So What Else is looking for committed, responsible, and motivated high schoolers (rising 9th - rising 12th graders) to serve as Co-Instructors to help develop and implement curriculum for the Student Leadership Institute (SLI) for middle schoolers. SLI will be led by an MCPS certified teacher and up to 5 HSCs will be present for each 3-day session.

HSCs should have experience in the following areas so they can effectively assist middle school campers with:

Those selected will serve as HSCs for the sessions listed below:

Session 3 and Session 4: Tuesday 8/4 - Thursday 8/6

For the dates above, HSC hours will be one of the following:

1/2 day AM 8:30-12:30

1/2 day PM 12:45-4:45

Full day 8:30-4:45 (30 min lunch break)

*Can earn up to 54 SSL hours if selected for all SLI sessions

In addition to being available for their entire SLI session(s), HSCs must be available to develop curriculum with the SLI Program Manager prior to the program. Only ONE absence will be permitted for the following curriculum planning meetings:

The Youth Leadership and Development Program offers teens the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of Youth Development. Program participants will learn and build on existing skills, including understanding how to support and guide younger children, developing patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence, and creating a safe, inclusive environment for the members we serve during Camp Adventure. Participants will also gain career readiness skills such as time management and professionalism, accountability, and communication.

Qualifications/Requirements:

· Going into the 9th – 12th Grade for the 2026 - 2027 school year and between the ages of 14 and 18 years old

· Must have strong leadership skills

· Ability to demonstrate teamwork with other Junior Leaders and adult staff members

· Ability to communicate and work with ages 6yo - 13yo

· Ability to teach and lead arts, character building, education, health & wellness, leadership, recreational, and sports activities

· Ability to make smart decisions and have safe judgment

· Is willing to run, jump, play, and do a lot of physical movements

· Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, fun, have a sense of humor, patient, and willing to learn

Highly Recommended:

· Have completed a child development course

· Have experience in working with children in a large group setting

Hope Connections for Cancer Support needs volunteers for various upcoming events to help set up the day before the event and help clean up after the event. Duties include lifting, carrying, moving 6-foot tables, folding chairs, and boxes of supplies, going up and down stairs, and standing and walking for short periods of time.  The average shift is from 1-2 hours, depending on the event, and can take place both indoors and outdoors. 

Events start soon, so please let us know if you’re interested and what timeframe you’d be available. EX: Monday-Friday, 10 am-2 pm, 3 pm-5 pm, or 6:00 pm-9 pm, and Saturday’s all day. Small Things Matter's helps those in need by providing them with food, literacy, and general support.

We are looking for volunteers to help us put together personal hygiene kits to share with the those in need in our community. 

Personal hygiene is important in feeling good about oneself and we hope these kits will help those that receive them feel cared for.

We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

We will award 1 hour of community service for each kit donated which can be used towards:

1 personal hygiene kit with a cheery note = 1 community service hour.

All items can be purchased inexpensively from the Dollar Store/Dollar Tree.  You can also reach out to your local dentist to see if they would be able to donate toothbrushes to you.

Each kit must contain these 4 items: (PLEASE NOTE ALL ITEMS SHOULD BE FULL-SIZED, NOT TRAVEL SIZE--YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR TRAVEL SIZED ITEMS:

1. 2 regular size toothbrush (must be in original sealed wrapping)

2. full size toothpaste

3. full size bar of soap/full size bottle of body wash

4. full size shampoo

-Please document your work by taking an action shot photo of them being assembled and a group shot of the finished package once you've finished

The Link Generations Teen Advisory Board Leadership Conference is Monday, June 22, 9am – 12 noon. The theme of this second annual event is Milestones Across Generations.

The purpose of the conference is to give teens the opportunity to learn about leadership skills and how to facilitate intergenerational programs. The second part of the conference will invite older adults to join the teens for intergenerational conversations, to connect with youth, and to share their expertise and words of wisdom.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. Join our online KindSoup For Students!

Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Vegetable Soup with Pesto led by an experienced student KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, May 17th from 5pm-6pm.

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours.

There are several really awesome YouTube sites that provide amazing videos answering science questions and talking about the wonders of the world around us. Science is Elemental, in its work to bring science to students who might not go seek it out also wants to support their teachers, seeks to join them. We are embarking on an effort to provide fun cool videos, geared toward elementary school teachers and their students, about the science that is part of our every day world, and in our daily environments. 

If you can bring a joy for learning, a sense of humor to add a joke or two, and a willingness to write your own and critique other storyboards as we prep to make videos, this is an opportunity for you. Requirements are an interest in science, and plain English, high-clarity writing. Video experience a plus but not required. 

While this is a virtual opportunity, there may be times when you can join in the actual video filming, although it is not a requirement that you do so. Even if you wish to be present to see your storyboard come to life, there is absolutely no requirement to be on camera.

TLC's exciting summer small therapeutic group programs are in search of fun, creative, and energetic volunteers. You will help our participants have a summer of fun in a variety of ways. There are exciting weekly themes, arts and crafts, yoga, music and drama and outdoor water activities on any given week. What is Carousel Day?

