We are looking for reliable volunteers to help transport foster animals to and from adoption events, vet appointments, and foster homes.

We are looking for a volunteer to help with post-adoption follow-up calls. These calls ensure our adopted cats and dogs are adjusting well in their new homes and give families a chance to ask questions or share updates.

We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented volunteer to help write grants for our animal foster foundation. Your work will help secure funding to support foster care, medical care, and adoption programs for cats, dogs, and other animals in need.

MUM serves individuals and families in crisis in the Silver Spring, Wheaton, Takoma Park, Kensington, Rockville and Aspen Hill communities, specifically residents within eight zip codes of Montgomery County (20902, 20906, 20853, 20895, 20896, 20901, 20910, and 20912). MUM provides food assistance as well as financial assistance for eviction prevention, utility shut-off prevention/restoration and prescription medication

MUM needs volunteer drivers willing to pick-up rescued food from local partners in the Mid-County area and deliver to our office. Drivers need to have flexible hours, in most cases we are given short notice for pick-up. Driver must have a reliable car.

In order to meet increased demand for our services, MUM needs volunteers to help clients sign up for appointments, access the food pantry and to help with data entry and other tasks.  Volunteers should have good communication skills and are preferably bilingual English/Spanish speakers.  

Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Volunteers have an initial commitment period of one year and are requested to participate in at least one deployment per year. To help remove barriers to volunteering, approved travel expenses are paid or reimbursed by Humane World for Animals.

* Note - the location of our center in Northern Maryland is confidential, as animals in our custody who are involved in legal proceedings may be held there. It will be disclosed to volunteers prior to deployment.

We would like to bring physical activities to our clients in the areas of yoga, Pilates and aerobics. This would be in the evenings volunteering with small groups.

Piano Pals for ES Children:  Fox Chapel ES, Gaithersburg ES, Brown Station ES, Clopper Mill ES are reopening in October through Spring Break. Tanglewood HOC Apartments will continue on Saturday mornings.  Upcounty HOC at Stewartown begins on Tuesdays in October.   For training of new volunteers in order to mentor in the Fall 2025, contact: thetacyfoundation@gmail.com.  Dates/location by appointment.

Mentor a child per half hour session afterschool.  Using the detailed world renowned piano curriculum, Faber Piano Adventures,  teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at an elementary school or HOC facility.

Guitar Pals for ES Children:  Applications for Fall 2025 being received now.

Mentor a child at these facilities:

Brown Station ES on Mondays, Stewartown HOC on Tuesdays 4 to 5:30, Fox Chapel on Thursdays after school, Gaithersburg ES on Thursdays after school, Clopper Mill ES on Fridays after school, Tanglewood HOC on Saturdays from 11 to 12:30.

Using the detailed Faber Piano Adventures,   teach 2 children (each one half hour lesson) between grades K-5 at Tanglewood Housing for Title 1 families.

1.5 hours of SSL Credit

Adult supervision provided by Tacy Foundation Adult Volunteers, vetted by MCPS Adult Volunteer Requirements.

The Look Again Resale Shop has been supporting the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington's (POB) sight-saving programs since 1992 with the sale of antiques, furniture, collectibles, clothing, books and more. The store depends on the generosity of area residents for donations of gently used items, which are available for purchase at fantastic prices. All store proceeds go toward making POB's vision programs in the community a reality.

We ask volunteers to join us for 3-4 hour shifts. Volunteers use and develop retail experience including displaying and organizing merchandise. Volunteers also enjoy the social support of working on a close-knit team. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old (ages 12-16 may volunteer with a parent/guardian).

Great for retired individuals! We are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM - 5 PM.

Look Again Resale shop in Kensington Maryland is looking for volunteers for our thrift/antique shop.  If you love vintage clothing, hard to find treasures and collectables then Look again resale shop is the place for you! Proceeds from our shop benefits The Prevention of Blindness Metropolitan Washington.

Duties include:

Sorting and processing donations, Cleaning and organizing shop, carrying boxes of donations in from customers, Assisting with day to day functions of the store.  By the way we have fun giving back!

Join our team of dedicated volunteers who bring fresh, healthy and delicious meals from our Takoma Park kitchen to our homebound neighbors. Together, we are creating a more resilient, interconnected and compassionate community.

Each weekday, Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park and Silver Spring prepares two nourishing meals for hundreds of clients, helping them maintain their health and independence as they age, battle illness and recover from injuries. Demand for our services is rising -- tripling since 2020 -- and we're growing fast to meet the need.

