Oak Chapel Food Hub helps people in these situations. Each week, we fill 60 bags with produce, bread and staples, customized to the families' preferences where possible. Where we need your help is in getting this food to the people we have promised it to. Volunteers must: Have a car capable of holding 10 bags of groceries. A good driving record. Be able to carry paper grocery bags that are sometimes heavy. If you have someone you can team with, one person can drive and the other can carry the bags to the doors.What volunteering entails: 8-10 bags will be ready for you to pick up between 11 and 1 on Wednesdays. They are welcome to stay longer to help out with our other day activities. The best ages for this opportunity are ages 16-18. Volunteer: Puppy/Whelping Watcher Volunteers Needed!Whelping/Puppy Watcher Volunteers support WCC’s Breeding Program by assisting with daily tasks to maintain a clean and safe Puppy Enrichment Center (PEC). We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training. For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Parent homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC and are taken on weekly outings to public places where they learn to use their training in real-life situations. Puppy Parents raise our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. This volunteer position offers volunteers the opportunity to progress from our entry level Tier 1, where volunteers will be washing bowls, filling Kongs, and filling water buckets, up to Tier 2 where volunteers will have the opportunity to walk, bathe and do enrichment with our Service Dogs in Training. To become a Canine Care Volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old, or 12 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian and attend a Canine Care Volunteer Orientation that takes place monthly in person at our Healing Quarters in Boyds, MD. This orientation is designed to familiarize you with our mission, and expectations and guidelines of our operations so you are equipped with the context and information in anticipation for your first shift. This orientation is designed to familiarize you with our mission, and expectations and guidelines of our operations so you are equipped with the context and information in anticipation for your first shift. Through dedicated and well-trained volunteers, we monitor and collect data on protective order hearings in Montgomery County District Court, use our findings to identify and recommend needed improvements in policy and practice, and hold judges and court personnel accountable for providing a safe and respectful court environment. Since our founding in 2011, Court Watch Montgomery (CWM) has monitored more than 11,000 hearings and our resulting reports and recommendations make an impact. We found in 2022 that “staggered exits” – a recognized best practice to protect victims at the end of a protective order hearing – were being enforced only 39% of the time. We reported this finding to the public and to the court and saw an immediate increase, to 59%, in 2023. We also reported in 2023 that petitioners are far more likely to receive a final protective order when they appear in court with an advocate or attorney, highlighting a critical resource need in the county. Most recently, CWM reported on the use of gun-related best practices in protective order hearings, helping to inform the public about an issue that is the focus of a high profile Supreme Court case (Rahimi). The CWM board defines the organization’s mission and vision, develops short- and long-term plans to carry out the mission, and sets policies for effective management. Resource development and fundraising to support CWM operations are key functions of the board. Friendly Caller Chair Description: Chairs Rockville Meals on Wheels Friendly Caller program, which provides 10-20 minute friendly, social phone conversations to Rockville Meals on Wheels clients. Currently RMoW has approximately 85 clients, 5-10 of whom participate in the Friendly Caller program. Chairpeople-of-the-Day or COD's, act as a sort of office manager and are in many ways the public face of Rockville Meals on Wheels. Duties include receiving meals from our supplier, answering phone calls, managing volunteers, and doing some light paperwork. If interested, you'll receive on-the-job training from one of our current COD's. Duties can be shared and teams or couples are welcome! Hours are 7:30am-12:00pm, one day a week. NOTE: Due to the vulnerable nature of our population, and required training, we do not accept volunteers with court mandated service hours. Right now we are in need of SUBSTITUTE CODs. We serve the greater Washington DC area and operate our live musical programs at Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda, MD. We are seeking several new Board members with a passion to support and provide inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities.
