JCA Interages has provided meaningful intergenerational programs for more than 30 years.  Our volunteer opportunities for those 50+ take place in Montgomery County Public Schools, MCPL libraries, and other organizations.

We are seeking volunteers aged 50+ to help children k-5 with homework and fun learning activities afterschool.  In partnership with Maryvale Elementary and Linkages to Learning 1010 1st Street Rockville, MD 20850 Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Choose reading, writing, and/or math. Assist with homework and other fun activities. Two days/week preferred. Grades: K-5.

Come be your scariest self at the Glen Echo Heights Haunted Trail!! We will need volunteers to haunt the forest on Sunday October 26th. The haunting is from 5:30-6:15 but we will need kids for prep and setup staring at 12:30 and we will need help for cleanup after.

Come join us for King of the Hill Martial Arts Open, one of our martial arts tournaments for this year's season. Volunteers are needed for timekeepers, scorekeepers, registration desk, etc. You will be contacted to coordinate the day's assignments.

We’re gearing up for our annual Trunk or Treat celebration, and we need volunteers to help make it a success!  

We’re specifically looking for teens to host trunks and assist with grilling/concessions. This is a fun and easy way for teens to get involved, support the community,  and earn service learning hours!

Date: October 26th

Time: 11:30-1:30

Location: Culver Street Parking Lot

The event runs from 12-1. We ask volunteers to arrive at 11:30am to help set up. Bring a trunk and decorations or use some of ours. We ask you to stay until 1:30pm to help clean up. We need to move tables and boxes of decorations back to storage and make sure all garbage is thrown away.

If you have access to a vehicle please decorate/dress up your car, wear a costume, and come help out for SSL hours!

As a Volunteer Coordination and Supervision Volunteer, you’ll directly impact how effectively we serve the community. Your leadership and communication skills will help bring new volunteers into our mission, ensure they feel supported, and keep our operations running smoothly. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop coordination and management experience while contributing to a cause that uplifts vulnerable women and families.

Responsibilities Include:

  - Collaborating with the administrative support team to contact potential volunteers
  - Scheduling and conducting virtual meet-and-greet sessions
  - Overseeing account creation and onboarding for new volunteers
  - Maintaining communication with current volunteers and offering ongoing support
  - Completing and signing community service forms as needed

Volunteer with UNMUTE to bring warmth and music to the senior community !!

Join us on Friday, 11/14/2025 as we partner with Germanton HELP to assemble over 800 Bags of food to be distributed on Saturday, 11/15/2025.  We will be assembling over 400 bags of dry goods and 400 bags of fresh produce to supply over 400 families with food for the Holiday season.  Activities include assembling and lifting 800 bags of food.  This will include set up, tear down and prepping for Saturday's food drive.  

Volunteer and SSL sign starts at 3:55pm.  Assembling will start at 4:00pm.  You will earn 2.5 SSL hours.   SSL parents please pick up by 6:45pm at the latest.

Please register separately for the actual food distribution drive on Saturday, 11/15/2025.

Grace Helping Hands is seeking volunteers to assist with social media content creation and posting to help promote our mission of providing essential toiletry kits to homeless women and children.

To ensure consistency and impact, we ask that volunteers commit to six (6+) months of service and be able to dedicate three hours per week to this role.

SSL Hours for Social Media Support
Middle and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by reviewing, finalizing, and creating content for our social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

SSL Hour Equivalency:
Three (3) social media content pieces reviewed, finalized, or created (e.g., Instagram or Facebook posts) = One (1) SSL hour (upon approval by Grace Helping Hands).

Instructions for Earning SSL Hours:
Content Review and Creation Requirements:
Review content created by the social media team, including:
- Titles and descriptions.
- Introduction/context of the post.
- Message clarity and impact.
- Hashtags and keywords.
- Attached images, videos, and links (e.g., YouTube).
- Proofread for grammar, spelling, and style.
- Edit, finalize, or create engaging content specifically designed for Instagram and Facebook.

Submission Process:
Submit the reviewed, finalized, or created content as a document to volunteer@gracehelpinghands.org for approval.
Make edits based on feedback provided by Grace Helping Hands.

Approval Process:
An adult representative from Grace Helping Hands will review the finalized content.

SSL hours will be awarded once three (3) content pieces (including Instagram and Facebook posts) have been approved.

Additional Notes:
All social media content will be managed and approved by Grace Helping Hands.
Volunteers assisting with website updates will work on improving the site’s layout, adding relevant content, and optimizing functionality. Prior experience with web editing is helpful but not required.

