The Bullis Summer Programs Counselor in Training (CIT) Program is an experiential program for students typically between the ages of 14-15, designed to develop core leadership skills, integrity, character, communication, and initiative. The CIT acquires skills through active participation in the summer program activities, with instructors and staff as mentors. The CIT program is a model for promoting positive group dynamics, inspiring creativity, and fostering a nurturing and caring environment for all children.

Availability:

Candidates must be available to volunteer for at least one consecutive, two-week session between June 22nd-  August 14th  to participate in the program. Additional hours are available upon request. Please state which 2-week session(s) you are available for and if you would be interested in participating in the CIT program for more than one two-week session. CITs must choose the two-week session for which they are available.

Two-week Sessions:

Session 1: June 22 - July 2 (no camp July 3)

Session 2: July 6 - July 17

Session 3: July 20 – July 31

Session 4: August 3 - August 14

Program Requirements and Expectations

CIT roles are available in Athletic Camps, Specialty Camps, and Bulldog Day Camp

The CIT Program Coordinator will place CITs in specific camps if accepted into the program. CITs will work closely with the camp instructors during their assigned weeks.

In addition to on-site participation, CITs will be required to fulfill brief daily reflection activities online outside of camp time.

Must be available to volunteer for at least two consecutive weeks to participate in the program; no exceptions.

You must be 14 years old by June 22, 2026, and have completed 8th grade to apply. If you turn 14 later in the summer (prior to August 3), please let us know in the application. You may be considered for a later session.

Before Summer Programs start, there will be a mandatory training session for all CITs to prepare for camp.

CITs will receive Student Service Learning (SSL) hours based on the number of hours worked during the summer, including the training session. SSL hours are subject to the CIT Program Coordinator's discretion.

If accepted into the program, the CIT must provide further documentation indicating they are in good standing with their current school. If required documentation does not display desired outcomes, CIT's acceptance may be forfeited.

CIT must complete their two-week commitment, or SSL hours will be forfeited.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Kensington Library in Kensington, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps to provide free federal and state tax preparation services to local residents. This is an incredible opportunity to interact with and help many people, learn new skills, or use your existing ones to make a real difference in your community.

Piano Pals for ES Children:  Fox Chapel ES, Gaithersburg ES, Brown Station ES, Clopper Mill ES are reopening in October through Spring Break. Tanglewood HOC Apartments will continue on Saturday mornings.  Upcounty HOC at Stewartown begins on Tuesdays in October.   For training of new volunteers in order to mentor in the Fall 2025, contact: thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.  Dates/location by appointment.

Mentor a child per half hour session afterschool.  Using the detailed world renowned piano curriculum, Faber Piano Adventures,  teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at an elementary school or HOC facility.

Mentor a child at these facilities:

Brown Station ES on Mondays, Stewartown HOC on Tuesdays 4 to 5:30, Fox Chapel on Thursdays after school, Gaithersburg ES on Thursdays after school, Clopper Mill ES on Fridays after school, Tanglewood HOC on Saturdays from 11 to 12:30.

Using the detailed Faber Piano Adventures,   teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at Tanglewood Housing for Title 1 families.

YMCA Youth Links Mentoring is looking for adult volunteers to be positive role models for children between the ages of 5-15. Our program is a collaboration between Montgomery County Child Welfare, the Circuit Court, Montgomery County Public Schools, the Department of Juvenile Services and the YMCA. Many of the children in our program live in foster or other out-of-home care; most are monitored by Child Welfare because of neglect, abuse or other challenges in the home.  Mentoring guarantees these young people that there is someone who cares about them, and that they are not alone in dealing with life’s day-to-day challenges.  

With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can support boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities. Volunteer mentors are required to attend informational and training sessions. Once matched with a mentee, mentors are encouraged to attend continuing education workshops and program events.

Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship over a period of time between a youth and more knowledgeable and supportive person who provides consistent support, guidance and concrete help. Research has shown that mentors can have a significant positive impact on the life of a young person.

Mentoring programs operate at Twinbrook Elementary School, Meadow Hall Elementary School, and Beall Elementary School. If you are interested in being a mentor, you must complete an application and participate in a screening process.

The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Our goal is to help children learn about gardening and understand the importance of sustaining their environment.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Ross Boddy Neighborhood Recreation Center in Sandy Spring, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Looking for education-minded adults who love to work with young folks in helping them learn about animals and responsibility. Retired people especially welcome!

Our Saturday workdays run from 9-1 and involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water troughs and buckets, checking on animals, doing pasture maintenance, painting fences, and more.  Young people will learn the skills of proper tool usage (and putting them away!), how to interact safely and appropriately with large animals, how to work with many different kinds of people in a team, and more. This is a very welcoming and warm environment.

Future Link students are first-generation to college, low income, ages 18-25 and are working towards a brighter future. Our students are resilient, insightful, and motivated, and though the barriers they face threaten derailment, mentors help students process complex issues, identify solutions, and develop and implement plans so that they may realize their fullest potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused even greater disadvantages to our already marginalized student population, which is why our students need additional support to help navigate challenges as they attend Montgomery College, a vocational training program, work full-time, or choose to re-access their education plan.

Students enter the Future Link program through a 15-week Self-Advocacy and Career Development Seminar, after which they are matched with a mentor.

Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on:

Mentors become the regular point of contact with the student and the Future Link staff. In addition, Future Link provides resources as needed to support the student and mentor. For instance, if the student needs to create a budget or a LinkedIn profile and that is not the mentor's strength, a different volunteer will work with the student in that area.

Mentors attend two training sessions and a one-on-one meeting with staff before meeting their mentee. Continuous support is provided once matched with a mentee. We request an initial one-year commitment with an option to continue beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland and have at least five years’ work experience in their career field.

5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. The piece may be about how you discovered a side of yourself you had not known before these music classes. Relate how you would like to take what you learned into the world to share with others and to serve again. (1 SSL hour after it is published online or in the Newsletter). Help welcome refugee youth to Maryland! Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resume, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. 

The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or higher education. 

Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Volunteers are encouraged to meet youth outside of their homes at coffee shops or in public places.

Time commitment: 10 hours per month for 6 months, although this time commitment is very flexible. If you are interested in using your knowledge of your community to help newcomers to Maryland, please respond!

This opportunity may be virtually only, in person, or hybrid.   

As a Community Bridges (CB) mentor, you will be matched one-on-one with a high school-aged participant in our program for one academic year (September or month of match-June) with the option to extend. Through a closely formed relationship, your time and support can help empower your mentee to be a successful student, an engaged community member, and a confident leader. In return, we hope you gain personal fulfillment as a contributor to the community and the future generation of female leaders. 

In 1997, CB was founded with the vision for an inclusive community where each person is valued and has abundant opportunities to improve themselves and the world around them. The CB Mentor Program continues this quest with the aim for mentors, mentees, staff, and organizational practices to promote accessibility, cultural humility, and more equitable distribution of resources. We acknowledge the historical exclusion of marginalized groups, particularly Women, People of Color, Indigenous people, gender expansive individuals, and people with learning differences. Thus, all members of the Mentor Program are asked to: 

This year, Community Bridges served 464 students in grades 4-12. 96% of our students are first-generation with 44% of families identifying as Hispanic and 42% as Black or African. The most reported languages spoken at home are Spanish, Amharic, and French. Ideal mentors are young professionals and leaders who have experience and are comfortable working within these communities. We are looking for mentors to have critical conversations with their mentees surrounding topics, but not limited to, social injustice, racism, and healthy relationships. We value a diversity of experience, personality, background, and interests.

The IRC in Silver Spring is now recruiting Spring 2025 interns! IRC internships give interns the opportunity to work directly with refugees to support them in accomplishing tasks needed to live successfully in the U.S. We offer 17 unique internships that provide a wide variety of opportunities to gain direct exposure to the refugee resettlement sector.

The IRC was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world providing humanitarian support. In Silver Spring, the IRC works with refugees the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.

·       Anti-Trafficking: The Anti-Trafficking Intern will work in close coordination with the case management teams to serve survivors of human trafficking who are struggling to navigate various systems to access resources and services.

·       Asylee & Humanitarian Parolee Casework: The Asylee & Humanitarian Parolee Casework team is the first point of contact for asylee clients. Caseworkers provide 8 months of case management to asylees. The services include providing monthly cash assistance, ensuring that clients apply for public benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, ensuring that clients apply for social security and enroll in health insurance and ESL classes. 

·       Career Development: The Career Development Program assists employed clients in securing job upgrades to improve economic conditions and align with career history and/or career objectives. The intern will work closely with the Career Development team and Financial Capabilities program to promote client self-sufficiency and encourage clients to work towards long-term career goals.

·       Community Engagement: The aim of community engagement is to establish strong, mutually beneficial connections between the community and the IRC in Silver Spring order to garner monetary, in-kind and volunteer resources for refugee clients. The community engagement intern supports the administration of the family mentor program.  

·       Development: The development team focuses on securing funding for IRC offices; assisting with donor prospecting, research, data collection and grant management activities.

·       Refugee Economic Empowerment: The Economic Empowerment program assists refugees to become economically self-sufficient by placing recently arrived refugees in their first job in the United States.  

·       Refugee Employment and Skill-Building: The Refugee Employment and Skill-Building Program aims to reduce barriers to self-sufficiency and employment and assist refugees to secure full-time employment. 

·       Refugee Employment Coordination: The Employment Coordination Program supports humanitarian immigrants to achieve economic self-sufficiency through engagement in work participation activities including volunteering, internship procurement, vocational English as a second language classes, and referrals to certificate-bearing professional development courses.  

·       Financial Capabilities: The Financial Capabilities program supports clients to become financially capable through financial education, coaching and providing low-interest loan products. Services include financial education and counseling that help clients understand banking, budgeting, saving, debt management, building credit and auto purchase. 

·       Gender Equity: IRC programming assists refugees to become economically self-sufficient and supports acclimatization within the United States by providing access to casework services. This role will support the IRC’s Gender Equality work, cross-cutting programmatically and departmentally to support the administration of equitable services and the proper consideration of gender concerns in programmatic and departmental initiatives. 

·       Immigration Legal Services: The IRC's Immigration Department provides high quality, low-cost immigration services, including filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e. green cards), work authorization, naturalization, family reunification for refugees, asylees, victims of trafficking and other immigrants. 

