NEXT EDUCATION is seeking high school student volunteers to serve as mentors and guest speakers for younger students through our online Student Mentor Program.

Volunteer mentors will share their firsthand experiences with school clubs, extracurricular activities, academic competitions, leadership opportunities, community service, research, summer programs, and other educational enrichment activities. The goal is to help younger students better understand the opportunities available to them and make informed choices about activities that match their interests and goals.

Volunteer mentors may:

Sessions will be conducted online and coordinated by NEXT EDUCATION. Student volunteers will receive hour-for-hour SSL credit for the time they are actively providing volunteer service during live virtual sessions under the direct supervision of an adult NEXT EDUCATION nonprofit representative. NEXT EDUCATION will maintain attendance and service records and verify eligible service hours. SSL hours will not be awarded based solely on student self-reported logs.

We welcome responsible high school students who have meaningful experience in one or more extracurricular or educational activities and are interested in helping younger students learn from their experiences.

Possible presentation topics include Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, robotics, debate, academic competitions, research, volunteering, leadership, school clubs, arts and music, summer programs, and other educational or extracurricular activities.

Only students serving as approved volunteer mentors or guest speakers may earn eligible MCPS SSL hours. Students attending the program as participants do not earn SSL hours.

Interested students should first respond to this opportunity through the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and then complete the NEXT EDUCATION Student Mentor Program Volunteer Mentor Application.

In the application, students will provide basic contact information and briefly describe the extracurricular activity, academic program, competition, research, leadership, service, or other educational experience they would like to share with younger students.

NEXT EDUCATION will review applications and contact selected volunteers using the personal/private email address provided in the application. Parent/guardian permission must be received before a student participates in a live virtual mentoring session.

NEXT EDUCATION will coordinate approved volunteers, session scheduling, adult supervision, attendance, and verification of eligible SSL service hours.

Future Link students are first-generation to college, low income, ages 18-25 and are working towards a brighter future. Our students are resilient, insightful, and motivated, and though the barriers they face threaten derailment, mentors help students process complex issues, identify solutions, and develop and implement plans so that they may realize their fullest potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused even greater disadvantages to our already marginalized student population, which is why our students need additional support to help navigate challenges as they attend Montgomery College, a vocational training program, work full-time, or choose to re-access their education plan.

Students enter the Future Link program through a 15-week Self-Advocacy and Career Development Seminar, after which they are matched with a mentor.  

Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on:

Mentors become the regular point of contact with the student and the Future Link staff. In addition, Future Link provides resources as needed to support the student and mentor. For instance, if the student needs to create a budget or a LinkedIn profile and that is not the mentor's strength, a different volunteer will work with the student in that area.

Mentors attend two training sessions and a one-on-one meeting with staff before meeting their mentee. Continuous support is provided once matched with a mentee. We request an initial one-year commitment with an option to continue beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland and have at least five years’ work experience in their career field.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.   

Many middle schools seek high school volunteers to assist with their Grade 6 Outdoor Education program, and the schools listed on the SY27MCPS HS Outdoor Ed Assistant Interest form have asked for assistance in identifying potential assistants to work with them during Outdoor Ed.   

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night environmental education program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program.   

There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.

High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Spring! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start September 21st and run through December 10th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by September 2nd to receive a placement or waitlist information on September 9th.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. To address the acute illiteracy crisis among early elementary school students, we are recruiting adult & high school volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with 2nd graders from October to May on Tuesday, Wednesday,  and Thursday afternoons & evenings at five locations: Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Aspen Hill, Silver Spring.  Volunteers can sign up for once or twice a week.  No prior experience is required.  Only a background check and participation in a 4-hour orientation session are required.  Tutors are at least 21 years old.  Readers are at least 16 years old.  We need both!  Help us get these kids back up to grade level!!  If you would like to sign up, go HERE.

The upcoming Back to School Block Party, hosted by Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, is scheduled for Friday, September 18th from 12:30-3PM at the BlackRock Center for the Arts.

We are planning this event in partnership with the BlackRock Center and the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, and our goal is to create a fun, safe space for Upcounty youth where they can both hang out with each other and access resources most relevant to them.

We will have food, outdoor games, a small resource fair, student performances, and much more!

Open Door Sports, a local nonprofit, is looking for middle and/or high school aged students to volunteer as peer buddies in their soccer program for students with special needs at Flora M. Singer Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD.  Peer Buddies will be partnered with a player and are asked to be a positive and encouraging friend to the student as they learn the game of soccer.  Lots of high five and positive energy!  SSL hours will be given for time spent volunteering.  No sports experience is needed. 

Sessions occur weekly from 4:00 - 5:00pm on Mondays from September 14 to October 26, 2026.

