Grace Helping Hands is a grassroots nonprofit committed to supporting homeless women and children by providing essential hygiene kits and feminine products. We serve communities across Montgomery County, Howard County, Prince George’s County, Baltimore City and Washington DC through partnerships with local shelters and pantries.

We are seeking a volunteer Grant Researcher and Writer to help identify funding opportunities and craft strong, mission-aligned proposals. This role is vital to expanding our impact and sustainability as we grow.

Responsibilities:

Research grants from foundations, corporations, and government sources.

Track deadlines and maintain a grant calendar.

Write and edit proposals, LOIs, and reports.

Collaborate with the Executive Director to gather data and financials.

Develop reusable content for future applications.

Qualifications:

Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.

Experience with grant writing or nonprofit development preferred not mandatory.

Willingness to learn.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Position: Fundraiser Volunteer

We’re looking for enthusiastic and creative volunteers to help expand our impact and ensure more women and children in crisis receive the care they deserve. As a Fundraiser Volunteer, you’ll play an essential role in helping Grace Helping Hands grow and sustain its mission through fundraising campaigns, donor outreach, and community engagement.

What You’ll Do:

- Assist with planning, promoting, and executing fundraising campaigns and events

- Reach out to potential donors, sponsors, and partners to build long-term relationships

This Student Service Learning (SSL) opportunity is approved for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) middle and high school students.

Students can earn SSL hours by creating handwritten encouragement cards for unhoused women and children served by Grace Helping Hands.

30 encouragement cards = 1 SSL hour

• Students may earn up to 3 SSL hours per day during the school year

Looking for volunteers to help with our fall basketball league. Volunteers will be working with the game clock, the game book and the concession stand. The seasons are ongoing in the fall, winter and spring. Games will be on Saturdays and Sundays in the Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda and Gaithersburg area. We have boys from 2nd grade to 10th and girls from 4th grade to 8th grade. We are looking fro volunteers aged 13-18. Games usually run from around 8am-7pm with volunteers coming at least 10 minutes before game time. No experience needed we will teach you everything you need to know. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has an adoption event on Sunday March 15th at the Falls Church PetSmart.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters during the event. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check in starts at 11:30 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

The final day to sign up for any event is the Friday before that specific event.

Signing up on this platform does NOT guarantee you a volunteer spot. On the Monday before the event, our events team will reach out to reconfirm your availability. You MUST respond to that email to be added to the list of volunteers for the event.

We need bilingual volunteers to call back people needing help who only speak Spanish. For liability reasons, this opportunity is for volunteers aged 18 and over, and does not qualify for MCPS SSL hours.  

This is an occasional support role and does not require a serious time commitment. We have a volunteer assigned every day ("officer of the day" -  OD) to check our phone messages and call people back. Most of the messages are in English, but if there is a message in Spanish and the OD does not speak Spanish, they would send you an email or text with the time of call and phone number, and leave the message on our answering system for you. When you have the time - in the evening, or the next day - you would listen to the message and call the person back to find out what they need, and set them up for a food delivery from our food driver if they're in our area. It's understood that there are days you would not be available. 

What you need: your own phone*, a good command of both English and Spanish, and a few hours per month.

Often members need help organizing a small space in their home such as a room, a cabinet or a drawer. They might ask for help with getting their documents in order at the end of the year or organizing clothes in their closets for the new season. Sometimes the request has to do with downsizing. Volunteers who would like to become Home Organizers receive a special training and often times work in pairs.

You can volunteer with Silver Spring Village as much or as little as your schedule permits. Join the litter cleanup at Twinbrook Park to take part in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. It’s a fun, hands-on way to make a real difference close to home. All supplies will be provided, and students can earn SSL hours while helping protect our waterways. Space is limited and online registration for each volunteer is required. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. City staff will be present to greet volunteers in front of the Twinbrook Community Recreation Center. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toed shoes.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The Rock Creek Conservation Corps (RC3) program provides high school students in Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC with a 6-week (June 29 to August 7) paid summer job in the conservation field. Students gain hands-on field experience, learn about environmental restoration efforts, and develop teamwork and leadership skills. Students learn about forest health, water quality, and stormwater management, and apply what they learn by participating in invasive plant removals, litter cleanups, and other related activities. Upon completion of the program, students have a wealth of knowledge and skills that they take with them in their next steps and gain a deeper connection to their community and Rock Creek. 

Eligibility:

No prior experience required! RC3 provides all necessary training and skills. Program Details:

As an RC3 member, you’ll work outdoors in Rock Creek and surrounding areas, helping to restore and protect this beautiful natural space. A majority of the program will take place outside, except when weather conditions are unsafe. Please note that participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the work sites each day.

Purpose:  Support neighbors by keeping walkways, driveways, and community paths safe and accessible during winter weather. This role is especially important for seniors, people with disabilities, and households that may struggle with heavy snow or icy conditions.

