Many middle schools seek high school volunteers to assist with their Grade 6 Outdoor Education program, and the schools listed on the Google form linked below have asked for assistance in identifying potential assistants to work with them during Outdoor Ed. 

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program. 

There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.

High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

WAPO welcome youth musicians to join our team.

Students age from 12 to 22.

We have two concerts scheduled in Fall and Spring at Culture Center each year in Gaithersburg, and it is free to community and public.

Our youth musicians will perform with professional and amateur musicians and community choirs with classical and popular musical and songs.

Each concert has been introducing the music and enjoy the music with all music lovers at all age group.

Volunteers embrace Main Street’s movement of inclusion by supporting programs in a variety of ways. Program volunteers actively engage with members of all abilities and participate in all program activities. To address the acute illiteracy crisis among early elementary school students, we are recruiting adult & high school volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with 2nd graders from October to May on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,  and Thursdays, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at three locations: Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, and Germantown.  Volunteers can sign up for one or two nights/week.  No prior experience is required.  Only a background check and participation in a 4-hour orientation session.  Tutors are at least 21 years old.  Readers are at least 16 years old.  We need both!  Help us get these kids back up to grade level!!  If you would like to sign up, go HERE.

Provide support to the Executive Director of the A2JC in many different ways, including writing website postings, writing journal articles, contributing to grant applications, and interacting with community organizations.

We are looking for a talented team to met to develop projects which will help those who have impairment and medical needs. Project concepts can cover the full range of available options to incorporate skill in 3d printing, robotics, design, programming, medical and nursing care and other areas to serve the practical needs of those with disabilities or medical needs in our community.

We are planning to meet weekly at Rockville Public Library or Potomac Public Library.  Participants should have an interest in helping others and some experience in one or more of the areas mentioned above. The initial meetings will be about concepts and we will collectively work to design solutions. At that point we will work with the target community of individuals who are intended to benefit from the project to further refine and test the solution.

The nonprofit organization Science is Elemental (SIE) is looking for scientists eager to support elementary school teachers and spend a few hours a month (flexibly) answering teachers’ questions about their science curriculum. If desired (but not essential for volunteering), there will also be opportunities to speak (virtually or in-person) about your science or career to elementary school students. While some elementary school teachers are well-grounded in the sciences, most are not, as being so is not a requirement for a degree in elementary education, nor for being hired in most school systems. As a result, they may need science support from others to fully understand the material they are teaching.

The goal of this project is to provide the scientific background teachers want to know so that they can better serve their students. We need some scientists now, to complete our testing, and then more once the school year starts. Once the network is live, we plan to provide the answers to teachers’ questions within one hour.

Volunteers will use Slack to receive and answer questions. It is expected that each volunteer monitor Slack, when they have time, for questions being asked. In this manner, volunteers only provide their services when it is convenient for them to do so. Our goal is to have a sufficiently large network of scientist volunteers to allow coverage of the Slack channel for the entire day, and especially during and immediately after school hours.

The qualifications for this volunteer role are:

1)      At least three years working in any science (to include computer and data sciences, and engineering fields), or three years graduate study in such fields.

2)      Willingness to obtain a Science is Elemental Slack account (at no cost to you)

3)      Have some time during the day to monitor the Slack channel, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time.

4)      Desire to help elementary school teachers instill a love for the sciences in their students.

Science is Elemental runs integrated science workshops. We want kids to have fun doing what they love to do such as art. music and sports, while learning some science. SIE's goal is to reach those kids that don't yet know that they like science. While we are thrilled to have high school students helping out, and welcome their participation, many of our workshops occur during the school day, when they are not available. SIE is seeking professionals with some time during the day. Retirees or near-retirees would be fantastic, particularly those with a science or engineering background. The workshops can occur anywhere in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Are you interested in joining a group of friends to lead community service projects in your local community? We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

This is a unique volunteer opportunity! Please read the information below thoroughly.

