We are seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators for bereavement groups! CaringMatters provides adult support groups that allow participants to meet others who are also grieving, share their stories, and learn from one another. Specialized groups include adult child loss, parent loss, sibling or friend loss, spousal loss, and suicide loss. Additional groups are formed based on community need.

All volunteers must go through our general three-day volunteer training and then a shorter additional adult bereavement training. Volunteers must also complete a background check.   

After completing both trainings, they are assigned in two-person teams to co-facilitate 1½-hours-long meetings. The frequency of meetings varies. Some groups meet during the day, but most meet on weeknights from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Currently, most of the adult support groups are meeting online via Zoom.

Walking a dog is an invaluable contribution to our rescue and makes a HUGE difference for both our team and, most importantly, the dogs. Regular walks provide them with much-needed exercise, mental stimulation, and one-on-one human interaction, all of which help keep them happy, healthy, and engaged. Even a simple sniff walk can mean the world to them!

We are in need of Food Runners – Individuals, families and/or groups that can transport donated, recovered food from food retail and restaurant establishments to the recipient agencies in our network.

Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

The Foundation to Fight H-ABC is seeking a volunteer Scientific Advisory Board Member to provide scientific and strategic guidance to our Board of Directors as we advance research for H-ABC (TUBB4A-related leukodystrophy), an ultra-rare neurologic disease affecting children.

This role is ideal for an experienced scientist, clinician, or translational research professional who can help our patient-led nonprofit evaluate scientific opportunities, interpret research discussions, and strengthen strategic decision-making related to therapeutic development.

Responsibilities may include:

Ideal candidates may have experience in:
Neurology, genetics, rare disease research, translational medicine, biomarkers, clinical trial design, biotechnology, drug development, regulatory science, or related scientific leadership.

Time commitment: Flexible; approximately 2–4 hours per month.

Your expertise can help guide strategic scientific decisions that may accelerate research and treatment opportunities for children living with a devastating ultra-rare neurologic disease.

Qualifications:

Our Volunteers Child Advocates work one-on-one with unaccompanied migrant children to connect with them and advocate for their rights. Child Advocates meet on a weekly basis for about an hour plus travel time.

Volunteers are invited to knit, sew or crochet at home to make blankets as gifts for hospitalized children. Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. We're looking for volunteer drivers to pick up produce bags at our FarmShare aggregation hub (220 Girard St, Gaithersburg) and deliver the bags to 6-8 families in a neighborhood community, from June to November. Each volunteer's route is the same each week, which offers volunteers the opportunity to build a sense of community with the families and the farmers. We do our best to match volunteers to nearby communities where you live in order to minimize the carbon footprint and to make the best use of your time.

This volunteer position is great for those people that like to have something on the calendar on a consistent basis. We understand that things do come up, kids get sick, and we all need time for summer vacation! For these reasons, each route will also have a pool of back-up drivers so volunteers can have some flexibility as needed.

Are you retired from teaching and missing working with young people? Star Gazing Farm is an animal sanctuary that houses approximately 55 animals from 11 different species and offers a weekly work and learn program for students ages 12 and up.

We are looking for a seasoned educator who is interested in encouraging young people’s interest in animal care and welfare. Providing guidance and supervision is a key component of this volunteer job. 

The work the students perform includes:

·       Cleaning barns

·       Scrubbing and filling water troughs and buckets

·       Tidying the indoor small animal room (rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs)\

·       Grooming the animals

·       Assisting with animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, administering shots, hoof trimming and shearing

·       Staffing events·  

Every Saturday we allot 6 places for students to sign up to volunteer. (note: we also have occasional adults who volunteer but they generally do not work in a supervisory role). Saturday workdays run from 9am to 1pm.

These students volunteer at the farm primarily because they are animal lovers. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to have hands-on experience with both large and small animals and to exercise both their mind and their bodies in doing farm work. 

While engaging in the work itself is educational and healthy, we wish to further enrich their experience by providing both more direct supervision and weekly educational components relating to animal care and animal welfare. 

We are seeking an experienced educator who enjoys working with teens and can motivate them to go beyond just the “regular” task list. This person will act as primary supervisor for the students:

·       Making sure they understand how to use the tools available to them.

·       Checking to see that jobs are properly completed.

·       Ensuring that everyone is working safely and in a collegial manner.

·       Keeping the flow of work going yet making sure needed breaks are taken.

·       Helping students consider important questions regarding the animals they are working to help.

·       Providing a short weekly educational exercise (homework is fine!) in relation to animal care and welfare.

Other notes:

·       The supervisor is not required to perform the physical work but only to demonstrate use of tools.

·       The farm is small (4 acres) but there is a lot of walking including up and down hills in the course of a Saturday.

·       We heartily welcome retired schoolteachers and coaches.