This is a festival in celebration of Glen Echo Park's 105-year-old Dentzel Carousel as it opens for the season! In addition to riding the carousel, families are welcome to enjoy many other FREE activities throughout the Park including performances, a spring parade and maypole celebration, hands-on arts & crafts, short film screenings, open artist studios & galleries, and lots more! This year’s Carousel Day performances will focus on music and dance from the African diaspora, in recognition of its influences over more than a century on American music and dance styles such as tap and hip hop. Live performances include: Sole Defined, National Hand Dance Association, The Eric Byrd Trio, Elements Dance Company...and more!

How can you help?

The early shift tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents and craft tables with supplies and tables and chairs, and then helping with the flow of the event. The late shift tasks will start with helping with the flow of the event and then breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away. Please specify if you prefer to volunteer 9am-1pm or 1-5pm or 9am-5pm.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 100+concerts by the end of 2025, involving 1.5k+ cumulative attendees and more than 500 unique student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 20 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

Searching for a skilled facilitator to design and lead a thoughtful, inclusive strategic planning process that gathers diverse stakeholder perspectives and helps the organization articulate clear, actionable strategic priorities and recommended next steps. Specific session design, timeline, and materials will be discussed with volunteers.

This project will help refine priorities that strengthen intergenerational programs in school readiness, workforce development, and community empowerment. Volunteers will help chart a path that reduces isolation and expands meaningful connections between children, older adults, and families.

Details will be provided during volunteer interviews. We will collaborate closely with the facilitator, share organizational context and program information, and coordinate stakeholder participation so the resulting priorities can be adopted and advanced in our next phase of growth. We have a previous strategic plan with which we are using for a jumping off point. Volunteers will work closely with the Board President and Executive Director.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC. 

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training:

As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization!

Anyone can become a volunteer! There is no minimum age requirement. This is a great way to start earning SSL hours in middle school. 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas.  We have various types of volunteer opportunities available but are specifically looking for volunteers who can help answer questions about technology.

Volunteer service providers must be over 18. Some services take place in the home, like connecting a new computer or troubleshooting a cable connection. Other questions might be able to be answered over the phone.  We are looking for volunteers with an interest in basic troubleshooting for home computers, printers, networking, and smartphones.  Complicated or time consuming questions are referred to paid providers.

Candidates must be personable and patient and feel that they have a good rapport with seniors.

Volunteers fill out an application and go through a background check and a short training.  You choose which service requests you would like to accept - there is no requirement to take any minimum number of requests and you do what is convenient for you. Bethesda Metro Area Village is seeking volunteers to become occasional service providers for our members - senior citizens in the downtown Bethesda and surrounding areas. You volunteer on your schedule!

Volunteers can choose to help as a driver (driving seniors to or from doctor's appointments, etc), a notetaker during medical appointments, absent owner services (such as watering plants or picking up packages) or to do light home repair tasks (such as lifting boxes, changing tall lightbulbs, etc), or provide limited technical assistance for computers and other devices. 

Our most-requested service is rides to doctor appointments during weekdays.These rides are crucial for our members and provide a way to get to know the member during conversation on the ride.

Volunteer service providers can be any age (over 18), and do not have to be seniors themselves. Although many volunteers are also members.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22.

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say, "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

The People's Community Baptist church offers various opportunities to earn SSL hours.  We serve as a food distribution site on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to sort, bag, and hand out the food via a drive-through process.

On the 4th Saturdays (7:30am-9:30am), we serve as a host site for the SHARE (Self Help and Resource Program) food distribution program where volunteers are needed to help package bulk food for distribution.

Quarterly, (on Saturdays), we collect, sort, and distribute gently used clothes to the community.

On the first and third Wednesdays, we host a program/lunch for seniors and retirees (11am to 1pm).  Volunteers can assist in the room set set-up and break down of tables and chairs; and assist with serving lunch and clean up, and/or where needed.

We need volunteers to assist teachers with our weekly Sunday School classes (9am-10am), and with the set of technology equipment, etec.  We use volunteers to assist our media team

We also offer special events and programs that requires volunteers who need opportunities to earn SSL hours. Some of those events include our Annual Easter Egg Hunt; Annual Church Picnic; Annual Hallelujah Party; Annual Vacation Bible School. Students can assist in making decorations, decorating classrooms and hallways; assistance with indoor and out door games; playground

Camp Counselors are required to volunteer for at least one week-long camp totaling 40 hours per session (20 hours for half-day preschool camps). Camps run Monday through Friday. All applicants must attend a Camp Counselor Training on Saturday, June 13 from 10am to 2pm at Locust Grove Nature Center. Camp Counselors must be comfortable working outside for the majority of their shift in variable conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and mud. Camp activities make use of our various outdoor areas including the nature play space, the creek, campfire rings, outdoor classrooms, and our natural surface trails. All volunteers are expected to show up for their shift on time, be fully engaged with their group, report incidents or safety concerns to staff immediately, and proactively work to create a positive camp atmosphere for all. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and submit to a background check.