- Shovel snow from sidewalks, steps, and driveways
- Spread salt or ice melt to prevent slipping
- Clear pathways to mailboxes, trash bins, and vehicles
- Check in with assigned households after storms to ensure safe access
- Report any hazardous conditions that require additional support

What is a Teen Advisory Board (TAB)? TAB is a group of library teen volunteers that helps the library and the community by implementing, promoting and advocating for youth services in Montgomery County. The Teen Advisory Board will provide feedback on programs, assist librarians with planning and running events and will be library advocates. TAB volunteers have monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month, and other volunteer opportunities throughout the month. Feel free to drop in to check it out!

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make cookies and other baked treats to share with food insecure families in our community that we serve. These baked treats are a nice way to provide a fun snack to go along with the other foods that we are providing for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form): 

NOTE: Items should be baked fresh the day before.  Please do not make cookies ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them.

-Please take photo of them being made and a group photo of the baked items once you've finished. 

-Cookies and muffins should be put into Ziplock bags in batches of 4 and loaves should be wrapped tightly in either Saran Wrap or a gallon size Ziplock bag. Please label them and note if nuts are present.  

-Make a log by writing down the number items made, and have your parent initial it. 

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

Baked goods donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your baked goods in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

We are also able to accept baked goods at the TPSS Coop (201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912) on ALL Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30am, but please let us know what dates and the amounts you are going to be donating by emailing us at thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com at least 3 days in advance.  Please note that if the weather is bad (rain/snow) you must contact us the day before so that we can give you an alternative drop off location.  Please drop off your baked goods behind the TPSS Coop building on Columbia Avenue to one of our members (not inside to a TPSS Coop employee). The Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center has partnered with the Student Athletes for Educational Opportunities (SAFEO), Inc. to host the “Sports Safety Makes Winning Possible” conference dedicated to raising awareness, education, prevention, recovery, training and rehabilitation, associated with student athletes and sports-related injuries. The event will consist of a powerful panel of experts, who will engage an audience of DMV area student athletes, coaches, parents and other stakeholders in a discussion about sports safety. Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Build Day as we bring our student-designed conservation garden to life at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to dig in, plant, and learn. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll install native plants like black-eyed susans, purple coneflowers, and butterfly weed, creating a lasting outdoor classroom and gathering space for all.

Join Rockville Weed Warrior Leaders for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday. Space is limited and registration is required. Please only respond to this opportunity if you plan to attend the event. Small Things Matter's Crafting for Charity Program helps those in need with handmade items.  We are looking for volunteers to help us decorate bookmarks as part of our literacy program for underserved children.  We provide them with a choice of a brand new book and they also get to pick a handmade bookmark of their choice.  Encouraging a lifelong love of reading can help these children succeed in school and in life. We would love to have individuals and groups help us by decorating bookmarks.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by decorating bookmarks.

5 decorated bookmarks = 1 SSL hour of service.

-Purchase bookmarks from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Gionello-Blank-Cardstock-Bookmarks-Pre-Punched/dp/B0DK488PQC/.  Please note that you can also make your own bookmark blanks by purchasing cardstock and cutting them using a paper cutter to 6" x 2.5".  If you choose to make your own blanks make sure that they are cut well and look professional. Do not punch holes at the top of the bookmarks if you are making them.

-Please document your bookmark decorating by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the finished items once you've finished decorating them!

-Decorate the bookmarks either by using markers, paints, etc.  Please do not glue any 3-D items or use stickers/washi tape. Please do not include anything religious in either written words or pictures.  Do NOT sign the bookmarks with your name, etc. Take a group shot of the finished items.

Join us in honoring Earth Day with a community cleanup and gardening in Prathertown! Together, we’ll make a hands-on difference by keeping our local environment healthy and beautiful on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (weather permitting). 

Spend a Saturday outdoors enjoying the fresh air, connecting with neighbors, and helping care for our planet. Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road. In the morning we will be having a community cleanup, followed by sustainable gardening. We will work together to count and take photos of every bag of trash collected for a report to the Department of Transportation. You’re also welcome to bring a canned food item for our Earth Day food drive supporting local families.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter. 

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources. 

By registering, you acknowledge that volunteering may involve physical activity, handling sharp or heavy objects, and contact with unfamiliar persons or animals. Please exercise reasonable care and understand you assume any personal risk of injury or property damage.

A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

Volunteers will assist in distributing boxes of food, including fruit, vegetables and canned goods, to low-income senior citizens at AHC's Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building located in Silver Spring. Volunteers will bring food inside building to 2nd floor lobby using carts & elevators. Residents will pick up food boxes.

Volunteers should be friendly and reliable, able to work both independently and in a small group. Food boxes weigh between 20-40 pounds, so volunteers must be able to lift that amount onto tables & carts.

Arise and Flourish, is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance abuse prevention by sharing stories from persons in long-term recovery. Through the schools and community, we bring real life stories to our youth showing the devastation of the disease of addiction. By emphasizing the importance of understanding the cycle of addiction, our goal is to arm our youth with the knowledge of the dangers associated with drug and alcohol use, how to prevent addiction, and how to seek help.

Since 2017, Arise and Flourish has helped to bring a greater awareness of the addiction problem by visiting 490 Middle and High schools in Montgomery County, Maryland and speaking to more than 49,000 students.  We are run by volunteers who dedicate their time to visiting the schools. In order for our organization to grow and bring continued awareness to the schools and community, we need your help to continue our mission.

