Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend. 

Meet at the Capital Crescent Trail where it crosses Dorset Avenue in Chevy Chase, MD 20815.  Look for us near at the Trail crossing.  There is street parking on Kennedy Drive.  If you are late, find us on the trail, working downhill towards River Road.

This opportunity is especially good for groups, and can also be served by one or two volunteers. Assist our elderly client keep their yards and gardens in good shape through the growing season and/or when the leaves fall. Choose to volunteer on one day, raking leaves or trimming plants, or make it ongoing from Spring through Autumn or beyond by cutting grass as needed, weeding and trimming, clearing snow or fallen branches after storms.

The UpCounty Hub is serving families in need. We provide fresh produce, shelf stable foods, emergency and hygiene items, and some social services for the families that we serve.

Volunteer duties vary from loading boxes into the cars or taking data.

Description: While we no longer operate a pantry at Lakeforest Mall, we're still just as committed to serving the Gaithersburg community. Our food distribution operations have moved to South Lake Elementary School. Every Tuesday, So What Else, with the help of our incredible team, provides free food to over 500 people. Volunteers can park in the parking lot that is to the right down the hill close to the playground at the school.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. This shift involves interacting with clients, other volunteers, and So What Else team members. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty( NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

10:30 am to 2:30 pm ( 4 Hours): Volunteers will assist in setting up the distribution, breaking down empty boxes, cleaning up, and assisting with the distribution breakdown. 

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

To get to our distribution site for your shift, Type "South Lake Elementary School, 18201 Contour Rd, Gaithersburg, MD" into your GPS. This will guide you to the school. For parking, please use the lot located to the right, down the hill, near the playground. After parking, walk up toward the distribution area and look for the So What Else van or team setup. Locate a team member and let them know you are there to volunteer at the distribution.

In addition to our food pantry and pop-up distributions, the So What Else Montgomery County team also operates a robust home delivery program for clients all across the DMV who are unable to leave their homes, either due to disabilities, lack of transportation, or both. As a result, we are always in need of volunteer home delivery drivers that can donate their time, and their vehicle, to help transport groceries from our pantry to our clients. 

Requirements: Interested drivers must be 18 years or older, bring their own vehicle, and have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. 

Activity Description: Once signed up, volunteers will reach out to Megan ahead of time, confirming their presence, and then arrive at our pantry on the day and time of their choosing to pick up grocery bags and deliver them. Each driver will follow a predetermined route prepared by our team. Please text her once you sign up to get the delivery route with the number 2407054345. Most delivery routes take around 1-2 hours to complete, depending on the number of clients that day. More information can be provided at the time of the pick up.

*At this time, we DO NOT provide vehicles for drivers.

After you pull into the lot, drive straight and turn left as if you are headed to Dogtopia. Keep driving and pass Dogtopia. Our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. Parking is not permitted in front of Dogtopia and against the fence. When you arrive please park and look for a staff person by the loading dock or in the resource center, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday, So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help direct traffic and should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and clothing to move around and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors, so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift.

**Only 18 years and older, and you will be standing for a long time and be alone for the majority of the shift**

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

WE TRAIN YOU – You will learn everything you need to know to become a certified Emergency Medical Technician – no expense to you. Volunteering with Fire/Rescue is rewarding and offers the flexibility to contribute according to your availability. Membership is dependent upon successful completion of a fingerprint, background check and medical exam - all provided free.

Join our mission to support individuals and families in need by helping us move essential items safely and efficiently! As a Volunteer Driver, you’ll play a crucial role in getting items from generous community members/the Patesi Foundation to those who need them most.

Responsibilities:

Pick up and drop off donations to and from various locations

Assist with transporting items during major events and community initiatives

Ensure items are handled with care and delivered on time

Take pictures of items or donors when picking up or dropping off

What We’re Looking For:

A valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle

Enthusiasm for helping others and being part of a community-driven cause

Ability to lift and carry items safely (some light to moderate physical activity required)

Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed.

