Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Barbara for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday at Elmhirst Parkway Neighborhood Conservation Area in Bethesda, MD. 

Day of instructions will be shared with those registered directly with Montgomery Parks.

We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs including porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata) and bush honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.

Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long socks, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, flathead screwdrivers, weed wrenches/uprooters, small folding hand saws, and/or loppers if you have them. Gardening-type gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.

This event is capped at 10 people.

This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to join this event.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are a nonprofit retail outlet that sells donated building supplies, household goods and furniture at deep discounts. Volunteers work with staff and other volunteers on donation intake, merchandising, customer service, and general upkeep of the store. The ReStore depends on enthusiastic volunteers for everything from bringing in donated items to helping us sort donations in our backroom. We welcome volunteers with many skills, capabilities and experience levels to volunteer with us one day at a time, or by making a longer-term commitment.

ReStore® is an integral part of Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland. We are also flexible with shift times for regular consistent volunteers

ReStore® is SSL and ACS approved. We start our volunteer at 14 years of age and a paper waiver with parent/guardian signature is required for those under 18.

RisuCon is an annual anime and cosplay convention with media screenings, panels, contests, cosplay, vendors, and more! Hosted by The Montgomery County Comic & Cosplay Club, we need volunteers to help run this convention

REGISTRATION: Responsibilities include preparing tickets, scanning QR codes(may need to use personal mobile device), handing out badges/wristbands and ensuring crowd traffic runs smoothly.

PROGRAMMING: Responsibilities include checking badges/wristbands at the door, counting amount of people in attendance, ensuring panels run smoothly being on time with no discriminatory content being presented, and keeping an eye out for attendee disturbances.

ACTIVITIES ROOM: Responsibilities include running games and crafts, helping lead activities, and general monitoring of the room.

VENDOR ROOM: Responsibilities include assisting vendors with set up or break-down, ensuring crowd traffic runs smoothly, watching a vendor's table as they take a break, checking badges/wristbands at the door and general monitoring of the room.

COSPLAY BARN: Responsibilities include assisting artists or cosplay guests with set up or break-down, clearing tables and floors after each crafting activity, checking badges/wristbands at the door and ensuring crowd traffic runs smoothly.

PHOTO OPS: Responsibilities include assisting photographers with taking pictures, printing out shots for attendees on Risucon printer, and crowd control.

HEALTH & SAFETY: Responsibilities include policy enforcement, guiding cars to park, setting up banners and equipment, crowd and line control, checking badges/wristbands at perimeters, packing up supplies and loading them into cars.

INFO SERVICES: Responsibilities include answering any questions attendees have, providing directions, explaining the programming schedule, handing out water, roaming the con as mobile information and promoting events.

MERCHANDISE BOOTH: Responsibilities include processing merchandise payments for attendees, packing/unpacking goods, keeping track of transactions, and promoting sales.

IT: Responsibilities include setting up any audio/visual equipment, managing equipment during events, and troubleshooting technical issues.

SNACK BOOTH: Responsibilities include serving food, drinks and snacks to other volunteers and staff, confirming volunteer/staff badges, monitoring which foods/drinks are most popular, keeping the kitchen and booth area clean, and packing up leftovers at the end of the day.

Students intending to earn SSL hours will be under the primary supervision of the Volunteer Director, and secondary supervision of the Department Heads. Volunteers must be able to take directions, work in teams and/or independently, fulfill all responsibilities of the department assigned, and be prepared for an active shift.

Join Vietnamese American Services (VAS) as a volunteer for the Maryland Mid-Autumn Festival 2026, one of the largest Vietnamese cultural celebrations in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Since 2015, VAS has been dedicated to serving the Vietnamese-American community through education, health, social services, cultural preservation, and community engagement.

The Maryland Mid-Autumn Festival attracts more than 4,000 attendees each year and features live cultural performances, children's activities, traditional lantern celebrations, community resources, food vendors, local businesses, and family-friendly entertainment.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

You are welcome to participate as often as you’d like — monthly attendance is encouraged but not required.

Why It Matters

During rainstorms, discarded trash and recycling wash into storm drains and flow into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By removing litter from our neighborhood, we help prevent pollution and protect our waterways — even our drinking water. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community and environment.

