Clarksburg Yard has adopted a Gateway Center Drive! This is a 2 -miles stretch that runs from Shawnee Lane to Clarksburg Road and is parallel to Frederick Road behind our property. Every other month, we will be organizing a group of Middle and High School Students to clean up trash along the road.

Our mission is to participate in a community activity by keeping county-owned roadsides litter free. This opportunity is held outdoors and near the roads. We are asking all volunteers to read and have an adult sign the consent form prior to the event.

*Minors will NOT be able to participate without completed consent form.*

What will I be doing?

You will meet at 1pm at the Clarksburg Church and walk over to the designated area. You will be equipped with gloves, hefty trash bags, and pick-up tools. We will collect litter from the designated area and properly dispose of it. Clarksburg Church 22820 Frederick Rd Clarksburg Church, 20871

NOTE: You will be working outside, so please bring water bottles. Additionally, we are asking all volunteers to wear bright colored clothing and comfortable, closed-toed shoes.

Join us for a maintenance day at our Falmouth Road Habitat restoration project. We will be weeding and removing non-native invasives that are encroaching on the project. We provide all the necessary tools and gloves. Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes and bring water to drink.  Under 14 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Party in the Park is a beloved Olney Days tradition that brings the entire community together to celebrate the town. This year there will be a Sports Center - a 10 ft by 20 ft inflatable that has 6 different activities:  Axe throwing, baseball, soccer, football, archery, and basketball.  

This volunteer opportunity is to assist with collecting tickets and overseeing the play at the Sports Center.  Only 10-12 people will be at the Sports Center at any one time.  Volunteer must be able to stand/walk around and be comfortable instructing and correcting others. Volunteer will help people to understand how to play, watch the equipment (balls, "axes", bows & "arrows"), and ensure everyone is playing safely.

We're looking for dedicated volunteers to help out around our Montgomery County Warehouse, which takes in thousand of pounds of donated food, clothing, toys, household goods, diapers and more each day. Volunteers will help with the following projects: organizing and displaying donations, helping to take inventory, cleaning and organizing our space, making grocery bags for home deliveries, helping to load and unload delivery vehicles and more! Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. How to prepare: Volunteers should arrive wearing closed-toed shoes and clothing they can move around in and get dirty. Please note that the heating in our warehouse is currently out of service, so please dress warmly, wearing layers and coats for your shift. Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control.(Those participating will receive double community service hours- (NOT FOR SSL). *ONLY FOR THIS SHIFT*)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

Our Earth Day event brings neighbors together to care for the environment through a community cleanup and sustainable gardening project. Together, we honor Prathertown’s historic legacy , a Gaithersburg neighborhood founded in 1883 by emancipated people, while protecting its natural spaces.

Set up and organize the refreshment station (tables, coolers, supplies).

Distribute water and light snacks to volunteers during the event.

Monitor supplies, restock as needed, and maintain cleanliness at the station.

Assist with collecting canned food donations for the Earth Day food drive.

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend.

Join us in honoring Earth Day with a community cleanup and gardening in Prathertown! Together, we’ll make a hands-on difference by keeping our local environment healthy and beautiful on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (weather permitting). 

Spend a Saturday outdoors enjoying the fresh air, connecting with neighbors, and helping care for our planet. Participants will collect litter and recyclables along 1.5 miles Wightman Road. Students can earn SSL hours. We’ll meet at the corner of Prathertown and Wightman Road. In the morning we will be having a community cleanup, followed by sustainable gardening. We will work together to count and take photos of every bag of trash collected for a report to the Department of Transportation. You’re also welcome to bring a canned food item for our Earth Day food drive supporting local families.

Impact

Prathertown is a neighborhood in Gaithersburg originally founded in 1883 by emancipated people. It has a long and deep rooted history that is evident today in Prathertown's many artifacts and historical homes. By volunteering, you will be contributing to the health of Prathertown’s environment and reducing litter. 

By collecting and removing litter from Prathertown, the animals benefit from a cleaner, safer habitat that helps protect them from pollution, injury, and contaminated food sources.

What is Carousel Day?

This is a festival in celebration of Glen Echo Park's 105-year-old Dentzel Carousel as it opens for the season! In addition to riding the carousel, families are welcome to enjoy many other FREE activities throughout the Park including performances, a spring parade and maypole celebration, hands-on arts & crafts, short film screenings, open artist studios & galleries, and lots more! This year’s Carousel Day performances will focus on music and dance from the African diaspora, in recognition of its influences over more than a century on American music and dance styles such as tap and hip hop. Live performances include: Sole Defined, National Hand Dance Association, The Eric Byrd Trio, Elements Dance Company...and more!