This opportunity is available for student volunteers to earn SSL hours. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. Students will need to complete sections 1 and 3 of MCPS Form 560-51 in full. In lieu of section 2 of MCPS Form 560-51, students should attach the “SSL Hour Form” completed and provided to the student by the City of Rockville supervisor.

MUM serves individuals and families in crisis in the Silver Spring, Wheaton, Takoma Park, Kensington, Rockville and Aspen Hill communities, specifically residents within eight zip codes of Montgomery County (20902, 20906, 20853, 20895, 20896, 20901, 20910, and 20912). The City of Rockville's Youth Mentoring Program is looking for caring adults and older youth, ages 16 and up, to support our Horticulture Kids Program. Volunteers will assist with gardening and growing activities designed for young learners. Children will engage in garden-based activities that teach them about gardening, environmental conservation, biology, chemistry, and even math. We also enjoy discussing important processes such as pollination and photosynthesis. Kids will experience the various growth stages of their vegetables, from planting to harvesting. Environmental Educator Assistants provide high-quality programming and interpretive experiences for our participants and guests. They both assist naturalists during various programs (school programs, scout programs, public programs, birthday parties, etc.) as well as design and facilitate independent interpretive stations. This position includes public speaking, program set-up/tear-down, animal handling, writing interpretive station outlines, and using biofacts (skulls, pelts, feathers, etc.).

Environmental Educator Assistants will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, comfort in working with all ages and abilities, and a passion for connecting with others. Volunteers will collaborate with nature center staff to develop and implement environmental education-themed activities for the general public and for special events at CCNC. Volunteers would be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as staff naturalists as they perform the work on-site.

Environmental Educator Assistants will be assigned specific programs to assist with and/or have a set schedule to facilitate interpretive stations. Schedule and the amount of time worked per week will be based on both your availability and the Nature Center’s needs. Work is done both indoors and outdoors throughout the year, occasionally in inclement (though safe) weather. The position requires some light lifting, walking on uneven terrain, prolonged standing, and bending. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Due to the amount of training this position entails, we require at least a six-month time commitment to be considered for the position.

Trail Guardians help to keep the trails in our surrounding forest preserve clean and well maintained. This position includes picking up litter/recycling and keeping trail borders maintained. All work is done independently without the assistance of a naturalist.

Trail Guardians must demonstrate a love of the outdoors. Volunteers will receive an orientation course as well as direct guidance on where and when to perform the work. Volunteers assist with the Learn to Swim program at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center. Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors. They also help take attendance, set out the kickboards, diving rings, and lifejackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required.

Not every neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., region offers convenient access to a brick-and-mortar food pantry or other hunger resources. To help fill this gap, the Capital Area Food Bank brings no-cost pop-up markets directly into neighborhoods where they’re needed through their Mobile Markets, which offer monthly distribution of free fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable food, and other groceries to area residents.

Mobile Markets occur on the last Thursday of each month at the Rockville Senior Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with food distribution, including setting up tables of produce, bagging produce, helping families select and take food to their cars, and cleaning up.

Spread holiday cheer by adding an ornament to our Community Tree.  The Tree will go up at the Kentlands Mansion in December.  This event is open to all ages. One ornament=1 SSL hour, with a maximum of two ornaments. Ornament supplies can be purchased on your own, or select supplies are available at the Kentlands Mansion. The Kentlands Mansion will post tutorials on their social media pages to create ornaments with materials most people have at home. Ornaments are due NLT Dec 19th at 4:00 p.m.

We have a Reggio Emilia inspired summer program for children ages 2-5 years. Volunteers are needed to assist educators with daily activities for children, such as art, music, water play, story time, sports and movement, and more. Volunteer hours are from 9am to 1pm.