We are looking for young people in recovery who have been sober for one year or more and are interested in becoming a volunteer with Arise and Flourish, Inc. to speak to MCPS MS and HS students, sharing their personal story and educating them about the cycle of addiction.

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

YMCA Youth Links Mentoring is looking for adult volunteers to be positive role models for youth between the ages of 5-19. Our program is a collaboration between Montgomery County Child Welfare, the Circuit Court, Montgomery County Public Schools, the Department of Juvenile Services and the YMCA. Many of the children in our program live in foster or other out-of-home care; most are monitored by Child Welfare because of neglect, abuse or other challenges in the home.  Mentoring guarantees these young people that there is someone who cares about them, and that they are not alone in dealing with life’s day-to-day challenges.  

With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can support boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities. Volunteer mentors are required to attend informational and training sessions. Once matched with a mentee, mentors are encouraged to attend continuing education workshops and program events.

Not every neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., region offers convenient access to a brick-and-mortar food pantry or other hunger resources. To help fill this gap, the Capital Area Food Bank brings no-cost pop-up markets directly into neighborhoods where they’re needed through their Mobile Markets, which offer monthly distribution of free fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable food, and other groceries to area residents.

Mobile Markets occur on the last or second-to-last Thursday of each month at the Rockville Senior Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with food distribution, including setting up tables of produce, bagging produce, helping families select and take food to their cars, and cleaning up.

Volunteers are the heart of CaringMatters. In order to responsibly serve patients and the bereaved, every volunteer who works directly with clients must complete a three-day introductory training session, which is often described by graduates as a "transformative experience."

Seeking volunteers for our overnight weekend camp, Camp Erin, for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp offered to children ages 6 through 17 and includes age-appropriate discussions and fun-filled creative experiences designed to help children share their feelings with their peers who are in similar situations. Camp Erin is offered in partnership between CaringMatters and Bar-T, a premier childcare provider. Camp Erin Montgomery County is scheduled to be held April 24-26, 2026 at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick.

We need adult volunteers who serve in a variety of roles. We especially need volunteers who can serve as a "Big Buddy" to a child who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. A Big Buddy provides caring support to his or her assigned Little Buddy by listening to the child discuss the loss, both in the supervised group sessions and throughout the camp events.

The Reading Express opens the door for imagination and endless possibilities.  Make a video of a children's book.  Show the book, page by page, as you read it for a child.  Please check with the Chief Intern for pre-approval of the book.  These videos, upon approval, will be placed on a playlist that will be sent through QR codes on Tacy Foundation business card gifts to Children's National Hospital patients, Fisher Houses nationwide, and to Red Cross stations where children and their families are impacted by challenges of fires, floods, and other hardships.

We need volunteers that LOVE to drive and are willing to pick up dogs or cats from various locations in VA, MD, DC and deliver them to adoption events or foster homes so they can be safe and find loving adoptive families!

Many of animals are in local boardng kennels and their only chance to get adopted is to attend Saturday and Sunday afternoon adoption events -- but unless they get a volunteer driver willing to pick them up and drop them back off if not adopted -- they aren't able to attend the events.

Saturday Hours:

Drop animal off at event by 11:45am -- pick them back up at 2pm (if the animal gets adopted we call you!)

You choose when you are available and which locations you are willing to drive to!  We send weekly emails with which dogs and cats we need help driving and where they are located and you just respond if you are available!  Volunteer hours will be signed off for you and your mileage and gas are tax deductible!

Cats come in travel crates and you can borrow travel crates from us for dogs if you want or you can use their leash to tether them to a headrest in your car!

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

We are currently accepting volunteers for this summers program which starts in June of 2026. More details to follow.

Help teachers and support children throughout the day. This may include setting up and cleaning up activities, assisting before and after water play, helping with transitions, and supporting camp-wide events. Always follow the teachers’ lead—if you’re unsure, ask. Be kind, calm, and helpful. Phones should stay out of sight.

Please stay actively involved with the children. Sitting off to the side is discouraged. You can read stories, play with children, help during outdoor time, and assist teachers as needed. Weekly assignments will be given on your first day.

We work with children ages 2–5. Interact in age-appropriate ways and help keep children safe at all times. Maintain respectful physical boundaries—do not pick up children, carry them, or have them sit on your lap. You will never be asked to change diapers or clothes.

Camp runs 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please arrive by 9:00 AM for a brief meeting.

The Shelter Resident Transition (SRT) Service Associate (SA) is an operational position and is assigned temporarily, typically on level 4 and above disaster relief operations (DROs). SRT Caseworkers work with shelter residents to understand their resources and transition roadblocks to help households create an individualized action plan so that they can transition from the shelter to a more sustainable living solution. CCACC Academy is looking for volunteers to assist with our day camps for the Spring 2026 semester. Student volunteers can earn SSL hours through this program and gain valuable experience supporting their local community.

Volunteers will be responsible for check-in/check-out, helping with student transportation to and from different activities, and assisting with program logistics. The camp will run from 9 am to 6 pm, and volunteers can select a shift time that works best for them.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