Delivery volunteers pick up meals around noon and hand them to clients at their homes along routes designed to take less than 90 minutes. Volunteers often work in pairs, with one driving and the other running meals from the car to the neighbor's door. Volunteers can choose recurring shifts on the same route or sign up for one-time shifts as their schedule allows.

Note: Drivers use their own cars and must have a valid driver's license.

Help us feed neighbors in need by holding a canned food drive with your club, faith-based group, civic group, or business. Food drives are needed year round, not just at the holidays.

Won't you help us deliver groceries to low-income seniors who can't get out to a food pantry? Pick up food packages at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad on Friday afternoons and transport them to a low income senior citizen apartment building in the Bethesda area. Seniors are among the most vulnerable to food insecurity. Please help ensure they are receiving the food and nutrition they need to maintain their health and well-being.

Drive your own vehicle to transport food packages to area apartment buildings. May require indoor masking and lifting/carrying items up to 25 lbs. in weight.

Classics AAU Basketball is seeking volunteer coaches for its AAU club youth teams for 2025 and 2026 through out the year . Coaching commitment is typically two practices/week and then tournaments and league games on most weekends throughout the year. Coach travel and related expenses are reimbursable or deductible on taxes as a volunteer.

Must have at least experience of playing high school and/or college sports and a desire and commitment to coach youth sports. Basketball specific experience a plus. 

Must have clean background investigation through Lexis/Nexis and subject to AAU membership acceptance. 

Getting Into It: After an initial phone interview with AAU club president and other coach(es) as needed, we then follow-up by an in-situ evaluation on the court coaching practices of preferred age group/gender players. 

Must complete Positive Coaching Alliance and other AAU online courses in Youth Protection and AAU Coaches Excellence Course within 60 days

Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly, ham, turkey, etc) to share with the families we serve in our community in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A sandwich is a small way that we can bridge the distance between us and them and help them with their food insecurity.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making sandwiches until schools return to normal status.  10 sandwiches= 1 hour of service

Note:  Sandwiches should be made the day before.  Please do not make them in advance because they won't be at their best. The sandwiches should be made so that they are ready to eat.  Please add mayonnaise and mustard to the sandwiches with meat in them.  Cheese is welcome too.  There is a high demand for TURKEY sandwiches.  :)

Please note that if you are making more than 20 sandwiches that you should be making different types of sandwiches so that they are not all PB&J.

If you plan to make more than 60 sandwiches you must reach out to me to get my approval.  Please let me know how many sandwiches you are making and how many of each type.  

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

-Please document your sandwich making by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the bagged sandwiches once you've finished making them

-Make a log by writing down the date(s), the number of sandwiches made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it

-Make sandwiches and wrap each on individually using either wax paper or sandwich bags (no foil please)

-Use the bread bag to package them and label the outside of the bag with the type of sandwiches made.  

-Submit your photos, etc via the google form.

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the sandwiches you made and your log of the amounts of the items initialed by your parent.  Please submit your work via the form only once.  

Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator.  They will then credit your hours. 

DROPOFF

Sandwich donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your sandwiches in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us make frozen casseroles to share with food insecure families and individuals in our community.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made food insecure families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A casserole is a nice way to provide a hot meal for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making casseroles until schools return to normal status.  1 casserole= 1 hour of service

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

Favorite casseroles include: tuna casseroles, chili, mac and cheese, baked ziti, and chicken noodle, but all casseroles are loved!

-Please taking a photo of the casserole(s) being made and a photo of the completed casseroles

-Please use a disposable aluminum pans 9 x 13 for your dish.

-Please cook your casserole prior to freezing it.

-Please label each casserole with the name and the ingredients (for example: Chicken and Cheese Casserole: chicken,pasta, olive oil, onion, mushrooms, bread crumbs, butter, cheese). 

-Please wrap them well with aluminum foil. Please do not use the plastic cover that comes with some pans.

-Please write down the date, the number of casseroles made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it.

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

Casserole donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your casseroles in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship over a period of time between a youth and more knowledgeable and supportive person who provides consistent support, guidance and concrete help. Research has shown that mentors can have a significant positive impact on the life of a young person.

Mentoring programs operate at Twinbrook Elementary School, Meadow Hall Elementary School, and Beall Elementary School. If you are interested in being a mentor, you must complete an application and participate in a screening process.

The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Our goal is to help children learn about gardening and understand the importance of sustaining their environment.