Description

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

- Lifting and/or moving large animals (primarily sheep and goats)

Join Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland's Crew Leader team, a dedicated group of skilled construction volunteers. Crew Leaders are the backbone of the construction department.  They work alongside Habitat's licensed Construction crew and work on new construction, rehabilitation of vacant homes, and repair work throughout our community.  Crew Leaders oversee small groups of unskilled volunteers, helping to ensure their safety and the successful completion of their assigned construction task.  Crew leaders need some construction skills, but can learn more skills from our constructions staff.  Being a Crew Leader is a fun way to use your current skills, learn new skills, give back to the community, and get to know other incredible volunteers!

Key Responsibilities: 

•     Oversee unskilled volunteers on Habitat construction sites, helping to ensure they are working safely and effectively.

•     Have a positive attitude, keeping the unskilled volunteers engaged and excited.

BECA is seeking Summer Camp Counselors for our annual Summer Camp, a summer bridge program for 1st – 6th-grade students from our partner schools, San Jeronimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School, in Honduras.

For interested volunteers who are not available during our summer camp weeks, we offer similar service learning volunteer opportunities for small groups - including student groups, families, and other organizations/companies.

The three-week summer camp (that happens annually - typically the last week of June through the first two weeks of July) includes fun games, activities, and literacy and math enrichment. The camp contributes to preventing summer learning loss and offers BECA's students an enriching opportunity during a time when many of their peers are still in school (public schools in Honduras operate on a February - November schedule). Our camp counselors and Counselors in Training learn just as much as our students do and have just as much fun too. 

Our counselors are a wonderfully varied group - including recent high school graduates, current college students on summer vacation, educators looking for service learning summer opportunities, and even retirees from all over the world. 

All Summer Camp Counselors (and other service learning volunteers) connect with the BECA team and each other via email and two onboarding video calls prior to coming to Honduras to discuss the following:

packing/arriving in-country

brainstorming the summer camp theme

lesson planning topics for reading & writing, arts & crafts, and physical education

We kick off with a 3-4 day orientation in-country (shorter for shorter experiences)

Summer Camp runs 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Monday through Friday

In the afternoons, the team is busy completing a service project, participating in a reflection series, going on home visits, or participating in team bonding activities

Because the Summer Camp is a supplemental program, BECA recoups the program’s expenses through donations paid by Summer Camp Counselors and CITs. We ask that you contribute or fundraise $1,500 for the BECA program to help defray costs (staff support, food, accommodation, and training). A limited number of reduced contribution slots may be available. If you are interested in a service learning experience for your group, we are happy to discuss a fee structure that makes sense for all. We can also help groups/individuals set up a fundraising page using our networkforgood platform.

For current college students and educators, please note that volunteers in the past have successfully applied for on-campus grant monies or local grant opportunities to cover this expense and travel. We encourage you to explore what opportunities your college/community offers to subsidize summer experiences. Seeking volunteers for our overnight weekend camp, Camp Erin, for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp offered to children ages 6 through 17 and includes age-appropriate discussions and fun-filled creative experiences designed to help children share their feelings with their peers who are in similar situations. Camp Erin is offered in partnership between CaringMatters and Bar-T, a premier childcare provider. Camp Erin Montgomery County is scheduled to be held May 3-5, 2024 at Bar-T Mountainside in Frederick.

We need adult volunteers who serve in a variety of roles. We especially need volunteers who can serve as a "Big Buddy" to a child who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. A Big Buddy provides caring support to his or her assigned Little Buddy by listening to the child discuss the loss, both in the supervised group sessions and throughout the camp events.

Volunteers are integral to restoring the Anacostia River. It is thanks to the work of the hundreds of thousands of Anacostia Watershed Society volunteers through the years that the river has improved. Our volunteers restore wetlands, plant native plants, collect seeds, and help with many other projects - often times pieces of larger plans that make a big impact on the river. All of our volunteer activities have an educational component and are an opportunity to learn about the watershed.

This spring, CSA Flag Football is gearing up for another exciting season, offering kids ages 5 to 14 a chance to develop their skills, learn teamwork, and have fun in a fast-paced, non-contact football environment. Our program is built on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and community, and we’re looking for current and former athletes to help make it a success.