We currently need volunteers to monitor protective order hearings in Rockville or Silver Spring District Court for the morning sessions (8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) on weekdays.  You will always attend court with at least one other person and meet after the court session to ensure that you and your co-monitor have recorded the same factual information. If there are discrepancies, you will resolve those and adjust your forms before leaving the courthouse. This step is critical to the accuracy of our data and is not optional.

Volunteers should be available to come to court at least twice a month for a minimum of a year due to the learning curve and training involved.

Please note that court monitors collect data on physical paper forms (no electronics are allowed in the courtroom), scan them via a phone app or an actual scanner, and email them to our Data Analyst & Manager for review. We seek court monitors who:

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 90 concerts by the Aug, 2025, involving more than 400 student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 10 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

We are actively recruiting talented musicians from K-12 to join our mission. MusicAid hosts biweekly or monthly concerts at various assisted living facilities near Potomac and Arlington, Join MusicAid today and earn up to 4 SSL hours for contributing to our concert performances! SSL hours vary based on your performance duration and the length of the concert.

We appreciate all types of performances, including but not limited to instrument playing, singing, dancing, talk shows, comedy acts, poetry readings, and more. Whether you're a solo act, duo, trio, or group, you're invited to perform.

Come out and help care for our animals.  Our Saturday workdays involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water buckets and troughs, keeping pastures maintained, and performing regular animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, regular exams, giving shots, hoof trims, and more.

We have quite a number of elderly and special needs animals at our sanctuary, and are looking for someone who is specifically interested in and capable of assisting with their care several times a week on an ongoing basis.  Responsibilities include: 

- Giving oral medication as instructed

- Administering shots (IM and SubQ) as instructed

- Bandaging 

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

- Keeping detailed observation notes

Additional duties could include: 

- transport of animals to local veterinarians

- light cleaning of their housing areas and replenishing waters

Must have a current tetanus shot; be capable of lifting at least 60 pounds; have own vehicle and good driving record; some experience with large animals highly preferred.

Our Saturday workdays run from 9-1 and involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water troughs and buckets, checking on animals, doing pasture maintenance, painting fences, and more.  Young people will learn the skills of proper tool usage (and putting them away!), how to interact safely and appropriately with large animals, how to work with many different kinds of people in a team, and more. One-on-one volunteers serve adult consumers who are blind or visually impaired.
CLB’s volunteer readers read in-person inside the homes of adults who are blind or visually impaired.  CLB and its volunteer program serve the entire Washington, DC Region.  They read the consumers' mail and/or paper documents.  Volunteers might take the consumers to the grocery stores, too.
Volunteers in the program, contribute at least four hours a month of time, must be 18 years of age, and approved background checks, as well as attend a virtual orientation.

Elevate the Future is a U.S.-based student-led 501(c)(3) organization committed to increasing access to business and computer science education around the world. We have 43 chapters in 18 countries with over 400 team members. Elevate the Future's Maryland Chapter seeks remote student volunteers for its Natural Sciences Education Department, even subjects that are not extensively covered in MCPS curricula. Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

What is the contest? Mosaic is our creative writing program geared towards students who are enrolled in MCPS middle schools, between 6th – 8th grades. Students write on the topic of “My Culture” in the form of short story, poetry, or essay. Mosaic allows them to fully explore their feelings and cultural identity at home and in the classroom.

What skills are needed? Judges are needed to evaluate students' written work, in the form of short story, poetry, or essay based on a provided rubric. Judges should be compassionate and open-minded readers with a firm grasp of grammar and appreciation for diversity in literature. Applicants should feel comfortable using technology for submitting scores and navigating the FOLMC website.

Where does this take place? From the comfort of your home. Judges will download a .pdf file of entries and upload scores via the FOLMC website.

What’s the timeline in 2025/6? Judges will be provided one grade of student entries on or about February 26th with scores being due to FOLMC by March 18th. If there is a tie, judges may be asked to read submissions from a different grade level to break the tie. Those entries would be provided by March 21st with scores being due March 27th. Each grade level is approximately 50 entries, including all three genres. Due to the varied length of entries it is impossible to determine the exact amount of time needed to read, judge, and submit scores, however, judges have frequently indicated they had enough time to complete all tasks and enjoyed the program immensely. Dates are approximate and can change based on current events.

