Searching for a skilled facilitator to design and lead a thoughtful, inclusive strategic planning process that gathers diverse stakeholder perspectives and helps the organization articulate clear, actionable strategic priorities and recommended next steps. Specific session design, timeline, and materials will be discussed with volunteers.

This project will help refine priorities that strengthen intergenerational programs in school readiness, workforce development, and community empowerment. Volunteers will help chart a path that reduces isolation and expands meaningful connections between children, older adults, and families.

Details will be provided during volunteer interviews. We will collaborate closely with the facilitator, share organizational context and program information, and coordinate stakeholder participation so the resulting priorities can be adopted and advanced in our next phase of growth. We have a previous strategic plan with which we are using for a jumping off point. Volunteers will work closely with the Board President and Executive Director.

Help sew comfortable pillowcases for cancer patients of all ages. Our goal is to bring comfort and brightness to hospital rooms and treatment spaces—and as Madam Sew puts it, help "reduce the fear and stress associated with a hospital stay and [remind recipients] they are not defined by their illness."

Founded by a three-time cancer survivor, Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time.

Help us gather supplies needed to help patients through their cancer treatments. As with our other opportunities, the items contributed will be included in our cancer care kits that are delivered nationwide to those undergoing cancer treatments.

Bilingual, Spanish/English volunteer needed to assist clinical and administrative team of Mansfield Kaseman Health Clinic. Help guide patients through the care process, and provide administrative support as needed. 

Support eligibility process: 

1. Help patients complete application forms for enrollment and collect required supporting documents. 

2. Review patient eligibility to attend the clinic, ensuring all necessary information is up-to-date and accurate.  

Assist with calling to schedule patients for appointments and to reschedule missed appointments.

Decorate beautiful journals that recipients can use as appointment planners, symptom trackers, or simply coloring books. The covers and a few pages inside could be spaces for volunteers to draw outlines or artwork, write inspiring messages, etc.

For those seeking service hours: As of August 11, 2023, we ONLY accept store-bought journals that you decorate yourself for service hours, but not composition notebooks. The outside covers should be decorated with hand-drawn art and/or handwritten inspiring quotes. Using only stickers or decorative tape is not acceptable for service hours. At least one of the inside pages should also be decorated with calendars, activity or coloring pages, handwritten inspiring messages, etc.

Undecorated store-bought journals are always welcome but are not eligible for service hours. Handmade journals may be accepted only if pre-approved and exceptionally well-made.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC. 

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training:

As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

Germantown HELP provides delivered emergency food to residents of Germantown. We are addressing the increasing need resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and are looking for more donations of food and funds to help our neighbors in need.

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

How to Sign-Up to Bake Cakes

You must SIGN-UP for our Newsletter in order to receive the Google Form to sign-up to bake cakes. To subscribe, go to https://www.bc4f.org/newsletter. DO NOT USE an MCPS email address as all external emails are blocked. Once a month, you will receive information about delivery dates, delivery address, and delivery times. Currently, we accept cake donations on one Sunday a month. Our current delivery location is in Rockville near Farmland Elementary School. The Google Form is included in the monthly Newsletter so that you can sign-up with the number of cakes you would like to donate. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CAKES DONATED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE MORE VOLUNTEERS. The SSL form is provided at the time/date of cake delivery as long as the cake(s) meet donation requirements. SSL hours are awarded as follows:

Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas.  We have various types of volunteer opportunities available but are specifically looking for volunteers who can help answer questions about technology.

Volunteer service providers must be over 18. Some services take place in the home, like connecting a new computer or troubleshooting a cable connection. Other questions might be able to be answered over the phone.  We are looking for volunteers with an interest in basic troubleshooting for home computers, printers, networking, and smartphones.  Complicated or time consuming questions are referred to paid providers.

Candidates must be personable and patient and feel that they have a good rapport with seniors.

Volunteers fill out an application and go through a background check and a short training.  You choose which service requests you would like to accept - there is no requirement to take any minimum number of requests and you do what is convenient for you. Most requests are for weekdays but there is great flexibility in dates.

Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas. You volunteer on your schedule!

Volunteers can choose to help as a driver (driving seniors to or from doctor's appointments, etc), a notetaker during medical appointments, absent owner services (such as watering plants or picking up packages) or to do light home repair tasks (such as lifting boxes, changing tall lightbulbs, etc), or provide limited technical assistance for computers and other devices. 