Not every neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., region offers convenient access to a brick-and-mortar food pantry or other hunger resources. To help fill this gap, the Capital Area Food Bank brings no-cost pop-up markets directly into neighborhoods where they’re needed through their Mobile Markets, which offer monthly distribution of free fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable food, and other groceries to area residents.

Mobile Markets occur on the last or second-to-last Thursday of each month at the Rockville Senior Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with food distribution, including setting up tables of produce, bagging produce, helping families select and take food to their cars, and cleaning up.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit organization directly with any questions and/or concerns. The nonprofit is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. For SSL hours to be added to a student’s record, students must submit MCPS Form 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verification Form, to the school SSL coordinator by the due dates on the form (no later than the last Friday in May), which can be found at bit.ly/SSLReflection. Students will need to complete sections 1 and 3 of MCPS Form 560-51 in full. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

SSL Hours: 1 original educational coloring page = 1 SSL hour (research + design + learning element). Complex pages may earn 2 hours — see the tiered system below.

Where: Fully virtual — from home, by hand or digitally (tablet/software).

Who it helps: Pediatric patients in care settings supported by Arts-n-STEM4Hearts, including local hospitals and children's facilities.

Turn creativity into healing and learning! Volunteers create original coloring pages that blend cheerful art with a simple STEM learning element. We compile them into themed educational booklets and deliver them — or mail them digitally/print — to kids receiving care.

NOTE: You may use AI tools only to digitize and clean up your own hand-drawn designs (for example, to make lines bolder, convert to clean vector format, or improve scan quality for better printing).
Do not use AI to generate or construct the main illustrations, scenes, characters, or overall page content.

We award hours based on the depth of the page, so effort is recognized fairly:

Who it helps: Hospital patients, veterans, first responders, and assisted-living residents served by Arts-n-STEM4Hearts.

Brighten someone's day with a handmade card! Volunteers design and create handwritten cards that we deliver to people who need a little encouragement — patients, seniors, veterans, and first responders. Every card you make goes directly to someone in our community. Make 15 cards to earn 1 SSL hour. You're welcome to make as many sets as you'd like.

What materials or supplies do I need? You can use any supplies you have at home! Cardstock, printer paper, crayons, pens, paints, markers, or design digitally and print — whatever you've got. Feel free to be creative!

Do the cards have to be a specific size? Typically we receive cards about 5 x 7 inches, folded in half. Please put all cards in one envelope or bag, and group/label them together by the type of card (for example, "Get Well" or "Thank You").

How should I sign the cards? Do not give any personal information in the cards — this is for your safety. You can keep it anonymous, or write: "[Your first name], Arts-n-STEM4Hearts Foundation Volunteer."

Can you help with what to write inside? Of course! Here are a few starters — and feel free to research other appropriate card-message ideas too.

Get well cards:

"You are amazing, and someone is thinking of you today!"

"Sending you a big smile and lots of cheer. You brighten the world!"

"Wishing you a wonderful day filled with little joys."

"You matter, and you're awesome just as you are!"

Thank you cards for first responders or military:

DC JazzFest is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to support the 2026 DC JazzFest, taking place throughout Washington, DC during Labor Day weekend, September 2–7, 2026.

As one of the nation's premier jazz festivals, DC JazzFest brings together world-class artists, music lovers, and community members for a week of performances, educational programs, and cultural experiences.

Volunteers play a critical role in helping us create a welcoming, organized, and memorable experience for all attendees. Opportunities include guest services, registration, VIP support, stage assistance, merchandise, and more. Volunteers receive a festival t-shirt, community service hours (if applicable), valuable event experience, and the opportunity to support one of Washington, DC's premier cultural events.

Volunteer shifts are available throughout festival week, including city-wide events leading up to festival weekend at The Wharf and Arena Stage.

2026-2027 ongoing SSL Opportunities for youth sponsored by The Tacy Foundation

Here is a list of many different In-Person and remote opportunities that you are invited to choose this school year:

5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. The piece may be about how you discovered a side of yourself you had not known before these music classes. Relate how you would like to take what you learned into the world to share with others and to serve again. (1 SSL hour after it is published online or in the Newsletter). Piano Pals for Elementary school children, Guitar Pals for Elementary school children, and Piano Pals for Seniors.  Look for Summer Training sessions (coming in July) for new volunteers.  And for Fall opportunities in Title 1 schools.  Experienced mentors will teach new volunteers.  

