Pride In the Plaza is a space where everyone can come together to celebrate love and living as our most authentic selves! The festival is located at Veterans Plaza: 1 Veterans Pl, Silver Spring, MD 20910. So mark your calendars and join us for this exciting event!

Students can earn SSL hours by volunteering with us at the event. Volunteers will assist with setting up, engaging with attendees, and promoting resources that foster inclusivity and well-being in the LGBTQ+ community. This is a great opportunity for students to actively contribute to a vibrant event while gaining valuable service hours and making meaningful connections within the Pride family. Shifts are available during the following times: Morning:   - 9 AM - 12 PM   - 12 PM - 3 PM Afternoon:   - 3 PM - 6 PM   - 6 PM - 9 PM Evening   - 9 PM - 11 PM.

About Green Corners for Everyone

Green Corners for Everyone (GC4E) is a student-led environmental sustainability initiative that aims to convert underused public space into vibrant, lively green corner/pocket park to make nature more accessible. GC4E is an initiative started by students part of SGAP Leaders' Sustainability Fellows 2026 Program.

Every other month, we will be organizing a group of Middle and High School Students to clean up trash along the road. Our mission is to participate in a community activity by keeping county-owned roadsides litter free. This opportunity is held outdoors and near the roads. We are asking all volunteers to read and have an adult sign the consent form prior to the event.

*Minors will NOT be able to participate without completed consent form.*

----- What will I be doing? You will meet at 1pm at the Clarksburg Church and walk over to the designated area. You will be equipped with gloves, hefty trash bags, and pick-up tools. Opening Minds through Art 

Student volunteers are invited to join us for Opening Minds Through Art (OMA), 

an award-winning, failure-free, evidence-based intergenerational art program. 

OMA provides older adults with early-stage memory loss opportunities for 

creative self-expression and social engagement. 

Volunteers are matched with participants to provide support as they create 

abstract artwork that engage their minds and break through cognitive barriers. 

Volunteers must attend the orientation, all art sessions, and the art show.

As a Meaningful Patient & Family Visit Volunteer, you provide emotional support, companionship, and a comforting presence to patients and their loved ones during their time in hospice care. Your role is centered on creating meaningful moments—whether through conversation, quiet companionship, or simply being present during times of need.

Responsibilities may include visiting with patients, engaging in light activities, offering a listening ear, supporting family members during visits, and helping foster a peaceful and respectful environment. Volunteers may also assist with legacy projects, such as memory sharing or letter writing, and provide gentle support during transitional moments.

This role is ideal for individuals who are compassionate, dependable, and comfortable offering support in emotionally sensitive situations. No specialized training is required—just a heart for service and a willingness to connect with others in meaningful ways. Join Rock Creek Conservancy for this invasive plant removal restoration event at Strathmore Music Center and Mansion. Invasive plants are a major threat to our fragile forests, and stopping their spread helps allow native plants to thrive in the understory.

Event location, directions, and information will be sent from the event leader 48 hours prior to the event.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the work and weather. We recommend wearing sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers, including pants and long sleeves - this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like poison ivy. 

What to bring: We recommend bringing water, and snacks if desired. Tools and supplies will be provided. Please bring your own gloves if you have them.

Silver Spring Village sustains a robust neighbors-helping-neighbors network that supports older adults who wish to live as independently as possible and be fully engaged in their community as they age. Volunteers who would like to become Home Organizers receive a special training and often times work in pairs.

Clarksburg Yard has adopted a Gateway Center Drive! This is a 2 -miles stretch that runs from Shawnee Lane to Clarksburg Road and is parallel to Frederick Road behind our property.

Every other month, we will be organizing a group of Middle and High School Students to clean up trash along the road. Our mission is to participate in a community activity by keeping county-owned roadsides litter free. This opportunity is held outdoors and near the roads. We are asking all volunteers to read and have an adult sign the consent form prior to the event.

*Minors will NOT be able to participate without completed consent form.*

----- What will I be doing? You will meet at 1pm at the Clarksburg Church and walk over to the designated area. You will be equipped with gloves, hefty trash bags, and pick-up tools. ArtUnity Youth hosts an ongoing, supervised in-person service program where students create encouragement cards for hospital patients. Each month features a different positive theme to guide artwork/card, art works and messages: March: You Are Not Alone, April: Hope and Strength, May: One Day at a Time, June: Bright Days Ahead, July: Courage in Every Step, August: Keep Going. Volunteers design hospital-appropriate cards, write supportive messages, and help package donations for healthcare partners. All art supplies are provided. Sessions are held on the first floor at Rockville Memorial Library on Fridays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Please look for a BIG Teddy Bear wearing an ArtUnity Youth T-shirt. Students may attend for 1–2 hours within this time window. Registration is required. Students earn 1 SSL hour per 60 minutes of verified participation (maximum 2 hours per session), based on supervisor attendance. All artwork must meet program guidelines and is reviewed and approved on-site by the ArtUnity Youth program manager before SSL hours are verified.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

1. We welcome all students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as amateur college students.
2. All music levels and genres are welcome.

UNMUTE's Student Service Learning (SSL) hours Calculation Rules and Timeline has been adjusted to meet public school's policies and compliance requirements.

Volunteer with UNMUTE to bring warmth and music to the senior community !!

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22.

SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

Interfaith Works Becky's House is a home that provide permanent housing, 24-hour oversight, and intensive case management services to 8 senior women with behavioral health diagnoses.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 8 clients at the IW Becky's House, located at 13023 Parkland Dr., Rockville, MD 20853. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

You can sign up for dates to provide meals here.