How can you help?

The early shift tasks will be helping set up performance spaces and information tents and craft tables with supplies and tables and chairs, and then helping with the flow of the event. The late shift tasks will start with helping with the flow of the event and then breaking down all the areas and putting supplies and chairs and tables away. Please specify if you prefer to volunteer 9am-1pm or 1-5pm or 9am-5pm.

Perfect opportunity for high school students to earn SSL hours!

Safety Town is an interactive learning opportunity for children ages 2 - 7.  It features a ground tarp marked with road, crosswalks, arrows, railroad tracks, etc.  We add traffic signs and signals, as well as miniature buildings, to complete the town.  Children ride bikes, trikes and scooters through as a play led learning activity.  Assistants help them navigate properly; following the signs and signals accordingly.  

Stations you may work include:

- helmet station - assisting with getting participants set up with the proper helmet and choosing an appropriate vehicle (bike/trike/scooter), introducing concepts, collecting equipment when participants come off tarp and preparing it for next user in the town

- tarp of Safety Town -  very interactive with the children; prompting them about the signs and signals see, educating them on what they mean, making sure they are following the rules, directing them off tarp when done, etc.

- resource table - letting children and caregivers know about the resources we have for them to take home, making sure table stays stocked, etc.

Safety Town is all about creating a fun and engaging experience for the participants.  The goal is for them to walk away with a better awareness and understanding of traffic rules and safe pedestrian and bicycle behaviors to help keep them safe in and around their communities.  You will be sent some materials to read ahead of time reviewing some of the key concepts of basic traffic safety that we are promoting.

Archaeology Day gives families a chance to get a glimpse into the world of an archaeologist!

This free, family-friendly day is filled with hands-on activities, demonstrations, games, costumed interpreters, food trucks, music, and more! Volunteers are essential for the success of this event! There are three ways to volunteer with Family Archaeology Day:

Volunteer with The Urban Studio in celebrating Montgomery County Green Fest while also connecting the community with nature in the Chesapeake Bay through art. This tabling event aims to provide nature art-themed coloring pages where families can stop by the table and color illustrations of local plants and animals.

Join us for a maintenance day at our Falmouth Road Habitat restoration project. We will be weeding and removing non-native invasives that are encroaching on the project. We provide all the necessary tools and gloves. Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes and bring water to drink.  Under 14 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

You are welcome to participate as often as you’d like — monthly attendance is encouraged but not required.

Why It Matters

During rainstorms, discarded trash and recycling wash into storm drains and flow into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By removing litter from our neighborhood, we help prevent pollution and protect our waterways — even our drinking water. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community and environment.

The Germantown Historical Society, the Button farm Living History, and a Scout Troop sponsor open air Flea Markets on the first Saturday April through November. Teen volunteers can earn SSL hours by helping with parking within the lot, help buyers carry their purchases, and help to manage the lot and pick up trash -- always in pairs and with adult supervision. Adult volunteers will help with traffic control and supervising the vendors.  The Flea Markets are lots of fun -- you get to meet all kinds of people and dogs, and you get to go around the Market and find your own treasures.

Camp Counselors are required to volunteer for at least one week-long camp totaling 40 hours per session (20 hours for half-day preschool camps). Camps run Monday through Friday. All applicants must attend a Camp Counselor Training on Saturday, June 13 from 10am to 2pm at Locust Grove Nature Center. Camp Counselors must be comfortable working outside for the majority of their shift in variable conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and mud. Camp activities make use of our various outdoor areas including the nature play space, the creek, campfire rings, outdoor classrooms, and our natural surface trails. All volunteers are expected to show up for their shift on time, be fully engaged with their group, report incidents or safety concerns to staff immediately, and proactively work to create a positive camp atmosphere for all. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and submit to a background check.

Open Door Sports provides adapted sports programs to children with special needs and is looking for middle and high school aged peer buddies to volunteer their time to work with a player and help them find success and joy on the soccer field.  The program is run by a trained coach and two assistant coaches and the role of the peer buddy is to be a friend to the players and help them to get the most out of their time playing.  The program at Rock View Elementary in Kensington runs from 3:30 - 4:30pm every Tuesday afternoon for a 7 week period beginning on April 7.  We'll finish the season on May 19th.  We prefer for peer buddies to commit to the entire 7 week session.

