Want to help the National Foundation for Cancer Research while having fun scooping ice cream, passing out information, and collecting tips?

Volunteer with us on Tuesday, April 14th during Free Cone Day at the Ben and Jerry's at the Wharf along the Southwest Waterfront and help us raise money for cancer research.

We will be volunteering as guest scoopers and handing out free ice cream between 12pm-8pm on Tuesday, April 14th, and are seeking volunteers for 2-3 hour shifts.

Location is metro accessible via Waterfront on the Green line and L'Enfant Plaza on Blue, Orange, Silver, Green and Yellow lines.

Join us in honoring Earth Day with a community cleanup and gardening in Prathertown! Together, we’ll make a hands-on difference by keeping our local environment healthy and beautiful on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (weather permitting). 

Spend a Saturday outdoors enjoying the fresh air, connecting with neighbors, and helping care for our planet. Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road. In the morning we will be having a community cleanup, followed by sustainable gardening. We will work together to count and take photos of every bag of trash collected for a report to the Department of Transportation. You’re also welcome to bring a canned food item for our Earth Day food drive supporting local families.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter. 

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources. 

By registering, you acknowledge that volunteering may involve physical activity, handling sharp or heavy objects, and contact with unfamiliar persons or animals. Please exercise reasonable care and understand you assume any personal risk of injury or property damage.

During the summer, volunteers serve as camp counselors, supporting campers with their daily routines, schedules, and Taekwondo activities. They play an important role in ensuring the safety of our campers while creating an environment where they can learn, make new friends, and have fun. Volunteers set a high standard, acting as supportive and caring examples of good role models within the day camp setting.

Come help out for our Annual Egg Hunt! This is a family-friendly, outdoor event. Families will come to enjoy live entertainment including a DJ, face painters, and balloon twisters, in addition to popcorn, touch-a-truck, photos with Mr. Bunny! 

Volunteers will help with set-up and break-down of the event as well as basic field monitoring and facilitating crafts/games. 

Arrival time is 8:30am with an anticipated end time of 1:30pm. Volunteers will meet at the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912), in the Azalea Room for check-in. Volunteer vests, badges, refreshments, and periodic breaks will be provided.

PLEASE NOTE: All volunteers must complete the Volunteer Assignment Form in order to confirm their attendance, time slot of availability, and indicate their preferred station.

We are looking for outgoing and friendly people, and while all jobs are not physically demanding, they all do require the ability to work on uneven ground and lots of walking.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

ArtUnity Youth hosts an ongoing, supervised in-person service program where students create encouragement cards for hospital patients. Each month features a different positive theme to guide artwork/card, art works and messages: March: You Are Not Alone, April: Hope and Strength, May: One Day at a Time, June: Bright Days Ahead, July: Courage in Every Step, August: Keep Going, Volunteers design hospital-appropriate cards, write supportive messages, and help package donations for healthcare partners. All art supplies are provided. Sessions are held on the first floor at Rockville Memorial Library on Fridays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Please look for a BIG Teddy Bear wearing an ArtUnity Youth T-shirt. Students may attend for 1–2 hours within this time window. Registration is required. Students earn 1 SSL hour per 60 minutes of verified participation (maximum 2 hours per session), based on supervisor attendance. All artwork must meet program guidelines and is reviewed and approved on-site by the ArtUnity Youth program manager before SSL hours are verified.

Become a historian for the day! Help museum staff transcribe historical documents and make information searchable and accessible for researchers. This opportunity is appropriate for ages 13 and up.

Sessions are offered over Zoom at the following times. Volunteers may register for one or both sessions. Museum staff will attend and answer questions. 

This Transcribe-a-Thon event will focus on documents containing information about Black community members in Sandy Spring.

Help us with our annual festival Carousel Day on May 2nd 2026!

What is Carousel Day?

This is a festival in celebration of Glen Echo Park's 105-year-old Dentzel Carousel as it opens for the season! In addition to riding the carousel, families are welcome to enjoy many other FREE activities throughout the Park including performances, a spring parade and maypole celebration, hands-on arts & crafts, short film screenings, open artist studios & galleries, and lots more! This year’s Carousel Day performances will focus on music and dance from the African diaspora, in recognition of its influences over more than a century on American music and dance styles such as tap and hip hop. Live performances include: Sole Defined, National Hand Dance Association, The Eric Byrd Trio, Elements Dance Company...and more!

