The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

Walking a dog is an invaluable contribution to our rescue and makes a HUGE difference for both our team and, most importantly, the dogs. Regular walks provide them with much-needed exercise, mental stimulation, and one-on-one human interaction, all of which help keep them happy, healthy, and engaged. Even a simple sniff walk can mean the world to them!

We are seeking compassionate and friendly volunteers to help support activities and provide companionship to our residents in our assisted living community. Volunteers play an important role in bringing joy, connection, and meaningful engagement to the lives of the seniors we serve.

This 5 day program ( July 27 - 31, 2026) is open to the public (age 3-5th grade) of the greater Olney area. Teen volunteers (6-12th grade) will assist with the secular nonreligious aspects of the program. They will assist to decorate various classrooms & hallways, using a ‘tropical’ theme. They will supervise crews of 5-6 children and lead them from several activity sites in the building. They will assist in craft & snack preparation daily. They will also assist the children in playing games & music participation. At the end of the week, teens are needed to remove decorations & clean up the building. Student volunteers will not assist with any religious aspects of the program.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) organizes fun events for residents to relax and get to know each other.

On Saturday, June 6, 2-4pm, we're hosting a caregiver appreciation event for all ages at Allium Place in Silver Spring. There will be food, games and crafts so children and adults can have fun, relax and be together.

Join Rockville Weed Warrior Leaders for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday. This workday will focus on cutting non-native invasive plants around the park and creek. If there are enough volunteers, there is also the possibility to help with careful weeding in the native pollinator garden. Space is limited and registration is required. Please only respond to this opportunity if you plan to attend the event. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. This Student Service Learning (SSL) opportunity is approved for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) middle and high school students.

SSL Hours for Social Media Support
Middle and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by reviewing, finalizing, and creating content for our social media platforms, including TikTok ,Instagram and Facebook.

SSL Hour Equivalency:

-          Volunteers creating videos will receive SSL hours based on the actual amount of time spent producing the video, upon review and approval by Grace Helping Hands.

-          Volunteers reviewing videos will receive 1 SSL hour for every three (3) social media content pieces reviewed and finalized (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook posts), upon review and approval by Grace Helping Hands.

-          All submitted work must meet Grace Helping Hands content standards and receive approval before SSL hours are awarded.

Review content created by the social media team, including:
- Titles and descriptions.

Join our online KindSoup For Students!

Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Lemony Carrot and Cauliflower Soup led by an experienced KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, June 21st from 5pm-6pm.

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours. 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

Volunteers are invited to knit, sew or crochet at home to make blankets as gifts for hospitalized children. Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Meetings are held in the lower level of the University of Maryland extension office, Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park, 18410 Muncaster Road, Derwood.

The UpCounty Hub is serving families in need. We provide fresh produce, shelf stable foods, emergency and hygiene items, activity kits for kids and social services for the families that we serve.

We are in need of volunteers to assist in our monthly diaper distribution/pantry at The Upcounty Hub. Volunteers' duties vary from handing out diapers to families with appointments to assisting in the food pantry. 

We have added a Tuesday shift (am and pm) to assist our Social Services Team with clients using the pantry. Diapers will NOT be distributed on Tuesday, this is a pantry only volunteer opportunity.

 Please arrive five to ten minutes prior to start time to check in.

Help us with our awesome Summer Concert Series!

Every Thursday in the summer, we host an outstanding music concert in our outdoor covered Bumper Car Pavilion. We need help setting up the seating, being a presence at the information table, and putting away the seating after each concert. Concerts run 7:30pm to 8:30pm and the full time commitment for volunteering is from 6:30pm to 9pm. SSL hours are available. Opportunity suitable for ages 16 through adult.

Come help us celebrate the 4th of July in Takoma Park!

Small Things Matter will be participating in Takoma Park's Annual 4th of July Parade again this July.  It is a big and wonderful event with lots of different groups marching.  We are looking for energetic teen =and= adult volunteers who can help us give out fruit to the crowds as we walk throughout Takoma Park.  We are trying to raise awareness about our Kokua Foods Program which provides 7000+ food insecure individuals with access to fresh fruits and vegetables as well as culturally important foods such as masa, rice, and beans.

Volunteers will earn 4 hours of community service hours.  

Duties include:

Volunteers will be provided with a free tee, hat, and water bottle.  Please DO NOT bring a backpack.

Volunteer Opportunity – Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival Football Clinic

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up both sides of the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before 8/30/2026 will be reviewed and sent out on 9/1/2026

SSL hours for submissions received on or after 9/1/2026 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

Our goal is to support and spotlight local talent while creating meaningful opportunities for vendors and partners, and memorable gatherings that invite the community to shop local, connect, and celebrate all that Clarksburg has to offer.

Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control. (Double Hours are available for individuals participating in the Maryland Community Service Program when volunteering for the Traffic Volunteer position.) (THE DOUBLE IS NOT FOR SSL)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

To find our warehouse entrance, look for signs for "Dogtopia" and then keep walking; our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. When you arrive please walk to the outdoor tables and ask for a staff person, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. The UpCounty Hub provides fresh produce, shelf stable foods, hygiene items, and some social services for families in our community that are in need.

Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter. 

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources. 

By registering, you acknowledge that volunteering may involve physical activity, handling sharp or heavy objects, and contact with unfamiliar persons or animals. Please exercise reasonable care and understand you assume any personal risk of injury or property damage.

Looking for volunteers to work with children ages 5-12 years old in an after school child care setting. Activities could include: playing games, reading stories, assisting with art projects, helping with homework, etc. We accept only middle school and high school students. A 15 minute orientation is required.

Volunteers will assist in distributing boxes of food, including fruit, vegetables and canned goods, to low-income senior citizens at AHC's Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building located in Silver Spring. Volunteers will bring food inside building to 2nd floor lobby using carts & elevators. Residents will pick up food boxes.

Volunteers should be friendly and reliable, able to work both independently and in a small group. Food boxes weigh between 20-40 pounds, so volunteers must be able to lift that amount onto tables & carts.

A guided, nature-based art experience focused on exploration and fun

For SSL hours, join us in setting up and facilitating a free, calm, welcoming workshop that uses nature-inspired artmaking to create space for connection, conversation, and shared prescence. You will help to experiment, combine materials, and follow curiosity rather than instructions. Assist them in discovering native plants and animals, rain gardens, or neighborhood green spaces, and create unique line drawings that can be used as coloring pages or shared with others. Premade coloring pages will also be available for attendees who do not want to paint.

You will be working with adults for this volunteer opportunity since this workshop will be geared towards adults aged 19+.

For students looking to earn SSL hours, you will be supporting the workshop facilitators in setting up, leading, and post workshop cleaning.

No prior art experience is required, and all materials are provided.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Mobile FARMacy Markets! Community FarmShare runs mobile FARMacy markets at 9 different locations throughout Montgomery County from June to November. In 2026 we have 4 markets in Silver Spring, 2 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Germantown, 1 in Montgomery Village, and 1 in Rockville. ArtUnity Youth hosts an ongoing, supervised in-person service program where students create encouragement cards for hospital patients. Each month features a different positive theme to guide artwork/card, artworks, and messages: March: You Are Not Alone, April: Hope and Strength, May: One Day at a Time, June: Bright Days Ahead, July: Courage in Every Step, August: Keep Going. Volunteers design hospital-appropriate cards, write supportive messages, and help package donations for healthcare partners. All art supplies are provided. Sessions are held in the Collaboration Room on the second floor at Rockville Memorial Library on Fridays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Please look for a BIG Teddy Bear wearing an ArtUnity Youth T-shirt. Students may attend for 1–2 hours within this time window. Registration is required. Students earn 1 SSL hour per 60 minutes of verified participation (maximum 2 hours per session), based on supervisor attendance. All artwork must meet program guidelines and is reviewed and approved on-site by the ArtUnity Youth program manager before SSL hours are verified.

Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

Opportunity to help during Annual Turkish Festival in DC. 

The Annual Turkish Festival is a long-standing community event, and this year we will be celebrating its 24th year. It is one of the largest cultural festivals in Washington, DC. Each year, the festival is supported by more than 100 volunteers, including a core group of approximately 60–70 returning volunteers.

The festival runs from early morning through the evening. The opportunity is mostly structured around 4-hour shifts. Some volunteer for one shift, while others may volunteer for two shifts.

Student volunteers assist with a variety of festival-related service activities, including children’s tent activities, tea and coffee service, guest hospitality, volunteer check-in, stage area support, setup, breakdown, arranging tables and chairs, and general festival logistics.

At Grace Helping Hands, volunteers are the heart of our mission. We are a grassroots nonprofit organization (501(c)(3)) dedicated to providing toiletry kits, including essential feminine hygiene products, to homeless women and children.

Kit Assembly Details:
We will be assembling toiletry kits on a monthly basis, providing an ongoing opportunity for volunteers to contribute to our cause. Each kit includes carefully selected items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and other personal care essentials.

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

At Re’s Kids Club children 4-10 years old can join us on select Saturdays throughout the academic year to experience the magic of Camp Levine in one afternoon. This drop-off “mini-camp” gives children the chance to explore multiple art forms—including hands-on instruction with two different instruments. Pizza dinner is provided!

Re’s Kids Club is looking for three responsible, mature Teen Apprentices to join us for the afternoon! Teen Apprentices will support teachers in the classroom and help guide and encourage kids in each activity. Teen Apprentices should be available for prep and the duration of the event, from 4:00–7:30 PM.

We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

We are currently accepting volunteers for this summers program which starts in June of 2026. More details to follow.