·       Operations: IRC's Operations Team in Silver Spring, Maryland, supports operations functions and provides related administrative support, resulting in a well-functioning, compliant environment for staff, clients, and partners. This is a challenging position that requires strong organization, creative problem-solving, personal initiative, and the ability to work well in a multicultural and fast -paced environment.

·       Refugee Walk-in Services: The Intake program is the first point of contact to all “walk-in” clients that visit the IRC in Silver Spring. We provide fast track enrollment in public benefits and referrals to internal and/or external resources and programs as needed. 

·       Extended Case Management: The Extended Case Management (ECM) team provides case management services to up to 400 new clients each year. The team works directly with new refugees, asylees, parolees, and other humanitarian immigrants resettling in the DC Metro area, including Haitian, Ukrainian, Latin American, African, and Middle Eastern individuals; utilizing a holistic 2Gen household approach for the families served, the team addresses both short-term and long-term barriers to support overall well-being in the US.

·       Refugee Health and Social Integration: The refugee health and social integration intern will work in close coordination with the case management teams to serve refugees and other vulnerable immigrants who are struggling to navigate various systems to access resources and services.

·       Refugee Resettlement: The Refugee Resettlement team supports refugees during their first eight months in the United States. The housing team prepares apartments for new families. Caseworkers connect refugees with services include providing monthly cash assistance, ensuring that clients apply for public benefits such Medicaid, food stamps, social security and enroll in health insurance and ESL classes. The cultural orientation team introduce refugees to U.S. customs and systems. 

·       Youth Program: The IRC’s Youth Program works to support the integration of school-age recently arrived refugees and asylees. Interns will support the enrolling of new clients in the youth program and completing individual service plans for each individual client. 

All selected interns must undergo and clear a background and reference check in order to intern with the Silver Spring office. We ask that candidates make a $30 donation to help us cover the associated costs. Currently, 87% of our funding goes directly to programming to support our clients, and your help to cover this cost will ensure that no funding is directed away from serving our clients. Instructions will be provided after you have been selected to intern or volunteer. The IRC is not able to sponsor visas.  

The ability to work in-person at least one day per week is required. Internships require a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week. Spring interns are expected to begin their internship by attending an in-person intern orientation on January 27th, 2025, from 9:15AM-3:30PM. The Spring internship terms ends on May 16th, 2025. Please note, the deadline to apply for Spring 2025 internships is January 6, 2025.

Internships with the IRC in Silver Spring are unpaid. Spring 2025 interns may be eligible for per diem reimbursement at the rate of $15/day to offset the costs of food and travel. Serve as a mentor and adult leader with one of our Clubs throughout the county. We have high school groups in Silver Spring, Rockville, and Poolesville. A middle school group in Gaithersburg, serving students from around the county, as well as a high school group for Spanish speaking teens in Gaithersburg. We also serve teen parents and their children in Montgomery County through our YoungLives program that meets in Wheaton and Rockville.

We are a Christian based outreach program that provides a safe place for young people in the community to develop relationships with caring adults from the community who love Jesus and want to see them flourish. We offer one on one opportunities as well as group programming. Every winter we take students to camp for a weekend getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains at Rockbridge Alum Springs, and in the summer we take students to a weeklong camp, either at Rockbridge or Lake Champion in Glen Spey, NY. 

Each Club meets in different rhythms and at various points throughout the week, typically 2-4 times per month in the evenings. We provide training, background checks, and team-based onboarding for all our volunteers.

Join us for an exciting 10 hours of personal development, civic engagement, and leadership development. The Civic Engagement and Leadership Academy is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable knowledges, skills and experience while making a positive impact on your community.

This exciting online program is designed to help high school students develop their leadership skills while learning about civic engagement. The program will include classroom instruction, project-based learning and hands-on experiences that will allow participants to apply the concepts and skills they learn to real-world situations. Our experienced teachers and mentors will guide students through a series of activities and workshops designed to promote personal development, civic engagement, and leadership development. This spring, CSA Flag Football is gearing up for another exciting season, offering kids ages 5 to 14 a chance to develop their skills, learn teamwork, and have fun in a fast-paced, non-contact football environment. Our program is built on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and community, and we’re looking for current and former athletes to help make it a success.

If you’re a current or former athlete who enjoys working with kids, loves sports, or wants to gain leadership experience, this is the perfect opportunity. As a Junior Coach, you’ll play an important role in mentoring young athletes, assisting with practices, and supporting game-day operations—all while earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

Founded in 2010, EduCare Support Services, Inc. is dedicated to empowering vulnerable populations, including seniors, veterans, youth, and families, through innovative programs and services. Our initiatives include:
- Permanent Supportive Housing to prevent homelessness.
- Psychiatric Rehabilitation Programs (PRP) for individuals managing mental health challenges.
- Takoma Park Food Pantry, providing fresh and culturally relevant food to underserved communities.
- Educational Training to help immigrant and refugee women and youth achieve driving independence.
- Community Wellness Initiatives focusing on mental health, resilience, and empowerment.

Dr. Sogie-Thomas is a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) and Certified Anger Management Specialist (CAMS-I). He is committed to mentoring volunteers and interns to develop their skills and achieve their career aspirations.

The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.   

MCPS STEM Volunteers is an organization of STEM professionals promoting STEM learning in Montgomery County Public Schools.