To ensure consistency and impact, we ask that volunteers commit to at least six months of service and be able to dedicate three hours per week to this role. Responsibilities include creating and scheduling posts, engaging with our online community, and helping spread awareness about our mission to provide toiletry kits and feminine products to homeless women and children. Grace Helping Hands is seeking a skilled and motivated volunteer Website Manager to oversee and maintain our nonprofit’s website. This role is ideal for adults with professional experience in web management, digital communications, or IT who are passionate about supporting our mission to provide hygiene kits to homeless women and children in our community.

Responsibilities:

Maintain and update website content to ensure accuracy and relevance.

Optimize website navigation and user experience for visitors and potential donors.

Collaborate with the GHH team to add new programs, events, and fundraising campaigns online.

Monitor website performance and recommend improvements or updates.

Support integration of online donation tools and volunteer sign-up forms.

Qualifications:

Professional experience managing websites (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, or similar platforms preferred).

Basic knowledge of web design, SEO, and digital content management.

Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Passion for nonprofit work and community impact.

Description:
Grace Helping Hands is seeking compassionate volunteers to help collect hygiene products for homeless women and children in our community. Many go without the basic necessities that promote dignity, cleanliness, and health. You can make a real difference by organizing a donation drive or simply collecting items on your own.

We are looking for individuals, families, church groups, and community organizations to collect new, unopened hygiene products and deliver them to one of our drop-off locations. All products should be travel size.

The National Foundation for Cancer Research is hosting our annual conference on Friday, October 24th at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.  This year’s event will feature updates in cancer research, new treatment options, a feature on women scientific leaders, work from early-stage oncology start-ups, and our annual scientific awards ceremony.

We are seeking volunteers to help us with setup, breakdown, registration, providing information to attendees, hosting an information or merchandise table, and other duties in the event room during the program.

We are seeking volunteers for two shifts, 7:30am-2:30pm OR 2:30pm-9pm

Come out to learn how to recognize the top least-wanted invasive weeds in our area, get some fresh air, help restore habitat and potentially get a workout in the process! We will work on spreading mulch in previously cleared areas, and on removing non-native invasive vines from the park area adjacent to the high school. Our goal is to save trees from invasive vines and thereby help combat climate change. Please spread the word and join us! Gaithersburg HELP is a dedicated, all-volunteer organization that provides essential support to local communities. We are seeking a volunteer to assist clients with food and infant needs. If you live in Montgomery County, MD, we can use your help.

This volunteering responsibilities include:

Retrieving and returning voicemails.

Booking pantry appointments or deliveries based on client needs.

Registering new households in the Food Bank Manager database.

Informing clients about Gaithersburg HELP services and referring them to other teams (Rx, Transportation, etc.) as needed.

Refer callers to other resources available in the county, as needed. Keep informed of those resources as displayed on the Gaithersburg HELP webpage.

Working scheduled shifts and coordinating with the lead volunteer.

Work from home using your phone and a computer with Internet access: return calls and schedule clients to pick up food at the pantry. Call hours are Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Join us as we partner with Germantown HELP to distribute food bags to our local community.  We will be having over 400 families drive thru for our Holiday drive.

Activities include  transferring over 400 produce bags and 400 dry good bags to be handed out in our parking lot.  Assistance will also be needed outside with the distribution.  This will also include set up and tear down. NOTE:    This is a rain or shine event.  Please be prepared for the weather that day.

The Community Design Lab at BlackRock is excited to host a student‑led garden build, and we’d love for you to be part of it! Together with local students, we’ll be planting a vibrant new garden filled with native plants that support pollinators and bring more life and color to the BlackRock campus.

Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Volunteers have an initial commitment period of one year and are requested to participate in at least one deployment per year. To help remove barriers to volunteering, approved travel expenses are paid or reimbursed by Humane World for Animals.

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase items and assemble the bags. The bag can be a reusable grocery size bag, small laundry basket, or bucket. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. This is an amazing opportunity to gain volunteer experience helping Arise and Flourish, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance use and misuse.  During the last ten years, Arise and Flourish has paved the way through public and private schools on educating our youth of the dangers associated with addiction. Our program delivers a robust and real-life look into the cycle of addiction and provides an understanding, knowledge and insight on how to exercise prevention. Arise and Flourish’s family of dedicated volunteers have delivered our program to more than 350 schools and have reached over 44,000 students with our impactful message of prevention and hope. In addition to our visits to schools, we are also asking for the student’s assistance to continue the education of addiction and prevention through SSL hours. 

What students will do:

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

Project concepts can cover the full range of available options to incorporate skill in 3d printing, robotics, design, programming, medical and nursing care and other areas to serve the practical needs of those with disabilities or medical needs in our community.

It would be helpful to have volunteers remain active with the meetings throughout the 2025/2026 school year as it would help with the continuity of the development of the projects.

