You’re finished with school, your career is underway, you are established in the neighborhood, and the kids are gone all day. In addition to our visits to schools, we are also asking for the student’s assistance to continue the education of addiction and prevention through SSL hours.

What students will do:

Student will first need to complete the volunteer form/parent/guardian permission slip and submit via to e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org. Please note that MCPS has not vetted the YouTube videos created by our organization and parents/guardians are responsible for previewing the videos and then providing parent permission for their students to view the videos.

Once approved, students will watch two video presentations provided by our organization.

One video is our speakers who are people in recovery who share their personal experience The second video is the presentation on the cycle of addiction which has information on how addiction happens.

Students can obtain SSL hours in two ways:

Write a 2-page paper based on their understanding of drug and alcohol prevention on the information received from the two videos. Papers will only be reviewed by our organization. Create an art project, including a paragraph explaining their artwork, based upon their understanding of prevention on the information they received from the videos. Art projects might be shared on our social media platforms so please review the privacy information below when submitting your project.

How to earn community service hours (SSL):

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

When your paper or art project is complete, e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org your 2-page paper or an electronic copy of your art project and paragraph to collect your signed SSL sheet for this project. Students will need to cc their parents as well on the email submission. Please allow 3-5 business days to receive your signed SSL form.

Privacy:

Please, do not share any pictures or likeness of the students as well as personal information such as home address, email or phone number etc. in your paper or artwork. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. We ask that students include their first name, grade and school only on each submission.

If you're dropping off meals, please label the containers with the ingredients so our clients with dietary restrictions can be aware. When you arrive, you can either call our front staff at 301-933-2477 or come to the front door with your food.

If you would like a copy of the meal guidelines, or have any questions or concerns please reach out to the Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator, Henrietta Morrison, at hmorrison@iworksmc.org.

Thank you for your support!

Volunteer: Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory.

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to schedule a service day for a volunteer group, please reach out to the Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator, Alice Salomon, asalomon@iworksmc.org or you can email the IW Essential Needs Center at iwclothingcenter@iworksmc.org.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.

We are looking for volunteers to help us make cookies and other baked treats to share with food insecure families in our community that we serve.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These baked treats are a nice way to provide a fun snack to go along with the other foods that we are providing for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making baked goods until schools return to normal status.  20 cookies (2.5"-3" in diameter) or 20 regular size cupcakes or 1 baked dessert loaf (use an 8.5" X 4.5" X 2.5" pan) = 1 hour of service  (Please note that mini cookies, cupcakes, or breads will not count and that we are no longer looking for regular bread as we are now getting donations of sandwich & loaf bread from a local bakery.)

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

NOTE: Items should be baked fresh the day before.  Please do not make cookies ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them.

-Please take photo of them being made and a group photo of the baked items once you've finished.

-Cookies and muffins should be put into Ziplock bags in batches of 4 and loaves should be wrapped tightly in either Saran Wrap or a gallon size Ziplock bag. Please label them and note if nuts are present.

-Make a log by writing down the number items made, and have your parent initial it.

-Submit all your work (photos, signed log, etc.) via the google form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSediZ90q8kB_AIIAK702rGYlGTPnq5z29zoFKiSbcggxaHDrg/viewform?usp=sf_link

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the baked items and your log of the amounts of the items.  Please submit your work via the form only once.

Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator.  They will then credit your hours.

Baked goods donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am.  To drop off please bring your baked goods in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.  Thanks!

We are also able to accept baked goods at the TPSS Coop (201 Ethan Allen Ave, Takoma Park MD 20912) on ALL Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30am, but please let us know what dates and the amounts you are going to be donating by emailing us at thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com at least 3 days in advance.  Please note that if the weather is bad (rain/snow) you must contact us the day before so that we can give you an alternative drop off location.  Please drop off your baked goods behind the TPSS Coop building on Columbia Avenue to one of our members (not inside to a TPSS Coop employee). Volunteer: Ayuda Holiday Toy Drive

At Ayuda, we aim to maximize our impact by creatively engaging the community in seasonal in-kind donation drives that directly support our clients. Whether it's backpacks and school supplies at the start of the school year, toys and winterwear during the holidays, or essential items like female hygiene products and WIC supplies for International Women’s Month and Mother’s Day, we strive to go above and beyond for those we serve.

As we approach the end of the year, we’re excited to launch our 2025 Holiday Toy Drive! We’re collecting new toys, games, and gadgets to wrap and distribute to our young clients and families across our offices in Virginia, DC, and Maryland.

The joy of a parent being able to give their child a brand-new gift during the holidays is unmatched.

In a time when inflation is high and budgets are tight, this campaign is especially meaningful for the families we support, including newly arrived immigrants. We aim to provide hundreds of toys for children of all ages across our three offices. We’ll need your help to collect, wrap, and distribute these gifts, ensuring that this holiday season is a joyful one for our clients!

In-kind donations to Ayuda are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Donors are responsible for determining the fair market value of their donated items. Ayuda does not assign a monetary value to in-kind donations. Please retain your receipt for tax purposes. Ayuda’s EIN (Employer Identification Number) is 52-1136608.

Volunteer: Freckles Foundation Animal Adoption Event- Saturday, December 13, 2025

We are seeking student volunteers to help at our monthly community adoption event, held the second Saturday of each month.

Assist with set up and break down of chairs, tables, and foundation resources. Lifting is required.

Help handle puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens during the event. A typical comfort around animals is needed.

Volunteer: Bone Builders Volunteer Leader - Kensington Library

Bone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Kensington Library in Kensington, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance.

We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health.

In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Volunteers may also serve a vital role by assisting their communities with ongoing public health needs (e.g., immunizations, screenings, health and nutrition education, surveillance and disease outbreak investigations).

