Volunteer: Volunteer Needed: Green Entrepreneurship, Careers, and Tree Planting Initiative

Are you passionate about the environment and eager to make a positive impact? Join us in our Green Entrepreneurship Program, Green Careers initiative, Tree Planting, and other sustainability efforts. Your involvement will help shape a greener, more sustainable future for our community!

Together, let’s grow a brighter, greener tomorrow!

This opportunity is hybrid and will operate both in-person and virtually/remotely.

Our nonprofit organization, Live Peace Tech Corporation, will be engaging with students through a live virtual platform (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, etc.).

We will provide direct supervision by an adult nonprofit representative (who is not the student’s parent/guardian or relative) in any virtual space (including breakout sessions) for the entire session.

Please review the following information while considering this opportunity

A student’s parent/guardian must provide our organization with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.

Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:

#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.

#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Volunteer: Drivers & Movers Needed to help make a house a home for our clients!

Hello! We are looking for some help picking up the donations we receive. We need drivers/movers to drive their own cars or our rental vehicles to pick up donations of furniture and household goods all over Montgomery County and bring them to our storage facility in Aspen Hill. We ask that donations already be out of the house and on the porch for our volunteers to pick up. You can volunteer in a group or we can pair you with a partner. We can use your help as often as you want to come - on an ongoing basis or just one time. Check out our website to see how we create happy, functional homes for our clients!

Volunteer: Help Homebound Neighbors in 20906 by Delivering Bags of Produce and Groceries.

We have an urgent need for drivers in August and September!

If you have 2-3 hours free on a Wednesday, in the late morning or early afternoon, you can make a big difference to our neighbors in need.

Seniors, families without child care or cars, and disabled individuals,  cannot take advantage of most food distribution options.  Imagine trying to take a bus to pick up free food if you had toddlers, or used a wheelchair, or had an invalid spouse at home you had to care for!

Oak Chapel Food Hub helps people in these situations. Each week, we fill 60 bags with produce, bread and staples, customized to the families' preferences where possible.  Where we need your help is in getting this food to the people we have promised it to.

Volunteers must:

Have a car capable of holding 10 bags of groceries. A good driving record. Be able to carry paper grocery bags that are sometimes heavy. If you have someone you can team with, one person can drive and the other can carry the bags to the doors.

What volunteering entails:

8-10 bags will be ready for you to pick up between 11 and 1 on Wednesdays. The bags will be pre-packed and a Hub volunteer will help you load the bags. The pickup location is Oak Chapel United Methodist Church, 14500 Layhill Road, near Layhill Road, Rt. 200, and Longmead Crossing Drive. You will deliver the bags to the individual addresses, ring the bell, and leave the bag at the door. Some addresses are at garden apartments up a few steps, some are inside apartment buildings with elevators and some are at private homes. All addresses are in 20906, within a few miles of Oak Chapel Hub. We do ask that bags be delivered quickly after being picked up so that food that needs to be kept cold can get back into the refrigerator. Delivery of your bags will take approximately two hours after picking up.

To get started, or to ask questions, reach out to ocumhub@gmail.com with the words "Food Delivery Driver" (or "I want to earn my angel wings!") in the subject line.  You can sign up for an occasional shift or, if it suits you better, you can help every week.

There is a little bit of a process in getting started so please contact us soon!

Volunteer: Intergenerational Discussion

This is a wonderful opportunity for different generations of people to interact. We thought it would be very productive to have a student/students ask some of our clients for advice. We have clients who love to share their expertise on certain subjects. Someone could ask a client for advice on things such as hobbies, school, careers, or just being an adult. A student volunteer can come one time, or multiple times to interact with different clients. They are welcome to stay longer to help out with our other day activities. The best ages for this opportunity are ages 16-18. If a student is a few years younger, they would need a parent/chaperone to be with them while they are here.

Volunteer: Puppy Parents/ Raisers Needed - Raise and Train a Service Dog for a Veteran!

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Parent homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC and are taken on weekly outings to public places where they learn to use their training in real-life situations.

Puppy Parents raise our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training:

Provide a stable, safe, consistent and loving environment Provide the dog with access to new places, new people and new experiences Supervise the dog throughout the day Teach the dog manners and basic commands Keep the dog on a leash at all times or supervised in a securely fenced area Closely monitor the dog’s progress and submit monthly reports Attend weekly training classes, including social outings that build skills and confidence Provide the dog with age-appropriate socialization opportunities Ensure that the WCC dog is the only dog under the age of one in your home Agree to return the dog upon request Transport the dog to the veterinarian when necessary Depending on program location, you may be required to drop off/pick up the dog at the training office during the workweek.
*Some locations require the puppy parent to take the service dog in training to work.