Environmental Educator Assistants provide high-quality programming and interpretive experiences for our participants and guests. They both assist naturalists during various programs (school programs, scout programs, public programs, birthday parties, etc.) as well as design and facilitate independent interpretive stations. This position includes public speaking, program set-up/tear-down, animal handling, writing interpretive station outlines, and using biofacts (skulls, pelts, feathers, etc.).

Environmental Educator Assistants will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, comfort in working with all ages and abilities, and a passion for connecting with others. Volunteers will collaborate with nature center staff to develop and implement environmental education-themed activities for the general public and for special events at CCNC. Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Fingerprinting and background check are required as you will be working closely with children.

Trail Guardians help to keep the trails in our surrounding forest preserve clean and well maintained. This position includes picking up litter/recycling and keeping trail borders maintained. All work is done independently without the assistance of a naturalist.

Trail Guardians must demonstrate a love of the outdoors. Volunteers will receive an orientation course as well as direct guidance on where and when to perform the work. This position includes daily check-ins with the CCNC volunteer coordinator to determine work schedule, quality of work, hours worked, etc. Volunteers will be supervised by the volunteer coordinator and staff naturalists.

WAPO welcome youth musicians to join our team.

Students age from 12 to 22.

We have two concerts scheduled in Fall and Spring at Culture Center each year in Gaithersburg, and it is free to community and public.

Our youth musicians will perform with professional and amateur musicians and community choirs with classical and popular musical and songs.

Each concert has been introducing the music and enjoy the music with all music lovers at all age group.

Science is Elemental runs integrated science workshops. We want kids to have fun doing what they love to do such as art. music and sports, while learning some science. SIE's goal is to reach those kids that don't yet know that they like science. While we are thrilled to have high school students helping out, and welcome their participation, many of our workshops occur during the school day, when they are not available. SIE is seeking professionals with some time during the day. Retirees or near-retirees would be fantastic, particularly those with a science or engineering background. We currently need volunteers to monitor protective order hearings in Rockville or Silver Spring District Court for the morning sessions (8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) on weekdays.  You will always attend court with at least one other person and meet after the court session to ensure that you and your co-monitor have recorded the same factual information. If there are discrepancies, you will resolve those and adjust your forms before leaving the courthouse. This step is critical to the accuracy of our data and is not optional.

Volunteers should be available to come to court at least twice a month for a minimum of a year due to the learning curve and training involved.

Please note that court monitors collect data on physical paper forms (no electronics are allowed in the courtroom), scan them via a phone app or an actual scanner, and email them to our Data Analyst & Manager for review. We seek court monitors who:

Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

Come out and help care for our animals.  Our Saturday workdays involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water buckets and troughs, keeping pastures maintained, and performing regular animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, regular exams, giving shots, hoof trims, and more.

We have quite a number of elderly and special needs animals at our sanctuary, and are looking for someone who is specifically interested in and capable of assisting with their care several times a week on an ongoing basis.  Responsibilities include: 

- Giving oral medication as instructed

- Administering shots (IM and SubQ) as instructed

- Bandaging 

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

- Keeping detailed observation notes

Additional duties could include: 

- transport of animals to local veterinarians

- light cleaning of their housing areas and replenishing waters

One-on-one volunteers serve adult consumers who are blind or visually impaired.
CLB’s volunteer readers read in-person inside the homes of adults who are blind or visually impaired.  CLB and its volunteer program serve the entire Washington, DC Region.  They read the consumers' mail and/or paper documents.  Volunteers might take the consumers to the grocery stores, too.
Volunteers in the program, contribute at least four hours a month of time, must be 18 years of age, and approved background checks, as well as attend a virtual orientation.

Seeking individual who has experience and/or interest in grant writing and research for an established (and growing!) non-profit organization dedicated to providing yoga and mindfulness education services to schools and programs for babies through teens in the DMV. 

You will work closely with a member of our the Create Calm admin team, and you will be able to schedule your own hours/days and mostly work from home. 

To support all the students (ages 18-25) requesting help, we are seeking volunteers who could commit to 2-3 hours per week for a commitment of 3 months helping students in their efforts to obtain an internship or job.

People Animals Love (PAL) needs additional volunteer teams to serve our partners across Maryland. Places we visit include Adventist HealthCare, Montgomery Hospice, JSSA Hospice, retirement/assisted living facilities, libraries, schools, correctional facilities, and hospitals. Harvest Intercontinental Church in Olney, Maryland serves the mid county region providing food and other vital services to residents every week. Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Saturday mornings delivering to designated sites and homebound residents.

Help is needed on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1pm for pickup/deliver boxes of groceries and other essential items to residents in several Mid County communities. 