What are judges provided? Each judge is provided a password protected site at folmc.org with the scoring rubric, scoring grid, and student entries. Once judging is over, judges will be invited to attend the awards ceremony featuring a notable author and gifted a copy of the published anthology.  

Are previous judges permitted to participate again? Yes, we encourage previous judges to re-apply to participate.

Our students are resilient, insightful, and motivated, and though the barriers they face threaten derailment, mentors help students process complex issues, identify solutions, and develop and implement plans so that they may realize their fullest potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused even greater disadvantages to our already marginalized student population, which is why our students need additional support to help navigate challenges as they attend Montgomery College, a vocational training program, work full-time, or choose to re-access their education plan.

Students enter the Future Link program through a 15-week Self-Advocacy and Career Development Seminar, after which they are matched with a mentor.

Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on:

Mentors become the regular point of contact with the student and the Future Link staff. In addition, Future Link provides resources as needed to support the student and mentor. For instance, if the student needs to create a budget or a LinkedIn profile and that is not the mentor's strength, a different volunteer will work with the student in that area.

Mentors attend two training sessions and a one-on-one meeting with staff before meeting their mentee. Continuous support is provided once matched with a mentee. We request an initial one-year commitment with an option to continue beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland and have at least five years’ work experience in their career field.

Do you live in Montgomery County and have a dog who is at least 1 year old (and has lived with you for at least six months) that loves interacting with people and wishes to make an impact in their community? People Animals Love (PAL) needs additional volunteer teams to serve our partners across Maryland. Places we visit include Adventist HealthCare, Montgomery Hospice, JSSA Hospice, retirement/assisted living facilities, libraries, schools, correctional facilities, and hospitals. Visits take place during the weekday, in the evenings, and on weekends.  Right now we especially need volunteers during the weekday. Harvest Intercontinental Church in Olney, Maryland serves the mid county region providing food and other vital services to residents every week. Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Saturday mornings delivering to designated sites and homebound residents.

Help is needed on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1pm for pickup/deliver boxes of groceries and other essential items to residents in several Mid County communities. 

The hub volunteer coordinator will contact each person to provide additional information. Specific instructions will be given when you arrive at the distribution site. Volunteers may pick up boxes at 16227 Batchellors Forest Rd, Olney, Maryland 20832. Delivery is contact-less.  Drivers must be at least 18 years of age.

FourNineFive Legacy Volleyball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal growing boys volleyball by affording players from families with limited financial resources opportunities to play.  We are looking for student volunteers to serve as Marketing & Social Media Managers to help develop social media marketing content and campaigns to increase visibility, engagement, and community involvement. This internship is designed specifically for students eager to explore the world of media production, content creation, social media, communications or marketing.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the production of multimedia content such as videos and social media posts.

Participate in brainstorming sessions for content ideas and campaign strategies.

Help with editing tasks for videos and audio content.

Support the social media team in content scheduling and community engagement efforts.

Qualifications:

A qualified candidate has excellent communication skills, is technology savvy, can work independently, and interested in working for a 501c3 nonprofit. Candidates must have access to a computer and reliable internet access. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of social media eg Facebook, Twitter/X, Linked In and Instagram plus blogs and other communication platforms, a plus.

Familiarity with the sport of volleyball.

Comfort working or learning Google Suite including: Google Docs, Forms etc. This role is best for a very creative self-starter who has ability and initiative to work independently from home.

We will award SSL hours according to the following equivalency:

1 marketing collateral created (e.g., flyer, brochure, etc.) = 2 SSL hours

1 social media post = 1 hour

1 marketing video created = 4 SSL hours

Volunteers will also attend check-in meetings with our core team through a virtual platform (Google Meet) using their personal/private accounts and SSL hours will also be granted for meetings (1 meeting hour = 1 SSL hour). Small Things Matter's Crafting for Charity Program helps those in need with handmade items.  We are looking for volunteers to help us decorate bookmarks as part of our literacy program for underserved children.  We provide them with a choice of a brand new book and they also get to pick a handmade bookmark of their choice.  Encouraging a lifelong love of reading can help these children succeed in school and in life. We would love to have individuals and groups help us by decorating bookmarks.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by decorating bookmarks.