Our  MCPS STEM Volunteers organization recruits STEM professionals interested in volunteering in Montgomery County Public Schools, at levels K-12. Retired volunteers usually commit to one day a week in their school classroom(s) of choice. Non-retired volunteers commit to at least one hour per week in the classroom. Our organization works to connect interested volunteers to MCPS teachers who are seeking STEM volunteers in their classrooms. We attempt to match the volunteer's interest in serving at a particular grade level (K-12) to a requesting school that lies within a reasonable commuting distance. At any one time, we usually have multiple requests for volunteers from teachers in MCPS grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. 

Volunteers work directly with teachers and students in many different ways to promote students' knowledge and love of science, and to demonstrate how science is important in the lives of everyone in our society.

Volunteers are invited to knit, sew or crochet at home to make blankets as gifts for hospitalized children. Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Meetings are held in the lower level of the University of Maryland extension office, Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park, 18410 Muncaster Road, Derwood. Our next meeting is Tuesday 30 September 2025, drop in between 10am and 3pm.

(1) Music Videos for hospitals. The Tacy Foundation receives video recordings from volunteers for hospitals and seniors in the metropolitan area of Washington/Baltimore/Wilmington/Philadelphia/New York City, the Northeast corridor. The YouTube playlists are also sent nationwide to Fisher Houses and hospitals wherever requested.  Children are invited to participate in the recording and distribution for these musical gifts. The Foundation is dedicated to sending sounds of hope and healing through music.  1 hour of SSL Credit per video.  Songs must be at least late elementary/intermediate level and range from 3 to 10 minutes in length.). Public Domain status or written permission from the publisher are required.

This is an ongoing project.  Contact The Tacy Foundation for opportunities. Videos are uploaded on the Foundation's YouTube Playlist. Each year over 300 videos are placed on a new playlist for the purpose of sending hope and healing into the communities. Thanks to technology, the music videos are placed on QR code Cards with contact information for the recipients.  This makes for easy shipping along with handmade greeting cards from volunteers. 

(2) The Tacy Foundation sponsors live music performances at NIH Clinical Research Center's Hall of Hope & Seniors Centers, and acts as liaison for American Red Cross Teen Pianists at Walter Reed-Bethesda Lobby of the America Building.   (2.0 hours of ssl credit per concert.)

(3) The Tacy Foundation sponsors Piano Pals, an internship program for teen pianists to mentor elementary school children who cannot afford music lessons at some elementary public schools' aftercare programs in Montgomery County, MD.  (1.5 hours  of SSL credit per session)

(4) The Reading Express brings a story to life through children's books. Volunteers are needed to supervise craft tables at the library and help with cleanup following the event. Playing an instrument is required for recording music and participation in live concerts. Playing an instrument, organizing lesson material and communicating with children, a congenial outgoing personality, compassion for younger children, and dependability are required for the internship/mentor in the Piano Pals Program.  (1 hour of SSL Credit per book)

Schools: For Grades 3-5. This online class serves as preparation for mentoring when schools open and children will attend the afterschool program. Should schools be closed to afterschool activities, these classes will resume until schools open.

6. This is a free, 5-hour interactive course that puts the participant in the role of a provider in a post-disaster scene. This course is for individuals new to disaster response who want to learn the core goals of PFA, as well as for seasoned practitioners who want a review. It features innovative activities, video demonstrations, and mentor tips from the nation’s trauma experts and survivors. PFA online also offers a Learning Community where participants can share about experiences using PFA in the field, receive guidance during times of disaster, and obtain additional resources and training.

The course can be completed in small blocks of time or as time permits.

Upon completion of the course and passing the exam, participants are provided with a certificate of completion of the PFA Course that they must email to pandreasonmd@gmail.com to receive 5 SSL hours.

A completed and signed SSL certificate (form 560-61) will be provided via email after receipt of the PFA Certificate of completion. 

The Course is supported by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is widely recognized by the disaster response community.

Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of adults with autism? Madison Fields is seeking dedicated volunteers to support our Job Readiness Program, helping individuals prepare for meaningful employment opportunities.

As a volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, you will be involved in the following key tasks:

Providing Guidance and Support: As a mentor, you will offer guidance and encouragement to our participants, helping them build confidence in their tasks and abilities.

Skill Development: You will assist participants with job-related skills around our main barn, chickens, and soapery. 

Hands-On Training: Volunteers help create simulated work environments where participants can practice their skills. This hands-on approach is crucial for their learning and development. Personalized Mentorship: Building a one-on-one relationship with participants to understand their individual needs and goals, providing tailored support and advice.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, and around the horses. We offer comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your mentoring role. Additionally, working closely with our participants and other volunteers is a unique and enriching experience that fosters personal growth and community development.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers that would like to be Cat Adoption Coordinators!  We are a foster-based rescue in the VA, MD, DC area that pulls kittens and cats from high kill shelters across the rural south and places them in foster care to get adopted!  We need volunteers willing to train to become Dog and Cat Adoption Coordinators and help us get these wonderful animals adopted!

About the Adoption Coordinator (AC) role:

What is it?

