Our Volunteers Child Advocates work one-on-one with unaccompanied migrant children to connect with them and advocate for their rights. Child Advocates meet on a weekly basis for about an hour plus travel time.

We have some basic requirements to volunteering with us:

The Reading Express opens the door for imagination and endless possibilities.  Make a video of a children's book.  Show the book, page by page, as you read it for a child.  Please check with the Chief Intern for pre-approval of the book.  These videos, upon approval, will be placed on a playlist that will be sent through QR codes on Tacy Foundation business card gifts to Children's National Hospital patients, Fisher Houses nationwide, and to Red Cross stations where children and their families are impacted by challenges of fires, floods, and other hardships.  

Please join us by reading stories on a YouTube video.  Choose stories that are not copyrighted on or by writing and illustrating one of your own picture books.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteer dog and cat drivers for our rescue animals!

We need volunteers that LOVE to drive and are willing to pick up dogs or cats from various locations in VA, MD, DC and deliver them to adoption events or foster homes so they can be safe and find loving adoptive families!

Many of animals are in local boardng kennels and their only chance to get adopted is to attend Saturday and Sunday afternoon adoption events -- but unless they get a volunteer driver willing to pick them up and drop them back off if not adopted -- they aren't able to attend the events.

Saturday Hours:

Drop animal off at event by 11:45am -- pick them back up at 2pm (if the animal gets adopted we call you!)

Sunday Hours:

Drop animal off at event by 11:45am -- pick them back up at 3pm (if the animal gets adopted we call you!)

You choose when you are available and which locations you are willing to drive to!  We send weekly emails with which dogs and cats we need help driving and where they are located and you just respond if you are available!  Volunteer hours will be signed off for you and your mileage and gas are tax deductible!

Cats come in travel crates and you can borrow travel crates from us for dogs if you want or you can use their leash to tether them to a headrest in your car!

Who We Are

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

What Volunteers Do

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

You must SIGN-UP for our Newsletter in order to receive the Google Form to sign-up to bake cakes. To subscribe, go to https://www.bc4f.org/newsletter. DO NOT USE an MCPS email address as all external emails are blocked. Once a month, you will receive information about delivery dates, delivery address, and delivery times. Currently, we accept cake donations on one Sunday a month. Our current delivery location is in Rockville near Farmland Elementary School. The Google Form is included in the monthly Newsletter so that you can sign-up with the number of cakes you would like to donate. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CAKES DONATED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE MORE VOLUNTEERS. The SSL form is provided at the time/date of cake delivery as long as the cake(s) meet donation requirements. SSL hours are awarded as follows:

WeAchieve is a not-for-profit service provider, founded in 1948.  We support individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities and their families.  We assist individuals in finding and keeping employment in the community, living independently as possible with a wide range of staff support options, nursing case management, and exploring and participating as fully as desired in their communities.  We are seeking volunteers and groups who are interested in joining us in our mission.

Activities and potential projects include art, crafting, job coaching, providing

one-on-one companionship, home renovation, gardening, music

movement, exercise, travel, cooking and more!  We welcome

any time commitment and look forward to growing and engaging

the WeAchieve community through meaningful relationships.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers who LOVE CATS to go to various Petsmart locations and care for our cats that live there while waiting to be adopted!  Our cats are currently housed in 3 locations:  Largo Petsmart (10464 Campus Way S, Largo, MD 20774), Oxon Hill Petsmart (6005 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745) and Rockville Petsmart (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895)

We are looking for volunteers to go once a week and help maintain the cleanliness of the cat's condos in the cat centers.  This includes scooping their litter box (or a full litter box change if needed), using the provided cleaners to sweep out and clean the condos to keep them sanitary, change out any dirty beds and toys with new fresh ones,  making sure that they have fresh water and clean bowls and general just tidying up.  It is really important that the cats are kept clean to prevent them getting sick. We also want volunteers to spend time playing with the cats and kittens so they get well socialized and handled routinely.  After your visit we ask for a visit report letting us know how the cat(s) are doing, any observations on their personality, and your interactions with them. Pictures/videos are great too! 

