Volunteers are needed to help to decorate for our Prom & Spring Dance. People diagnosed with developmental disabilities love celebrating with their family and friends and we want to make the party room special! Volunteers will be needed to transform our gymnasium into a glamorous night in Hollywood.

The dance is to celebrate the 2026 graduates of the Marcia D Smith School and to welcome transitioning youth.

Wear comfortable shoes and snacks and drinks will be provided. Let's make some Hollywood Magic!

1. We welcome all students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as amateur college students.
2. All music levels and genres are welcome.

ArtUnity Youth hosts an ongoing, supervised in-person service program where students create encouragement cards for hospital patients. Each month features a different positive theme to guide artwork/card, art works and messages: March: You Are Not Alone, April: Hope and Strength, May: One Day at a Time, June: Bright Days Ahead, July: Courage in Every Step, August: Keep Going, Volunteers design hospital-appropriate cards, write supportive messages, and help package donations for healthcare partners. All art supplies are provided. Sessions are held on the first floor at Rockville Memorial Library on the Last Friday of each month from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Please look for a BIG Teddy Bear wearing an ArtUnity Youth T-shirt. Students may attend for 1–2 hours within this time window. Registration is required. Students earn 1 SSL hour per 60 minutes of verified participation (maximum 2 hours per session), based on supervisor attendance. All artwork must meet program guidelines and is reviewed and approved on-site by the ArtUnity Youth program manager before SSL hours are verified.

Celebrate the mothers at Charter House, an affordable housing apartment building in downtown Silver Spring, at a party on Thursday, May 28. 

Volunteers will help with set-up and decorations, serve food during the party and help with clean-up. The volunteer time slot is 4:15-7:15pm

Volunteers should be age 14+, able to follow instructions and interact with residents.

Westbrook ES Forest Conservation Area

Meet at the school parking lot, down the driveway. We will be working to the left of the driveway, on the Forest Conservation area land.  Please park on the street.

Join weed warriors and remove invasive vines and non-native plants. Bring gloves or clippers or use ours. Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes and bring water to drink.

Pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Students under 14 years must be accompanied by responsible adult.

Weather policy: We usually hold pulls as long as there is not pouring rain or high winds. We will post on our website by 9:00 that morning if we need to cancel.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend. 

Meet at the Willard Avenue Park entrance at 5310 Willard Avenue.  We will be working on removing ivy from the trees there.  There is free parking along Willard Avenue on the Park side.  DO NOT PARK on the south side.

May Intergenerational Book Club

This program brings together staff and volunteers (age 50+) from the Jewish Council for the Aging Heyman Interages® Center, MCPL staff and MCPS students. The Intergenerational Book Club has several goals, some of which follow:

●      to connect all participants to meaningful reading materials;

●      to create meaningful, stimulating conversations; and

●      to provide opportunities for youth and older adults to connect with a diverse group so

 that each participant can learn from each other.

Looking for ways to shape the next generation of students and make a difference in your community? The City of Rockville's Latino Youth Development Program (LYDP) hosts a free after school program at Elwood Smith Community Center and is looking for tutors, retired educators, or passionate professionals to volunteer for 1-2 hours per week.

Volunteers will work in small groups or perform one-on-one tutoring with middle and/or high school students. You will support them with homework on subjects such as math, science, reading, and others. This is a great way to build relationships with the students while also helping them excel in school.

Volunteers with educator or tutor experience are preferred. Volunteers fluent in Spanish are preferred, but not required, to help a few students who primarily speak Spanish.

The volunteer shifts are 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays with middle school students, and 3-4 p.m. on Wednesdays with high school students. Volunteer availability can be discussed.

This will be a meaningful, rewarding experience that will help our students excel in school, and in turn support them in working toward graduation and beyond!

Bike MS: Chesapeake Challenge is a 2-Day cycling event that raises money for a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. Help us with our annual festival Carousel Day on May 2nd 2026!

What is Carousel Day?