Adoption Coordinators are the main advocates for our dogs and cats!  They not only work to match our animals with potential adopters, but they also serve as a critical resource to our foster parents. ACs choose the animals they want to be responsible for, ensure they are properly posted online, and discuss them with interest adopters. ACs review ALL applications that come in for those animals -- and if they are not previously pre-approved, ensure that we complete a vet check and landlord check (if applicable), conduct a phone screen, and, when needed, find a home visit volunteer.

Adoption Coordinators are one of our most important groups of volunteers.  Typically, ACs dedicate anywhere from 5-15 hours a week to Lucky Dog. Having regular access to email is super important!

Adoption Coordinators are also required to attend at least 2 adoption events per month and 1 transport per month. This is a great opportunity to meet your dogs and cats and chat with their fosters!

Training Needed?

All Adoption Coordinators go through a virtual AC training and shadow at one of our Sunday adoption events. Once they have completed that, they will go through a mentoring phase before they work on their own.

Asian American LEAD supports low-income & underserved youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs. SHIP trains and certifies a corps of volunteer Medicare counselor experts who usually participate in the program two-four hours weekly. 

Volunteers begin with small group trainings, one-on-one mentoring, attending presentations, reading materials, and participating in on-line trainings while joining experienced counselors to learn how to answer Medicare questions.

Additionally, monthly large-group trainings include Medicare expert speakers events and case study scenario discussions.  National partner organizations such as the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), also offer webinars to help all SHIP counselors learn about specific topics or changes to Medicare.  

Through a national certification program, volunteers may become nationally certified at no-cost.

The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Piano Pals® for Seniors-   Private mentoring for a senior living in an assisted living facility.  

The High School student schedules a piano lesson on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with an interested senior.  The lessons begin anywhere from the beginner level to the level where the senior is.  If a beginner, the teen uses Piano for Adult Beginners provided by Faber Piano Adventures.   If the senior student has played, the teen brings materials that are meaningful to the senior.  

Piano lessons are great platforms for seniors to connect with a youth.  Present and past are conjoined through the music that is studied and the conversation that inevitably unfolds.  A relationship is forged through the attention of a teen who is knowledgeable in music and eager to learn from the senior about history, family, culture, and the aging brain. The senior has time.  

These sessions will be under supervision of an adult volunteer on the premises.  Scheduled by the Activity Director of the assisted living facility.

1 hour ssl credit for mentors per class.   SSL Hours are logged and approved by the Assisted Living staff at the facility if you are under the staff's supervision there.  If Tacy Foundation staff are present at all times and only when TF staff are onsite, you may log your hours with the foundation.

Adult leaders serve as mentors and instructors to our youth members. They provide guidance and direction for youth members as needed.

Adult leaders are trained in at least BLS Healthcare Provider CPR and Standard First Aid, and are encouraged to complete Emergency Medical Responder training. Operational Advisors participate on standby first aid coverage at community and private events. Events covered include company picnics, parades, marathons in Montgomery County, and events on the National Mall, the Tidal Basin and the White House in Washington, DC. Leaders are encouraged to attend one event, one meeting and one training session per month, and at least 6 standby events as a minimum activity level. There are no minimum requirements, and no previous experience or current certification/license is necessary, training is available. Those who have previous or current training in EMS (EMTs, Paramedics, nurses, etc.) are encouraged to participate!

We can also use Administrative Advisors, who help with the many administrative needs for keeping the Unit running.

We are looking for experts in business and management to take up a role of the judges during our Business Pitch Celebration held at the end of our entrepreneurial programs. At the end of the program, EWI students showcase what they have learned during the program and graduate by presenting their business plans and pitching their businesses. Judges play an essential role in the process, through evaluating the pitches, providing valuable feedback on the business plans, and supporting young entrepreneurs on their journey of leading a successful business.

Future Stars Sports is seeking volunteer coaches for its male and female youth basketball teams. We are in need of volunteers looking to contribute their time, resources an expertise to teaching the fundamental of youth basketball.

Bernadette's Blossoms Online Mentoring Program helps to empower youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. The mentoring program uses adult volunteers to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young person for a period of at least one year. By becoming part of the social network of adults and community members who care about the youth, the mentor can help youth develop and reach positive academic, career, and personal goals.

The front desk SSL hr student will check in other students that participate in classes. One of the duties will be checking temperatures when students first come inside, to make sure students don’t have a temperature over 101 degrees (fever level). That is to prevent sickly students from potentially spreading potentially COVID-19. Other duties will be to help keep the gym clean (I.e.-cleaning bathroom, wiping heavy bags down, etc.), answering phone calls, greeting guest pleasantly, and much more. We have special events during each semester, and will need help setting up event, taking pictures and video (to put on social media and other promotions), and so much more. We will also help students learn how to teach boxing skills, so that they can learn how to become assistant instructors too. This is a great chance to meet some wonderful people, and enjoy learning more life skills and experiences. Students will enjoy being apart of a team that cares for them. They will learn how to work in an entrepreneurial environment, help give back to the community, and also develop leadership skills through their interactions. 

To give a breakdown of each role is as follows:

•Greeters

Greeters will be the first point of in-person contact when guest first come in. They will pleasantly greet guest by opening up the front door for parents, students, and others that would like to enter (or visit) the gym. They will greet guest with a positive attitude, introduce themselves, and usher students (and guest) to the front desk staff, to get checked in. 