The available hours are 9 am - 9 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 10 am - 7 pm on Sundays for Petsmart Locations. There isn't an hour requirement for this volunteer opportunity: we encourage people to sign up on a recurring basis ideally once a week.

Who We Are:

MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 100+concerts by the end of 2025, involving 1.3k+ cumulative attendees and more than 500 unique student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 20 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

MusicAid is proud to be recognized by the Montgomery County Board of Education. The certificate states: “In recognition of your outstanding dedication to expanding musical opportunities for students and enriching our communities through education, service, and performances.” Signed by Julie Yang, President of the Board of Education on December 6, 2025, highlighting MusicAid’s impact in the community.

What We Need:

We are actively recruiting talented musicians from K-12 to join our mission. MusicAid hosts biweekly or monthly concerts at various assisted living facilities near Potomac and Arlington, Join MusicAid today and earn up to 4 SSL hours for contributing to our concert performances! SSL hours vary based on your performance duration and the length of the concert.

We appreciate all types of performances, including but not limited to instrument playing, singing, dancing, talk shows, comedy acts, poetry readings, and more. Whether you're a solo act, duo, trio, or group, you're invited to perform.

What We Provide at the Facility:

We offer the following equipment at the facility: a piano, a music stand, and a Bluetooth speaker. A Microphone will also be provided for singing performance.

We will award 1 hour of community service for each kit donated which can be used towards:

Small Things Matter's helps those in need by providing them with food, literacy, and general support.

We are looking for volunteers to help us put together cleaning care kits to share with the those in need in our community. 

Cleaning and disinfecting one's home is always a good practice and this is even more important in homes where a family member has coronavirus.  In some of the apartments we serve half of the residents there have at least 1 member of their household who has COVID-19.  We would love to have individuals and groups helping us put together these cleaning kits.

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours. See guidelines for agencies on how virtual opportunities may be considered for SSL.

We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

We will award 1 hour of community service for each kit which can be used towards:

The National Honor Society (https://www.nhs.us/) President's Volunteer Service Award (https://presidentialserviceawards.gov/) Community service for private schools Community service for college Court ordered service

1 cleaning care kit = 1 community service hour

All items can be purchased inexpensively from the Dollar Store/Dollar Tree.

Each kit must contain 4 of 6 items listed below (each item in the kit must be different/ no duplicates):

- bleach (Clorox or similar) - laundry detergent - dishwashing soap (please tape the top down so that it can't open) - multipurpose disinfectant cleaner (pinesol/lysol or similar) - scouring powder (comet or similar) - liquid hand soap 

PLUS 2 sponges or a roll of paper towels

AND a kind note

All items must be placed in double bagged plastic bags and placed inside a paper box so that boxes can be stacked on top of one another.

Instructions: 

-Please document your work by taking an action shot photo of them being assembled and a group shot of the finished package once you've finished 

-Purchase the cleaning supplies and make a nice handmade note

-Place the items in a clean plastic bag (please double bag) making sure that all the items are standing upright to avoid spilling.

-Make a log by writing down the number of kits made, along with your name and date and have your parent initial it

-Submit the log and your photos, etc via the link below

Virtual Event Volunteer As a virtual event volunteer, you will collaborate with our team

to plan and support a virtual event designed to meet a community need. Examples of events may include an art night, game night, or other creative programming that fosters connection and engagement.

Volunteers will earn 3 SSL hours for each event they plan and implement with direct supervision provided by an adult representative of our organization. Events will be eligible for SSL credit only after a review by a member 18+ after to ensure it meets guidelines. Guidelines include event is well planned out, and event relates to the mission of the organization. All events will be reviews in the event channel. 


Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

Virtual Event Volunteer As a virtual event volunteer, you will collaborate with our team

to plan and support a virtual event designed to meet a community need. Examples of events may include an art night, game night, or other creative programming that fosters connection and engagement.