This exciting online program is designed to help high school students develop their leadership skills while learning about civic engagement. What is required to host?

Host families simply provide a safe, supportive home environment, a designated bed for the student (can share a room with a same-sex sibling close in age), and three daily meals. Families of all shapes and sizes make excellent hosts, including empty nesters, single parents, and families with young children. Above & Beyond Education provides 24/7 local coordinator support throughout the entire exchange period.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

You are welcome to participate as often as you’d like — monthly attendance is encouraged but not required.

Why It Matters

During rainstorms, discarded trash and recycling wash into storm drains and flow into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By removing litter from our neighborhood, we help prevent pollution and protect our waterways — even our drinking water. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community and environment.

5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. International Education and Civic Engagement Organization, Inc. (IECEO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving students, immigrants, newcomers, and families in Montgomery County. Big Learning® is looking for high school students to volunteer in person in our Silver Spring (Wheaton area) office. Big Learning is preapproved to offer SSL hours to students in Montgomery County Public Schools. Opportunities are available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10am to 4pm from June 23rd through August 20th. Interested students may sign up for as many shifts as they like but must sign up for at least two consecutive hours at a time.

Big Learning® provides after school programming in foreign language and science & engineering during the school year. Volunteers will help us prepare materials for fall programs by sorting, counting, and bundling materials; cutting paper and other materials to size; organizing materials; and other basic office tasks. Any student who is routinely a no-show or who is not able to consistently count the correct bundle size will be removed from the schedule after 1-2 reminders to exercise greater care.

The Big Learning® office is located in Wheaton, two blocks off the Route 9 bus stop at Arcola and Kemp Mill Road. We are not within an easy walking distance to any food options so we encourage volunteers to bring snacks or lunch if they are planning on being here for several hours. Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Summer! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start July 13th and run through August 19th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by June 27th to receive a placement or waitlist information on July 1st.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection.

We are seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators for bereavement groups! CaringMatters provides adult support groups that allow participants to meet others who are also grieving, share their stories, and learn from one another. Specialized groups include adult child loss, parent loss, sibling or friend loss, spousal loss, and suicide loss. Additional groups are formed based on community need.

All volunteers must go through our general three-day volunteer training and then a shorter additional adult bereavement training. Volunteers must also complete a background check.   

After completing both trainings, they are assigned in two-person teams to co-facilitate 1½-hours-long meetings. The frequency of meetings varies. Some groups meet during the day, but most meet on weeknights from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Currently, most of the adult support groups are meeting online via Zoom.

Are you retired from teaching and missing working with young people? Star Gazing Farm is an animal sanctuary that houses approximately 55 animals from 11 different species and offers a weekly work and learn program for students ages 12 and up.

We are looking for a seasoned educator who is interested in encouraging young people’s interest in animal care and welfare. Providing guidance and supervision is a key component of this volunteer job. 

The work the students perform includes:

·       Cleaning barns

·       Scrubbing and filling water troughs and buckets

·       Tidying the indoor small animal room (rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs)\

·       Grooming the animals

·       Assisting with animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, administering shots, hoof trimming and shearing

·       Staffing events·  

Every Saturday we allot 6 places for students to sign up to volunteer. (note: we also have occasional adults who volunteer but they generally do not work in a supervisory role). Saturday workdays run from 9am to 1pm.

These students volunteer at the farm primarily because they are animal lovers. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to have hands-on experience with both large and small animals and to exercise both their mind and their bodies in doing farm work. 

While engaging in the work itself is educational and healthy, we wish to further enrich their experience by providing both more direct supervision and weekly educational components relating to animal care and animal welfare. 

We are seeking an experienced educator who enjoys working with teens and can motivate them to go beyond just the “regular” task list. This person will act as primary supervisor for the students:

·       Making sure they understand how to use the tools available to them.

·       Checking to see that jobs are properly completed.

·       Ensuring that everyone is working safely and in a collegial manner.

·       Keeping the flow of work going yet making sure needed breaks are taken.

·       Helping students consider important questions regarding the animals they are working to help.

·       Providing a short weekly educational exercise (homework is fine!) in relation to animal care and welfare.

Other notes:

·       The supervisor is not required to perform the physical work but only to demonstrate use of tools.

·       The farm is small (4 acres) but there is a lot of walking including up and down hills in the course of a Saturday.

·       We heartily welcome retired schoolteachers and coaches.

Volunteers are the heart of CaringMatters. In order to responsibly serve patients and the bereaved, every volunteer who works directly with clients must complete a three-day introductory training session, which is often described by graduates as a "transformative experience." 

