Program Description:

Join us for Fall Leaf Suncatchers. We will learn all about Autumn and create a Fall Leaf Suncatcher for you to take home. This hands-on activity will stimulate your child's creativity and imagination, while helping them develop critical fine motor skills.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend.

-After School Program Junior Leaders (Counselor-in-Training) opportunities are for high school students (9th - 12th grade), 14 years old - 18 years old.  This opportunity is during the school year.

Looking for volunteers who can create coloring pages for children ages 5 to 10 years.

At Grace Helping Hands, volunteers are the heart of our mission. We are a grassroots nonprofit organization (501(c)(3)) dedicated to providing toiletry kits, including essential feminine hygiene products, to homeless women and children.

Join us in making a difference by helping to assemble these essential kits!

Kit Assembly Details:
We will be assembling toiletry kits on a monthly basis, providing an ongoing opportunity for volunteers to contribute to our cause. Each kit includes carefully selected items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and other personal care essentials.

We will be assembling toiletry kits at local libraries, all kit making sites will be at public space on specific dates.

You can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for each hour you volunteer. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community while fulfilling your service requirements.

THE PLAN:

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

We are seeking student volunteers to help at our monthly community adoption event, held the second Saturday of each month.

Under the direct supervision of Freckles Foundation team members, volunteers will:

Assist with set up and break down of chairs, tables, and foundation resources. Lifting is required. 

Help handle puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens during the event. A typical comfort around animals is needed. 

Learn about the foundation’s mission and goals so the volunteer can engage with community members to share information about our programs. This will require some advance "homework" from the volunteer.

Students in middle school will need to be accompanied by an adult the first time they volunteer.

This is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience, earn volunteer hours, and make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

For nearly 50 years, the City of Rockville has operated an annual Holiday Drive that relies on a collaborative partnership with local churches, schools, civic organizations, service clubs, businesses, social service agencies, and individuals working together to distribute holiday baskets to Rockville families and seniors in need. CCACC Academy is one of the divisions of the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center, a non-profit educational institution, since 2021.

We are recruiting youth volunteers to assist in our afterschool program as Teacher Assistants. Volunteers will be responsible for check in/check out, helping with moving students to and from different activities, and assisting with program logistics.

Description: While we no longer operate a pantry at Lakeforest Mall, we're still just as committed to serving the Gaithersburg community. Our food distribution operations have moved to South Lake Elementary School. Every Tuesday, So What Else, with the help of our incredible team, provides free food to over 500 people. Volunteers can park in the parking lot that is to the right down the hill close to the playground at the school.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. This shift involves interacting with clients, other volunteers, and So What Else team members. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty( NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

10:30 am to 2:30 pm ( 4 Hours): Volunteers will assist in setting up the distribution, breaking down empty boxes, cleaning up, and assisting with the distribution breakdown.

To get to our distribution site for your shift, Type "South Lake Elementary School, 18201 Contour Rd, Gaithersburg, MD" into your GPS. This will guide you to the school. For parking, please use the lot located to the right, down the hill, near the playground. After parking, walk up toward the distribution area and look for the So What Else van or team setup. Locate a team member and let them know you are there to volunteer at the distribution.

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

Description: We’re seeking compassionate volunteers to support families in need through our Montgomery County distribution center, which receives thousands of pounds of donated food, clothing, diapers, toys, and essential household items daily. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring these items reach the people who need them most.

Tasks may include distributing food to families, preparing grocery bags for home deliveries, organizing donated goods, assisting with inventory, loading and unloading delivery vehicles, and maintaining a clean and welcoming space for all.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful difference, earn SSL hours, and engage the whole family—children over 10 are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian (required for anyone under 16).

Please make sure to wear close-toed shoes when volunteering!

NEW: Traffic Volunteer (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM) – We need 1 volunteer daily participating in the Maryland Community Service Program to assist with managing traffic outside. This role is outdoors, so please dress accordingly( 18+ only)

Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks who have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible.