•Front desk position 

Front desk SSL hr students will check temperatures of incoming students for class, answer any questions about program by visiting guest, answer and return phone calls, etc. 

•Assistant Instructors 

Assistant Instructors will hep give one-on-one guidance to students as they do exercises during warmups, and other exercises during the duration of classes. They will be taught how to be encouraging, learn first aid skills, and help with general support and mentoring.

Students will need to wear mask at all times inside building, and will help set the standard of an above excellent experience. Students will need to bring their own mask to protect themselves (and others) from a potential spread of COVID-19. Hand sanitizers are provided, and students will be advised on how to engage with others, without putting themselves too at risk to spread COVID-19.

Thousands of families and unaccompanied children have come to Maryland seeking safety and refuge from violence in their home counties. With the help of volunteer attorneys, these immigrants gain access to critical legal assistance with their valid claims to remain in the United States. Without representation, many who are eligible for relief will likely be deported right back to the dangerous situations from which they escaped.

The Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project is looking for volunteer attorneys and mentors barred in any state to offer brief advice during our legal clinics or to represent these vulnerable immigrants before the Maryland family court and/or Baltimore Immigration Court. Volunteers have access to substantive training, malpractice insurance, mentorship, case support, interpreters, an email discussion listserv, and sample pleadings and forms. Questions? Site supervisors supervise a regular Tacy Foundation event at a hospital, senior center, or school. This opportunity is open to responsible adults with strong organizational and communication skills. This volunteer opportunity is on-site with an average time commitment is 4 hours per week. Training is provided. Great opportunity for parents, grandparents, or other relatives of children or teens who play a musical instrument.

Mentors are at the heart and soul of what we do at the Academy. Mentors come once a week to work with Scholar-Athletes in various games and activities designed to help Scholar-Athletes learn and grow into determined students, supportive teammates and catalysts for positive change in our community. Our mentors work to cultivate a positive relationship with mentees that have a lasting impact for years to come.

Students are ages 10-18 and attend the JLG-RICA Residential program. All volunteers must be 21 and over also must be willing to spend time with students and must remember to have patience. Volunteer must also be comfortable with establishing personal boundaries with a student. Volunteer will meet with the student a minimum of one hour per week Tues-Thurs between the hours of 4:00-5:00 pm

JCA Senior Community Service Employment Program needs volunteers to help with one-on-one and small group job skill development. The JCA Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) provides on-the-job training for people with low income age 55 and older who live in Montgomery and Frederick counties, Maryland. Trainees receive minimum wage while working at charities and government agencies to build their skills and resumes while delivering valuable community service. SCSEP is operated under a U.S. Department of Labor grant and in cooperation with Senior Service America, Inc. The SCSEP program is an equal opportunity program.

RefAmerica UPDATE for Summer 2020 (virtual) and 2021 (in-person):   Hope you all are healthy and staying safe.  Yes, RefAmerica is still looking for local American high school students who want to help promote a warm American welcome for refugees in the United States.  As we will be unable to bring resettled refugee teens to Washington D.C. this summer for the RefAmerica leadership program, we plan to have a certain number of virtual sessions with a RefAmerica group of teen refugees and volunteers in July 2020 to allow participants to begin their cross-cultural experience, to begin to bond, to begin to develop story-telling and public speaking skills, and to receive some mentoring in anticipation of their in-person program in Washington next summer (2021).  If you are a graduating senior, rising senior, or a rising junior, your virtual participation in this program in July 2020 could help lessen the feelings of isolation and frustration experienced by relatively recently arrived refugee teens as they attempt to operate and adapt in a new language and a foreign country during a pandemic lockdown and its aftermath.  Support and insights from American peers will be invaluable to them as they try to get know their new home country and its inhabitants under very trying conditions, and volunteers will gain much from refugee insights as well.

We are accepting applications through mid-June and will interview RefAmerica applicants (by phone).  (If you are interested in helping welcome refugee peers, we would suggest that this is an ideal time to focus on the RefAmerica application when you are necessarily at home and practicing social distancing.)  Those accepted into the program can rest assured that so long as they qualify this year, they will have the opportunity to participate with their refugee contemporaries in the in-person program in Washington next year (health conditions permitting), and we will look to our volunteer teen participants this July to provide much-needed moral support to these refugee peers by participating in a few virtual sessions.   

 RefAmerica’s one-month, Washington-based, in-person program scheduled to be held next in 2021 will, as in previous years, will be held in July for  six – ten recently resettled refugee high school students drawn from around the U.S. and six - ten comparably aged American teens from Montgomery County, MD, and surrounding areas.

RefAmerica is a program in leadership, public-speaking, cross-cultural understanding, and the narrative method.  Participants have the opportunity to get to know Washington DC; to learn more about American immigrant stories; to engage in a unique cross-cultural program of sharing traditions, team-building experiences and personal stories; to explore their own roles within a greater American story of immigration and integration; to meet with government and legislative officials, refugee program professionals, and others; and to plan ways to welcome refugees and promote cross-cultural understanding in their home communities.  The goal of RefAmerica is to promote full inclusion of recently arrived refugees in America and provide small groups of participant refugees with the tools both to tell their stories and to help forge for themselves, their families and their fellow refugees, like generations of Americans before them, a new American story.  Volunteer participants in the  July 2021 in-person program are eligible for SSL.

