Our Volunteers Child Advocates work one-on-one with unaccompanied migrant children to connect with them and advocate for their rights. Child Advocates meet on a weekly basis for about an hour plus travel time.

The Reading Express opens the door for imagination and endless possibilities.  Make a video of a children's book.  Show the book, page by page, as you read it for a child.  Please check with the Chief Intern for pre-approval of the book.  These videos, upon approval, will be placed on a playlist that will be sent through QR codes on Tacy Foundation business card gifts to Children's National Hospital patients, Fisher Houses nationwide, and to Red Cross stations where children and their families are impacted by challenges of fires, floods, and other hardships.  

Please join us by reading stories on a YouTube video.  Choose stories that are not copyrighted on or by writing and illustrating one of your own picture books.

Let’s Play America is a nonprofit organization based in Takoma Park, Maryland, dedicated to strengthening communities through the power of play. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteer dog and cat drivers for our rescue animals!

We need volunteers that LOVE to drive and are willing to pick up dogs or cats from various locations in VA, MD, DC and deliver them to adoption events or foster homes so they can be safe and find loving adoptive families!

Many of animals are in local boardng kennels and their only chance to get adopted is to attend Saturday and Sunday afternoon adoption events -- but unless they get a volunteer driver willing to pick them up and drop them back off if not adopted -- they aren't able to attend the events.

Saturday Hours:

Drop animal off at event by 11:45am -- pick them back up at 2pm (if the animal gets adopted we call you!)

Sunday Hours:

Drop animal off at event by 11:45am -- pick them back up at 3pm (if the animal gets adopted we call you!)

You choose when you are available and which locations you are willing to drive to!  We send weekly emails with which dogs and cats we need help driving and where they are located and you just respond if you are available!  Volunteer hours will be signed off for you and your mileage and gas are tax deductible!

Cats come in travel crates and you can borrow travel crates from us for dogs if you want or you can use their leash to tether them to a headrest in your car!

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

Currently, we accept cake donations on one Sunday a month. Our current delivery location is in Rockville near Farmland Elementary School. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CAKES DONATED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE MORE VOLUNTEERS. We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

We are currently accepting volunteers for this summers program which starts in June of 2026. More details to follow.

Help teachers and support children throughout the day. This may include setting up and cleaning up activities, assisting before and after water play, helping with transitions, and supporting camp-wide events. Always follow the teachers’ lead—if you’re unsure, ask. Be kind, calm, and helpful. Phones should stay out of sight.

Please stay actively involved with the children. Sitting off to the side is discouraged. You can read stories, play with children, help during outdoor time, and assist teachers as needed. Weekly assignments will be given on your first day.

We work with children ages 2–5. Interact in age-appropriate ways and help keep children safe at all times. Maintain respectful physical boundaries—do not pick up children, carry them, or have them sit on your lap. You will never be asked to change diapers or clothes.

Camp runs 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please arrive by 9:00 AM for a brief meeting.
Location: 8300 Meadowbrook Lane, Chevy Chase. Enter through the main entrance and go to the library.

Dress for indoor and outdoor activities. Clothes may get wet or dirty. Wear sunscreen. Bring sandals for water play.

The Shelter Resident Transition (SRT) Service Associate (SA) is an operational position and is assigned temporarily, typically on level 4 and above disaster relief operations (DROs). SRT Caseworkers work with shelter residents to understand their resources and transition roadblocks to help households create an individualized action plan so that they can transition from the shelter to a more sustainable living solution. This position supports the mission of the American Red Cross by helping individuals and households more quickly transition from a shelter, thus alleviating human suffering by shortening the time of their disaster-caused displacement and jumpstarting their longer-term recovery.

The Preparedness Division provides appropriate preparedness programming within a community to assist community members to prepare for disasters and other emergencies.  This position is responsible for the tasks involved to implement the preparedness program including: Support the annual preparedness goals, Regional Disaster Officer (RDO) objectives, and regional/chapter plan for preparedness programming through participation in meetings, projects, and local preparedness activitiesExecute assigned projects and local preparedness activities according to the activities you are trained in: Hands-Only CPR, Ready Rating or Be Red Cross Ready Presentations. MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 100+concerts by the end of 2025, involving 1.3k+ cumulative attendees and more than 500 unique student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 20 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas. You volunteer on your schedule!

Volunteers can choose to help as a driver (driving seniors to or from doctor's appointments, etc), a notetaker during medical appointments, absent owner services (such as watering plants or picking up packages) or to do light home repair tasks (such as lifting boxes, changing tall lightbulbs, etc), or provide limited technical assistance for computers and other devices. 

Our most-requested service is rides to doctor appointments during weekdays.These rides are crucial for our members and provide a way to get to know the member during conversation on the ride.

Volunteer service providers can be any age (over 18), and do not have to be seniors themselves. Although many volunteers are also members.

You choose which service requests you would like to accept - there is no requirement to take any minimum number of requests and you do what is convenient for you. Most requests are on weekdays but there is great flexibility in dates.