This is a festival in celebration of Glen Echo Park's 105-year-old Dentzel Carousel as it opens for the season! In addition to riding the carousel, families are welcome to enjoy many other FREE activities throughout the Park including performances, a spring parade and maypole celebration, hands-on arts & crafts, short film screenings, open artist studios & galleries, and lots more! This year’s Carousel Day performances will focus on music and dance from the African diaspora, in recognition of its influences over more than a century on American music and dance styles such as tap and hip hop. Live performances include: Sole Defined, National Hand Dance Association, The Eric Byrd Trio, Elements Dance Company...and more!

How can you help?

The early shift tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents and craft tables with supplies and tables and chairs, and then helping with the flow of the event. The late shift tasks will start with helping with the flow of the event and then breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away. Please specify if you prefer to volunteer 9am-1pm or 1-5pm or 9am-5pm.

4 well-decorated store-bought journals may receive 1 service hour

Decorate beautiful journals that recipients can use as appointment planners, symptom trackers, or simply coloring books. The covers and a few pages inside could be spaces for volunteers to draw outlines or artwork, write inspiring messages, etc.

For those seeking service hours: As of August 11, 2023, we ONLY accept store-bought journals that you decorate yourself for service hours, but not composition notebooks. The outside covers should be decorated with hand-drawn art and/or handwritten inspiring quotes. Using only stickers or decorative tape is not acceptable for service hours. At least one of the inside pages should also be decorated with calendars, activity or coloring pages, handwritten inspiring messages, etc.

Undecorated store-bought journals are always welcome but are not eligible for service hours. Handmade journals may be accepted only if pre-approved and exceptionally well-made.

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

Artwork Guidelines:

Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Letter Guidelines: Write a letter (6-10 sentences) about: something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc. The letter must fill up the inside of the card. Please do not mention illness, politics, hospitals or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life. Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as: Hi there! Hello! Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if they: Are not fully colored, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates), etc. Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before Friday, May 22 will be reviewed and sent out on Friday, May 22.

SSL hours for submissions received on or after May 22 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027.

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say, "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

The People's Community Baptist church offers various opportunities to earn SSL hours.  We serve as a food distribution site on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to sort, bag, and hand out the food via a drive-through process.

On the 4th Saturdays (7:30am-9:30am), we serve as a host site for the SHARE (Self Help and Resource Program) food distribution program where volunteers are needed to help package bulk food for distribution.

Quarterly, (on Saturdays), we collect, sort, and distribute gently used clothes to the community.

On the first and third Wednesdays, we host a program/lunch for seniors and retirees (11am to 1pm).  Volunteers can assist in the room set set-up and break down of tables and chairs; and assist with serving lunch and clean up, and/or where needed.

We need volunteers to assist teachers with our weekly Sunday School classes (9am-10am), and with the set of technology equipment, etec.  We use volunteers to assist our media team

We also offer special events and programs that requires volunteers who need opportunities to earn SSL hours. Some of those events include our Annual Easter Egg Hunt; Annual Church Picnic; Annual Hallelujah Party; Annual Vacation Bible School. Students can assist in making decorations, decorating classrooms and hallways; assistance with indoor and out door games; playground

Grace Helping Hands is seeking compassionate volunteers to help collect hygiene products for homeless women and children in our community. Many go without the basic necessities that promote dignity, cleanliness, and health. You can make a real difference by organizing a donation drive or simply collecting items on your own.

We are looking for individuals, families, church groups, and community organizations to collect new, unopened hygiene products and deliver them to one of our drop-off locations. All products should be travel size.

We will be looking for experienced dog handlers, chaperones, parking attendants, trash detail picking up everything and anything left behind at the end of this event.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) organizes fun events for residents to relax and get to know each other.

On Thursday, March 19, 6-7pm, we're hosting a ceramics painting event for all ages at Allium Place in Silver Spring.

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

We require that volunteers be at least 14 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent signature to start their hours.  A parent’s signature can be provided on our online form or in person.

Help keep Rockville streams free of trash and participate in the Annual Potomac River Stream Cleanup at Maryvale Park with the Rockville Environment Commission. Space is limited and online registration for each volunteer is required. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toed shoes. SSL hours available.

Program Description

The Financial Empowerment Program (FEP) provides low-income individuals and families with the opportunity to work one-on-one or in group settings with trained volunteers, either as Financial Empowerment Educators or Financial Coaches.