Because of the interaction volunteers have with clients, necessary background checks, paperwork and other items that must be completed before attending the New Volunteer Training.  These requirements include:

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Weekly: The Cambodian Buddhist Society Cultural Committee (CBSCC) host Sunday classes from, September to May for individuals who are interested learning the Cambodian dance, music and language. At Re’s Kids Club children 4-10 years old can join us on select Saturdays throughout the academic year to experience the magic of Camp Levine in one afternoon. This drop-off “mini-camp” gives children the chance to explore multiple art forms—including hands-on instruction with two different instruments. Pizza dinner is provided!

Re’s Kids Club is looking for three responsible, mature Teen Apprentices to join us for the afternoon! Teen Apprentices will support teachers in the classroom and help guide and encourage kids in each activity. Teen Apprentices should be available for prep and the duration of the event, from 4:00–7:30 PM.

The Patesi Foundation is seeking passionate menstrual educators, school nurses, pediatricians, and counselors to volunteer as facilitators for our Sister Moon program. Help us educate the next generation and normalize conversations about periods! Sister Moon is a first-period empowerment experience designed to equip girls ages 8-12 with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to navigate this important transition.

Volunteers will play a key role in delivering age-appropriate education and fostering a safe, stigma-free environment. Our first session will be on April 25th from 11:00 AM -12:30 PM., but we plan to have other sessions in the summer and fall. Your part will be the educational piece. That will include information on what a period is, the female anatomy, expected changes, different types of period products, and normalizing conversations about periods.

The Youth Leadership and Development Program offers teens the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of Youth Development. Program participants will learn and build on existing skills, including understanding how to support and guide younger children, developing patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence, and creating a safe, inclusive environment for the members we serve during Camp Adventure. Participants will also gain career readiness skills such as time management and professionalism, accountability, and communication.

There are several really awesome YouTube sites that provide amazing videos answering science questions and talking about the wonders of the world around us. Science is Elemental, in its work to bring science to students who might not go seek it out also wants to support their teachers, seeks to join them. We are embarking on an effort to provide fun cool videos, geared toward elementary school teachers and their students, about the science that is part of our every day world, and in our daily environments. 

If you can bring a joy for learning, a sense of humor to add a joke or two, and a willingness to write your own and critique other storyboards as we prep to make videos, this is an opportunity for you. Requirements are an interest in science, and plain English, high-clarity writing. Video experience a plus but not required. 

While this is a virtual opportunity, there may be times when you can join in the actual video filming, although it is not a requirement that you do so. Even if you wish to be present to see your storyboard come to life, there is absolutely no requirement to be on camera.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC. 

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

The Financial Empowerment Program (FEP) provides low-income individuals and families with the opportunity to work one-on-one or in group settings with trained volunteers, either as Financial Empowerment Educators or Financial Coaches.

Both roles focus on empowering clients to make informed financial decisions and progress toward self-identified goals.

--- Students will track their volunteer hours by making a copy of the following template. The document must be titled following the template - (ex: “John Smith_2021-2022 Time Collection”). On the first row list your full name. On the second row, please state if you are applying for the PVSA award.

--- After each class, document the date, the duration and the preparation time of the class. The default total class preparation time is the same as the duration of the class. (Ex. If your class is 40 minutes long, you enter 40 minutes for the class preparation). 

--- If your preparation time is more than the default time, PLE and all its staff reserve the right to view your lesson plans. After reviewing all materials you created in preparation and a possible interview, we determine if the preparation time logged is appropriate or if it should be adjusted based on length, amount, and quality of material. We generally do not award more than 2 hours of preparation time. You will retain copyright over your plans. 

--- Any orientation, training and meeting times will also be counted toward your volunteer time. Please enter the event name, date, and duration. Please be aware preparation time is not applicable to this circumstance (ex: New faculty online orientation, 4/21/2010, 1 hour). 

--- We will send certificates of verified volunteer hours and complete volunteer forms (SSL, NHS, etc.) upon request.

CCACC Academy is looking for volunteers to assist with our Summer Camp in 2026. Through this program, student volunteers can earn SSL hours and gain valuable experience supporting their local community.

Volunteers will be responsible for check-in/check-out, helping move students between activities, and assisting with program logistics. The camp will run from 9 am to 6 pm, and volunteers can select a shift time and the weeks that work best for them.

Arise and Flourish, is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance abuse prevention by sharing stories from persons in long-term recovery. Through the schools and community, we bring real life stories to our youth showing the devastation of the disease of addiction. Since 2017, Arise and Flourish has helped to bring a greater awareness of the addiction problem by visiting 490 Middle and High schools in Montgomery County, Maryland and speaking to more than 49,000 students.  We are run by volunteers who dedicate their time to visiting the schools. In order for our organization to grow and bring continued awareness to the schools and community, we need your help to continue our mission.