Participation in the summer program is competitive and requires an application, short bio, and resume.  For this volunteer opportunity, we are looking for friendly, outgoing, supportive students with a commitment to and record of community service.  In 2021 (and virtually in 2020), local volunteer participants will join with refugee participants in a wide array of cross-cultural exchange, team-building, and community service activities; build public speaking and leadership skills; and advocate for refugees.  They will offer their refugee contemporaries friendship, welcome, and an introduction to teen life in their new home country.  In 2021, program participants must make a full four-week commitment (including weekends).  In 2020, virtual participation will be 5-8 partial days throughout July (schedule and timing collectively TBD).

We're looking for individuals who have experience and expertise in various college courses to serve as virtual tutors for our Scholars. Generation Hope Scholars are teen parents that are pursuing a college education to make a better life for themselves and their child.  

Time Commitment:  As needed, typically once a week for about an hour. You will be contacted by our Tutoring Coordinator when your help is needed.

GENERATION HOPE VOLUNTEER FORM

About Generation Hope: Generation Hope is the only community-based nonprofit organization in the DMV region focused on college completion and early childhood success for two populations that are dismissed regarding their potential and dreams for the future: teen parents and their children. Founded in 2010, Generation Hope selects teen mothers and teen fathers who have displayed academic achievement and a desire to go to college to become Scholars in the Generation Hope Scholar Program.  Once accepted, Generation Hope provides each Scholar with three supports that we believe increase the likelihood that they will obtain their college degree; up to $2,400 per year in tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring, and case management. Additionally, Scholars receive an increased network of support from the extended family that the program provides to them and to their young children. This support stays with Scholars until they earn their two or four-year degree. Our tutors are a critical piece of this support, as they help make it possible for our Scholars to thrive in higher education.

The Washington Ice Dogs provides a team ice hockey experience to individuals with developmental disabilitles.  Volunteers will provide on-ice coaching support to players in small groups or 1:1 at weekly practices.

1) Volunteer Veteran for Veterans Day : Every year during November we celebrate Veterans Day at multiple locations in Maryland and Virginia.  SAMFSN honors veterans and first responders every year with prayers in multiple prayer locations in MD and VA. Please send an email support@samfsn.org if you want to help out as a Veteran volunteer. We invite Veterans and Active duty personnel who can speak to young kids and answer their questions about serving in the military Some veterans bring model air planes  and other job aids to show the kids what they can do as part of their daily work in the ARMY, NAVY or Air Force. This community service will be provided at location in MD and VA locations

Age: 18 yrs and above and must travel to event sites on their own

2) CFC ( Combined Federal Campaign): SAMFSN is a CFC member. Our CFC ID is 86806. We support CFC events from September to December in multiple locations in DC, MD and VA. We need help to host these events. Locations are usually in federal offices in the DC area. Most events will take a half day. Volunteers will need to register with us and come on their own to the CFC locations. This community service will be provided at MD, DC and VA locations

3) Outreach to Veterans: Volunteers with outreach skills who can help us contact Veterans, conduct and host events in army base locations and provide civilian support to veterans. Any past experience with Veteran issues will be an advantage. SAMFSN has developed very effective USAJobs training. We need help to reach out to veterans and provide this online training. This is remote online work.

We also need volunteers with analysis skills who can help define processes and procedures for a non-profit. Volunteers with good writing, editing and online research skills. Remote work is possible. Part time/weekend work is also possible. This community service is provided onsite and remotely

1) Wreaths For America: (Approx around Dec 15th) SAMFSN participates in this event every year. Since 2015 we have been participating at the Baltimore National Cemetery rather than at Arlington Cemetery. We invite families to lay wreaths and flowers on grave stones of fallen soldiers. Since we always don't have seem to have enough wreaths we request families to bring roses to lay at the grave stones once the wreaths run out so that we can cover as many grave stones as we can. If you are a college student or 20-something who wants to help promote a warm American welcome for refugees in the United States, you may be interested in volunteering as a RefAmerica counselor, management team member and near-peer mentor.  In summer 2020,  RefAmerica will again be running its one-month (June 26 – July 26) summer program for:  six - ten recently resettled refugee high school students drawn from around the U.S. and six - ten comparably aged American high school students from Montgomery County, MD, and surrounding areas.

RefAmerica is a program in leadership, public-speaking, cross-cultural understanding, and the narrative method.  Participants have the opportunity to get to know Washington DC; to learn more about American immigrant stories; to engage in a unique cross-cultural program of sharing traditions, team-building experiences, and personal stories; to explore their own roles within a greater American story of immigration and integration; and to plan ways to welcome refugees and promote cross-cultural understanding in their home communities.  Participants visit key Washington sites and share their stories at speaking events, in meetings with government, think tank, and international organization representatives, and on Capitol Hill.  The goal of RefAmerica is to promote full inclusion of recently arrived refugees in America and provide small groups of participant refugees with the tools both to tell their stories and to help forge for themselves, their families and their fellow refugees, like generations of Americans before them, a new American story.  We rely also on the power of personal narrative to help foster a warm American welcome for refugees.