How can you help?

The early shift tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents and craft tables with supplies and tables and chairs, and then helping with the flow of the event. The late shift tasks will start with helping with the flow of the event and then breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away. Please specify if you prefer to volunteer 9am-1pm or 1-5pm or 9am-5pm.

Science is Elemental has a booth at the Rockville Science Day, Sunday April 26th, from noon to 5 pm. I could use teenage or older volunteers to help me at the booth. We will be demonstrating the Science of Swimming workshop (no swimsuits or swimming pool required!). Shifts can be as short as 1 hour at a time.

Perfect opportunity for high school students to earn SSL hours!

Safety Town is an interactive learning opportunity for children ages 2 - 7.  It features a ground tarp marked with road, crosswalks, arrows, railroad tracks, etc.  We add traffic signs and signals, as well as miniature buildings, to complete the town.  Children ride bikes, trikes and scooters through as a play led learning activity.  Assistants help them navigate properly; following the signs and signals accordingly.  

Stations you may work include:

- helmet station - assisting with getting participants set up with the proper helmet and choosing an appropriate vehicle (bike/trike/scooter), introducing concepts, collecting equipment when participants come off tarp and preparing it for next user in the town

- tarp of Safety Town -  very interactive with the children; prompting them about the signs and signals see, educating them on what they mean, making sure they are following the rules, directing them off tarp when done, etc.

- resource table - letting children and caregivers know about the resources we have for them to take home, making sure table stays stocked, etc.

Safety Town is all about creating a fun and engaging experience for the participants.  The goal is for them to walk away with a better awareness and understanding of traffic rules and safe pedestrian and bicycle behaviors to help keep them safe in and around their communities.  You will be sent some materials to read ahead of time reviewing some of the key concepts of basic traffic safety that we are promoting.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend. 

Meet at the Willard Avenue Park entrance at 5310 Willard Avenue.  We will be working on removing ivy from the trees there.  There is free parking along Willard Avenue.

MusicAid (https://www.musicaid.us/home) is a student-led organization. As proud SSL partners with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland.

We are a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization. MusicAid is one of the certifying organizations participating in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

Founded in July 2023, MusicAid has organized and contributed to 100+concerts by the end of 2025, involving 1.5k+ cumulative attendees and more than 500 unique student musicians. These include performances at 5 senior homes, NIH Atrium, Children's National Hospital in D.C. We also provided More than 20 free piano accompaniments to musicians who couldn't afford the fee. We're looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future.

MusicAid is proud to be recognized by the Montgomery County Board of Education. The certificate states: “In recognition of your outstanding dedication to expanding musical opportunities for students and enriching our communities through education, service, and performances.” Signed by Julie Yang, President of the Board of Education on December 6, 2025, highlighting MusicAid’s impact in the community.

We are actively recruiting talented musicians from K-12 to join our mission. MusicAid hosts biweekly or monthly concerts at various assisted living facilities near Potomac and Arlington, Join MusicAid today and earn up to 4 SSL hours for contributing to our concert performances! SSL hours vary based on your performance duration and the length of the concert.

We appreciate all types of performances, including but not limited to instrument playing, singing, dancing, talk shows, comedy acts, poetry readings, and more. Whether you're a solo act, duo, trio, or group, you're invited to perform.

We offer the following equipment at the facility: a piano, a music stand, and a Bluetooth speaker. A Microphone will also be provided for singing performance.

Archaeology Day gives families a chance to get a glimpse into the world of an archaeologist!

This free, family-friendly day is filled with hands-on activities, demonstrations, games, costumed interpreters, food trucks, music, and more! Volunteers are essential for the success of this event! There are three ways to volunteer with Family Archaeology Day:

A guided, nature-based art experience focused on exploration and fun

For SSL hours, join us in the setup and facilitation for a free, lively, exploratory pop-up workshop designed to spark imagination and creative confidence. You will help to experiment, combine materials, break small rules, and follow curiosity rather than instructions. Assist them in discovering native plants and animals, rain gardens, or neighborhood green spaces, and create unique line drawings that can be used as coloring pages or shared with others. Premade coloring pages will also be available for attendees who do not want to paint.

You will be working with kids for this volunteer opportunity since this workshop will be geared towards kids ages 6-12.

For students looking to earn SSL hours, you will be supporting the workshop facilitators in setting up, leading, and post workshop cleaning.

