Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Want a delicious way to have some fun, improve your kitchen skills, learn a new recipe, make some delicious and nutritious food for your family and for others in the community AND earn SSL Hours?? On the first and third Sundays of every month, we will make a large pot of soup together!

This time around we will cook up Autumn Carrot and Sweet Potato Soup led by an experienced student KindSoup Chef via zoom. Join us from the comfort of your kitchen on Sunday, December 7th from 5pm-6pm.

Student Service Learning

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours. 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program. 


There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.


High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

Volunteer: Volunteer with Success in Style Hanging & Tagging Clothing Donations

These are the current volunteering options that we have available:
Retail: Volunteer with us in our retail shops, Charity’s Closet and Charity’s First Picks! Shifts are 4 hours long, Monday-Saturday 10am-2pm or 2pm-6pm and Sunday 11am-2pm or 2pm-6pm. Volunteering in our retail shops involves opening/closing the stores, managing the register, and assisting our clients and customers with coordinating outfits.
Processing Room: Help us hang and tag our clothing donations! Shifts are flexible with the option to sign up for 4 hours a shift or less. 
For those interested in Client Consultations, we ask that you volunteer in our retail shops for a total of 20 hours first before being considered. 
We ask new volunteers to commit to training with one of our volunteer trainers for two, four hour shifts. In this training, you will learn how to volunteer in the Processing Room AND in Retail. Shifts are Monday-Saturday 10am-2pm, 2pm-6pm and Sunday 11am-3pm, 2pm-6pm. After training, most of our volunteers sign up for shifts about 2-4 times a month at the least.

We ask new volunteers to commit to training with one of our volunteer trainers for two, four hour shifts. In this training, you will learn how to volunteer in the Processing Room AND in Retail. Shifts are Monday-Saturday 10am-2pm, 2pm-6pm and Sunday 11am-3pm, 2pm-6pm. After training, most of our volunteers sign up for shifts about 2-4 times a month at the least.

We will provide direct supervision by an adult nonprofit representative (who is not the student’s parent/guardian or relative) in any virtual space (including breakout sessions) for the entire session. 


Please review the following information while considering this opportunity

A student’s parent/guardian must provide our organization with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.


Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:


#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.


#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.

Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.


Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours:


#For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised.


#For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision:

Criteria for Successful Completion of Projects

For activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion:

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Photos of the work completed

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include:

Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause

Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution

Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes

Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL Hours

To ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used:

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Submission and Review Process

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours.

If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission.

Additional Notes

All activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes.

By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Volunteer: Summer Student Horticulture Volunteer Needed for Early-Stage Dementia Social Club Outdoor Garden

The JCA Samuel J. Gorlitz Kensington Club in Rockville is a social club designed for seniors in the early stage of memory loss. 

The Kensington Club@Parklawn on the JCA Headquarters Terrace has a large patio with raised flower beds and patio furniture. We are in search of 1-2 summer volunteers from June 1 to September 1(end date flexible), who are interested in horticulture and could provide regular care to patio plants at least one day per week, about 1-4 hours per week. Volunteer can take care of plants on Tuesdays or Thursdays anytime between 8-6pm. Student to communicate all lengthy and scheduled absences to supervisor to arrange coverage during this absence. Hours can vary during summer as long as mutually agreed upon between volunteer and supervisor. Orientation will be provided. The student must possess self-motivation, good judgement, good communication, and reliability to maintain this summer commitment to keep plants alive and thriving for the seniors in this day program. 

This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers who seek flex hours but who enjoy working with plants and providing an independent, indirect service to program for seniors with dementia.  

*For students, there is a potential for 20-30 SSL hours for a 8 week summer commitment. July 1 - September 1, 2023 (negotiable).

Volunteers will help care for the horses at Lifeline Horse Rescue. This includes feeding, haying, watering, grooming, stall cleaning, and tack cleaning. We want to encourage healthy food choices and use gardening as a way to understand the food chain.  Importantly, we hope to work with our girls to help establish a more reasonable pace of life by practicing patience and understanding the patterns and timing of seed-time-harvest.

If you have experience with seasonal or year-round vegetable, herb, and fruit gardening, and think you could provide hands-on instruction to a small group at your convenience, we would love for you to work with us.  Workshops would take place at our garden plot in spring/summer weather-permitting, as well as indoors at library or other community-based locations in Silver Spring, Maryland.

For the fall season, we could use some expertise in how to create small indoor gardens, and how to preserve the soil and prepare the ground for winter.

In spring, we would like to learn about how to select seeds, grow seedlings, prepare fertile ground for planting, planting strategies, and various types of gardening - in and out of soil.

We are also in need of carpenters to teach our group how to build raised beds for gardening as well as indoor gardening shelves.

We hope to partner with Home Depot or Lowe's for donations of gardening and building supplies.  We would be happy to have an adult volunteer to take on establishing that partnership and soliciting donations on our behalf.