5 decorated bookmarks = 1 SSL hour of service.

Four Seasons Dancers is a non-profit dance troupe performing global-inspired dance programs in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, community events, local festivals, rehabilitation centers and other organization.

Criteria:
Our junior troupe is for students who are at least 12 years of age, currently taking dance or who have prior dance/gymnastics training and who love to perform. All students interested in being a part of the troupe must audition.

Auditions  start in AUGUST/SEPTEMBER (Gaithersburg, MD ) 

JUNIOR TROUPE INFORMATION: Costumes (for performances) will be lent to each dancer at no charge. To prepare for our programs, dancers will attend a weekly class regularly and enroll in our semester beginning September, 2025. Additional rehearsals during the week may be scheduled in preparation for performances. Silver Spring Village sustains a robust neighbors-helping-neighbors network that supports older adults who wish to live as independently as possible and be fully engaged in their community as they age. Our service area includes zip codes 20910, 20901, 20815 east of Rock Creek Park part of 20902 (Wheaton) east and south of Wheaton Regional Park as well as Kemp Mill.

Through our Tech Coaching program, members of the Village receive one-to-one tutoring on technology devices. We are seeking Volunteers who will work with members to help them gain confidence in their use of technology. This role can be done either virtually or in person depending on what the member and coach decide. Along with the orientation/training that all volunteers receive, Tech Coaches receive a training specific to this activity.

Volunteering with Silver Spring Village is flexible, you can spend as much or as little time as your schedule permits. Village volunteers must undergo a criminal background screening and attend an orientation/training session before volunteering. Miracle League Buddies are volunteers ranging in age from elementary school to senior citizens.  These include family members, individuals, and local youth and civic groups.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.”  Many people refer to the Buddy volunteers as “Angels in the Outfield.”   Buddies can bring their own equipment but that is not required. What is required is to provide smiles and laughter to the Miracle League Players.

The minimum age for a Buddy is 13.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.  The goals for Miracle League Buddies are:

We have volunteer opportunities in the Fall and Spring seasons on Saturday and Sunday.

Got a group that wants to volunteer? 

KEEN has opportunities on the weekends from September through June. In Montgomery County, those opportunities are mostly on Sundays at KEEN Sports for Kids, Teens or Young Adults. (Ask about other opportunities as well.) 

During KEEN's Sports Programs, athletes (KEEN's young people with disabilities, ages 5-25) and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities in a group setting. Together they do individual activities that are tailored solely to the needs of the athlete. They may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball, or they may take a walk around the outdoor track. Many love to bounce on 36" balls or be pulled along the floor on a flat wheeled scooter. A group may form for Duck, Duck, Goose. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle (although some athletes still need to run around its periphery, and that's okay) and sharing with the group what they did that day "that made them very Proud." They literally go out dancing: the Hokey Pokey for the younger kids and the Macarena for the teens and young adults. Athletes burn energy, meet and interact with new volunteers, see old friends, and then rejoin their parents, who have had some precious respite time. Here is a list of many different In-Person and remote opportunities that you are invited to choose this school year:

5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. The piece may be about how you discovered a side of yourself you had not known before these music classes. Relate how you would like to take what you learned into the world to share with others and to serve again. (1 SSL hour after it is published online or in the Newsletter). Piano Pals for Elementary school children, Guitar Pals for Elementary school children, and Piano Pals for Seniors.  Look for Summer Training sessions (coming in July) for new volunteers.  Experienced mentors will teach new volunteers.

We hold various community events through out the year that offer education and services in natural health care and wellness.

Volunteers will assist program staff by helping to set up and organize activities, engaging with children to foster an inclusive and supportive environment, and ensuring smooth transitions between activities. They may also help care for the equestrian facility general barn chores by tidying up spaces, preparing equipment, and assisting with basic horse care under supervision.