No prior art experience is required, and all materials are provided.

Trash is the visible form of stormwater pollution, a major threat to water quality and park health and its removal makes the parklands cleaner, safer, and more beautiful for all. This event is part of the Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup - a month-long push to remove litter throughout the Rock Creek watershed! Additional information will be sent from the event leader one business day before the event. Event location, directions, and information will be sent from the event leader 48 hours prior to the event.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the work and weather. We recommend wearing sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers, including pants and long sleeves - this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like poison ivy.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC. 

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training:

As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

One Montgomery Green (OMG) is hosting a FREE Community Paper Shredding and Electronic recycling event for the community on April 11, 2026. from 10 am-1 pm at the Silver Spring Methodist Church parking lot 8900 Georgia Ave Silver Spring MD 20910.

We are looking for volunteers to staff the information booth, help direct traffic and provide general information about OMG. Volunteers are expected to arrive by 9:30a to help set ups stations.

Volunteers have be to at least 14 years old. SSL hours are available.

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22.

SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say, "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

Camp Counselors are required to volunteer for at least one week-long camp totaling 40 hours per session (20 hours for half-day preschool camps). Camps run Monday through Friday. All applicants must attend a Camp Counselor Training on Saturday, June 13 from 10am to 2pm at Locust Grove Nature Center. Camp Counselors must be comfortable working outside for the majority of their shift in variable conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and mud. Camp activities make use of our various outdoor areas including the nature play space, the creek, campfire rings, outdoor classrooms, and our natural surface trails. All volunteers are expected to show up for their shift on time, be fully engaged with their group, report incidents or safety concerns to staff immediately, and proactively work to create a positive camp atmosphere for all. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and submit to a background check.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to children with special needs and is looking for middle and high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the soccer field.  The program is run by a trained coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock View Elementary in Kensington runs from 3:30 - 4:30pm every Tuesday afternoon for a 7 week period beginning on April 7.  We'll finish the season on May 19th.  We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire 7 week session.

Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Build Day as we bring our student-designed conservation garden to life at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to dig in, plant, and learn. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll install native plants like black-eyed susans, purple coneflowers, and butterfly weed, creating a lasting outdoor classroom and gathering space for all.

Grace Helping Hands is seeking volunteers to assist with social media content creation and posting to help promote our mission of providing essential toiletry kits to homeless women and children.

Description:

Grace Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing toiletry kits and feminine hygiene products to homeless women and children in Montgomery County and beyond. We are offering an impactful volunteer opportunity for MCPS students to earn SSL hours while advocating for those in need.

Volunteers will participate in a writing campaign to raise awareness and request support from local legislators, businesses, and manufacturers. Students will draft emails to local congresspersons, stores, vendors, and manufacturers, urging them to support Grace Helping Hands by donating products or funding.

Volunteers will design digital encouragement cards to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These digital cards will be shared with hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help spread positivity and reduce feelings of isolation. Each completed card counts as .5 SSL hours. Due to the overwhelming number of submissions, each person may only make up to 10 cards per month. 

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22. SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

Instructions: Create a digital card that includes a colorful illustration/design and a short encouraging message. Good themes include nature scenes, animals, flowers, characters, positive quotes, etc. Some examples of a short positive message are a positive thought, a message about kindness, something that might make someone smile, etc. Do not include references to illness or hospitals, phrases like get well soon, politics or religion, and personal contact information. Cards can be created through Canva, Photoshop, or any digital drawing software. They should be colorful, appropriate and high resolution. AI-generated artwork, copied images, and low-quality designs will not receive SSL hours. 

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself.

Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Interns assist with group activities, social skills programming, and community-based learning while working closely with experienced BCBAs and RBTs. Trash is the visible form of stormwater pollution, a major threat to water quality and park health and its removal makes the parklands cleaner, safer, and more beautiful for all. This event is part of the Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup - a month-long push to remove litter throughout the Rock Creek watershed!

Event location, directions, and information will be sent from the event leader 48 hours prior to the event.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the work and weather. We recommend wearing sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers, including pants and long sleeves - this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like poison ivy.

We are excited to invite volunteers to be part of DMV Sprummer Fest 2026, a vibrant community event bringing families together for a day of fun, culture, food, music, and engaging activities for all ages. Volunteers play a key role in making this event successful by helping with event setup, activity coordination, guest assistance, parking management and overall event support.

