Volunteer: Cards of Support for Families in Minneapolis school community

                                    CARDS for Minneapolis Families

Make beautiful cards for the families in Minneapolis whose children were terrified by an attack on Wednesday, August 27th, as they participated in their school morning activities.

Send a beautiful card with a message of "We are sending you our love and support" or "Here is my wish of support for all of you who were directly and indirectly impacted by a sudden act of violence resulting in the death and injury of your community's innocent children."

Remind our neighbors who are far away that we are with them in spirit.  We are thinking of them in their sadness.  Tell them that we care for them and their families.  They are not alone.

Of course, your own words are most meaningful because you are so young and so strong in showing your care for others.

Do not use your name.  Sign the card with "A child in Maryland or Virginia or DC"  or "A teen in Maryland, Virginia DC."

15 cards per 1 hour of SSL Credit.

You make an impact at a very critical time in these families' lives.

Charlotte Holliday

We are printing QR code Cards with our music for them to hear and be comforted through this dark storm.  Be the sunshine in their lives as they face the future shaken from this act of terror.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
After each Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) bed build, all built bed material (headboards, side rails, slats, etc.) needs to be transported from the build site and organized in our Gaithersburg storage unit. We are looking for reliable volunteers to meet us at the storage facility, help unload the bed parts from our transport vehicle, and store them neatly inside the unit. This is a short but essential role that keeps our future deliveries running smoothly and ensures we are ready for the next bed delivery.

**Please Note** We are expecting this to take between 30 minutes to an hour, but we are providing a time window (earliest to latest) since actual start and end times may vary slightly depending on when the build wraps up and transport arrives.

Volunteer Role:

Meeting us at the Gaithersburg storage unit at the scheduled timeUnloading bed parts from the SHP transport vehicleCarrying and stacking materials inside the storage unit for easy accessWorking as part of a small, friendly team

Requirements:

Able to lift and carry wood bed materials Comfortable with light physical work for 30 minutes to an hour or so, depending on the size of the volunteer group and material to be stored (opportunity depends on truck arrival time but expected to be between 3:30-4:00pm window for arrival)Punctual and dependable

Additional Information

Rain or Shine (we’ll reschedule for heavy storms) Teens welcome with adult supervision Registration is required – sign up on our website to receive full event details and updates Event Vibe: Productive, grateful, and joyful — Do good. Be good. Feel good.

Why it Matters

Every bed we deliver means more than just a better night’s sleep — it gives a child a space of their own, a sense of security, and a little piece of dignity. Your time and compassion can change a child’s world.

Check out this video to see our work from start to finish (from build day to delivery day).

Volunteer: Join a Network of Scientists Supporting Science Education and Teachers

The nonprofit organization Science is Elemental (SIE) is looking for scientists eager to support elementary school teachers and spend a few hours a month (flexibly) answering teachers’ questions about their science curriculum. If desired (but not essential for volunteering), there will also be opportunities to speak (virtually or in-person) about your science or career to elementary school students. While some elementary school teachers are well-grounded in the sciences, most are not, as being so is not a requirement for a degree in elementary education, nor for being hired in most school systems. As a result, they may need science support from others to fully understand the material they are teaching.

The goal of this project is to provide the scientific background teachers want to know so that they can better serve their students. We need some scientists now, to complete our testing, and then more once the school year starts. Once the network is live, we plan to provide the answers to teachers’ questions within one hour.

Volunteers will use Slack to receive and answer questions. It is expected that each volunteer monitor Slack, when they have time, for questions being asked. In this manner, volunteers only provide their services when it is convenient for them to do so. Our goal is to have a sufficiently large network of scientist volunteers to allow coverage of the Slack channel for the entire day, and especially during and immediately after school hours.

The qualifications for this volunteer role are:

1)      At least three years working in any science (to include computer and data sciences, and engineering fields), or three years graduate study in such fields.

2)      Willingness to obtain a Science is Elemental Slack account (at no cost to you)

3)      Have some time during the day to monitor the Slack channel, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time.

4)      Desire to help elementary school teachers instill a love for the sciences in their students.

In your response to this opportunity, please indicate if you might be available, depending on scheduling, to help SIE run some tests of the system this summer.

Volunteer: Help Teach Integrated Science Workshops for Kids

Science is Elemental runs integrated science workshops. We want kids to have fun doing what they love to do such as art. music and sports, while learning some science. SIE's goal is to reach those kids that don't yet know that they like science. While we are thrilled to have high school students helping out, and welcome their participation, many of our workshops occur during the school day, when they are not available. SIE is seeking professionals with some time during the day. Retirees or near-retirees would be fantastic, particularly those with a science or engineering background. The workshops can occur anywhere in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Volunteer: Officer of the Day (OD)

Our Officers of the Day are the first to make contact with people calling for help. They work from home, using their phones. They call our voicemail system, retrieve the messages, and call people back.  (Most of our ODs protect their privacy by using *67 for these calls.) If the person requesting food assistance is in our service area, they get the information needed and pass it on to the Food Driver on duty. Financial assistace calls are passed on to the financial assistance officer (when we have the funds).  If the person is outside of our area or is requesting something we are not able to do, they refer people to other groups that might be able to help.

ODs are scheduled for the day, but they do not have to be available the whole day - they can check messages and call people back when they have the time. Messages that an OD is unable to get to are left on the voicemail system and handled by the following day's OD.

Volunteer: Applications & Scheduling Help - SHP Beds for children in need

Organization Description

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) of Montgomery Village is a nonprofit charity organization whose mission is dedicated to getting kids off the floor and into their own bed. SHP builds and delivers beds and bedding to children in need within the Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, and Germantown areas.

Purpose

Addressing the silent yet widespread issue of childhood bedlessness, we invite you to be a part of creating a meaningful impact to our community families. These beds are destined for children sleeping on floors, couches, air mattresses, and other unwanted sleeping conditions and we ensure that each child receives a complete bed set, including a bed, mattress, pillow, sheets, and a blanket. Upon delivery, each child gains more than just a bed – they now have a secure and comfortable space to call their own.

Volunteer Opportunity: Family Scheduling Support

Are you organized, tech-savvy, and looking for a flexible way to make a difference? We’re seeking a dedicated volunteer to help us manage family scheduling for bed deliveries.

What You’ll Do:

Connect with families remotely through calls, texts, and emails.Vet applicants to ensure they meet eligibility requirements.Provide families with delivery instructions, and acquire additional information needed for delivery. Coordinate and finalize delivery schedules to ensure families receive the beds they need. Work independently on your own schedule, while meeting weekly deadlines for delivery.

Details:

Time Commitment: ~ Approx. 2 hours per week.

Location: Remote (work from anywhere)

Skills: Comfortable navigating multiple browser windows simultaneously, reliable, detail-oriented, friendly.

Schedule: Flexible—complete tasks on your time, as long as deadlines are met

Why It Matters:

Every hour you give helps ensure children in need have a safe, comfortable bed of their own. Your organizational skills directly impact how quickly families move from the waiting list to having a bed in their home. If you’re looking for a meaningful, short weekly commitment that truly changes lives, this is the role for you!