Our most-requested service is rides to doctor appointments during weekdays.These rides are crucial for our members and provide a way to get to know the member during conversation on the ride.

Volunteer service providers can be any age (over 18), and do not have to be seniors themselves. Although many volunteers are also members.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

You are welcome to participate as often as you’d like — monthly attendance is encouraged but not required.

Why It Matters

During rainstorms, discarded trash and recycling wash into storm drains and flow into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By removing litter from our neighborhood, we help prevent pollution and protect our waterways — even our drinking water. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community and environment.

The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22.

SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

Help us make our new families feel at home!

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say, "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

The People's Community Baptist church offers various opportunities to earn SSL hours.  We serve as a food distribution site on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to sort, bag, and hand out the food via a drive-through process.

On the 4th Saturdays (7:30am-9:30am), we serve as a host site for the SHARE (Self Help and Resource Program) food distribution program where volunteers are needed to help package bulk food for distribution.

Quarterly, (on Saturdays), we collect, sort, and distribute gently used clothes to the community.

On the first and third Wednesdays, we host a program/lunch for seniors and retirees (11am to 1pm).  Volunteers can assist in the room set set-up and break down of tables and chairs; and assist with serving lunch and clean up, and/or where needed.

We need volunteers to assist teachers with our weekly Sunday School classes (9am-10am), and with the set of technology equipment, etec.  We use volunteers to assist our media team

We also offer special events and programs that requires volunteers who need opportunities to earn SSL hours. Some of those events include our Annual Easter Egg Hunt; Annual Church Picnic; Annual Hallelujah Party; Annual Vacation Bible School. Students can assist in making decorations, decorating classrooms and hallways; assistance with indoor and out door games; playground

Camp Counselors are required to volunteer for at least one week-long camp totaling 40 hours per session (20 hours for half-day preschool camps). Camps run Monday through Friday. All applicants must attend a Camp Counselor Training on Saturday, June 13 from 10am to 2pm at Locust Grove Nature Center. Camp Counselors must be comfortable working outside for the majority of their shift in variable conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and mud. Camp activities make use of our various outdoor areas including the nature play space, the creek, campfire rings, outdoor classrooms, and our natural surface trails. All volunteers are expected to show up for their shift on time, be fully engaged with their group, report incidents or safety concerns to staff immediately, and proactively work to create a positive camp atmosphere for all. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and submit to a background check.

Thank you for volunteering with the UpCounty Hub! 

The UpCounty Hub provides fresh produce, shelf stable foods, hygiene items, and some social services for the families that we serve in our community. 

Drivers are needed on Thursdays to deliver food packages to the doorstep of vulnerable Upcounty families, that are not able to drive to one of our weekly distribution sites. Drivers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs.  Addresses of clients will be provided upon arrival at the Hub on delivery day. You will be delivering food directly to clients. 

Please arrive at the UpCounty Hub between 10:45am-11:00am on Thursday and pull around to the right side of the building to the loading dock. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN HANDICAP SPOTS!  If possible please try to register for this shift by the Tuesday before so we can assign boxes to the correct number of cars.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to children with special needs and is looking for middle and high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the soccer field.  The program is run by a trained coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock View Elementary in Kensington runs from 3:30 - 4:30pm every Tuesday afternoon for a 7 week period beginning on April 7.  We'll finish the season on May 19th.  We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire 7 week session.

Choose reading, writing, and/or math. Assist with homework and other fun activities. Two days/week preferred. Grades: K-5.

Description:

Grace Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing toiletry kits and feminine hygiene products to homeless women and children in Montgomery County and beyond. We are offering an impactful volunteer opportunity for MCPS students to earn SSL hours while advocating for those in need.

Volunteers will participate in a writing campaign to raise awareness and request support from local legislators, businesses, and manufacturers. Students will draft emails to local congresspersons, stores, vendors, and manufacturers, urging them to support Grace Helping Hands by donating products or funding.

Volunteers will design digital encouragement cards to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These digital cards will be shared with hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help spread positivity and reduce feelings of isolation. Each completed card counts as .5 SSL hours. Due to the overwhelming number of submissions, each person may only make up to 10 cards per month. 