As a Junior Coach, you’ll play an important role in mentoring young athletes, assisting with practices, and supporting game-day operations—all while earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

Join us this season and help shape the future of Clarksburg football

In the middle of August we'll begin another great Coyotes Cross Country season for kids ages 5 to 14 (elementary and middle school kids).  Practice will be every Tuesday and Thursday at Rocky Hill Middle School from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, as well as Sunday afternoons at 2:00 -- somewhere fun -- if we don’t have a meet.  We’ll participate in 6 or 7 local league meets on Sunday afternoons beginning in the middle of September.  Our last regular season meet will likely be early November.  Many of our kids will participate in “post season” which will include a national championship meet in late November or early December.

High school students can earn SSL hours by assisting at practices and/or meets under a lead coach's supervision.  The Junior Coach commitment is super-flexible.  Attend practices/meets as often or as little as you'd like.  We offer a great environment for high school students to both gain coaching experience and serve younger children in the community.  Students will lead warm-up runs, facilitate running drills and stretches, assist with conversational pace runs, and time the kids doing speed workouts.  Are you fast?  You'll likely help with our 13 & 14 year-olds.  Not all that fast?  You'll help with the youngest kids.  Helping kids grow and achieve great things is a very rewarding experience.  Coyotes Cross Country is the 2024 AAU Maryland Team Champion -- both boys and girls.  And our 7&8 year-old boys are 2024 AAU National Champions.  Let's go!

Drivers are needed to deliver breakfast bags to homeless shelters in Rockville and Gaithersburg.  Volunteers may pick up bags every Thursday between 10 am - 1 pm at Kingdom Care Center - 11700 Beltsville Dr., Calverton, MD. Drivers must have SUV or large vehicle and be at least 18 years of age.

Volunteers are needed to help distribute food to Manna participants, including setting up, checking participants in, directing traffic, and loading cars.  

This activity takes place outside, rain or shine. 

Ideally we are looking for volunteers that can commit to weekly schedule but intermittent opportunities may also be available.  You must schedule shifts in advance.  We are currently looking for 1-2 additional volunteers per shift.

Volunteers must be 16 or older.  This is a physical activity and includes bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 lbs in weight.  Volunteers must be able to work independently, converse with Manna’s clients & volunteers, and easily transition between many tasks with minimal instruction.

Construction volunteers work alongside Habitat’s experienced Site Supervisors and Crew Leaders, our experienced regular volunteers, and the families who will purchase Habitat homes.

Join our Green Corps team and become a core volunteer in our Neighborhood Engagement Department!  Volunteers with experience in landscaping and gardening are needed to help lead teams on Neighborhood Engagement projects. As a volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, you will be involved in the following key tasks:

Providing Guidance and Support: As a mentor, you will offer guidance and encouragement to our participants, helping them build confidence in their tasks and abilities.

Skill Development: You will assist participants with job-related skills around our main barn, chickens, and soapery. 

Hands-On Training: Volunteers help create simulated work environments where participants can practice their skills. This hands-on approach is crucial for their learning and development. Personalized Mentorship: Building a one-on-one relationship with participants to understand their individual needs and goals, providing tailored support and advice.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, and around the horses. We offer comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your mentoring role. Additionally, working closely with our participants and other volunteers is a unique and enriching experience that fosters personal growth and community development.

Want to share your love of history? Become a tour guide at the historic one-room Kingsley Schoolhouse in Little Bennett Regional Park.  Help visitors learn what school was like in the past.  Training provided! The school is furnished as it was in the 1920s in a beautiful rural setting. This position is very rewarding as most of our visitors really enjoy learning what school was like back in early Montgomery County! 

We're looking for volunteers with good communication skills, who enjoy working outdoors and can handle all types of conditions as the schoolhouse has no air conditioning or heat.