Volunteers fill out an application and go through a background check and a short training. Requests and communication is through email.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for vaccinated individuals to help us pack and distribute food to the families that we serve in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These staples and fresh produce help them with their food insecurity.  

Teens and Adults needed to help pack produce EVERY Friday from 7:30am-9:30am at the TPSS Coop, 201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912.  SSL hours and Community service hours awarded.

We are looking for volunteers to help us purchase backpacks and school supplies to help children in elementary school prepare for the upcoming school year.  We will also help support these students by including an inspirational message to get their school year off to a good start.  We would love to have everyone's support for this effort.

Each backpack + school supplies + inspirational note for the student) = 2 community service hours

We will award 2 hours of community service for each backpack which can be used towards:

Cleaning and disinfecting one's home is always a good practice and this is even more important in homes where a family member has coronavirus.  In some of the apartments we serve half of the residents there have at least 1 member of their household who has COVID-19.  We would love to have individuals and groups helping us put together these cleaning kits.

We will award 1 hour of community service for each kit which can be used towards:

1 cleaning care kit = 1 community service hour

All items can be purchased inexpensively from the Dollar Store/Dollar Tree.

Connect-A-Ride Travel Training workshops help seniors 50+ feel confident and comfortable taking public transportation.  The program is looking for a volunteer who is a public transportation veteran! The volunteer will be a vital contributor to this fun and informative three-hour, once-a-month program.

Tasks include registering participants, fielding questions about the Metro and Ride-On systems, assisting with fare card machines at the station, and ensuring all participants are present and accounted for during the workshop.

Training provided. Experience with public transportation is not required but would be helpful.

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

Role Overview:

The PATESI Foundation is seeking male volunteers to serve as educators and allies.  No previous experience needed. We are inviting men who believe in dignity, equity, and community support to join our Male Ally-ship Program as volunteer educators. This is an initiative designed to equip boys and men with the knowledge and confidence to support menstrual health, reduce stigma, and stand alongside peers experiencing period poverty. Menstrual health isn’t “a women’s issue”, it’s a human issue, and we need passionate male voices to help normalize the conversation, challenge stigma, and help educate the community.

Reach’s Senior Reach Program is currently seeking English and bilingual “Friendly Caller” volunteers, including Mandarin/English speakers, to make weekly phone calls to one or more senior clients. Provide a caring voice, check on their well-being, and to confirm they received and are pleased with their scheduled home care services. Skills required include patience in speaking with senior citizens and the ability to complete and email reports to the director. Volunteers and senior clients choose the standard weekly day and time that phone calls will occur. 

We are also seeking "Friendly Visitor" volunteers who will visit senior clients monthly or bimonthly for conversation, activities, or other social interaction. A criminal background check is required.   

Reach’s Mansfield Kaseman Health Clinic (the “Clinic”) is seeking MD-licensed healthcare professionals to provide the following services on a pro bono basis: 

This is a perfect opportunity for healthcare professionals who are retired or otherwise stopped working in their professional capacities but still want to use their skills to help others. We prefer Clinic volunteers to commit to a regular schedule for at least 6 months, and for at least one 3–4-hour shift per week if possible. The ability to speak Spanish is desirable but not required for physicians; however, for other healthcare personnel, the ability to speak Spanish is now required.  

This opportunity is especially good for groups, and can also be served by one or two volunteers. Assist our elderly client keep their yards and gardens in good shape through the growing season and/or when the leaves fall. Choose to volunteer on one day, raking leaves or trimming plants, or make it ongoing from Spring through Autumn or beyond by cutting grass as needed, weeding and trimming, clearing snow or fallen branches after storms.

Reach’s LOP is seeking volunteers to help school-aged children with their homework and other educational activities (under direct supervision of childcare staff). Must be 14+ years old.  There are two class sessions per year and tutors are asked to work through the whole session: Spring (March through mid-June) or Fall (September through mid-December). In person,  one or two nights each week. 

NOTE: This opportunity is approved for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

LOP volunteers serve as teacher's assistants to help English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers with large classes. We offer in-person and virtual classes. Assist individual students and student groups by leading activities, reviewing assignments, and more. Training is provided. Must be 18+ years old. Requires a background check. This is a virtual opportunity that may become an in-person opportunity during the fall semester.

We ask volunteers to serve most or all of a full session. Long sessions are Spring (March - June) and Fall (September - December). Shorter sessions with less need in Winter (January - February) and Summer (July - August). Classes are mostly two evenings each week for two hours per class period. Volunteer the same class period each week or for both class periods.

Additional notes: As most of our volunteer opportunities are with children, we require all volunteers to submit a volunteer application with references, complete a background check, participate in child safety training and program training. All these efforts are to keep our children safe. As a faith-based not-for-profit, we openly offer Christian education at our programs. Our Officers of the Day are the first to make contact with people calling for help. They work from home, using their phones. They call our voicemail system, retrieve the messages, and call people back.  (Most of our ODs protect their privacy by using *67 for these calls.) If the person requesting food assistance is in our service area, they get the information needed and pass it on to the Food Driver on duty. Financial assistace calls are passed on to the financial assistance officer (when we have the funds).  If the person is outside of our area or is requesting something we are not able to do, they refer people to other groups that might be able to help.

