The Latino Student Fund's Tutoring Program provides free support and academic assistance to Washington metropolitan area students to ensure their academic success. We offer individualized tutoring to support students from PreK through 12th grade in math and reading.


We are looking for volunteers ages 14 and up interested in working one-on-one with students on Saturday mornings from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM in Downtown Silver Spring (8700 Georgia Ave, Suite #500).

The nonprofit organization Science is Elemental (SIE) is looking for scientists eager to support elementary school teachers and spend a few hours a month (flexibly) answering teachers’ questions about their science curriculum. If desired (but not essential for volunteering), there will also be opportunities to speak (virtually or in-person) about your science or career to elementary school students. While some elementary school teachers are well-grounded in the sciences, most are not, as being so is not a requirement for a degree in elementary education, nor for being hired in most school systems. As a result, they may need science support from others to fully understand the material they are teaching.

 

The goal of this project is to provide the scientific background teachers want to know so that they can better serve their students. We need some scientists now, to complete our testing, and then more once the school year starts. Once the network is live, we plan to provide the answers to teachers’ questions within one hour.

 

Volunteers will use Slack to receive and answer questions. It is expected that each volunteer monitor Slack, when they have time, for questions being asked. In this manner, volunteers only provide their services when it is convenient for them to do so. Our goal is to have a sufficiently large network of scientist volunteers to allow coverage of the Slack channel for the entire day, and especially during and immediately after school hours.

 

The qualifications for this volunteer role are:

 

1)      At least three years working in any science (to include computer and data sciences, and engineering fields), or three years graduate study in such fields.

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

Volunteers may serve as:

Election Judges - facilitating the election in a polling place during Early Voting or on Election DayDrop Box Attendants – retrieving ballots from designated drop boxesCanvassers – assisting in counting voted ballotsNursing Home Program – assisting voters in designated nursing homes

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

* Election Workers who previously served as an election judge in 2022 election cycle or earlier will receive a $100.00 bonus for each full Election Day and/or each Early Voting Day or $50.00 for each part-day served during the 2024 elections.

Stipend Vs. Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours

For your service, you may either earn a stipend (payment) or Student Service-Learning (SSL) Hours. Your social security number must be submitted to receive stipend (payment). This can be provided once application has been processed and submitted in EJ Connection.  If you wish to receive SSL hours for your service, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number. SSL hours and applicable form will be emailed within six weeks after the election. The SSL form must be submitted to the corresponding MCPS SSL Coordinator (MCPS listor staff.

Singer Elementary in Silver Spring runs from 5:30 - 6:30pm every Tuesday evening beginning September 9th and ending on October 28th. No practice on September 23rd

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Little Bennett Campground is hosting a spooky Haunted Trail and Magic Pumpkin Patch this Fall, and needs volunteers to help it be the spookiest place in the woods!

We have 4 ways you can help us! See choices below, and choose the shift(s) that work best for you.

1. Decorate Camp Store, Booth & Trail (Sept. 22, 23, 24, Mon./Tues./Weds. 3-6pm.) Help us decorate for Halloween in the building, around the campground, and on the haunted trail.

2. Haunted Trail Set Up (Sept. 30, October 1 & 2 Tues./Weds./Thurs. 3-6pm.)

Help us set up the stations on the haunted trail. Could include carrying supplies, setting up tents, hanging props in trees, and staging scenes.

3. Magic Pumpkin Patch Guide (Friday Nights Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and Oct 31. 5-8pm.) Set up and monitor the Magic Pumpkin Patch by greeting campers, helping children decorate seed markers, and guiding them through "planting" their magic seeds. At end of night, move pumpkins to the Magic Pumpkin Patch.



4. Haunted Trail
Volunteers (Saturday Nights, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Nov 1) (6-9pm) Dress up and take your place on the Haunted Trail to deliver jump scares or support the behind-the-scenes team with fog machines, sound effects, and more.

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 90 concerts by the Aug, 2025, involving more than 400 student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 10 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Connie Morella Library in Bethesda, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health. In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead.