Help teachers and support children throughout the day. This may include setting up and cleaning up activities, assisting before and after water play, helping with transitions, and supporting camp-wide events. Always follow the teachers’ lead—if you’re unsure, ask. Be kind, calm, and helpful. Phones should stay out of sight.

Please stay actively involved with the children. Sitting off to the side is discouraged. You can read stories, play with children, help during outdoor time, and assist teachers as needed. Weekly assignments will be given on your first day.

We work with children ages 2–5. Interact in age-appropriate ways and help keep children safe at all times. Maintain respectful physical boundaries—do not pick up children, carry them, or have them sit on your lap. You will never be asked to change diapers or clothes.

Camp runs 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please arrive by 9:00 AM for a brief meeting.
Location: 8300 Meadowbrook Lane, Chevy Chase. Enter through the main entrance and go to the library.

Dress for indoor and outdoor activities. Clothes may get wet or dirty. Wear sunscreen. Bring sandals for water play.

You may eat with the children from 12:30–1:00 PM. Bring nut-free, vegetarian or pescatarian food (fish okay; no shellfish). Bring a water bottle.

This Transcribe-a-Thon event will focus on documents containing information about Black community members in Sandy Spring.

The Untold Stories program works with communities throughout the county to share diverse stories in parks, along trails, and online. With a focus on historical and cultural narratives, Untold Stories produces interpretive material (e.g. signage, audio content, digital maps) and public programs.

Help is needed on Fridays between 3:30pm – 6pm to  sort supplies and bag food for Saturday pickup. Tasks may include moving food from pallet to shelves/bags, setting up tables, signing in/signing out site volunteers.  Note this is an IN-PERSON activity held indoors.

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org under Volunteer/FAQ. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. The Gaithersburg Library is looking for teen volunteers for our yearly Summer Reading Program. Volunteers are vital to making sure we have a superb summer full of fun opportunities for all ages! 

When:

There are two types of volunteer options this summer.

Desk Volunteer: Two-hour hour shifts, available seven days a week. You will sit at a table in the Children's Area of the library and help children and teens sign up for summer reading, hand out prizes, and answer questions about the Summer Reading Challenge.

Program Volunteer: Three-hour shifts, available Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Program volunteers will assist with the running of programs for children-teens. 'Programs' are library events that are free and open to the public; they are organized and run by library staff and can range from playing with Legos and doing crafts to movie showings and live performances. Volunteering in this position includes helping to set-up, clean-up, and interacting with the program participants.

Tracking SSL Hours

Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised. All time serve for this opportunity will be under direct supervision.

Note: This opportunity is at the discretion of the parent/guardian. All volunteers must complete the waiver prior to serving. All virtual communications and sessions will be under our supervision. If one of our supervisors is not available, the virtual session will not occur. Students personal identity including their name/email and home address will be kept confidential and not shared. Students will engage in email and phone communications only with our nonprofit supervisors. Student must also use their personal/private accounts during virtual sessions, and not their MCPS accounts. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Additionally, students cannot share photos, pictures, or videos of themselves unless we have obtained a signed form or waiver form the student's parent/guardian authorizing permission. Our organization will be responsible for posting, distributing, and circulating the created content. Lastly, we will not share any information about participants to any third parties.

The Volunteer Videographer helps capture the stories, events, and impact of our community programs primarily in Gaithersburg and Germantown areas. Your work will support outreach, documentation, fundraising, and historic preservation by creating high‑quality video content that brings our mission to life. The Youth Leadership and Development Program offers teens the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of Youth Development. Program participants will learn and build on existing skills, including understanding how to support and guide younger children, developing patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence, and creating a safe, inclusive environment for the members we serve during Camp Adventure. Participants will also gain career readiness skills such as time management and professionalism, accountability, and communication.

Qualifications/Requirements:

· Going into the 9th – 12th Grade for the 2026 - 2027 school year and between the ages of 14 and 18 years old

· Must have strong leadership skills

· Ability to demonstrate teamwork with other Junior Leaders and adult staff members

· Ability to communicate and work with ages 6yo - 13yo

· Ability to teach and lead arts, character building, education, health & wellness, leadership, recreational, and sports activities

· Ability to make smart decisions and have safe judgment

· Is willing to run, jump, play, and do a lot of physical movements

· Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, fun, have a sense of humor, patient, and willing to learn

Highly Recommended:

· Have completed a child development course

· Have experience in working with children in a large group setting

The Link Generations Teen Advisory Board Leadership Conference is Monday, June 22, 9am – 12 noon. The theme of this second annual event is Milestones Across Generations.

The purpose of the conference is to give teens the opportunity to learn about leadership skills and how to facilitate intergenerational programs. The second part of the conference will invite older adults to join the teens for intergenerational conversations, to connect with youth, and to share their expertise and words of wisdom.

We’re seeking a friendly and organized front-line team member to support our reception area. In this role, you’ll welcome and check in visitors, provide clear information, and help ensure smooth daily operations under the direction of TESS staff.