Join the Community Design Lab for a hands-on Volunteer Build Day as we bring our student-designed conservation garden to life at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. This is the final step of our Spring Design+Build program, where local students and volunteers work side by side to transform ideas into a living landscape that supports pollinators, manages stormwater, and beautifies the community.

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to dig in, plant, and learn. We’ll provide tools, gloves, and guidance. Together, we’ll install native plants like black-eyed susans, purple coneflowers, and butterfly weed, creating a lasting outdoor classroom and gathering space for all.

We are seeking 20–25 volunteers to help prepare NCC’s Urban Garden for the growing season. Volunteers will assist with gardening, planting, and general cleanup across the garden’s 83 raised beds in the ADA‑accessible space.

We are excited to invite volunteers to be part of DMV Sprummer Fest 2026, a vibrant community event bringing families together for a day of fun, culture, food, music, and engaging activities for all ages. Volunteers play a key role in making this event successful by helping with event setup, activity coordination, guest assistance, parking management and overall event support.

We are Artistic is seeking volunteers to support their card‑making activity at the Best Buddies Friendship Walk on Sunday, April 25th, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the National Mall in Washington, DC, where helpers will greet participants and assist in creating uplifting cards for children in hospitals. This is a great chance for students to earn community service hours while promoting kindness and inclusion. Interested individuals can an activity assistant.

Olney Days – Party in the Park

     Party in the Park is a beloved Olney Days tradition that brings the entire community together to celebrate the town. This year, eight large inflatables will transform the ball field at Olney Manor Park into a hub of fun — and we need strong, dependable volunteers to help make it happen. Volunteers will assist with setting up and taking down the inflatables under the direction of professional staff from the inflatable company.

     Responsibilities include:

     Because take-down is much easier when you understand how everything was assembled, volunteers are strongly encouraged to sign up for both shifts if possible (but not required). After confirmation of your sign up, Volunteers will communicate and report to Carter Darrington, owner of Empire Inflatables that is providing the equipment.

     Please note: Inflatables are weather-dependent. If rain causes the field to close, this volunteer opportunity will be canceled. In that case, volunteers will be notified by email by 9:00 am on May 2.

The Rock Creek Conservation Corps (RC3) program provides high school students in Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC with a 6-week (June 29 to August 7) paid summer job in the conservation field. Students gain hands-on field experience, learn about environmental restoration efforts, and develop teamwork and leadership skills. Students learn about forest health, water quality, and stormwater management, and apply what they learn by participating in invasive plant removals, litter cleanups, and other related activities. Upon completion of the program, students have a wealth of knowledge and skills that they take with them in their next steps and gain a deeper connection to their community and Rock Creek.

As an RC3 member, you’ll work outdoors in Rock Creek and surrounding areas, helping to restore and protect this beautiful natural space. A majority of the program will take place outside, except when weather conditions are unsafe. Seeking volunteers for our overnight weekend camp, Camp Erin, for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp offered to children ages 6 through 17 and includes age-appropriate discussions and fun-filled creative experiences designed to help children share their feelings with their peers who are in similar situations. Camp Erin is offered in partnership between CaringMatters and Bar-T, a premier childcare provider. Camp Erin Montgomery County is scheduled to be held April 24-26, 2026 at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick.

We need adult volunteers who serve in a variety of roles. We especially need volunteers who can serve as a "Big Buddy" to a child who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. A Big Buddy provides caring support to his or her assigned Little Buddy by listening to the child discuss the loss, both in the supervised group sessions and throughout the camp events.

We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

We are currently accepting volunteers for this summers program which starts in June of 2026. More details to follow.

Help teachers and support children throughout the day. This may include setting up and cleaning up activities, assisting before and after water play, helping with transitions, and supporting camp-wide events. Please stay actively involved with the children. Sitting off to the side is discouraged. You can read stories, play with children, help during outdoor time, and assist teachers as needed. Weekly assignments will be given on your first day.

We work with children ages 2–5. Interact in age-appropriate ways and help keep children safe at all times. Maintain respectful physical boundaries—do not pick up children, carry them, or have them sit on your lap. You will never be asked to change diapers or clothes.

Camp runs 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please arrive by 9:00 AM for a brief meeting.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for vaccinated individuals to help us pack and distribute food to the families that we serve in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These staples and fresh produce help them with their food insecurity.