Through the MRC volunteers have opportunities to participate in training, interact with other health and emergency response professionals, and provide support to the mission areas of the MRC. Examples of the mission areas include:

Surveillance and disease outbreak investigation Emergency Sheltering Disaster Risk Reduction Medical Surge Capacity Mass Dispensing and Vaccination Health Education and Promotion Safety and Health of Responders Mental Health First Aid and Crisis Counseling Family Reunification

Volunteer: SSL Opportunity - Bake Cakes for Birthday Cakes 4 Free

Who We Are

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

What Volunteers Do

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school.

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

How to Sign-Up to Bake Cakes

The Google Form is included in the monthly Newsletter so that you can sign-up with the number of cakes you would like to donate. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CAKES DONATED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE MORE VOLUNTEERS. The SSL form is provided at the time/date of cake delivery as long as the cake(s) meet donation requirements. SSL hours are awarded as follows:

2 cakes (or 48 cupcakes) = 3 total SSL hours

Volunteer: Support Stickers for Cancer Patients

Founded by a three-time cancer survivor, Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time.

6 simple hand-cut stickers may receive 1 service hour
3 complex hand-cut stickers may receive 1 service hour

Help bring cheer and motivation to cancer patients by creating custom stickers with positive messages and illustrations to be used as decorations for our cancer care kits. These stickers will serve as small but impactful tokens of encouragement, designed to uplift the spirits of those undergoing treatment.

How to Get Started

Brainstorm and create designs that incorporate positive messages, such as "You Are Strong," "Keep Fighting," and "Stay Positive," alongside uplifting illustrations like sunflowers, clouds, ocean themes, and smiling faces.  Please NO "get well soon", "keep growing", "shine", or other messages that may unintentionally cause discomfort. As with our other service projects, you are welcome to work from the comfort of your home, with your colleagues at the office, or with your friends at school! Use digital and/or traditional art techniques to draw and create the designs. If digital, the stickers should be printed on high-quality adhesive paper or using the tutorials below. For those seeking service hours, designs may only be repeated for hand-drawn stickers, not digital designs. Simple vs. complex: We defer to YOUR judgment, as it depends on how long it takes for you to design and cut out a sticker. If it takes about 20 minutes per sticker, due to thoughtful hand-drawn designs, coloring, text, shape, etc., then we would consider it complex. If it only takes about 10 minutes per sticker, with a smiley and text, for example, then that would be considered simple. Limits: We really hope for volunteers to focus less on quantity and more on quality, so while there is no limit, we do highly encourage quality to show patients we care with thoughtful artwork and text. Using pre-cut sticker labels: Creative designs and messages on pre-cut sticker labels may be eligible for 1 service hour per 10 designs. Using wax paper: We are no longer accepting stickers made on wax/parchment paper. Please consider using inexpensive sticker paper options below, such as these sticker sheets that can be cut into any shape and peeled more easily. Once completed, follow the submission steps here. They will then be distributed to cancer patients in hospitals, treatment centers, and support groups through Kits to Heart's cancer care kits.

Recommended Materials

Supplies will differ depending on the method of sticker-making. Please also refer to tutorials below.

Kits to Heart earns from qualifying Amazon purchases, which supports our mission at no extra cost to you.

For paper designs: Markers, colored pencils (please do not use only regular pencils for text), and any other art supplies you may have on hand, including a pair of scissors For digital designs: Ibis Paint (free app) Wacom Intuos Small Graphics Drawing Tablet Canon Printer Cricut Maker Bundle Sticker Paper Options: Sticker Paper, 100 Sheets, White Matte, 8.5 x 11 Silhouette Printable White Sticker Paper, 8.5"X11", 8 Count Pre-Cut Sticker Labels 30 Sheets, Printable White Sticker Paper, Laser/Inkjet Printing - Matte, Letter Size (8.5" x 11") Premium Printable Vinyl Sticker Paper for Your Inkjet and Laser Printer

For Students: If you are a student seeking SSL hours, you must make at least 6 simple stickers OR 3 complex stickers for quality completion of the service project. Safety First

Safety is paramount. Please follow these precautions:
• Do not prepare and drop off items if anyone in your home is sick.
• While packaging and dropping off items, wash your hands and avoid touching your face.
• During drop-off, please leave items at the front door.

Volunteer: Transport & Loading/Unloading Volunteer

Are you looking for a hands-on way to give back but with limited availability? Join us as a Transport & Loading/Unloading Volunteer and help move essential materials that support our mission!

About Us: Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP):

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization committed to building and delivering beds to children in need — because every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Our local Montgomery chapter works year-round with volunteers and community partners to bring comfort and dignity to children across our area. We help children who’s been sleeping on the floor, on couches, or sharing overcrowded sleeping spaces.

But before we can build the beds — we need the wood.

The Opportunity – Transport Volunteer:

We’re looking for a dependable volunteer with a truck or van to assist once a month by transporting lumber from our lumber partner in Silver Spring to our storage/worksite in Frederick.

This role is crucial to keeping our builds running on schedule — because no wood means no beds.

What You'll Do:

Pick up a pre-set load of lumber from a supplier in Silver Spring, assist the team with loading.Transport and unload the lumber at our Frederick Build Warehouse.Preferred time: Friday afternoons (once per month) ⏱Time commitment: approx. 3–4 hours/month

You’re a Great Fit If You:

Have a reliable truck or van with space for transporting lumber Can lift and move lumber (with help if needed) Are dependable and have a flexible Friday afternoon schedule Believe in giving back and helping kids in your community

Why It Matters:

Every load of lumber you transport becomes the frame of a bunk bed… Every bunk bed becomes a safe, warm place for a child to rest… And every child deserves that kind of peace. Your one afternoon of service each month makes a direct, hands-on impact — helping us turn raw materials into restored hope for families in need.