9.  Receive invitations for Live Music events at Seniors facilities and hospitals throughout Montgomery County.  These are monthly in-person music programs by youth in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Germantown, and Gaithersburg.  Other live music opportunities continue in Frederick and Washington DC at Hopkins Sibley Memorial.

Volunteers will assist in distributing boxes of food, including fruit, vegetables and canned goods, to low-income senior citizens at AHC's Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building located in Silver Spring. Volunteers will bring food inside building to 2nd floor lobby using carts & elevators. Residents will pick up food boxes.

Volunteers should be friendly and reliable, able to work both independently and in a small group. Food boxes weigh between 20-40 pounds, so volunteers must be able to lift that amount onto tables & carts.

This year-long program invites high school students AND their parents to step into leadership roles and volunteer side-by-side, making a lasting impact in their communities. MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 100+concerts by the middle of 2026, involving 1.8k+ cumulative attendees and more than 600 unique student musicians. These include performances at 7 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 30 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org under Volunteer/FAQ. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Big Learning® is looking for high school students to volunteer in person in our Silver Spring (Wheaton area) office. Big Learning is preapproved to offer SSL hours to students in Montgomery County Public Schools. Opportunities are available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10am to 4pm from June 23rd through August 20th. Interested students may sign up for as many shifts as they like but must sign up for at least two consecutive hours at a time.

Big Learning® provides after school programming in foreign language and science & engineering during the school year. Volunteers will help us prepare materials for fall programs by sorting, counting, and bundling materials; cutting paper and other materials to size; organizing materials; and other basic office tasks. Any student who is routinely a no-show or who is not able to consistently count the correct bundle size will be removed from the schedule after 1-2 reminders to exercise greater care.

The Big Learning® office is located in Wheaton, two blocks off the Route 9 bus stop at Arcola and Kemp Mill Road. We are not within an easy walking distance to any food options so we encourage volunteers to bring snacks or lunch if they are planning on being here for several hours. There is a break room in our building.

There is a short flight of stairs to our suite, but we have accessible locations on the ground floor of the building where students with mobility issues will be able to participate. Se habla español.  Le français est parlé.

In the middle of August we'll begin another great Coyotes Cross Country season for kids ages 5 to 14 (elementary and middle school kids).  Practice will be every Tuesday and Thursday at Rocky Hill Middle School from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, as well as Sunday afternoons at 2:00 -- somewhere fun -- if we don’t have a meet.  We’ll participate in 6 or 7 local league meets on Sunday afternoons beginning in the middle of September.  Our last regular season meet will likely be early November.  Many of our kids will participate in “post season” which will include a national championship meet in late November or early December.

High school students can earn SSL hours by assisting at practices and/or meets under a lead coach's supervision.  The Junior Coach commitment is super-flexible.  Attend practices/meets as often or as little as you'd like.  We offer a great environment for high school students to both gain coaching experience and serve younger children in the community.  Students will lead warm-up runs, facilitate running drills and stretches, assist with conversational pace runs, and time the kids doing speed workouts.  Are you fast?  You'll likely help with our 13 & 14 year-olds.  Not all that fast?  You'll help with the youngest kids.  Helping kids grow and achieve great things is a very rewarding experience.

What an incredible last couple of seasons we've had. Coyotes Cross Country has been AAU Maryland Team Champions in both boys’ and girls’ divisions, and our 7 & 8 year-old boys were crowned AAU National Champions. We had a team place 3rd at the Cross Country Coaches National Championship in Knoxville, TN, and around 20 of our kids individually placed in the top 25, earning big medals at the national championships. We couldn’t be prouder!

Make a difference—and make someone's day! Volunteers ages 16 and older are needed for the Isadore and Bertha Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program, a free aquatic program serving children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities since 1972.

Under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist certified in aquatic therapy, volunteers help create a fun, supportive environment that provides therapeutic recreation and builds confidence in the water.