Click here to learn more:  http://www.warriorcanineconnection.org/get-involved/become-a-puppy-parent/

or please fill out a volunteer application at the bottom of this page on our website that outlines all other opportunities available at WCC.

This is a big commitment, but we offer flexibility.  We often need puppy starters who can commit to raising the puppy from 8 weeks to 6 months of age.  Also, you can think about raising as a team, such as a child/parent team or 2 colleagues/friends who will share in the commitment.

Volunteer: Would you like to help DOGS and CATS get ADOPTED?!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers that would like to be Cat Adoption Coordinators!  We are a foster-based rescue in the VA, MD, DC area that pulls kittens and cats from high kill shelters across the rural south and places them in foster care to get adopted!  We need volunteers willing to train to become Dog and Cat Adoption Coordinators and help us get these wonderful animals adopted!

Interested in learning more - reach out to volunteering@luckydoganimalrescue.org and we will send you info on our next AC information session/training!

About the Adoption Coordinator (AC) role:

What is it?

Adoption Coordinators are the main advocates for our dogs and cats!  They not only work to match our animals with potential adopters, but they also serve as a critical resource to our foster parents. ACs choose the animals they want to be responsible for, ensure they are properly posted online, and discuss them with interest adopters. ACs review ALL applications that come in for those animals -- and if they are not previously pre-approved, ensure that we complete a vet check and landlord check (if applicable), conduct a phone screen, and, when needed, find a home visit volunteer.

Time Commitment?

Adoption Coordinators are one of our most important groups of volunteers.  Typically, ACs dedicate anywhere from 5-15 hours a week to Lucky Dog. Having regular access to email is super important!

Adoption Coordinators are also required to attend at least 2 adoption events per month and 1 transport per month. This is a great opportunity to meet your dogs and cats and chat with their fosters!

Training Needed?

All Adoption Coordinators go through a virtual AC training and shadow at one of our Sunday adoption events. Once they have completed that, they will go through a mentoring phase before they work on their own.

Volunteer: Help Honor Military Veterans in Hospice Care!

Hospice Volunteers play an important role as part of JSSA Hospice’s interdisciplinary team by supporting a patient and their family at end of life. Whether this is done remotely or in person, hospice volunteers enhance the experience of patients and families with their compassion and supportive presence. They provide in person visits from initial admission to our service, to the last days and hours of life by sitting with patients and families to ensure they are never alone.

Although we are looking for every type of hospice volunteer, this opportunity is for military members who currently serve or have served for our We Honor Veterans program. The program is a collaboration between the national Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It’s purpose is to care for and honor those who have served when they reach end of life.

As part of the program, we recognize Veterans with a “Pinning Ceremony” where their military service and sacrifices are publicly recognized. They receive tokens of appreciation from their Hospice team to include a U.S flag pin, certificate of thanks and a small flag inspired blanket.

We are also recruiting for our Veteran to Veteran program where Active Duty members or Veterans serve as friendly visitors to our Hospice Veterans offering companionship, socialization and a supportive presence.

We serve a very diverse population of patients and their families in all areas of Montgomery County and we look forward to hearing from you! Please fill out our volunteer application,

or reach us at 301-816-2676, option 2, and ask for the Hospice Volunteer Department or email the team at HospiceVC@jssa.org

Volunteer: Volunteer Cosmetologists to cut Hospice patients' hair in Montgomery County, MD

JSSA Hospice, a nonprofit that cares for patients in hospice care and their families is seeking volunteers to provide in-home haircuts to patients throughout Montgomery County. Volunteers must be licensed cosmetologists and be vaccinated against COVID-19 and have proof of current influenza immunization.

Hospice Volunteers play an important role as part of JSSA Hospice’s interdisciplinary team by supporting a patient and their family at end of life. Whether this is done remotely or in person, hospice volunteers enhance the experience of patients and families with their compassion and supportive presence. They are vital in observing and noting signs of physical and emotional change in patients that the nursing, social work and spiritual care coordinators need to know, in order to provide the highest possible level of care.