The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

Service hours are defined as the time volunteers spend completing tasks assigned by their director in furthering the mission of Elevate the Future Maryland—working to achieve business and STEM literacy for all. Service hours are tracked by our directors, who review the submitted evidence, maintain a log, verify student service on MCPS Form 560-51 (Student Service Learning Activity Verification)

 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students will not be asked to share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not be shared.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students will not be asked to share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not be shared.

The Food Council annually selects candidates to serve two-year terms on the 25-Member Montgomery County Food Council and/or its 9-Member Board of Directors.

What skills are needed? Judges are needed to evaluate students' written work, in the form of short story, poetry, or essay based on a provided rubric. Judges should be compassionate and open-minded readers with a firm grasp of grammar and appreciation for diversity in literature. Applicants should feel comfortable using technology for submitting scores and navigating the FOLMC website.


Where does this take place? From the comfort of your home. Judges will download a .pdf file of entries and upload scores via the FOLMC website.


What’s the timeline in 2025/6? Judges will be provided one grade of student entries on or about February 26th with scores being due to FOLMC by March 18th. If there is a tie, judges may be asked to read submissions from a different grade level to break the tie. Those entries would be provided by March 21st with scores being due March 27th. Each grade level is approximately 50 entries, including all three genres. Due to the varied length of entries it is impossible to determine the exact amount of time needed to read, judge, and submit scores, however, judges have frequently indicated they had enough time to complete all tasks and enjoyed the program immensely. Dates are approximate and can change based on current events.


What are judges provided? Each judge is provided a password protected site at folmc.org with the scoring rubric, scoring grid, and student entries. Once judging is over, judges will be invited to attend the awards ceremony featuring a notable author and gifted a copy of the published anthology.  


Are previous judges permitted to participate again? Yes, we encourage previous judges to re-apply to participate.

Students enter the Future Link program through a 15-week Self-Advocacy and Career Development Seminar, after which they are matched with a mentor.

Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on:

Soft skills such as time management, communication, and asking for help. Evaluating career paths and required education or training requirements. Preparing transfer applications and researching and applying for scholarships. Creating a resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. Navigating the complexities of higher education and office/company cultures. Critically thinking through decisions and brainstorming outcomes. Working through external factors (family pressures, work commitments, mental health).

Mentors become the regular point of contact with the student and the Future Link staff. In addition, Future Link provides resources as needed to support the student and mentor. For instance, if the student needs to create a budget or a LinkedIn profile and that is not the mentor's strength, a different volunteer will work with the student in that area.

Mentors attend two training sessions and a one-on-one meeting with staff before meeting their mentee. Continuous support is provided once matched with a mentee. We request an initial one-year commitment with an option to continue beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland and have at least five years’ work experience in their career field.

Harvest Intercontinental Church in Olney, Maryland is one of the county’s eight Consolidated Hubs providing food and other vital services to residents in need. Help is needed on Saturdays mornings between 8am – 11am to support the drive-thru pickup service. Register to volunteer at the main page sign up genius link: 

Tasks may include setting up the distribution site, distributing groceries, collecting information (Zip Codes, etc.), signing in/signing out site volunteers. The hub volunteer coordinator will contact each person to provide additional information. Specific instructions will be given when you arrive at the distribution site. Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move minimum of 15 pounds repeatedly.

Harvest Mid-County Hub food Protocol: All volunteers are required to have their masks on before entering the building and have their temperature check upon arrival. Gloves will be provided to wear at all times while serving.

Volunteers may park between the D and E Lots and use the entrance doors that are next to the small traffic circle at the right side of the building.

Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Fridays sorting and packing supplies in preparation for Saturday distribution.  This is a great opportunity for those who can only serve in the evening hours!   

Help is needed on Fridays between 2pm – 6pm to  sort supplies and bag food for Saturday pickup. Tasks may include moving food from pallet to shelves/bags, setting up tables, signing in/signing out site volunteers.  Note this is an IN-PERSON activity held indoors.

The hub volunteer coordinator will contact each person to provide additional information. Specific instructions will be given when you arrive at the distribution site. Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move minimum of 10-15 pounds repeatedly.

Harvest Mid-County Hub Food Program Protocol: All volunteers are required to have their masks on before entering the building and will have their temperature check upon arrival. Gloves will be provided to wear at all times while serving.

Volunteers may park between the D and E Lots and use the entrance doors that are next to the small traffic circle at the right side of the building.