No experience is necessary—orientation and training are provided. Join us on most Saturday mornings during the school year and experience the joy of helping others while making lasting connections.

Regular walks provide them with much-needed exercise, mental stimulation, and one-on-one human interaction, all of which help keep them happy, healthy, and engaged. TAB plays an essential role in shaping library programs and spaces. Through discussion helping to make sure that the library is providing what our community needs. Stay Local Saturdays was created to celebrate Clarksburg’s vibrant local community by showcasing small businesses, makers, and community organizations in a welcoming, festive setting. Held on the second Saturday of each month, these themed events connect neighbors with high-quality local products, creative experiences, and family-friendly fun. Our goal is to support and spotlight local talent while creating meaningful opportunities for vendors and partners, and memorable gatherings that invite the community to shop local, connect, and celebrate all that Clarksburg has to offer.

What will I be doing? Volunteers will help create a positive and organized experience for everyone attending the event. Responsibilities may include helping with set-up and clean-up, greeting guests, assisting with activities, supporting local vendors or booths, helping families navigate the event, and making sure activity areas stay clean and welcoming. Volunteers may also help answer questions and assist event leaders throughout the day as needed.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Mobile FARMacy Markets! Community FarmShare runs mobile FARMacy markets at 9 different locations throughout Montgomery County from June to November. In 2026 we have 4 markets in Silver Spring, 2 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Germantown, 1 in Montgomery Village, and 1 in Rockville. Volunteers are needed to help our CFS staff set up and close down the market, restock the tables, hand out info/resources and generally be a welcoming, supportive, engaging team member to provide a positive experience in the community. We have boys from 2nd grade to 10th and girls from 4th grade to 8th grade. We are looking fro volunteers aged 13-18. Games usually run from around 8am-7pm with volunteers coming at least 10 minutes before game time. No experience needed we will teach you everything you need to know. Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. 

Session dates are (roughly):

Winter session 1 Early January-mid-February; Winter session 2 mid-February-early April; Spring session mid-April-mid June; Summer sessions (1-4) mid-June-early August; Fall session 1 early September-late October; Fall session 2 late October-mid-December.

Opportunity to help during Annual Turkish Festival in DC. 

The Annual Turkish Festival is a long-standing community event, and this year we will be celebrating its 24th year. It is one of the largest cultural festivals in Washington, DC. Each year, the festival is supported by more than 100 volunteers, including a core group of approximately 60–70 returning volunteers.

The festival runs from early morning through the evening. The opportunity is mostly structured around 4-hour shifts. Some volunteer for one shift, while others may volunteer for two shifts.

Student volunteers assist with a variety of festival-related service activities, including children’s tent activities, tea and coffee service, guest hospitality, volunteer check-in, stage area support, setup, breakdown, arranging tables and chairs, and general festival logistics.

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

At Re’s Kids Club children 4-10 years old can join us on select Saturdays throughout the academic year to experience the magic of Camp Levine in one afternoon. This drop-off “mini-camp” gives children the chance to explore multiple art forms—including hands-on instruction with two different instruments. Pizza dinner is provided!

Re’s Kids Club is looking for three responsible, mature Teen Apprentices to join us for the afternoon! Teen Apprentices will support teachers in the classroom and help guide and encourage kids in each activity. Teen Apprentices should be available for prep and the duration of the event, from 4:00–7:30 PM.

So What Else is looking for committed, responsible, and motivated high schoolers (rising 9th - rising 12th graders) to serve as Co-Instructors to help develop and implement curriculum for the Student Leadership Institute (SLI) for middle schoolers. SLI will be led by an MCPS certified teacher and up to 5 HSCs will be present for each 3-day session.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC. 

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

The People's Community Baptist church offers various opportunities to earn SSL hours.  We serve as a food distribution site on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to sort, bag, and hand out the food via a drive-through process.

On the 4th Saturdays (7:30am-9:30am), we serve as a host site for the SHARE (Self Help and Resource Program) food distribution program where volunteers are needed to help package bulk food for distribution.

Quarterly, (on Saturdays), we collect, sort, and distribute gently used clothes to the community.

On the first and third Wednesdays, we host a program/lunch for seniors and retirees (11am to 1pm).  Volunteers can assist in the room set set-up and break down of tables and chairs; and assist with serving lunch and clean up, and/or where needed.