This is a great opportunity with multiple shifts for students and community members to gain valuable volunteering experience while supporting a meaningful community initiative. Middle School and High School students will receive Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for their participation.

As a thank-you for your support, free parking, food and drinks will be provided to all volunteers during the event.

Become a historian for the day! Help museum staff transcribe historical documents and make information searchable and accessible for researchers. This opportunity is appropriate for ages 13 and up.

Sessions are offered over Zoom at the following times. Volunteers may register for one or both sessions. Museum staff will attend and answer questions. 

This Transcribe-a-Thon event will focus on documents containing information about Black community members in Sandy Spring.

Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Vegetable Soup with Pesto led by an experienced student KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, May 3rd from 5pm-6pm.

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours.

Starting in April Home At Last Sanctuary will be holding PuPuP Dog Adoption events around Rockville MD.  
We will be looking for experienced dog handlers, chaperones, parking attendants, trash detail picking up everything and anything left behind at the end of this event.

No minor children can be dog handlers.  This will not earn SSL credits.

Montgomery Counties' largest STEM festival, in our 35th year at Montgomery Colleges Rockville Campus. We fill 5 buildings and the sidewalks with 100 STEM exhibitors and expect 4,000 visitors.

Join our online KindSoup For Students!

Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Vegetable Soup with Pesto led by an experienced student KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, April 19th from 5pm-6pm.

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours.

The Muddy Branch Alliance is holding its annual native plant sale! We need volunteers to help 1200 native plants reach their new homes in our community. The event functions as an online pre-sale; when we receive the plants, volunteers play a key role in sorting the plants and distributing orders to customers. Help us make it happen! Volunteer activities include picking up plants from the nursery, sorting plants into customer orders, calling customers to remind them to come get their plants, and helping customers carry plants to their cars.

No special knowledge of plants is needed - we will teach you the sorting process. Join us for this fun event!

Sign up for FRIDAY, the sorting day, if you like working with plants. Sign up for SATURDAY, the pick-up day, if you like working with people.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian  and must be completed outside of school hours. The student representative will gain valuable insight and experience related to areas of nonprofit organizations, nonprofit boards and governance, leadership, and community involvement. The student representative will participate in quarterly board meetings as well as develop a project or program independently with guidance from FOLMC administration.

The student representative position is approved for Student Service Learning hours. The position is for a two-year term to begin in August and is open to students who will enter their junior year of high school in the fall of 2026.

Qualified applicants must be Montgomery County Residents and attending a high school located in Montgomery County. Interested students should apply online and must submit two letters of recommendation. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to kids and young adults with special needs and is looking for high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy learning the game of flag football.  The program is run by a head coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Chevy Chase Elementary in Chevy Chase runs from 10:30 - 11:30am every Sunday morning beginning April 12th and ending on May 31st. No practice on May 24th.

We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire season but are open to having them come for alternative schedules, as long as they clearly communicate with the coach.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian  and must be completed outside of school hours. 75-minute film screening followed by discussion. Teens 13 & up are eligible to earn SSL hours by attending, participating, and providing feedback!

Join us for an eye-opening event for teens, their families and communities. We'll screen the impactful film Can't Look Away, which explores the dangers of social media and the connection between harmful algorithms and their negative effects on young users.

After the film, engage in a discussion about the urgent need for reform, the risks associated with social media, and how to stay informed and seek help for affected youth. Students 13 and up will also participate in a writing activity that will allow them to reflect on what they can do to help curb the negative impacts of social media. This free event is a valuable opportunity to educate families on these critical issues and take proactive steps to protect our community's young members.

Please be advised that this film explores difficult subject matter that some viewers may find distressing. Viewer discretion is advised, particularly for children under the age of 13.

Travel Unity welcomes volunteers who want to support our work making travel more welcoming to people of all backgrounds and identities.

Volunteers contribute in different ways depending on their interests and skills, including research, outreach, storytelling, events, partnerships, and workforce development initiatives.

As an initial step, new volunteers complete a short project to demonstrate engagement. Volunteers can choose between two options:

Spotlight – Interview a travel industry professional and write a short profile about their work and career path.

Case Study – Research and document an organization’s work in the travel industry.

Volunteers needed for Babies Borm Healthy's 6th Annual Right From the Start, a health fair and panel designed to help area families have empowered pregnancies and births. Guests and volunteers will meet local agencies and service providers, learn from maternal health experts and hear from our county's leading public health officials.