The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. Environmental Educator Assistants provide high-quality programming and interpretive experiences for our participants and guests. They both assist naturalists during various programs (school programs, scout programs, public programs, birthday parties, etc.) as well as design and facilitate independent interpretive stations. This position includes public speaking, program set-up/tear-down, animal handling, writing interpretive station outlines, and using biofacts (skulls, pelts, feathers, etc.).

Environmental Educator Assistants will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, comfort in working with all ages and abilities, and a passion for connecting with others. Volunteers will collaborate with nature center staff to develop and implement environmental education-themed activities for the general public and for special events at CCNC. Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Trail Guardians help to keep the trails in our surrounding forest preserve clean and well maintained. This position includes picking up litter/recycling and keeping trail borders maintained. All work is done independently without the assistance of a naturalist.

Trail Guardians must demonstrate a love of the outdoors. Volunteers will receive an orientation course as well as direct guidance on where and when to perform the work. This position includes daily check-ins with the CCNC volunteer coordinator to determine work schedule, quality of work, hours worked, etc. Volunteers will be supervised by the volunteer coordinator and staff naturalists.

Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required.

Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

We have quite a number of elderly and special needs animals at our sanctuary, and are looking for someone who is specifically interested in and capable of assisting with their care several times a week on an ongoing basis.  Responsibilities include: 

- Giving oral medication as instructed

- Administering shots (IM and SubQ) as instructed

- Bandaging 

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

- Keeping detailed observation notes

Additional duties could include: 

- transport of animals to local veterinarians

- light cleaning of their housing areas and replenishing waters

Must have a current tetanus shot; be capable of lifting at least 60 pounds; have own vehicle and good driving record; some experience with large animals highly preferred. 

Looking for education-minded adults who love to work with young folks in helping them learn about animals and responsibility. Retired people especially welcome!

Our Saturday workdays run from 9-1 and involve cleaning barns, putting down fresh bedding, scrubbing water troughs and buckets, checking on animals, doing pasture maintenance, painting fences, and more.  Young people will learn the skills of proper tool usage (and putting them away!), how to interact safely and appropriately with large animals, how to work with many different kinds of people in a team, and more. This is a very welcoming and warm environment.

Nourish Now is looking for pick-up/delivery drivers. Main responsibilities will include picking up food donations from a variety of companies and organizations in and around Montgomery County, MD. The job will require driving a box truck and/or a cargo style van.  We are open Monday-Friday 9:30 AM-3:30 PM. Please let us know what weekdays and times you are available!

Miracle League Buddies are volunteers ranging in age from elementary school to senior citizens.  These include family members, individuals, and local youth and civic groups.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.”  Many people refer to the Buddy volunteers as “Angels in the Outfield.”   Buddies can bring their own equipment but that is not required. What is required is to provide smiles and laughter to the Miracle League Players.

The minimum age for a Buddy is 13.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.  The goals for Miracle League Buddies are:

Volunteers will assist program staff by helping to set up and organize activities, engaging with children to foster an inclusive and supportive environment, and ensuring smooth transitions between activities. They may also help care for the equestrian facility general barn chores by tidying up spaces, preparing equipment, and assisting with basic horse care under supervision.

Join Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland's Crew Leader team, a dedicated group of skilled construction volunteers. Crew Leaders are the backbone of the construction department.  They work alongside Habitat's licensed Construction crew and work on new construction, rehabilitation of vacant homes, and repair work throughout our community.  Crew Leaders oversee small groups of unskilled volunteers, helping to ensure their safety and the successful completion of their assigned construction task.  Crew leaders need some construction skills, but can learn more skills from our constructions staff.  Being a Crew Leader is a fun way to use your current skills, learn new skills, give back to the community, and get to know other incredible volunteers!

Key Responsibilities: 

•     Oversee unskilled volunteers on Habitat construction sites, helping to ensure they are working safely and effectively.

•     Have a positive attitude, keeping the unskilled volunteers engaged and excited.

•     Assist Construction Managers on various construction tasks throughout the life of each project.

•     Complete safety training both virtually and hosted by HFHMM staff.

•     Provide feedback and input where needed to improve processes and volunteer engagement.

•     Be safe and have fun!

Qualifications:     

•      Some basic construction skills.

•      Willingness to lead, train, and engage other volunteers.          

•      Positive attitude.

•     Ability to work with diverse groups.

Time commitment:  At least one full day of volunteering once a month, 8:00am to 3:00pm