We need volunteers to assist teachers with our weekly Sunday School classes (9am-10am), and with the set of technology equipment, etec.  We use volunteers to assist our media team

Regarding how we will track and verify SSL hours:

--- Students will track their volunteer hours by making a copy of the following template. The document must be titled following the template - (ex: “John Smith_2021-2022 Time Collection”). On the first row list your full name. On the second row, please state if you are applying for the PVSA award.

--- After each class, document the date, the duration and the preparation time of the class. The default total class preparation time is the same as the duration of the class. (Ex. If your class is 40 minutes long, you enter 40 minutes for the class preparation). 

--- If your preparation time is more than the default time, PLE and all its staff reserve the right to view your lesson plans. After reviewing all materials you created in preparation and a possible interview, we determine if the preparation time logged is appropriate or if it should be adjusted based on length, amount, and quality of material. We generally do not award more than 2 hours of preparation time. You will retain copyright over your plans. 

--- Any orientation, training and meeting times will also be counted toward your volunteer time. Please enter the event name, date, and duration. Please be aware preparation time is not applicable to this circumstance (ex: New faculty online orientation, 4/21/2010, 1 hour). 

--- We will send certificates of verified volunteer hours and complete volunteer forms (SSL, NHS, etc.) upon request.

CCACC Academy is looking for volunteers to assist with our Summer Camp in 2026. Through this program, student volunteers can earn SSL hours and gain valuable experience supporting their local community.

Volunteers will be responsible for check-in/check-out, helping move students between activities, and assisting with program logistics. The camp will run from 9 am to 6 pm, and volunteers can select a shift time and the weeks that work best for them.

Volunteer with Imagination Stage this summer. Teen volunteers will gain experience assisting professional teaching artists and learn what it takes to put on an Imagination Stage camp--from setting up the classroom space to modeling exemplary behavior and creating a positive creative atmosphere for campers. Teen volunteers are not required to commit for the full summer. Teen volunteers are selected to work on a "camp-by-camp" basis. Volunteers can commit from anywhere from 1-6 weeks with Imagination Stage The camp day typically lasts from 9:00-4:00. Half day options are also available. Do you love being outdoors, getting your hands in the soil, and helping beautiful spaces thrive? We’re looking for volunteer gardeners to support our community gardens and help maintain green spaces that seniors, families, and neighbors enjoy all year long.

- Plant, water, weed, and care for flowers, shrubs, and vegetables
- Help maintain garden beds, walkways, and small landscape features
- Support seasonal clean‑ups and beautification days

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make cookies and other baked treats to share with food insecure families in our community that we serve. These baked treats are a nice way to provide a fun snack to go along with the other foods that we are providing for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form): 

NOTE: Items should be baked fresh the day before.  Please do not make cookies ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them.

-Please take photo of them being made and a group photo of the baked items once you've finished. 

-Cookies and muffins should be put into Ziplock bags in batches of 4 and loaves should be wrapped tightly in either Saran Wrap or a gallon size Ziplock bag. Please label them and note if nuts are present.  

-Make a log by writing down the number items made, and have your parent initial it. 

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the baked items and your log of the amounts of the items.  Please submit your work via the form only once.  

Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator.  They will then credit your hours. 

Baked goods donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your baked goods in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

We are also able to accept baked goods at the TPSS Coop (201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912) on ALL Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30am, but please let us know what dates and the amounts you are going to be donating by emailing us at thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com at least 3 days in advance.  Please note that if the weather is bad (rain/snow) you must contact us the day before so that we can give you an alternative drop off location.  Please drop off your baked goods behind the TPSS Coop building on Columbia Avenue to one of our members (not inside to a TPSS Coop employee). We will be packing produce outside.  Thanks!

Join Rock Creek Conservancy and partners (National Park Service, Montgomery Parks) to remove invasive plants from Rock Creek. Invasive plants are a major threat to our fragile forests, and stopping their spread helps allow native plants to thrive in the understory. Volunteers help restore forest areas, improve water quality, and protect native wildlife while working outdoors.

Rock Creek Conservancy provides tools and instruction at each event. No prior experience is required.
