In the middle of August we'll begin another great Coyotes Cross Country season for kids ages 5 to 14 (elementary and middle school kids).  Practice will be every Tuesday and Thursday at Rocky Hill Middle School from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, as well as Sunday afternoons at 2:00 -- somewhere fun -- if we don’t have a meet.  We’ll participate in 6 or 7 local league meets on Sunday afternoons beginning in the middle of September.  Our last regular season meet will likely be early November.  Many of our kids will participate in “post season” which will include a national championship meet in late November or early December.

High school students can earn SSL hours by assisting at practices and/or meets under a lead coach's supervision.  The Junior Coach commitment is super-flexible.  Attend practices/meets as often or as little as you'd like.  We offer a great environment for high school students to both gain coaching experience and serve younger children in the community.  Students will lead warm-up runs, facilitate running drills and stretches, assist with conversational pace runs, and time the kids doing speed workouts.  Are you fast?  You'll likely help with our 13 & 14 year-olds.  Not all that fast?  You'll help with the youngest kids.  Helping kids grow and achieve great things is a very rewarding experience.  Coyotes Cross Country is the 2024 AAU Maryland Team Champion -- both boys and girls.  And our 7&8 year-old boys are 2024 AAU National Champions.  Let's go!

The Tacy Foundation proposes to encourage selected student volunteers to interview and write the stories of the incredible seniors who have built and maintained the communities where we are now privileged to live. We hope to discover and share seniors’ stories of personal, family, and work lives in the past decades. They are the heroes who, despite huge life challenges, have raised families, created charitable organizations, served their neighborhoods with vigilance for all families, and contributed with integrity through their professions and community service.   

 

Capturing the stories of seniors has sparked the interest of a number of young musicians. The teens' stellar efforts to bring hope and memory to seniors with their music and conversations through the past 12 years have inspired us all.  Youth have learned that these precious people are most interesting, well-educated, appreciative of youth, and devoted parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

 

To receive SSL hours, the student must be directly supervised by a Tacy Foundation adult volunteer or an assisted living staff member while interviewing the seniors. The interviews must be held in a public space, that is, a common area of the assisted living facility.  This requirement is designed for the student's safety. The student can draft the actual article at home.  He or she will then submit the article to the Tacy Foundation Director for review. When an article is ready, it will be published in the Foundation’s monthly newsletter.  It will also be offered to the senior facility’s newsletter for their residents and staff.  


SSL Credit is based on the hours for the interview and equivalent time writing the life story of the senior.  SSL credit will be determined as follows:

SSL Hours will be based on the length of the actual interview, some longer and some shorter than others.  Students will earn hour-for-hour the time spent conducting the interview. 

SSL Hours of transcribing the interview will vary, depending on the length of the interview.  

1 Hour of SSL Credit for transcribing 1 hour of interview.  2 hours of transcription for 2 hours of interview, and so on. 



Any photos require pre-approval by the family and senior facilities.

Choose When You Tutor One Hour, Twice a Week

The STEMx Tutors program is designed for busy professionals like you. As a STEMx Tutor, you commit to tutoring one hour, twice a week. EnCorps utilizes a 2:1 or 1:1 student-to-tutor ratio. 


As a 2:1 tutor, tutoring sessions take place for one hour, at the same time, twice a week between 12:00 - 5:30 p.m. PST. In turn, the 1:1 tutor, you will determine the day and time of your virtual tutoring sessions with your student


We ask that you commit to tutoring for a minimum of one semester with the option to renew. Many of our tutors have been in the program for four years.


EnCorps Support

EnCorps provides its volunteer tutors with training and support. Your dedicated Program Coordinator will provide you access to our Google Classroom where you will find a plethora of resources, invite you to online seminars, and offer the option to join our annual Learning Summit where you can network with other tutors as well as STEM professional who are exploring STEM teaching through the EnCorps STEM Teachers program.

Have a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (does not have to be in a STEM field) and have at least 1 year of hands-on STEM industry work experience or have an advanced degree in a STEM field

Hold a professional certificate in a STEM field and have at least 1 year of hands-on STEM work experience

A current or former credentialed math teacher


All candidates must also be eligible to work in the US and currently live in the US

Volunteer: Bone Builders Volunteer Leader - East County Community Recreation Center Site

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at East County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

We are looking for student volunteers to serve as Growth & Fundraising Managers to help 1) increase our presence in the local community and 2) develop fundraising activity plans and donation campaigns.

If you are interested in earning SSL hours for this activity, please let us know. We will review your activity or campaign plans (template for content creation will be provided) and approve them for execution within the organization by our core team. Once we have reviewed your submissions, we will award SSL hours according to the following equivalency:

One fundraising activity strategy outline = 2 SSL hours One donation campaign plan = 3 SSL hours Fundraising database = 10 SSL hours

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at White Oak Community Center in Silver Spring, MD. The Tacy Foundation receives video recordings from volunteers for hospitals and seniors in the metropolitan area of Washington/Baltimore/Wilmington/Philadelphia/New York City, the Northeast corridor. The YouTube playlists are also sent nationwide to Fisher Houses and hospitals wherever requested.  Children are invited to participate in the recording and distribution for these musical gifts. The Foundation is dedicated to sending sounds of hope and healing through music.  1 hour of SSL Credit per video.  Songs must be at least late elementary/intermediate level and range from 3 to 10 minutes in length.). Public Domain status or written permission from the publisher are required.

Each year over 300 videos are placed on a new playlist for the purpose of sending hope and healing into the communities. (2) The Tacy Foundation sponsors live music performances at NIH Clinical Research Center's Hall of Hope & Seniors Centers, and acts as liaison for American Red Cross Teen Pianists at Walter Reed-Bethesda Lobby of the America Building.   (2.0 hours of ssl credit per concert.)

(3) The Tacy Foundation sponsors Piano Pals, an internship program for teen pianists to mentor elementary school children who cannot afford music lessons at some elementary public schools' aftercare programs in Montgomery County, MD.  (1.5 hours  of SSL credit per session)

(4) The Reading Express brings a story to life through children's books. Volunteers are needed to supervise craft tables at the library and help with cleanup following the event. 5. Piano Pals® Training for Elementary School Children in Title 1
Schools: For Grades 3-5. This online class serves as preparation for mentoring when schools open and children will attend the afterschool program. Should schools be closed to afterschool activities, these classes will resume until schools open.

6. Schools: For Grades 3-5. This online class serves as preparation for mentoring when schools open and children will attend the afterschool program. Should schools be closed to afterschool activities, these classes will resume until schools open.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. It features innovative activities, video demonstrations, and mentor tips from the nation’s trauma experts and survivors. PFA online also offers a Learning Community where participants can share about experiences using PFA in the field, receive guidance during times of disaster, and obtain additional resources and training.

Participants open a learning account at Psychological First Aid (PFA) Online | The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (nctsn.org)

The course can be completed in small blocks of time or as time permits.

Upon completion of the course and passing the exam, participants are provided with a certificate of completion of the PFA Course that they must email to pandreasonmd@gmail.com to receive 5 SSL hours.

A completed and signed SSL certificate (form 560-61) will be provided via email after receipt of the PFA Certificate of completion.

Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:


#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.


#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

A student’s parent/guardian must provide our organization with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.


Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:


#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.


#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, and around the horses. We offer comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your mentoring role. Additionally, working closely with our participants and other volunteers is a unique and enriching experience that fosters personal growth and community development.

The Job Readiness program runs weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.