We are looking for young people in recovery who have been sober for one year or more and are interested in becoming a volunteer with Arise and Flourish, Inc. to speak to MCPS MS and HS students, sharing their personal story and educating them about the cycle of addiction.

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

Seeking volunteers for our overnight weekend camp, Camp Erin, for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp offered to children ages 6 through 17 and includes age-appropriate discussions and fun-filled creative experiences designed to help children share their feelings with their peers who are in similar situations. Camp Erin is offered in partnership between CaringMatters and Bar-T, a premier childcare provider. Camp Erin Montgomery County is scheduled to be held April 24-26, 2026 at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick.

We need adult volunteers who serve in a variety of roles. We especially need volunteers who can serve as a "Big Buddy" to a child who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. A Big Buddy provides caring support to his or her assigned Little Buddy by listening to the child discuss the loss, both in the supervised group sessions and throughout the camp events.

The Preparedness Division provides appropriate preparedness programming within a community to assist community members to prepare for disasters and other emergencies.  This position is responsible for the tasks involved to implement the preparedness program including: Support the annual preparedness goals, Regional Disaster Officer (RDO) objectives, and regional/chapter plan for preparedness programming through participation in meetings, projects, and local preparedness activitiesExecute assigned projects and local preparedness activities according to the activities you are trained in: Hands-Only CPR, Ready Rating or Be Red Cross Ready Presentations. Complete tasks such as implementing preparedness activities, meeting with partners to build relationships, conducting inventory, and procuring or receiving necessary preparedness supplies

CCACC Academy is one of the divisions of the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center, a non-profit educational institution, since 2021.

Small Things Matter helps food insecurity families in our community.  

Join our 2024 Backpacks and school supplies drive!

We are looking for volunteers to help us purchase backpacks and school supplies to help children in elementary school prepare for the upcoming school year.  We will also help support these students by including an inspirational message to get their school year off to a good start.  We would love to have everyone's support for this effort.

Each backpack + school supplies + inspirational note for the student) = 2 community service hours

We will award 2 hours of community service for each backpack which can be used towards:

Choose to pack either for a grade K-3rd or 4th & 5th

for grades K-3:

1) 1 brand new 17"-20" backpack
2) 1 box of crayons
3) 1 box of pencils (12 or more)
4) 2 composition notebook
5) 2 gluesticks
6) 1 scissors
7) 1 headphones (not earbuds) (Five Below)
8) 1 inspirational note preferably on an index card (use nonlined side) for the student*

*place the note in the front pouch of the backpack

for grades 4th & 5th:

3) 1 box of pencils (12 or more)

Please place all of your items in a garbage bag labelled with the number of backpack kits and the grades.  Please put all of the same types of backpacks together so that all grade K-3 are together and grades 4-5 are together.  There will be hundreds of backpacks donated and sorting them for us will help us greatly. Reach’s LOP is seeking volunteers to help school-aged children with their homework and other educational activities (under direct supervision of childcare staff). Must be 14+ years old.  There are two class sessions per year and tutors are asked to work through the whole session: Spring (March through mid-June) or Fall (September through mid-December). In person,  one or two nights each week. 

NOTE: This opportunity is approved for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

LOP volunteers serve as teacher's assistants to help English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers with large classes. We offer in-person and virtual classes. Assist individual students and student groups by leading activities, reviewing assignments, and more. Training is provided. Must be 18+ years old. Requires a background check. This is a virtual opportunity that may become an in-person opportunity during the fall semester.

We ask volunteers to serve most or all of a full session. Long sessions are Spring (March - June) and Fall (September - December). Shorter sessions with less need in Winter (January - February) and Summer (July - August). Classes are mostly two evenings each week for two hours per class period. Volunteer the same class period each week or for both class periods.

Additional notes: As most of our volunteer opportunities are with children, we require all volunteers to submit a volunteer application with references, complete a background check, participate in child safety training and program training. All these efforts are to keep our children safe. As a faith-based not-for-profit, we openly offer Christian education at our programs. It is not a requirement to subscribe to a certain faith to volunteer, but we do suggest only those comfortable with open Christian teaching to volunteer.

KindSoup

This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to join us virtually from the comfort of their kitchens.

We come together on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm via Zoom. We focus on delicious, healthy, and hearty soup and stew recipes to share with our families and community members. Soup is then donated to local food assistance providers to store in freezers. By doing so, we help to fill the critical need for food security in our community.

Sign on to our KindSoup Zoom space (Mondays at 5:00 pm ET), and our guest chef will lead us in cooking a yummy soup or stew together.