A RefAmerica counselor/management team member would help chaperone and coordinate team activities; communicate and coordinate with venues, host parents, event guests, donors, and participants; help with speech prep, participate in team activities; help with event set-up and fund-raising; serve as a near-peer mentor,and more.   We are looking for someone who can volunteer part-time in June and August and full-time in July. We are particularly interested in considering outgoing, responsible and reliable individuals with volunteer, counseling, and cross-cultural experience and with strong people skills and compassion.  We are happy to assume the supervision and reporting responsibilities for a college internship.

Our Journey Through is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization looking for a Grant Writer for grant proposals.

Our mission is to mentor and teach single parents seeking a pathway to success and an affordable safe-haven from which they can grow and reach self-sufficient.

A little about Lead4Life, Inc.:  

 Lead4Life, Inc. (L4L) was founded in 2008 in an effort to reduce the number of youth entering the juvenile justice system, the number of out-of-home placements, and the youth recidivism rate. L4L’s programs are developed utilizing restorative practices, strength-based and Positive Youth Development models. These programs help youth and families address negative behaviors that all too often result in involvement with our criminal justice system. 

L4L staff, mentors, and volunteers work together to empower individuals to develop positive life, social and competency skills, enabling them to become productive community members. Services such as alternative to detention programs, diversion, and grassroots mentoring are provided both in the community and in youth detention facilities. 

How Can You Help? 

HOST A HOLIDAY SUPPLY DRIVE: 

Schedule a single day event for your organization to collect hygiene items and they can be dropped off at the Lead4Life office or our staff will come and pick them up. We also welcome monetary donations to help us purchase supplies as well.

Widow Care's Mission

Widow Care’s mission is to provide targeted and accessible content & connections to DC,
Maryland and Virginia residents facing the loss of a spouse, so they can become empowered in their walk through grief and new challenges. We do so by providing peer support groups, social meet-ups, mentorship & education to help members regain stability after tragedy.

There are 680,204 widowed men and women living in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Furthermore, 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 are widowed. While widowhood is so incredibly widespread, few resources exist to aid surviving spouses in their transition into widowhood.

Widowed persons are at an increased risk of depression, social isolation and serious health problems, and we aim to combat this by creating a strong and supportive network comprised of understanding individuals. We encourage members to attend entertaining and enjoyable events, while also encouraging them to find a support system which allows them to speak about their challenges. Our educational programs & local service connections aim to make the transition into widowhood easier by offering pertinent services & education.

Our founders’ vision for the organization involves widow(er)s helping other widow(er)s. We walk with our members throughout their healing process by offering specialized care & support, and we enable them to "give back" by donating their time or funds to help other widowed persons in the community. We strive to work with other nonprofits, support groups & organizations in our area to ensure ample support.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

What is a Council Member?

Our Advisory Council includes a collection of individuals who bring unique knowledge and skills which augment the knowledge and skills of the formal Board of Directors in order to more effectively guide the organization. The Advisory Council does not have formal authority to govern the organization. Rather, the members serves to make recommendations and/or provide key information and materials to the Board of Directors.

Members of the Council may evaluate the performance of a program, serve as an advocate for the organization to the community, gather input from and serve as a liaison for relevant
constituencies, provide feedback to the organization from the community, provide technical
expertise, provide independent/unbiased sounding feedback, and assist staff in determining important activities.

The possible responsibilities of an advisory council include determining mission and purpose of a program, articulating the goals, means, and primary constituents to be served by a program, ensuring effective planning, monitoring and strengthening of programs and services, ensuring adequate financial resources, and enhancing the organization’s public standing.

Expectations

The council members are expected to participate in the 2 annual in-person Council meetings. The upcoming meeting dates are Saturday, September 21st, 2019 and Saturday, March 7th, 2020. Both meetings will last ~4 hours, taking place from 8:30am-12pm.

In addition to these meetings, Council members are welcomed & encouraged to take-on additional leadership roles by assisting the organization with tasks such as organizing attendees at events, peer-to-peer fundraising, sponsorship outreach or other tasks that are applicable and appropriate for the individualized skillset of that particular member.

The term limit for a council member is 1 year, with the chance to renew the position at the end of their tenure. Council members are required to give a 60-day notice if they will not be renewing their position at the end of their tenure. The term limit for the Chair and Vice Chair of the Council is 2 years.

Chairs and Vice Chairs are required to give a 90-day notice if they will not be renewing their position at the end of their tenure. Widow Care reserves the right to remove any Council member, Chair or Vice Chair at any time, for any reason, if we see fit.

Through TASSC’s Professional Mentor Program, we pair Survivors with local professionals living in the DMV who want to help survivors set career goals, navigate the US job market, network, and get back into their professional fields. We are currently seeking compassionate, creative professional volunteer mentors who can be part of a 3 month professional mentorship with a TASSC mentee. We are seeking individuals who either work in, or have strong connections or knowledge in a variety of professions. We are also open to professionals who would like to offer broader professional mentorship.

Many live in foster or other out-of-home care; most are monitored by Child Welfare because of neglect, abuse or other challenges in the home. Our approach to mentoring guarantees these boys and young men that they are not alone in dealing with life's day-to-day challenges and engages them in activities that encourage social, and emotional growth.

With just 4 - 8 hours per month, you can change the odds and make a difference in a young man's life. Volunteer mentors are required to participate in face-to-face informational and training sessions and online training.