YMCA Youth Links Mentoring is looking for adult volunteers to be positive role models for children between the ages of 5-15. Our program is a collaboration between Montgomery County Child Welfare, the Circuit Court, Montgomery County Public Schools, the Department of Juvenile Services and the YMCA. Many of the children in our program live in foster or other out-of-home care; most are monitored by Child Welfare because of neglect, abuse or other challenges in the home.  Mentoring guarantees these young people that there is someone who cares about them, and that they are not alone in dealing with life’s day-to-day challenges.  

With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can support boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities. Volunteer mentors are required to attend informational and training sessions. Once matched with a mentee, mentors are encouraged to attend continuing education workshops and program events.

Are you a Junior or Senior interested in teaching and making a real difference in the lives of young children? Join us at Friendship Children’s Center and spend up to four hours a day alongside our teachers, helping infants through Pre-K students grow, learn, and thrive!

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

Empowering the Ages (ETA) is recruiting 15 youth (9-12th grade) volunteers to join Caregiving Across Generations, an innovative project in partnership with Winter Growth, a nonprofit offering Memory Care, Adult Medical Day, and Respite Care programs. Together, we’re tackling one of Maryland’s biggest challenges: supporting families caring for loved ones with dementia.

As a youth volunteer, you will:

✅ Create practical resources—like a Caregiver Handbook and Interactive Guide—that families across Maryland will use.

✅ Learn about aging, dementia, and caregiving through hands-on service-learning.

✅ Connect with caregivers and hear real stories that make an impact. You’ll gain research experience, communication skills, leadership training, and service hours—all while making life easier for families and building a more caring future.

Touch4Life has received a large grant to distribute fresh fruit and vegetables to the community as part of its B-FRESH™ initiative. B-FRESH™ is an innovative way for Black and Brown women and their families to enhance and stay healthy throughout a breast cancer journey and beyond. More information regarding about this initiative can be found by visiting this link: https://www.touch4life.org/b-fresh/

Regarding the grant, by the end of 2025, Touch4Life will have (i) identified, engaged, and established 5 community partners and 5 provider partners and (ii) distributed free and fresh produce to community members at 45 different events.

The taste test events will showcase healthy recipes from Feed Your Fight: A Nutrition Guide with Recipes & Testimonials from Thrivers – a collaboration between the amazing nutritionist and wellness coach Sharon Hawks and the unstoppable breast cancer survivor and Touch4Life founder Laura Crandon! 

Volunteers will help set up the events and serve taste plates to community members who are in attendance.

Join our team of dedicated volunteers who bring fresh, healthy and delicious meals from our Takoma Park kitchen to our homebound neighbors. Together, we are creating a more resilient, interconnected and compassionate community.

Get started by submitting a volunteer application

Each weekday, Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park and Silver Spring prepares two nourishing meals for hundreds of clients, helping them maintain their health and independence as they age, battle illness and recover from injuries. Demand for our services is rising -- tripling since 2020 -- and we're growing fast to meet the need.

Delivery volunteers pick up meals around noon and hand them to clients at their homes along routes designed to take less than 90 minutes. Volunteers often work in pairs, with one driving and the other running meals from the car to the neighbor's door. Volunteers can choose recurring shifts on the same route or sign up for one-time shifts as their schedule allows.

Note: Drivers use their own cars and must have a valid driver's license.

Help us feed neighbors in need by holding a canned food drive with your club, faith-based group, civic group, or business. Food drives are needed year round, not just at the holidays.

Won't you help us deliver groceries to low-income seniors who can't get out to a food pantry? Pick up food packages at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad on Friday afternoons and transport them to a low income senior citizen apartment building in the Bethesda area. Seniors are among the most vulnerable to food insecurity. Please help ensure they are receiving the food and nutrition they need to maintain their health and well-being.

Drive your own vehicle to transport food packages to area apartment buildings. May require indoor masking and lifting/carrying items up to 25 lbs. in weight.

Classics AAU Basketball is seeking volunteer coaches for its AAU club youth teams for 2025 and 2026 through out the year . Coaching commitment is typically two practices/week and then tournaments and league games on most weekends throughout the year. Coach travel and related expenses are reimbursable or deductible on taxes as a volunteer.

Must have at least experience of playing high school and/or college sports and a desire and commitment to coach youth sports. Basketball specific experience a plus. 