The UpCounty Hub provides fresh produce, shelf stable foods, hygiene items, and some social services for the families that we serve in our community. 

Drivers are needed on Thursdays to deliver food packages to the doorstep of vulnerable Upcounty families, that are not able to drive to one of our weekly distribution sites. Drivers should be able to lift up to 25 lbs.  Addresses of clients will be provided upon arrival at the Hub on delivery day. You will be delivering food directly to clients. 

Please arrive at the UpCounty Hub between 10:45am-11:00am on Thursday and pull around to the right side of the building to the loading dock. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN HANDICAP SPOTS!  If possible please try to register for this shift by the Tuesday before so we can assign boxes to the correct number of cars.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to children with special needs and is looking for middle and high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the soccer field.  The program is run by a trained coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock View Elementary in Kensington runs from 3:30 - 4:30pm every Tuesday afternoon for a 7 week period beginning on April 7.  We'll finish the season on May 19th.  We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire 7 week session.

This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to dig in, plant, and learn. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll install native plants like black-eyed susans, purple coneflowers, and butterfly weed, creating a lasting outdoor classroom and gathering space for all.

30 encouragement cards = 1 SSL hour

• Students may earn up to 3 SSL hours per day during the school year

• Students may earn up to 6 SSL hours per day during holidays and school breaks

Grace Helping Hands is seeking compassionate volunteers to help collect hygiene products for homeless women and children in our community. Many go without the basic necessities that promote dignity, cleanliness, and health. You can make a real difference by organizing a donation drive or simply collecting items on your own.

We are looking for individuals, families, church groups, and community organizations to collect new, unopened hygiene products and deliver them to one of our drop-off locations. All products should be travel size.

Description:

Grace Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing toiletry kits and feminine hygiene products to homeless women and children in Montgomery County and beyond. We are offering an impactful volunteer opportunity for MCPS students to earn SSL hours while advocating for those in need.

Volunteers will participate in a writing campaign to raise awareness and request support from local legislators, businesses, and manufacturers. Students will draft emails to local congresspersons, stores, vendors, and manufacturers, urging them to support Grace Helping Hands by donating products or funding.

Volunteers will design digital encouragement cards to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These digital cards will be shared with hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help spread positivity and reduce feelings of isolation. Each completed card counts as .5 SSL hours. Due to the overwhelming number of submissions, each person may only make up to 10 cards per month. 

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22. SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

Instructions: Create a digital card that includes a colorful illustration/design and a short encouraging message. Good themes include nature scenes, animals, flowers, characters, positive quotes, etc. Some examples of a short positive message are a positive thought, a message about kindness, something that might make someone smile, etc. Do not include references to illness or hospitals, phrases like get well soon, politics or religion, and personal contact information. Cards can be created through Canva, Photoshop, or any digital drawing software. They should be colorful, appropriate and high resolution. AI-generated artwork, copied images, and low-quality designs will not receive SSL hours. 

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself.

Duties:

·         Game day on-field supervisor of teams, players, buddies, adult volunteers, parents

·         Keep kids safe while they are playing; encourage team spirit and player satisfaction  

·         Help keep the playing field activities moving

·         Help players learn some basic baseball skills (running bases, throwing, catching, fielding, batting, team bonding)

·         Attend all Spring & Fall Season games

We need 2 coaches for Saturday and 2 coaches on Sunday. 

Qualifications:

·         Ability to work with special needs children 

·         Strong knowledge of baseball 

·         Good communications skills

·         Some coaching experience preferred

·         At least college age preferred

About the Role: We are seeking volunteer drivers to help transport seniors. GO Rides is a 15-year organization, founded with the goal of empowering more seniors to age in place. Through this position, you can be the difference in a senior’s life!

Bethesda Help Needs Drivers

Our Drivers deliver a supply of food to clients within our service area.  The time commitment is 2 days a month, with actual delivery time usually taking only 2-3 hours. Drivers pick up pre-packaged food bags from our pantry on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda and make all deliveries curbside.

Drivers must have a cellphone, a vehicle, be a licensed driver, carry vehicle insurance, have access to a computer, and be computer literate. Training is provided.

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours.

The Children-Based volunteer provides students with a hands-on opportunity to support children in a fun, structured ABA environment. Interns assist with group activities, social skills programming, and community-based learning while working closely with experienced BCBAs and RBTs. This volunteer position is ideal for students seeking to complete practicum hours while gaining real-world experience in behavioral health.

Volunteer for the 2026 Montgomery County Youth Media Festival on May 16th from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

The Youth Media Festival is a celebration of youth-created media, where young people showcase their work in activism, storytelling, and digital creativity. Your help will make a huge impact in ensuring the success of this event! This opportunity will count toward SSL hour requirements.

We’re looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks, from event setup and registration to helping facilitate the activities during the festival. Your support helps give youth a voice.

We’d love to have you on board and make this festival a memorable experience for all!