The hub volunteer coordinator will contact each person to provide additional information. Specific instructions will be given when you arrive at the distribution site. Volunteers may pick up boxes at 16227 Batchellors Forest Rd, Olney, Maryland 20832. Delivery is contact-less.  Drivers must be at least 18 years of age.

FourNineFive Legacy Volleyball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal growing boys volleyball by affording players from families with limited financial resources opportunities to play.  We are looking for student volunteers to serve as Marketing & Social Media Managers to help develop social media marketing content and campaigns to increase visibility, engagement, and community involvement. This internship is designed specifically for students eager to explore the world of media production, content creation, social media, communications or marketing.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the production of multimedia content such as videos and social media posts.

Participate in brainstorming sessions for content ideas and campaign strategies.

Help with editing tasks for videos and audio content.

Support the social media team in content scheduling and community engagement efforts.

Qualifications:

A qualified candidate has excellent communication skills, is technology savvy, can work independently, and interested in working for a 501c3 nonprofit. Candidates must have access to a computer and reliable internet access. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of social media eg Facebook, Twitter/X, Linked In and Instagram plus blogs and other communication platforms, a plus.

Familiarity with the sport of volleyball.

Comfort working or learning Google Suite including: Google Docs, Forms etc. This role is best for a very creative self-starter who has ability and initiative to work independently from home.

We will award SSL hours according to the following equivalency:

1 marketing collateral created (e.g., flyer, brochure, etc.) = 2 SSL hours

1 social media post = 1 hour

1 marketing video created = 4 SSL hours

Volunteers will also attend check-in meetings with our core team through a virtual platform (Google Meet) using their personal/private accounts and SSL hours will also be granted for meetings (1 meeting hour = 1 SSL hour). Initial appointment rank upon selection is commensurate with knowledge and experience. Volunteers with one year of active, high-quality service to Elevate the Future Maryland will automatically be promoted to Level 2 (senior) rank.

Developers will create educational materials for business curricula. This includes slide presentations, example activities, and extension activities. The Business Education Department may also host educational events and competitions, including but not limited to guest speaker seminars, pitch contests, and entrepreneurship-oriented summer camps, for which developers are permitted to instruct.

Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

Miracle League Buddies are volunteers ranging in age from elementary school to senior citizens.  These include family members, individuals, and local youth and civic groups.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.”  Many people refer to the Buddy volunteers as “Angels in the Outfield.”   Buddies can bring their own equipment but that is not required. What is required is to provide smiles and laughter to the Miracle League Players.

The minimum age for a Buddy is 13.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.  The goals for Miracle League Buddies are:

We have volunteer opportunities in the Fall and Spring seasons on Saturday and Sunday.

Got a group that wants to volunteer? 

KEEN has opportunities on the weekends from September through June. In Montgomery County, those opportunities are mostly on Sundays at KEEN Sports for Kids, Teens or Young Adults. (Ask about other opportunities as well.) 

During KEEN's Sports Programs, athletes (KEEN's young people with disabilities, ages 5-25) and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities in a group setting. Together they do individual activities that are tailored solely to the needs of the athlete. They may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball, or they may take a walk around the outdoor track. Many love to bounce on 36" balls or be pulled along the floor on a flat wheeled scooter. A group may form for Duck, Duck, Goose. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle (although some athletes still need to run around its periphery, and that's okay) and sharing with the group what they did that day "that made them very Proud." They literally go out dancing: the Hokey Pokey for the younger kids and the Macarena for the teens and young adults. Athletes burn energy, meet and interact with new volunteers, see old friends, and then rejoin their parents, who have had some precious respite time. 5. Write about your Piano Pals® or Guitar Pals® or Reading Express® Your Reflections may be about a particular life lesson that you taught this fall or last year during the holiday season. Tell about how your young student saw the world of holidays through his or her eyes. Your writing may reflect (1) a change in your idea of community service, (2) what you discovered that you did not know before you taught (Write about this in regard to the children whom you are serving), and/or (3) the importance of music in the lives of the children you are working with. It may include a particularly difficult challenge that you faced or are facing in working with children. The piece may be about how you discovered a side of yourself you had not known before these music classes. Relate how you would like to take what you learned into the world to share with others and to serve again. (1 SSL hour after it is published online or in the Newsletter). Serving the community groceries for over 13 years, Clifton Park Baptist Church has partnered with the county to become one of eight consolidation hubs to distribute food and other essentials as a result of the pandemic. There are six food distributions a month including a Wednesday distribution which serves about 550 households, the first Saturday that serves about 300 households, and a TEFAP distribution which serves 30-50 households. Groceries and diapers are distributed to community members who walk-up and drive up as well as through community partners. Clifton Park Baptist Church partners with 7 other local organizations, nonprofits and other churches who receive food at our location for their clients who are in need.   