Must have clean background investigation through Lexis/Nexis and subject to AAU membership acceptance. 

Getting Into It: After an initial phone interview with AAU club president and other coach(es) as needed, we then follow-up by an in-situ evaluation on the court coaching practices of preferred age group/gender players. 

Must complete Positive Coaching Alliance and other AAU online courses in Youth Protection and AAU Coaches Excellence Course within 60 days

John L. Gilder Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA)

The John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents,  located in Rockville, Maryland, is a community-based, public residential, clinical, and educational facility serving children and adolescents with severe emotional disabilities. Project Knitwell volunteers meet weekly on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5 pm with a group of students for knitting instruction during the school year. The fall session starts September 9th. UMAN is in urgent need of an experienced grant writer familiar with the logic model. Volunteer needed to assist with a grant application due Oct 30th 2025. This can be a one- time project, or a continuing opportunity. Grant Writer will work directly with the Program Manager. This opportunity can be remote after initial introduction.

Volunteers are invited to knit, sew or crochet at home to make blankets as gifts for hospitalized children. Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Meetings are held in the lower level of the University of Maryland extension office, Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park, 18410 Muncaster Road, Derwood.

Track deadlines and maintain a grant calendar.

Write and edit proposals, LOIs, and reports.

Collaborate with the Executive Director to gather data and financials.

Grace Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing toiletry kits and feminine hygiene products to homeless women and children in Montgomery County and beyond. Volunteers will participate in a writing campaign to raise awareness and request support from local legislators, businesses, and manufacturers. Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly, ham, turkey, etc) to share with the families we serve in our community in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A sandwich is a small way that we can bridge the distance between us and them and help them with their food insecurity.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making sandwiches until schools return to normal status.  10 sandwiches= 1 hour of service

Note:  Sandwiches should be made the day before.  Please do not make them in advance because they won't be at their best. The sandwiches should be made so that they are ready to eat.  Please add mayonnaise and mustard to the sandwiches with meat in them.  Cheese is welcome too.  There is a high demand for TURKEY sandwiches.  :)

Please note that if you are making more than 20 sandwiches that you should be making different types of sandwiches so that they are not all PB&J.

If you plan to make more than 60 sandwiches you must reach out to me to get my approval.  Please let me know how many sandwiches you are making and how many of each type.  

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

-Please document your sandwich making by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the bagged sandwiches once you've finished making them

-Make a log by writing down the date(s), the number of sandwiches made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it

-Use the bread bag to package them and label the outside of the bag with the type of sandwiches made.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making casseroles until schools return to normal status.  1 casserole= 1 hour of service

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

Favorite casseroles include: tuna casseroles, chili, mac and cheese, baked ziti, and chicken noodle, but all casseroles are loved!

-Please taking a photo of the casserole(s) being made and a photo of the completed casseroles

-Please use a disposable aluminum pans 9 x 13 for your dish.

-Please cook your casserole prior to freezing it.

-Please label each casserole with the name and the ingredients (for example: Chicken and Cheese Casserole: chicken,pasta, olive oil, onion, mushrooms, bread crumbs, butter, cheese). 

-Please wrap them well with aluminum foil. Please do not use the plastic cover that comes with some pans.

Small Things Matter's helps those in need by providing them with food, literacy, and general support.

We are looking for volunteers to help us put together cleaning care kits to share with the those in need in our community. 

Cleaning and disinfecting one's home is always a good practice and this is even more important in homes where a family member has coronavirus.  In some of the apartments we serve half of the residents there have at least 1 member of their household who has COVID-19.  We would love to have individuals and groups helping us put together these cleaning kits.

We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

We will award 1 hour of community service for each kit which can be used towards:

1 cleaning care kit = 1 community service hour

All items can be purchased inexpensively from the Dollar Store/Dollar Tree.

Each kit must contain 4 of 6 items listed below (each item in the kit must be different/ no duplicates):

PLUS 2 sponges or a roll of paper towels

AND a kind note

All items must be placed in double bagged plastic bags and placed inside a paper box so that boxes can be stacked on top of one another.