Stay Local Saturdays was created to celebrate Clarksburg’s vibrant local community by showcasing small businesses, makers, and community organizations in a welcoming, festive setting. Held on the second Saturday of each month, these themed events connect neighbors with high-quality local products, creative experiences, and family-friendly fun. Our goal is to support and spotlight local talent while creating meaningful opportunities for vendors and partners, and memorable gatherings that invite the community to shop local, connect, and celebrate all that Clarksburg has to offer.

What will I be doing? Volunteers will help create a positive and organized experience for everyone attending the event. Responsibilities may include helping with set-up and clean-up, greeting guests, assisting with activities, supporting local vendors or booths, helping families navigate the event, and making sure activity areas stay clean and welcoming. Volunteers may also help answer questions and assist event leaders throughout the day as needed.

As Director of Dance and Events for Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts & Culture, I am seeking a volunteer to come in once a week for 4 hours to assist with tasks related to our ongoing dance programs and our periodic events. The ideal candidate is someone who likes administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, and social media posting but who also would like walking around to the park venues to replenish and rearrange promotional materials. This volunteer opportunity requires a serious commitment, as the seniors rely on us to deliver their food items on time, twice a month. Volunteers are expected to adhere to a few important guidelines to ensure smooth and respectful service. First, please call the client to confirm their availability before making a delivery. Next, ensure that you deliver the food respectfully and punctually. Finally, report back with details about the delivery, any issues encountered, and any feedback from the client. WHY A Home of Their Own Animal Rescue Exists:

 We founded our rescue after working in other shelters and rescues and seeing the same heartbreaking pattern: good, well-meaning people being turned away without even a conversation. We watched great potential adopters overlooked because of outdated rules and rigid expectations, while animals sat in kennels waiting for the mythical “perfect” home. Meanwhile, those turned away often ended up at breeders — and who could blame them? They were trying to do the right thing and were told they weren’t good enough.

We realized the system was failing both people and animals, and it wasn’t really about the animals’ safety — it was about the peoples’ fears.

So we started our own rescue, one built on conversation, not judgment, and rooted in the belief that adoption should be accessible, educational, and welcoming. That shift allows us to match more animals with adopters based on genuine connection, not unrealistic perfection — saving more lives, encouraging adoption over shopping, and helping people feel seen, supported, and proud to welcome a pet into their lives.

In just a couple years as a 501(c)(3), we’ve rescued hundreds of dogs and cats from all over the country—including Puerto Rico—and placed them in loving homes that fit their needs as well as the needs of their new humans! What started as a reaction to the unnecessary gatekeeping and outdated norms in animal rescue has become a growing movement to make adoption easier, more inclusive, flexible, and rooted in empathy and education.

We’ve built a strong and expanding network of passionate volunteers, partnered with local vets and businesses, and made a real mark in the community. Our goals go beyond our own rescue: we aim to shift the animal welfare field itself—advocating for nonjudgmental conversations, educating the community about animal welfare topics such as vetting and training/animal behavior, and eliminating barriers deeply rooted in fear and/or bias, including racial prejudice in adoption and foster approvals. We believe rescue should feel accessible, supportive, and human—because when we do better for people, we do better for animals.

What a "day in the life" of an outreach manager will look like:

From your very first day as Outreach Manager, you’ll become the voice and connector of our mission—helping build bridges between our rescue, the community, and potential supporters. You’ll start by familiarizing yourself with our messaging platforms (Slack, Google Workspace), creative tools (Canva Pro), and project systems, and then hit the ground running with email and social media communications. Early days will include learning our tone, meeting our team, and understanding our goals.
As you settle in, your skills in public relations, social media engagement, and sales will come to life through managing campaigns, promoting events, responding to inquiries, and cultivating partnerships with donors and the public. You’ll juggle tasks, brainstorm creative outreach ideas, and represent AHOTO across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn—all while keeping a persuasive, mission-first voice.
Over time, you’ll become a key part of our growth by bringing energy, strategy, and heart into every connection you make. Passion for animal rescue drives everything here, and your role helps ensure that every animal’s story is not only told but heard.

 Qualifications & Experience Necessary:

We need drivers to pick up our diaper donations from the DC Diaper Bank in Silver Spring, MD, and deliver them to our Conway Health and Resource Center in Ward 8/Southwest DC. 

This opportunity takes place on the second or third Thursday of each month, usually between 10 am and 1 pm. There is also time for sorting diapers after delivery.

This is perfect for volunteers with a flexible daytime schedule who have a valid driver's license and car, minivan, SUV, etc.

