Opportunities From: Montgomery County Volunteer Center

Want to make a difference, but don't know where to start? Look no further!

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) offers countless volunteer opportunities, and one is sure to be perfect for you. From tutoring students to distributing free groceries and from helping out with bingo night to book club, at AHC we support residents however we can. Volunteers can even serve from home, with do-it-yourself projects like assembling snack bags or welcome bags. We welcome volunteer groups to be creative; we love taking your skills and interests and turning them into events for our residents.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) organizes fun events for residents to relax and get to know each other.

On Thursday, July 30, 3:30-6pm, we're hosting a "Field Day" event for all ages at Allium Place in Silver Spring. There will be food and water games so children and adults can have fun, relax and be together.

Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, sign-in, activities, giving out snacks and clean-up. The volunteer shift is 3:30-6pm. Sign up using this link or email volunteer@ahcinc.org with questions.

Adult volunteers are preferred; students age 15+ who are able to follow instructions, work independently and be friendly are welcome. Volunteers will need to focus on residents and not use their cell phones while volunteering.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Volunteers will assist in distributing boxes of food, including fruit, vegetables and canned goods, to low-income senior citizens at AHC's Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building located in Silver Spring. Volunteers will bring food inside building to 2nd floor lobby using carts & elevators. Residents will pick up food boxes.

Volunteers should be friendly and reliable, able to work both independently and in a small group. Food boxes weigh between 20-40 pounds, so volunteers must be able to lift that amount onto tables & carts.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) organizes fun events to bring neighbors together every month. We are looking for volunteers to pass out calendars and newsletters to residents at Country Place, 3900 Blackburn Lane, Burtonsville MD once a month.

The active senior citizens living at Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC)'s Charter House apartment building like to exercise. We're looking for volunteers to lead weekly exercise or yoga classes. If you are an experienced teacher, wonderful. If you don't have teaching experience, you can host the class. You'll welcome residents and play an exercise video on the large screen.

Classes held in the early evening (sometime between 5-6:30pm) have been well-attended. We've also hosted morning classes in the past.