Hello! We are looking for some help picking up the donations we receive. We need drivers/movers to drive their own cars or our rental vehicles to pick up donations of furniture and household goods all over Montgomery County and bring them to our storage facility in Aspen Hill. We ask that donations already be out of the house and on the porch for our volunteers to pick up. You can volunteer in a group or we can pair you with a partner. The AHFP is a 455 acre park open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset. It is a beautiful setting of a historic farm, including several outbuildings and a farmhouse.

Near the farmhouse are two demonstration gardens that are used to explain how people used smaller gardens to feed themselves and their families, and a garden for pleasure with beautiful flowers.

We need your help with watering, weeding, pruning, and other routine care. We are looking for help on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. or Saturday during the growing season, flexible schedule worked out with site manager.

Some gardening experience is helpful, but training will be offered. High school youth 16 and older are welcome!

Duties for the maintenance of the garden beds include:
- Watering
- Weeding
- Dead heading
- Raking

Requirements include:
- Some gardening experience.
- Able to work out in different weather conditions, include heat, cold, humidity.
- Able to bend, kneel, grasp, lift weight up to 15 lbs.

Join the Gardening Team & plant and maintain gardens at Inwood House. In this role, volunteers will help cultivate grounds that are well-cared for and welcoming. Volunteers who enjoy being outdoors, working with their hands, engaging with residents and educating residents on gardening, and being creative will thrive in this role.

COMMITMENT This position has flexible hours, and we will work with your schedule. Having one consistent day/time per week to assist in the gardens and assist the residents with gardening is preferred.

If you have 2-3 hours free on a Wednesday, in the late morning or early afternoon, you can make a big difference to our neighbors in need.

Seniors, families without child care or cars, and disabled individuals,  cannot take advantage of most food distribution options.  Imagine trying to take a bus to pick up free food if you had toddlers, or used a wheelchair, or had an invalid spouse at home you had to care for!

Oak Chapel Food Hub helps people in these situations. Each week, we fill 60 bags with produce, bread and staples, customized to the families' preferences where possible.  Where we need your help is in getting this food to the people we have promised it to.

Winter Growth is an Adult Daycare, as well as an Assisted Living. Our daycare runs Monday-Friday from 10 am-3 pm. We include stimulating activities that our clients and residents can enjoy. Our services are designed to meet the needs of older and disabled adults; many who have a form of dementia.

We are looking for people who are involved in sports, fitness and the desire to work with children, teens and young adults. They must be dependable, energetic, motivated and creative people who are interested in teaching sports and fitness activities to participants with developmental disabilities including ADD, ADHD, and those on the autistic spectrum. You will be learning unique and innovative strategies to help them learn how to play sports. The experience is very rewarding and will give you a very good idea of the wide range of developmental disabilities in our world. A love and knowledge of sports and fitness is required.

We have extra long-sleeve shirts and gloves to protect you against irritating plants, but you might prefer to wear your own. We also recommend bringing a spare pair of long pants if you don't plan to wear them, since some of our crops, such as squash and okra, can be itchy.

Learn to operate street cars and become a voice of transit history! The dedicated members of our Operations team begin training as museum docents — the human connection to street car history and technology, guiding visitors through their museum experience. Further training may qualify them to become Conductors, who assist the Operator during street car runs. Volunteers at least age 18 with further training and having successfully completed a qualification test will have the opportunity to become one of our street car operators. The Montgomery Parks Stream Striders volunteer program is accepting applications! Stream Striders facilitate conservation projects that involve an educational component as well as a service component. Applications are open for adult volunteers interested in leadership, watershed education, & community engagement at their local stream valley parks.

Montgomery Parks can be a great place for you to do your Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award projects!

Although sometimes Park Staff have projects in mind, the number of applicants far outnumbers them. It is often up to the scout to find a suitable project. We suggest you choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore. 

Park staff will work with you to review your project proposal prior to approval.  The scout will then be responsible for good communication with Park Staff, and completing the project in a timely manner.
