminates the collapse if the United States doesn’t move toward decarbonizing its own economy.”

He suggested circumventing Trump and instead making deals with major U.S. states.

The U.S. government could succeed in “slowing down the shift to clean energy, [but] not in any way stopping the shift to clean energy,” said Manish Bapna, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Still, some politicians could be open to the administration’s message. Compared with Trump’s first term, the world is far more fragmented in its approach to climate change.

“Ten years ago, the world came together in Paris united in our determination to tackle the climate crisis. A consensus that was based on science that is unequivocal,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in Brazil on Thursday. “Today, sadly, that consensus is gone.”

Corporations have retreated from sustainability pledges, and politicians regularly frame the energy transition as a threat to jobs and wealth. Artificial intelligence-driven energy growth has fueled the argument that energy abundance matters more than cutting emissions.

In addition, few countries want to risk the ire of the world’s largest economy — or provoke a president with a social media megaphone.

The clearest example of how the U.S. can leverage its power came last month, as countries met in London for a landmark deal that would have required ships traversing international waters to cut emissions or pay a fee. Adoption looked certain; International Maritime Organization (IMO) members had agreed to the draft in April.

But then the Trump administration went on the offensive, vowing to “fight, block and tackle” to stop the measure, said Michael Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump Cabinet members issued a remarkable set of threats to nations that might support the pact, included blocking their vessels from U.S. ports, visa restrictions, and sanctions on individual officials. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said he called about 20 countries to apply pressure. Then he drafted a social media post for Trump — which the president shared with a light edit — decrying the “scam tax” and pledging, “The United States will NOT stand for this.”

Saudi Arabia tabled a motion to postpone talks for a year, and the work to rein in an industry responsible for 3 percent of global emissions was shelved.

Wright called the outcome at the IMO “a pivot point in this whole climate nonsense.”

“We want to bring our arguments to our opponents,” he said, speaking at an energy summit on Oct. 22 hosted by the America First Policy Institute, a think tank aligned with Trump. “We’re going to come back to realistic views on energy, and President Trump is just all-in on American energy dominance. That’s a win not just for America, that’s a win for the world.”

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (Rhode Island), the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works committee, said the administration used “a shock-and-awe thuggery approach that was effective.” He said the White House has become “indisputably” more aggressive on global climate issues, compared with Trump’s first term, and is captured “by the most extreme elements.”

“There is no such thing as negotiating with these people,” he said. “You have to be willing to resist.”

The U.S. hasn’t engaged on all climate and environmental issues. For instance, it skipped a summit on ocean protection and conservation and a conference on the financing of sustainable development.

As a general rule, though, the U.S. has stepped forward in matters involving fossil fuels.

That is what happened over the summer in Geneva, when 20 State Department employees showed up at plastic treaty talks with a clear red line: They’d oppose any limits on plastics production — in which fossil fuels are an essential component.

An agreement on plastics would have been the most important environmental treaty in a decade. But many nations argued that any worthwhile pact would need to rein in the growing volume of plastic production, rather than just focusing on better waste management.

After 11 tense days, the consensus-based talks hit an impasse. One negotiator from Tuvalu criticized the United States’ unprecedented “intransigence.”

Washington has also pushed for its fossil fuel interests in bilateral talks, including with India, which agreed in February to increase energy trade with the United States.

The European Union made a more specific pledge in a July trade deal, agreeing to purchase $750 billion in U.S. fossil fuels and nuclear products through 2028.

Now the U.S. is pressuring the E.U. to repeal or weaken regulations that would require corporations to address environmental and human rights issues in their supply chains. In October, Wright and the Qatari energy minister issued a joint letter to the E.U., saying the requirements would “disrupt trade and investments” and detailing article-by-article concerns. The letter specifically mentioned the risks to liquid natural gas supply.

The E.U. hasn’t directly responded, but the critique plays into anxieties that were already emerging within the bloc.

“There is a risk that the Europeans look like they are bossed around by the U.S.,” even if they are just addressing internal concerns, said Linda Kalcher, a former U.N. climate adviser and the founder of Strategic Perspectives, a Brussels-based climate policy group. “Certainly, this Trump administration is more assertive and targeted against any negotiations or policies that would lower the demand for fossil fuels.”

While the U.S. stance could further weaken the cohesion of the global system, it could also open new opportunities for other countries — especially China, which dominates the clean energy industry.

“The U.S. is really an outlier in its position,” said Nikki Reisch, director of the climate and energy program at the Center for International Environmental Law. “The U.S. is ceding global leadership.”

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make cookies and other baked treats to share with food insecure families in our community that we serve.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These baked treats are a nice way to provide a fun snack to go along with the other foods that we are providing for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form): 

NOTE: Items should be baked fresh the day before.  Please do not make cookies ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them.

-Please take photo of them being made and a group photo of the baked items once you've finished. 

-Cookies and muffins should be put into Ziplock bags in batches of 4 and loaves should be wrapped tightly in either Saran Wrap or a gallon size Ziplock bag. Please label them and note if nuts are present.  

-Make a log by writing down the number items made, and have your parent initial it. 

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the baked items and your log of the amounts of the items.  Please submit your work via the form only once.  

Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator.  They will then credit your hours. 

Baked goods donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your baked goods in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

We are also able to accept baked goods at the TPSS Coop (201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912) on ALL Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30am, but please let us know what dates and the amounts you are going to be donating by emailing us at thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com at least 3 days in advance.  Please note that if the weather is bad (rain/snow) you must contact us the day before so that we can give you an alternative drop off location.  Please drop off your baked goods behind the TPSS Coop building on Columbia Avenue to one of our members (not inside to a TPSS Coop employee). Silver Spring Village members request rides either because they do not drive or are having a medical procedure for which they should not be driving. Volunteers drive members to medical appointments, exercise classes, grocery shopping or to Village events. 

Volunteering with Silver Spring Village is flexible, you can choose to do as much or as little as your schedule permits. All volunteers must undergo a criminal background screening and an orientation/training session before volunteering. Members who have computers, cell phones, smart televisions and other technological tools are often asking for help with their devices. It could be helping a member set up a new printer, helping them out when their device freezes or teaching them how to use their smart TV.

Members sometimes ask for volunteers to run errands for them especially since many are no longer able to drive themselves. Examples include: picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy, groceries from the supermarket, or taking donations to a thrift store.

Often members need help organizing a small space in their home such as a room, a cabinet or a drawer. They might ask for help with getting their documents in order at the end of the year or organizing clothes in their closets for the new season. Sometimes the request has to do with downsizing. Volunteers who would like to become Home Organizers receive a special training and often times work in pairs.

Members are looking to connect with people through friendly visits/friendly phone calls to help them feel less isolated. A friendly visit can sometimes include a walk around the neighborhood.