ODs are scheduled for the day, but they do not have to be available the whole day - they can check messages and call people back when they have the time. Messages that an OD is unable to get to are left on the voicemail system and handled by the following day's OD. Some ODs take one day a month, while others take several, depending on their availability.

Our food drivers deliver food from our pantry (located in Rockville United Methodist Church, near Rockville Town Center) to needy people in Rockville. They need to have a driver's license and the use of a car, and they need to be able to carry bags of food. When they get a call from the Officer of the Day with a request, they go to the pantry, check the client's eligibility in the records, call the client to schedule a delivery, and pack and deliver the food to the client.

Drivers can sign up for one day a month, or more, if they desire, and they can do the deliveries whenever it's convenient for them and the client (you don't have to be available the whole day). Most of our drivers do the deliveries in the afternoon/early everning. Some of our drivers work with a partner - a friend or a spouse - and some work alone. There are days that no call comes in, and sometimes there are several. If (rarely) there are too many, some can be passed on to next day's driver. If interested, email rockvillemdhelp@gmail.com.

The Washington English Center is recruiting online and in-person volunteers to teach and tutor English!

About the Washington English Center:

Since 1993, Washington English Center (WEC), a community-based program, has offered English and literacy training to low-income adult immigrants in the greater Washington area.

What our volunteers do:

Volunteers meet once a week online or in person in downtown DC for 1-3 hours a week for 11 weeks. Volunteers follow a provided syllabus and textbook and are given ongoing training. No teaching experience is required!

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once-a-week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule.

KindSoup

This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to join us virtually from the comfort of their kitchens.

We come together on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm via Zoom. We focus on delicious, healthy, and hearty soup and stew recipes to share with our families and community members. Soup is then donated to local food assistance providers to store in freezers. By doing so, we help to fill the critical need for food security in our community.

Sign on to our KindSoup Zoom space (Mondays at 5:00 pm ET), and our guest chef will lead us in cooking a yummy soup or stew together.

The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of community-based groups  of volunteers—medical and public health professional and others—who assist their  communities in activities that promote and strengthen public health, emergency response, and community resiliency. The Medical Reserve Corps supports a variety of public health services during a crisis, such as assisting with mass distribution of antibiotics or vaccines, assisting in mass sheltering, and supporting many other vital public health mission areas. Volunteers may also serve a vital role by assisting their communities with ongoing public health needs (e.g., immunizations, screenings, health and nutrition education, surveillance and disease outbreak investigations).

We are a small nonprofit seeking to expand our Board of Directors with people who share our commitment to assist low-income scholarship applicants.  We provide college education/workforce development training scholarship funds for individuals who reside in subsidized rental housing in Montgomery County, Maryland.  They are graduating high school seniors and other adults of all ages. See more information about The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program on our website at  www.berniescholarships.org.

We seek new enthusiastic Board members who have fundraising skills to help us grow our program to increase the number of award recipients and the award amount.  Would you like to connect with Montgomery County BUSINESSES and/or BANKS to encourage supporting our Montgomery County community?  You could increase our visibility!

With a short time commitment to monthly meetings, you could make a tremendous difference in the lives of graduating high school seniors and other adults (single parents, adult children, etc.) who are determined to gain higher academic goals and achieve self-sufficiency for themselves, their children and future generations.  Join our passionate group of Board members dedicated to supporting our mission!

This volunteer opportunity requires a serious commitment, as the seniors rely on us to deliver their food items on time, twice a month. Volunteers are expected to adhere to a few important guidelines to ensure smooth and respectful service. First, please call the client to confirm their availability before making a delivery. Next, ensure that you deliver the food respectfully and punctually. Finally, report back with details about the delivery, any issues encountered, and any feedback from the client. All of these details are outlined in the flyers provided.

Work with The French Heritage Association and become a volunteer during our programs and events

Our volunteers welcome participants, are people-oriented and support staff as needed during programs and events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AMONG OTHERS:

All assignments provide training, the opportunity to work with children, and to practice French language skills.

Looking for responsible teens who are able to make a minimum commitment of at least 3 hours on Saturdays during several weeks. 

Minimum age 16.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian  and must be completed outside of school hours. Help bring cheer and motivation to cancer patients by creating custom stickers with positive messages and illustrations to be used as decorations for our cancer care kits. These stickers will serve as small but impactful tokens of encouragement, designed to uplift the spirits of those undergoing treatment.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization committed to building and delivering beds to children in need — because every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Our local Montgomery chapter works year-round with volunteers and community partners to bring comfort and dignity to children across our area. We help children who’s been sleeping on the floor, on couches, or sharing overcrowded sleeping spaces.

But before we can build the beds — we need the wood.

The Opportunity – Transport Volunteer:

We’re looking for a dependable volunteer with a truck or van to assist once a month by transporting lumber from our lumber partner in Silver Spring to our storage/worksite in Frederick.

This role is crucial to keeping our builds running on schedule — because no wood means no beds.