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22. SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

Instructions: Create a digital card that includes a colorful illustration/design and a short encouraging message. Good themes include nature scenes, animals, flowers, characters, positive quotes, etc. Some examples of a short positive message are a positive thought, a message about kindness, something that might make someone smile, etc. Do not include references to illness or hospitals, phrases like get well soon, politics or religion, and personal contact information. Cards can be created through Canva, Photoshop, or any digital drawing software. They should be colorful, appropriate and high resolution. AI-generated artwork, copied images, and low-quality designs will not receive SSL hours. 

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself.

Bethesda Help Needs Drivers

Our Drivers deliver a supply of food to clients within our service area.  The time commitment is 2 days a month, with actual delivery time usually taking only 2-3 hours. Drivers pick up pre-packaged food bags from our pantry on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda and make all deliveries curbside.

Drivers must have a cellphone, a vehicle, be a licensed driver, carry vehicle insurance, have access to a computer, and be computer literate. Training is provided.

The Children-Based volunteer provides students with a hands-on opportunity to support children in a fun, structured ABA environment. Interns assist with group activities, social skills programming, and community-based learning while working closely with experienced BCBAs and RBTs. This volunteer position is ideal for students seeking to complete practicum hours while gaining real-world experience in behavioral health.

We are seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators for bereavement groups! CaringMatters provides adult support groups that allow participants to meet others who are also grieving, share their stories, and learn from one another. Specialized groups include adult child loss, parent loss, sibling or friend loss, spousal loss, and suicide loss. Additional groups are formed based on community need.

All volunteers must go through our general three-day volunteer training and then a shorter additional adult bereavement training. Volunteers must also complete a background check.   

After completing both trainings, they are assigned in two-person teams to co-facilitate 1½-hours-long meetings. The frequency of meetings varies. Some groups meet during the day, but most meet on weeknights from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Currently, most of the adult support groups are meeting online via Zoom.

Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Vegetable Soup with Pesto led by an experienced student KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, May 3rd from 5pm-6pm.

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours.

Our approach to mentoring guarantees these boys and young men that they are not alone in dealing with life's day-to-day challenges and engages them in activities that encourage social, and emotional growth.

With just 4 - 8 hours per month, you can change the odds and make a difference in a young man's life. Volunteer mentors are required to participate in face-to-face informational and training sessions and online training. Once matched with a mentee, volunteer mentors are encouraged to participate in periodic trainings and program activities.

With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can support boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities. Volunteer mentors are required to attend informational and training sessions. Once matched with a mentee, mentors are encouraged to attend continuing education workshops and program events. Mosaic is an annual language arts program for middle school students to showcase their creative talents and express their cultural identities. The program is held in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL). Entries are in the category of essay, short story, or poem (including a spoken word or written version of a rap) and allow students to creatively express their personal reflections on diversity and culture.

There are writing workshops where registrants will receive hands-on instruction on the writing process, strategy for adding focus to your writing, engage in writing prompts, read like a writer, and more!

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) organizes fun events for residents to relax and get to know each other.

On Thursday, March 19, 6-7pm, we're hosting a ceramics painting event for all ages at Allium Place in Silver Spring.

The Interfaith Works Women's Center at Crabbs Branch provides short-term, emergency shelter services to adult women. In addition to temporary shelter, the IW Women's Center also provides case management services to each client. These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 50 clients at the IW Women's Center, located at 16911 Crabbs Branch Way, Derwood, MD 20855. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. Breakfast is drop off only. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours.

If you're dropping off meals, please label the containers with the ingredients so our clients with dietary restrictions can be aware. When you arrive, you can either call our front staff at 301-978-7041 or come into the lobby to deliver your donations. There will also be a cart outside available for you to use, if needed.

We’re looking for a detail-oriented and community-minded Historical Artifact Organizer to assist with preparing, displaying, and monitoring artifacts and historical materials during the event. This role helps ensure the history of Prathertown is shared safely and meaningfully with all attendees.

Assist with setting up and respectfully arranging exhibit space.

Take before and after pictures of exhibit space.

Help monitor artifact tables and ensure items remain organized and protected.

Place signage in windows and tables.

Appropriately place acrylic signs at each historic category.

Cover tables with tablecloths.

What is a Teen Advisory Board (TAB)? TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. The Teen Advisory Board will provide feedback on programs, assist librarians with planning and running events and will be library advocates. TAB volunteers have monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month, and other volunteer opportunities throughout the month. Feel free to drop in to check it out!

Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Spring! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start April 13th and run through June 26th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by March 27th to receive a placement or waitlist information on April 1st.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. At WEC, we value the multilingual skills student-volunteers bring to our classrooms!

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 37 clients at the IW Women's Center, located at 2 Taft Ct, Suite 100, Rockville MD, 20850. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Help keep Rockville streams free of trash and participate in the Annual Potomac River Stream Cleanup at Maryvale Park with the Rockville Environment Commission. Space is limited and online registration for each volunteer is required. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toed shoes. SSL hours available.

Program Description

The Financial Empowerment Program (FEP) provides low-income individuals and families with the opportunity to work one-on-one or in group settings with trained volunteers, either as Financial Empowerment Educators or Financial Coaches.

Both roles focus on empowering clients to make informed financial decisions and progress toward self-identified goals.

Responsibilities:The primary role of both Educators and Coaches is to provide structure, guidance, encouragement, and access to resources, not to make decisions for clients or provide investment advice.

Time Commitment

Volunteers commit to approximately a minimum of 30 hours over one year, including required training.

Dress Code

The dress code is casual at minimum, with business casual preferred. Please avoid streetwear or attire intended for sleep, exercise, swimming, or nightlife. Clothing should be clean, professional, and appropriate for a community-based service setting.

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

Sandy Spring Museum recently acquired a large archival collection that needs to be....vacuumed!  That's right - 100 years of dust needs to be carefully vacuumed off of each object before it can go into storage.  if you always wanted to handle historic documents, this is your opportunity.  No prior experience necessary.

Sandy Spring Museum's Strawberry Festival is one of the year's most fun ways to volunteer. The event requires about 200 volunteers who serve in many different capacities - helping with set up and tear down, running children's activities, helping vendors get set up and wearing the Strawberry Festival mascot costume!

Engage with customers visiting Sandy Spring Museum's gift shop.  Assist and manage purchases.  The gift shop features handmade original works by regional artists, offering a unique shopping opportunity to visitors and a sales outlet for artists.  

You MUST be available on weekdays between 10 am - 4 pm.  If you are not available during these hours, please do not apply for this opportunity.

Regarding how we will track and verify SSL hours:

--- Students will track their volunteer hours by making a copy of the following template. The document must be titled following the template - (ex: “John Smith_2021-2022 Time Collection”). On the first row list your full name. On the second row, please state if you are applying for the PVSA award.

--- After each class, document the date, the duration and the preparation time of the class. The default total class preparation time is the same as the duration of the class. (Ex. If your class is 40 minutes long, you enter 40 minutes for the class preparation). 

--- If your preparation time is more than the default time, PLE and all its staff reserve the right to view your lesson plans. After reviewing all materials you created in preparation and a possible interview, we determine if the preparation time logged is appropriate or if it should be adjusted based on length, amount, and quality of material. We generally do not award more than 2 hours of preparation time. You will retain copyright over your plans. 

--- Any orientation, training and meeting times will also be counted toward your volunteer time. Please enter the event name, date, and duration. Please be aware preparation time is not applicable to this circumstance (ex: New faculty online orientation, 4/21/2010, 1 hour). 

--- We will send certificates of verified volunteer hours and complete volunteer forms (SSL, NHS, etc.) upon request. 

--- All other forms of volunteering (eg. advertisement, management, newsletter writing, general curriculum development) will be tracked on an hour-for-hour basis the amount of time served when supervised. If items are completed without live supervision, they are reviewed on a case by case basis. Most curriculum development, newsletters, and proposals written will be awarded 1-2 hours, based on length and quality.

This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until schools resume normal status.

Summer String Institute (SSI) is a two-week camp for string players in grades 2-12. The camp is held at the River Road Unitarian in Bethesda, MD. It provides students with a holistic musical experience that includes lessons, chamber music, orchestral experience, music theory, movement, and more!

Volunteers at camp will help the Director and our faculty with setting up and cleaning up for each class and rehearsal, checking students in and out of the camp, distributing snacks and water during breaks, and performing administrative duties such as making copies, organizing music and folders, and other camp daily logistics as needed.

We need multiple volunteers for each week of camp. The hours of work are 9 am- 5 pm Monday-Thursday and 9 am- 6 pm on Fridays. The first session of camp is from July 20-24, and the second session is from July 27-31.