Both roles focus on empowering clients to make informed financial decisions and progress toward self-identified goals.

Responsibilities:The primary role of both Educators and Coaches is to provide structure, guidance, encouragement, and access to resources, not to make decisions for clients or provide investment advice.

We're so excited to reconnect with many senior centers open for in-person performance now.  YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform in senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia, etc. If you are interested in sharing your music with seniors, this will be a super exciting experience for you to bring the music and joy to them and also build up your own performance skill.  1-3hr SSL will be issued for each performance at this special period.  Performers will also have chance to get YAMS customized sticker, pin, and t-shirt.

Role Overview:

The PATESI Foundation is seeking male volunteers to serve as educators and allies.  No previous experience needed. We are inviting men who believe in dignity, equity, and community support to join our Male Ally-ship Program as volunteer educators. This is an initiative designed to equip boys and men with the knowledge and confidence to support menstrual health, reduce stigma, and stand alongside peers experiencing period poverty. Menstrual health isn’t “a women’s issue”, it’s a human issue, and we need passionate male voices to help normalize the conversation, challenge stigma, and help educate the community.

Our first event will be held on December 11th at Montgomery College, Takoma Park from 3:00-4:00 PM. More sessions coming in the new year. We are looking to start training our volunteers as soon as possible. This is more than just volunteering, it’s stepping up as a role model and helping build a world where no one is shamed, silenced, or left behind because of something as natural as a period. If you believe in equity, dignity, and community impact, we would love to hear from you!

This opportunity is especially good for groups, and can also be served by one or two volunteers. Assist our elderly client keep their yards and gardens in good shape through the growing season and/or when the leaves fall. Choose to volunteer on one day, raking leaves or trimming plants, or make it ongoing from Spring through Autumn or beyond by cutting grass as needed, weeding and trimming, clearing snow or fallen branches after storms.

KindSoup

This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to join us virtually from the comfort of their kitchens.

We come together on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm via Zoom. We focus on delicious, healthy, and hearty soup and stew recipes to share with our families and community members. Soup is then donated to local food assistance providers to store in freezers. By doing so, we help to fill the critical need for food security in our community.

Sign on to our KindSoup Zoom space (Mondays at 5:00 pm ET), and our guest chef will lead us in cooking a yummy soup or stew together.

Volunteer with Humane World for Animals' (formerly called HSUS) Animal Rescue Team to help animals who are victims of illegal animal cruelty and disasters.

When the Animal Rescue Team responds - whether to a hoarding situation or dogfighting operation, hurricane or puppy mill - animal rescue volunteers at the Maryland care and rehabilitation center* assist in the on-going care of dogs, cats and other animals who have been rescued from harm.

Animal rescue volunteers come from all walks of life, generously giving their time to apply their skills and experience in response to animals in need. From animal handling and cage cleaning to administrative tasks, the work of animal rescue volunteers is at the heart of Humane World for Animals' mission to end animal suffering and cruelty.

There are 2 volunteer options:

Care Center ARV – Provide daily care and enrichment to the special populations housed at our Maryland care and rehabilitation center. Required trainings include Fear Free Shelters and a course on trauma-informed sheltering.

National ARVs: Deploy to our Maryland care and rehabilitation center or other locations as needed to provide daily care and enrichment and/or to support a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies. Specific trainings on safety, emergency management, the Incident Command System and other critical aspects of care are required.

Volunteers have an initial commitment period of one year and are requested to participate in at least one deployment per year. To help remove barriers to volunteering, approved travel expenses are paid or reimbursed by Humane World for Animals.

Are you a Junior or Senior interested in teaching and making a real difference in the lives of young children? Join us at Friendship Children’s Center and spend up to four hours a day alongside our teachers, helping infants through Pre-K students grow, learn, and thrive!

Volunteers are invited to knit, sew or crochet at home to make blankets as gifts for hospitalized children. Volunteers are also welcome to come pick up supplies, stay and make blankets in a group setting, and/or drop off your completed blanket on days when we are meeting in person. Meetings are held in the lower level of the University of Maryland extension office, Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park, 18410 Muncaster Road, Derwood.