Students can earn 4 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. Breakfast is drop off only. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours. Please let us know at least one week in advance if you'd like to serve the meal.

NOTICE: Volunteers for this opportunity must successfully complete a background check prior to volunteering. 

Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. 

Session dates are (roughly):

Winter session 1 Early January-mid-February; Winter session 2 mid-February-early April; Spring session mid-April-mid June; Summer sessions (1-4) mid-June-early August; Fall session 1 early September-late October; Fall session 2 late October-mid-December.

The Interfaith Works Homeless Services Department provides weekly outreach to individuals living in encampments throughout Prince George’s County. Each Thursday, social workers, peer support specialists, and other Interfaith Works staff visit designated sites to connect with residents and assess their needs on the path to housing. Join our next Volunteer Training - September 22nd, 23rd & 24th, 2026 from 9am to 4pm in Gaithersburg, MD.

Volunteers are the heart of CaringMatters. In order to responsibly serve patients and the bereaved, every volunteer who works directly with clients must complete a three-day introductory training session, which is often described by graduates as a "transformative experience." 

Because of the interaction volunteers have with clients, necessary background checks, paperwork and other items that must be completed before attending the New Volunteer Training.  These requirements include: 

21 years of age or older

Consenting to a background check (no cost to volunteer trainee)

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter. 

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources.

Opportunity to help during Annual Turkish Festival in DC. 

The Annual Turkish Festival is a long-standing community event, and this year we will be celebrating its 24th year. It is one of the largest cultural festivals in Washington, DC. Each year, the festival is supported by more than 100 volunteers, including a core group of approximately 60–70 returning volunteers.

The festival runs from early morning through the evening. The opportunity is mostly structured around 4-hour shifts. Some volunteer for one shift, while others may volunteer for two shifts.

Student volunteers assist with a variety of festival-related service activities, including children’s tent activities, tea and coffee service, guest hospitality, volunteer check-in, stage area support, setup, breakdown, arranging tables and chairs, and general festival logistics.

Looking for ways to shape the next generation of students and make a difference in your community? The City of Rockville's Latino Youth Development Program (LYDP) hosts a free after school program at Elwood Smith Community Center and is looking for tutors, retired educators, or passionate professionals to volunteer for 1-2 hours per week.

Volunteers will work in small groups or perform one-on-one tutoring with middle and/or high school students. You will support them with homework on subjects such as math, science, reading, and others. This is a great way to build relationships with the students while also helping them excel in school.

Volunteers with educator or tutor experience are preferred. Volunteers fluent in Spanish are preferred, but not required, to help a few students who primarily speak Spanish.

The volunteer shifts are 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays with middle school students, and 3-4 p.m. on Wednesdays with high school students. Volunteer availability can be discussed.

This will be a meaningful, rewarding experience that will help our students excel in school, and in turn support them in working toward graduation and beyond!

Reflection Park’s mission reflects a value for harmony with the natural world. Our one-mile natural-surface trail through the forest offers a peaceful respite from the noise of everyday life. However, the native species living there face a quieter kind of disruption as they endure competition from invasive plants that threaten their natural abundance. Invasive Bittersweet is one of those species that was introduced to this country from Eastern Asia as an ornamental plant. It grows rapidly, jeopardizing the health and survival of other plants as it winds around them.

We’ll start with a short primer on recognizing Bittersweet and other common invasives in our area before we get to the physical work of vine-clearing – and, in the process, head-clearing! Removal is surprisingly satisfying, and every invasive plant we eliminate helps protect another tree or understory plant.

Anyone interested in spending time in nature is welcome; no experience is necessary. Please bring water and wear long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from scratches and insect bites, and ensure you have sturdy footwear for safely navigating the forest terrain. While we will provide some gloves and tools, bringing your own is encouraged to ensure everyone is well-equipped.

Reflection Park is registered with the Montgomery County Volunteer Center, allowing us to approve Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. Encourage your teens to take part in this opportunity to learn and serve! Students under 18 are welcome with a parent or guardian.

Volunteer Roles (SSL-Compliant)

Volunteers with the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community (EESNC) support children, youth, and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as their families, through structured, supervised, and community-based activities.

All volunteer activities are conducted under the direct supervision of an EESNC staff member in public or designated program settings to ensure safety and compliance with SSL requirements.

All volunteer service is designed to be meaningful, structured, and developmentally supportive while maintaining full compliance with MCPS SSL guidelines.

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. Making snack bags is a great family and group volunteer opportunity. You will buy or collect the supplies and then decorate and assemble the bags for our residents!

AHC has three properties in Montgomery County. The on-site Resident Services teams organize a variety of fun and educational events. Snack bags help us fight food insecurity and encourage engagement.

Snack bags are paper lunch bags filled with a small water bottle and 3 small snack items (crackers, Goldfish, chips, cookies, etc). Decorating the bags is fun but optional, use your creativity!

Join Montgomery Parks & Neighbors of Northwest Branch at a volunteer park cleanup! Help beautify your community green spaces, keep litter out of our streams, and protect wildlife!  

*This cleanup will take place on steep and uneven terrain*  

Please click on the ‘Register’ button to sign up for the cleanup. Please note that when an event fills up, it disappears from the schedule. Cleanups will be added throughout the season, so check back often! We’ll send cleanup details to all registered volunteers on the week of the cleanup.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