We are planning to meet weekly at Rockville Public Library or Potomac Public Library.  Participants should have an interest in helping others and some experience in one or more of the areas mentioned above. The initial meetings will be about concepts and we will collectively work to design solutions. Begun after the death of mother and U.S. diplomat Sarah Debbink Langenkamp, Ride for Your Life is a 10-mile slow ride from Downtown Bethesda to the Lincoln Memorial dedicated to creating change on our roadways.

Marking World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we will rally at the memorial with safe streets leaders and members of Congress to demand better — better infrastructure and better laws — for all those who use our roads.

We are looking for volunteers to support registration for riders (8:30-10:00am in Bethesda), to usher event attendees to correct locations (8:30-10:30am in Bethesda AND 11:30-1:30pm in Washington, DC) , and to support event set-up and breakdown (8:30-10:00am in Bethesda, 11:30-1:30pm in Washington, DC) . 

TIMING/LOCATION ALERT: Morning shifts (8:30am-12pm) for event set-up/break-down and event registration will occur in Downtown Bethesda at Caroline Freeland Urban Park (7200 Arlington Road Bethesda, MD 20814). Afternoon shifts from 11:30-1:30pm will be at the Lincoln Monument in Washington, DC (2 Lincoln Memorial Cir NW, Washington, DC 20002) where volunteers are also needed for event set-up/breakdown, and to support attendees.

Volunteers will meet at Chapel (on the grounds) at 10:00 a.m. to be given instructions regarding the placement of flags on grave sites of our military veterans. We have more than 500 veterans buried at Monocacy Cemetery.

We will gather in groups of about 3 volunteers per section, each would walk the assigned cemetery section to place the flags.

We estimate 2 working hours for this event. All ages welcome, from 6th grade up. Hilly, rough ground must be traversed. Dress appropriately for weather of the day. We will place flags rain or shine.

Interfaith Works Lon's House is a home that provide permanent housing, 24-hour oversight, and intensive case management services to 8 men with behavioral health diagnoses.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 8 clients at the IW Lon's House, located at 109 Fleet St, Rockville, MD 20850 Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours. Please let us know at least one week in advance if you'd like to serve the meal.

These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 37 clients at the IW Women's Center, located at 2 Taft Ct, Suite 100, Rockville MD, 20850. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Finalize the Holiday Drive prep by boxing everything up and making it ready for distribution! 

For nearly 50 years, the City of Rockville has operated an annual Holiday Drive that relies on a collaborative partnership with local churches, schools, civic organizations, service clubs, businesses, social service agencies, and individuals working together to distribute holiday baskets to Rockville families and seniors in need. This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. For SSL hours to be added to a student’s record, students must submit MCPS Form 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verification Form, to the school SSL coordinator by the due dates on the form (no later than the first Friday in June), which can be found at bit.ly/SSLReflection. Students will need to complete sections 1 and 3 of MCPS Form 560-51 in full. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

The Germantown Historical Society, Menare Foundation and Boy Scout Troop 1325 sponsor a large Flea Market on the first Saturdays April through November at the MARC commuter parking lot, Rt. 118 and Bowman Mill Dr. in Germantown. Volunteers will help direct traffic inside the customer parking lot, run errands, help customers with purchases and collect trash. Volunteers will work in pairs and will be provided with safety vests and gloves.

Arise and Flourish, is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance abuse prevention by sharing stories from persons in long-term recovery. Through the schools and community, we bring real life stories to our youth showing the devastation of the disease of addiction. By emphasizing the importance of understanding the cycle of addiction, our goal is to arm our youth with the knowledge of the dangers associated with drug and alcohol use, how to prevent addiction, and how to seek help.

Since 2017, Arise and Flourish has helped to bring a greater awareness of the addiction problem by visiting 350 Middle and High schools in Montgomery County, Maryland and speaking to more than 44,000 students.  We are run by volunteers who dedicate their time to visiting the schools. In order for our organization to grow and bring continued awareness to the schools and community, we need your help to continue our mission.

We are looking for young people in recovery who have been sober for one year or more and are interested in becoming a volunteer with Arise and Flourish, Inc. to speak to MCPS MS and HS students, sharing their personal story and educating them about the cycle of addiction.

Piano Pals for ES Children:  Fox Chapel ES, Gaithersburg ES, Brown Station ES, Clopper Mill ES are reopening in October through Spring Break. Tanglewood HOC Apartments will continue on Saturday mornings.  Upcounty HOC at Stewartown begins on Tuesdays in October.   For training of new volunteers in order to mentor in the Fall 2025, contact: thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.  Dates/location by appointment.

Mentor a child per half hour session afterschool.  Using the detailed world renowned piano curriculum, Faber Piano Adventures,  teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at an elementary school or HOC facility.

Using the detailed Faber Piano Adventures,   teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at Tanglewood Housing for Title 1 families.