Volunteers provide in person visits from initial admission to our service, to the last days and hours of life, sitting with patients and families, to ensure they are never alone. They bring comfort, respite, and companionship at a time when a compassionate presence is critically needed. Licensed cosmetologist volunteers play a unique role in ensuring the dignity of the patient, bringing joy and promoting their self-esteem.

After going through an orientation, volunteers would work with a coordinator to schedule a time to visit a patient. Patients will generally be in a bed or reclining in a chair and most patients are unable to leave their home to get a haircut due to their health status.

We are looking for all hospice volunteers but need Cosmetologist volunteers throughout the county, including private homes, senior living facilities and nursing homes. Volunteers may provide companionship at facilities or private residences, abiding by current COVID safety requirements.

Hospice Volunteers play an important role as part of JSSA Hospice’s interdisciplinary team by supporting a patient and their family at end of life. Whether this is done remotely or in person, hospice volunteers enhance the experience of patients and families with their compassion and supportive presence. They are vital in observing and noting signs of physical and emotional change in patients that the nursing, social work or spiritual care coordinator should note.

They provide in person visits from initial admission to our service, to the last days and hours of life by sitting with patients and families to ensure they are never alone.

Volunteers bring comfort, respite, and companionship at a time when compassionate support is critically needed.

We are looking for all hospice volunteers, but are in need of volunteers in UpCounty and East County areas in particular. We serve a very diverse population of patients and their families in all areas of Montgomery County, and we look forward to hearing from you! Please ask our Volunteer Coordinator team about the many ways we are keeping our hospice volunteers happy, healthy and safe!

For more information email hospicevc@jssa.org or

call 301-816-2676, option 2 and ask for Volunteer Dept.

Volunteer: Join our Board of Directors!

Court Watch Montgomery is Recruiting Board Members!

We are a small nonprofit with a big mission: to ensure safety and access to justice for survivors of intimate partner violence in Montgomery County. Through dedicated and well-trained volunteers, we monitor and collect data on protective order hearings in Montgomery County District Court, use our findings to identify and recommend needed improvements in policy and practice, and hold judges and court personnel accountable for providing a safe and respectful court environment.

Since our founding in 2011, Court Watch Montgomery (CWM) has monitored more than 11,000 hearings and our resulting reports and recommendations make an impact. We found in 2022 that “staggered exits” – a recognized best practice to protect victims at the end of a protective order hearing – were being enforced only 39% of the time. We reported this finding to the public and to the court and saw an immediate increase, to 59%, in 2023. We also reported in 2023 that petitioners are far more likely to receive a final protective order when they appear in court with an advocate or attorney, highlighting a critical resource need in the county. Most recently, CWM reported on the use of gun-related best practices in protective order hearings, helping to inform the public about an issue that is the focus of a high profile Supreme Court case (Rahimi).

The CWM board defines the organization’s mission and vision, develops short- and long-term plans to carry out the mission, and sets policies for effective management. Resource development and fundraising to support CWM operations are key functions of the board. We are seeking to expand our board and are committed to having a team with diverse skills, experiences, and abilities. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and communities, and we especially encourage those with lived experience and skills in fundraising/resource development, finance/accounting, or advocacy/policy, to apply. Interviews will be held with current CWM board members and our Executive Director.

Please submit a resume and letter of interest to: lchatmon@courtwatchmontgomery.org

Volunteer: Join the Chevy Chase Library Advisory Committee!

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours. See guidelines for agencies on how opportunities may be considered for SSL.

Library Advisory Committees are an amazing, low burden volunteer opportunity that have a big impact on their libraries and the library system. Chevy Chase Library no longer has an active LAC, and I'm looking to restart it. One of the best parts of working in Montgomery County Public Libraries is the Library Board and LAC structure. I'm passionate about including community members and help making our library the best it can be.

Here's what you can expect:

Regular meetings that last about an hour. Most LACs meet monthly or every other month. Communication from me about the library and requests for feedback. Opportunities for more volunteer hours such as drafting recruitment fliers and/or visiting the community on the LAC's behalf.

If you are even slightly interested but have reservations, do not hesitate to contact me. You can call/text me at 202-868-2657 or you can email me at patrick.fromm@montgomerycountymd.gov. I'd love to chat about the LAC and if you'd like being a member.

Volunteer: Train to be a Bone Builders Volunteer Leader

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors in a community center setting. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.