Volunteers Needed for the 2025 Nadim Khan Memorial Homeless Resource Day.  The Homeless Resource Day is a community effort to provide a one-day one-stop opportunity for Montgomery County residents experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness to access services, resources and information. We need volunteer guides, registrants, food distributors, etc.

Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas.  We have various types of volunteer opportunities available but are specifically looking for volunteers who can help answer questions about technology.

Volunteer service providers must be over 18. Some services take place in the home, like connecting a new computer or troubleshooting a cable connection. Other questions might be able to be answered over the phone.  We are looking for volunteers with an interest in basic troubleshooting for home computers, printers, networking, and smartphones.  Complicated or time consuming questions are referred to paid providers.

Candidates must be personable and patient and feel that they have a good rapport with seniors.

Volunteers fill out an application and go through a background check and a short training.  You choose which service requests you would like to accept - there is no requirement to take any minimum number of requests and you do what is convenient for you. Most requests are for weekdays but there is great flexibility in dates.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to contribute to your community. If you would like to help seniors to age in place in their homes and increase connection with their community, we would love to have you.

 We are always looking for individuals who have the time and dedication to commit to Red Wiggler. Most volunteer opportunities are Monday through Friday, from 9 am - 12 pm or 1 pm - 3 pm.

Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas. You volunteer on your schedule!

Volunteers can choose to help as a driver (driving seniors to or from doctor's appointments, etc), a notetaker during medical appointments, with friendly check-ins (phone calls and/or visits), absent owner services (such as watering plants or picking up packages) or to do light home repair tasks (such as lifting boxes, fixing door hinges, hanging drapes, etc), limited snow removal, or provide limited technical assistance for computers and other devices. 

Our most-requested service is rides to doctor appointments during weekdays.These rides are crucial for our members and provide a way to get to know the member during conversation on the ride.

Volunteer service providers can be any age (over 18), and do not have to be seniors themselves. Although many volunteers are also members.

You choose which service requests you would like to accept - there is no requirement to take any minimum number of requests and you do what is convenient for you. Most requests are on weekdays but there is great flexibility in dates.

Volunteers fill out an application and go through a background check and a short training. Requests and communication is through email.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to contribute to your community. If you would like to help seniors to age in place in their homes and increase connection with their community, we would love to have you.

Background:

Garrett Park Archives has a permanent collection of approximately 147 books, which are under the stewardship of the Town’s Archivist. Opened, May 12,1985 by then resident and Town Council member William H. Morris, the collection is chiefly books authored by residents of the Town. The collection includes hardcovers and paperbacks housed on a custom-made oak bookcase located within the Town’s Office. The collection needs a basic level of asset management to include the book’s physical condition, location, and some preservation needs.

Project Overview:

 All books require an initial condition form which records its current condition and shelf location as well as some metadata information. Some books have been cataloged. The forms will help to identify gaps in the record keeping. Several hard cover books have been identified as needing endbands inserted into loose hollows to reinforce their book spines. The project requires 1-2 hours of your time along with basic experience in record keeping and crafting. All supplies and materials are provided.

Drivers are needed on Thursdays to deliver food packages to the doorstep of vulnerable Upcounty families, drivers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs. Delivery is contactless.  Addresses provided upon arrival at the Hub on delivery day.

You will arrive at the UpCounty Hub between 10:45am-11:00am on Thursday and pull around to the side of the building to the loading dock. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN HANDICAP SPOTS! Food packages with addresses will be provided upon arrival. If possible please try to register for this shift by the Wednesday before so we can assign boxes to the correct number of cars.

We are a volunteer-driven organization building and delivering beds to children without a bed of their own.

Across Montgomery County and the Country, too many children go to sleep without a bed of their own. SHP is a national nonprofit committed to ending childhood bedlessness, one bed at a time. Every child we serve receives a complete bed set—frame, mattress, pillows, and bedding—at no cost to their family. When you join a Build Day, you’re giving a child more than a bed—you’re giving them dignity, rest, and hope.