Volunteers should also have the physical ability to pick up and move boxes or trash bags full of diaper packs.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Mobile FARMacy Markets! Community FarmShare runs mobile FARMacy markets at 9 different locations throughout Montgomery County from June to November. In 2026 we have 4 markets in Silver Spring, 2 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Germantown, 1 in Montgomery Village, and 1 in Rockville. Looking for volunteers to help with our fall, winter, spring and summer basketball league. Volunteers will be working with the game clock, the game book and the concession stand. The seasons are ongoing in the fall, winter and spring. Games will be on Saturdays and Sundays in the Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda and Gaithersburg area. We have boys from 2nd grade to 10th and girls from 4th grade to 8th grade. We are looking fro volunteers aged 13-18. Games usually run from around 8am-7pm with volunteers coming at least 10 minutes before game time. No experience needed we will teach you everything you need to know. Nourish Now is a 501 c3 nonprofit food bank, specializing in food recovery and providing donations from grocers, caterers, restaurants, and other food donors. Through our programs, viable food partners are identified, and donations of food are recovered and redistributed through our network. 

The active senior citizens living at Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC)'s Charter House apartment building like to exercise. We're looking for volunteers to lead weekly exercise or yoga classes. If you are an experienced teacher, wonderful. If you don't have teaching experience, you can host the class. You'll welcome residents and play an exercise video on the large screen.

Classes held in the early evening (sometime between 5-6:30pm) have been well-attended. We've also hosted morning classes in the past.

Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. 

Session dates are (roughly):

Winter session 1 Early January-mid-February; Winter session 2 mid-February-early April; Spring session mid-April-mid June; Summer sessions (1-4) mid-June-early August; Fall session 1 early September-late October; Fall session 2 late October-mid-December.

For SSL hours to be added to a student’s record, students must submit MCPS Form 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verification Form, to the school SSL coordinator by the due dates on the form (no later than the last Friday in May), which can be found at bit.ly/SSLReflection. Students will need to complete sections 1 and 3 of MCPS Form 560-51 in full. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

Volunteers are the heart of CaringMatters. In order to responsibly serve patients and the bereaved, every volunteer who works directly with clients must complete a three-day introductory training session, which is often described by graduates as a "transformative experience." 

Because of the interaction volunteers have with clients, necessary background checks, paperwork and other items that must be completed before attending the New Volunteer Training.  These requirements include: 

21 years of age or older

Consenting to a background check (no cost to volunteer trainee) 

Attending an informal interview with Penny Gladhill, Director of Volunteer Helping Hands and co-founder of CaringMatters

After the three day training, specific program volunteers are required to complete additional training. Requirements for each program are detailed below. Please note that volunteers are able to volunteer with more than one program.

Opportunity to help during Annual Turkish Festival in DC. 

The Annual Turkish Festival is a long-standing community event, and this year we will be celebrating its 24th year. It is one of the largest cultural festivals in Washington, DC. Each year, the festival is supported by more than 100 volunteers, including a core group of approximately 60–70 returning volunteers.

The festival runs from early morning through the evening. The opportunity is mostly structured around 4-hour shifts. Some volunteer for one shift, while others may volunteer for two shifts.

Student volunteers assist with a variety of festival-related service activities, including children’s tent activities, tea and coffee service, guest hospitality, volunteer check-in, stage area support, setup, breakdown, arranging tables and chairs, and general festival logistics.

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

Weekly: The Cambodian Buddhist Society Cultural Committee (CBSCC) host Sunday classes from, September to May for individuals who are interested learning the Cambodian dance, music and language. At Re’s Kids Club children 4-10 years old can join us on select Saturdays throughout the academic year to experience the magic of Camp Levine in one afternoon. Re’s Kids Club is looking for three responsible, mature Teen Apprentices to join us for the afternoon! Teen Apprentices will support teachers in the classroom and help guide and encourage kids in each activity. Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Fridays sorting and packing supplies in preparation for Saturday distribution.  This is a great opportunity for those who can only serve in the evening hours!   

Help is needed on Fridays between 3:30pm – 6pm to  sort supplies and bag food for Saturday pickup. Tasks may include moving food from pallet to shelves/bags, setting up tables, signing in/signing out site volunteers.  Note this is an IN-PERSON activity held indoors.

The Patesi Foundation is seeking passionate menstrual educators, school nurses, pediatricians, and counselors to volunteer as facilitators for our Sister Moon program. Help us educate the next generation and normalize conversations about periods! Sister Moon is a first-period empowerment experience designed to equip girls ages 8-12 with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to navigate this important transition.

Volunteers will play a key role in delivering age-appropriate education and fostering a safe, stigma-free environment. Our first session will be on April 25th from 11:00 AM -12:30 PM., but we plan to have other sessions in the summer and fall. Your part will be the educational piece. The health system is committed to being the most trusted provider of healthcare services in the area. We, Holy Cross Health and Trinity Health, serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities.  We need your help in contributing to our healing presence by bringing music to our lobbies.  We welcome any advanced musicians (non-vocal, non-drums) who are interested in either bringing their own instrument or using the hospital provided piano.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