Help is needed for our weekly FOOD PACKING:

Volunteer to pack bags of fresh produce on WEDNESDAYS (10:00AM – 2:30PM) for partner distributions within the community. Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move 10-15 pounds repeatedly. Specific instructions provided upon arrival.

Heart pillows are ideal for those who received surgical procedures near the underarm, and can act as a protective barrier between sensitive areas and the car seatbelt. Volunteers may choose to make sewn or crocheted heart-shaped pillows to show patients that we care!

NOTE: We do NOT accept no-sew pillows.

We welcome unisex colors and patterns (NO holiday or religious patterns, as noted in our project guidelines) and recommend a size of 9 x 9 inches, using cotton fabric for sewn pillows. For the safety of our recipients, please use new and unused materials.Please do not superglue pillows. Pillows must be sewn following the tutorials below, without stuffing coming out. The Civic Circle has an opening on our Youth Council, a volunteer position that involves volunteering at Civic Circle events, promoting and supporting our organization as an ambassador in the community, and helping ensure that our programs are responsive to and relevant to Montgomery County’s youth. Help welcome refugee youth to Maryland! Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resume, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. 

The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or higher education. 

Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Volunteers are encouraged to meet youth outside of their homes at coffee shops or in public places.

Time commitment: 10 hours per month for 6 months, although this time commitment is very flexible. If you are interested in using your knowledge of your community to help newcomers to Maryland, please respond!

This opportunity may be virtually only, in person, or hybrid.   

As a Community Bridges (CB) mentor, you will be matched one-on-one with a high school-aged participant in our program for one academic year (September or month of match-June) with the option to extend. Through a closely formed relationship, your time and support can help empower your mentee to be a successful student, an engaged community member, and a confident leader. In return, we hope you gain personal fulfillment as a contributor to the community and the future generation of female leaders. 

In 1997, CB was founded with the vision for an inclusive community where each person is valued and has abundant opportunities to improve themselves and the world around them. The CB Mentor Program continues this quest with the aim for mentors, mentees, staff, and organizational practices to promote accessibility, cultural humility, and more equitable distribution of resources. We acknowledge the historical exclusion of marginalized groups, particularly Women, People of Color, Indigenous people, gender expansive individuals, and people with learning differences. Thus, all members of the Mentor Program are asked to: 

This year, Community Bridges served 464 students in grades 4-12. 96% of our students are first-generation with 44% of families identifying as Hispanic and 42% as Black or African. The most reported languages spoken at home are Spanish, Amharic, and French. Ideal mentors are young professionals and leaders who have experience and are comfortable working within these communities. We are looking for mentors to have critical conversations with their mentees surrounding topics, but not limited to, social injustice, racism, and healthy relationships. Hughes United Methodist Church serves as one of seven Montgomery County Consolidated Services Hubs delivering food assistance and other vital services to a growing number of Mid County residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Hughes has provided more than 900,000 pounds of free groceries to 36,000 households. The needs continue to grow and we appreciate your interest.

ENERGETIC VOLUNTEERS are needed to help distribute food, they are assigned a station in which they will help our clients to classify the food they require. The activity takes place indoors and involves standing for at least 2 hours and lifting up to 35 pounds. Volunteers must dress accordingly.

COVID-19: Physical distancing protocols are followed to provide a safe environment for everyone.  All volunteers must complete a temperature check upon arrival in order to sign in for their shift. Gloves are provided, but you must bring and wear your own mask.

The Mid-County Consolidation Hub at Hughes United Methodist Church provides a variety of goods and services to more than 800 households each week, including home deliveries to seniors, single parent households, and those without transportation. 

Using your own vehicle, drive bags of food and other essential items and deliver outside a family's door. Bags will be loaded into your car and you will receive a list of addresses (usually 4 to 6 depending on the number of client referrals and drivers signed up for the day). Volunteers drop off at the client's doorstep and send a text saying that their food was delivered. Deliveries are in nearby Wheaton/Glenmont and Silver Spring, and typically take an hour to complete (up to two at most). 

Drivers enter the Hughes United Methodist Church lot from Windham Lane and pull up in front of the metal stairs that lead to the gym.  Must be adults (over 18) and sign a liability waiver, and should be comfortable lifting up to 20-25 pounds.