How You Can Help: The Volunteer Experience

As a volunteer with SHP Beds, your role is instrumental in fabricating beds for children in our community. Engage in hands-on tasks such as sanding, drilling, staining, and branding, transforming raw lumber into finished pieces of comfort. Structured as an assembly line, each station is a vital step in the full fabrication of these bed parts. Structured so anyone can join and be part of a greater cause. No Experience Needed!

Your craftsmanship directly contributes to providing a fundamental need for children who currently sleep on the floor. Whether you're a seasoned builder or new to the tools, your dedication in the workshop plays a vital part in the creation of beds that carry not just functionality but also the warmth of care and compassion.

Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship over a period of time between a youth and more knowledgeable and supportive person who provides consistent support, guidance and concrete help. Research has shown that mentors can have a significant positive impact on the life of a young person.

Mentoring programs operate at Twinbrook Elementary School, Meadow Hall Elementary School, and Beall Elementary School. If you are interested in being a mentor, you must complete an application and participate in a screening process.

The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Our goal is to help children learn about gardening and understand the importance of sustaining their environment.

Environmental Educator Assistants provide high-quality programming and interpretive experiences for our participants and guests. They both assist naturalists during various programs (school programs, scout programs, public programs, birthday parties, etc.) as well as design and facilitate independent interpretive stations. This position includes public speaking, program set-up/tear-down, animal handling, writing interpretive station outlines, and using biofacts (skulls, pelts, feathers, etc.).

Environmental Educator Assistants will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, comfort in working with all ages and abilities, and a passion for connecting with others. Volunteers will collaborate with nature center staff to develop and implement environmental education-themed activities for the general public and for special events at CCNC. Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Fingerprinting and background check are required as you will be working closely with children.

Trail Guardians help to keep the trails in our surrounding forest preserve clean and well maintained. This position includes picking up litter/recycling and keeping trail borders maintained. All work is done independently without the assistance of a naturalist.

Trail Guardians must demonstrate a love of the outdoors. Volunteers will receive an orientation course as well as direct guidance on where and when to perform the work. This position includes daily check-ins with the CCNC volunteer coordinator to determine work schedule, quality of work, hours worked, etc. Volunteers will be supervised by the volunteer coordinator and staff naturalists.

Trial Guardians work a scheduled day and commit as much time as they are able and willing each week. The scheduled day will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. 

Session dates are (roughly):

Winter session 1 Early January-mid-February; Winter session 2 mid-February-early April; Spring session mid-April-mid June; Summer sessions (1-4) mid-June-early August; Fall session 1 early September-late October; Fall session 2 late October-mid-December.

Not every neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., region offers convenient access to a brick-and-mortar food pantry or other hunger resources. To help fill this gap, the Capital Area Food Bank brings no-cost pop-up markets directly into neighborhoods where they’re needed through their Mobile Markets, which offer monthly distribution of free fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable food, and other groceries to area residents.

Mobile Markets occur on the last Thursday of each month at the Rockville Senior Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with food distribution, including setting up tables of produce, bagging produce, helping families select and take food to their cars, and cleaning up.

The Youth Commission helps shape the future of Rockville by identifying gaps in youth services, advocating for innovative programs, and developing recommendations for the Mayor and Council. The commission consists of 11 members who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council. Members are appointed for one-year terms and may be reappointed for additional one-year terms. The commission meets a minimum of eight times per year and meetings are open to the public. If you are a middle or high school student in the City of Rockville and are interested in being an advocate for your peers, please submit your interest. Youth commissioners will serve a one-year term from October 2025-September 2026. Meetings are held in person or virtually, one day per month.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
After each Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) bed build, all built bed material (headboards, side rails, slats, etc.) is transported from the build site and organized in our Gaithersburg storage unit. We are looking for reliable volunteers to meet us at our Gaithersburg storage facility, help unload the bed parts from our transport vehicle, and store them neatly inside the unit. This is a short but essential role that keeps our future deliveries running smoothly and ensures we are ready for the next bed delivery.

**Please Note** We are expecting this to take between 30 minutes to an hour, but we are providing a time window (earliest to latest) since actual start and end times may vary slightly depending on build end time and transport arrival.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is hosting an adoption event on Sunday, November 23rd at the Silver Spring PetSmart. (12020 Cherry Hill Road, Silver Spring, MD) from 11:15 - 3:30. We could use help with handling dogs at the event or driving animals to and from the event. If you are under 18 you must have a parent present at all times. If assigned a dog to handle, the parent must be the one physically holding the dog's leash. All volunteers are required to stay for the full duration of the event.