Volunteers will earn 3 SSL hours for each event they plan and implement with direct supervision provided by an adult representative of our organization. Events will be eligible for SSL credit only after a review by a member 18+ after to ensure it meets guidelines. Guidelines include event is well planned out, and event relates to the mission of the organization. All events will be reviews in the event channel. 


Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

How to Get Started

Brainstorm and create designs that incorporate positive messages, such as "You Are Strong," "Keep Fighting," and "Stay Positive," alongside uplifting illustrations like sunflowers, clouds, ocean themes, and smiling faces.  Please NO "get well soon", "keep growing", "shine", or other messages that may unintentionally cause discomfort. As with our other service projects, you are welcome to work from the comfort of your home, with your colleagues at the office, or with your friends at school! Use digital and/or traditional art techniques to draw and create the designs. If digital, the stickers should be printed on high-quality adhesive paper or using the tutorials below. For those seeking service hours, designs may only be repeated for hand-drawn stickers, not digital designs. Simple vs. complex: We defer to YOUR judgment, as it depends on how long it takes for you to design and cut out a sticker. If it takes about 20 minutes per sticker, due to thoughtful hand-drawn designs, coloring, text, shape, etc., then we would consider it complex. If it only takes about 10 minutes per sticker, with a smiley and text, for example, then that would be considered simple. Limits: We really hope for volunteers to focus less on quantity and more on quality, so while there is no limit, we do highly encourage quality to show patients we care with thoughtful artwork and text. Using pre-cut sticker labels: Creative designs and messages on pre-cut sticker labels may be eligible for 1 service hour per 10 designs. Using wax paper: We are no longer accepting stickers made on wax/parchment paper. Please consider using inexpensive sticker paper options below, such as these sticker sheets that can be cut into any shape and peeled more easily. Once completed, follow the submission steps here. They will then be distributed to cancer patients in hospitals, treatment centers, and support groups through Kits to Heart's cancer care kits.

If it takes about 20 minutes per sticker, due to thoughtful hand-drawn designs, coloring, text, shape, etc., then we would consider it complex. If it only takes about 10 minutes per sticker, with a smiley and text, for example, then that would be considered simple. Limits: We really hope for volunteers to focus less on quantity and more on quality, so while there is no limit, we do highly encourage quality to show patients we care with thoughtful artwork and text. Using pre-cut sticker labels: Creative designs and messages on pre-cut sticker labels may be eligible for 1 service hour per 10 designs. Using wax paper: We are no longer accepting stickers made on wax/parchment paper. Please consider using inexpensive sticker paper options below, such as these sticker sheets that can be cut into any shape and peeled more easily. Once completed, follow the submission steps here. They will then be distributed to cancer patients in hospitals, treatment centers, and support groups through Kits to Heart's cancer care kits.

Please follow these steps to ensure your work is received!

For Students: If you are a student seeking SSL hours, you must make at least 6 simple stickers OR 3 complex stickers for quality completion of the service project. For every 6 simple stickers OR 3 complex stickers made and submitted, students may earn 1 SSL hour. There is no maximum number of hours for this activity.

Safety First

Safety is paramount. Please follow these precautions:
• Do not prepare and drop off items if anyone in your home is sick.
• While packaging and dropping off items, wash your hands and avoid touching your face.
• During drop-off, please leave items at the front door.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

The Opportunity – Transport Volunteer:

We’re looking for a dependable volunteer with a truck or van to assist once a month by transporting lumber from our lumber partner in Silver Spring to our storage/worksite in Frederick.

This role is crucial to keeping our builds running on schedule — because no wood means no beds.

What You'll Do:

Pick up a pre-set load of lumber from a supplier in Silver Spring, assist the team with loading.Transport and unload the lumber at our Frederick Build Warehouse.Preferred time: Friday afternoons (once per month) ⏱Time commitment: approx. 3–4 hours/month
