Volunteer: Flea Market ManagementThe Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors. The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. Volunteer: History Enthusiasts neededThe Germantown Historical Society is looking for volunteers for its Board of Directors. Anyone from Germantown who is interested in history and in community can apply. The Society is dedicated to preserving the historic structures, objects and spaces that contribute to the heritage of Germantown, conducting research on those and on the people of the past of our town, and to sharing the history of our community with the residents. We believe that knowledge of the roots of a community fosters community identity and cohesiveness. We meet one evening a month. Our current projects include archiving 1930s bank records, our campaign to create a museum of banking history in our 1922 bank building, and local historical and genealogical research. We host a large Flea Market the first Saturday of every month April-November to raise funds. The sale of spaces for vendors at the Flea Markets grosses $13,000-$24,000 a year, which we share 1/4 each to two other non-profit partners that help with the markets.