Spread holiday cheer by adding an ornament to our Community Tree.  The Tree will go up at the Kentlands Mansion in December.  This event is open to all ages. One ornament=1 SSL hour, with a maximum of two ornaments. Ornament supplies can be purchased on your own, or select supplies are available at the Kentlands Mansion. Ornaments can be dropped off anytime Monday-Friday / 9 am – 4 pm December 1 to December 19 at Kentlands Mansion.  If you want to drop the ornaments off outside of office hours, our tree is located in the garden (December only!). You MUST take a picture and send it to us, so we can confirm the ornament is there. E-mail your name, grade and school with a picture of your ornament to  Jennie.Stroup@gaithersburgmd.gov for SSL hours.

Operating also as “The Lord’s Table” Soup Kitchen, our charitable organization prepares and serves free meals daily, October - April, Monday thru Friday, at Epworth UMC, 9008 Rosemont Drive in Gaithersburg, MD. Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Ross Boddy Neighborhood Recreation Center in Sandy Spring, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.   

As part of our Adopt-a-Road commitment to the historic Prathertown
neighborhood in Gaithersburg, we periodically offer activities that
keep the area clean. For two hours participants
can pick up trash and recyclables found along Wightman Road, between
Brink Road and Aspenwood Road.

Grab a friend or 2, put a group together and join us. Make it fun day, enjoy
the fresh air and earn SSL hours by cleaning up! We meet at the corner
of Prathertown and Wightman Road. If you can, bring a non-perishable food item to donate to our food drive.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is hosting an adoption event on Sunday, October 26th at the Rockville PetSmart. (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895) from 11:15 - 2:30. We could use help with handling dogs at the event or driving animals to and from the event. If you are under 18 you must have a parent present at all times. If assigned a dog to handle, the parent must be the one physically holding the dog's leash. All volunteers are required to stay for the full duration of the event.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters during the event. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check-in starts at 11:45 am). You should plan to stay until 2:30 pm.

Signing up on this platform does NOT guarantee you a volunteer spot. On the Monday before the event, our events team will reach out to reconfirm your availability. You MUST respond to that email to be added to the list of volunteers for the event.

Many middle schools seek high school volunteers to assist with their Grade 6 Outdoor Education program, and the schools listed on the Google form linked below have asked for assistance in identifying potential assistants to work with them during Outdoor Ed. 

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program. 

There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.

High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

WAPO welcome youth musicians to join our team.

Students age from 12 to 22.

We have two concerts scheduled in Fall and Spring at Culture Center each year in Gaithersburg, and it is free to community and public.

Our youth musicians will perform with professional and amateur musicians and community choirs with classical and popular musical and songs.

Each concert has been introducing the music and enjoy the music with all music lovers at all age group.

To address the acute illiteracy crisis among early elementary school students, we are recruiting adult & high school volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with 2nd graders from October to May on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,  and Thursdays, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at three locations: Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, and Germantown.  Volunteers can sign up for one or two nights/week.  No prior experience is required.  Only a background check and participation in a 4-hour orientation session.  Tutors are at least 21 years old.  Readers are at least 16 years old.  We need both!  Help us get these kids back up to grade level!!  If you would like to sign up, go HERE.

Join us for our Teen Advisory Board! Are you interested in helping shape library programs and spaces for service-learning hours? Each month we gather to discuss how to improve teen services at MCPL. We review county policies regarding libraries as well as other relevant official guidance. We also support library programs through volunteer efforts. Joining our TAB and becoming an officer provides leadership experience which prepares teens for being leaders in the community, on college campuses, and good citizens of the world. For ages 13-18.

Help with sustainable holiday outreach and distributing reusable bags before the new plastic bag ban! We will be working at the County offices in Wheaton to stuff reusable bags with information on the new plastic bag ban that will be distributed over the holiday shopping season. Pre-approved for SSL hours and MCPS students are off school, come join us!
