Reach's Housing Program is seeking a volunteer to help a resident prepare for the GED exam. The volunteer will provide one-on-one instruction virtually or in person at one of our two permanent supportive houses located in Rockville. The Director of Client Services will coordinate with the client and the volunteer to arrange a mutually convenient instruction schedule.

Reach’s LOP is seeking volunteers to help school-aged children with their homework and other educational activities (under direct supervision of childcare staff). Must be 14+ years old.  There are two class sessions per year and tutors are asked to work through the whole session: Spring (March through mid-June) or Fall (September through mid-December). In person,  one or two nights each week.

The Washington English Center is recruiting online and in-person volunteers to teach and tutor English!

About the Washington English Center:

Since 1993, Washington English Center (WEC), a community-based program, has offered English and literacy training to low-income adult immigrants in the greater Washington area.

What our volunteers do:

Volunteers meet once a week online or in person in downtown DC for 1-3 hours a week for 11 weeks. Volunteers follow a provided syllabus and textbook and are given ongoing training. No teaching experience is required!

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once-a-week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule.

Spread holiday cheer by adding an ornament to our Community Tree.  The Tree will go up at the Kentlands Mansion in December.  This event is open to all ages. One ornament=1 SSL hour, with a maximum of two ornaments. Ornament supplies can be purchased on your own, or select supplies are available at the Kentlands Mansion. The Kentlands Mansion will post tutorials on their social media pages to create ornaments with materials most people have at home. Ornaments are due NLT Dec 19th at 4:00 p.m.

Silver Spring Village sustains a robust neighbors-helping-neighbors network that supports older adults who wish to live as independently as possible and be fully engaged in their community as they age. Our service area includes zip codes 20910, 20901, 20815 east of Rock Creek Park part of 20902 (Wheaton) east and south of Wheaton Regional Park as well as Kemp Mill.

Through our Tech Coaching program, members of the Village receive one-to-one tutoring on technology devices. We are seeking Volunteers who will work with members to help them gain confidence in their use of technology. This role can be done either virtually or in person depending on what the member and coach decide. Along with the orientation/training that all volunteers receive, Tech Coaches receive a training specific to this activity.

Volunteering with Silver Spring Village is flexible, you can spend as much or as little time as your schedule permits. Village volunteers must undergo a criminal background screening and attend an orientation/training session before volunteering. Heart pillows are ideal for those who received surgical procedures near the underarm, and can act as a protective barrier between sensitive areas and the car seatbelt. Volunteers may choose to make sewn or crocheted heart-shaped pillows to show patients that we care!

NOTE: We do NOT accept no-sew pillows.

We welcome unisex colors and patterns (NO holiday or religious patterns, as noted in our project guidelines) and recommend a size of 9 x 9 inches, using cotton fabric for sewn pillows. Supervision Requirements:
An adult nonprofit representative (who is not the student’s parent/guardian or relative) will provide direct supervision in any virtual space, including breakout sessions, for the entire session.

Parental Approval:
A student’s parent/guardian must provide our nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering.

Account Usage:
Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Direct Engagement:
Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor, who will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

Session Hosting:
The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Help craft soft, colorful amigurumi creatures for patients undergoing cancer treatments. These thoughtful gifts not only brighten the patients' days but also serve as a symbol of care and encouragement during a challenging time. Please feel free to add keychains to the mini crochet creatures!

In terms of sizing, the mini crochet animals should be about the size of the palm of your hand, while the larger crochet animals may be the size of the hand itself. Due to the size limitations of our care kits, we will not be able to accept crochet animals larger than the size of an average adult hand. Thanks for your understanding and support!

Our volunteer friendly visitors provide social visits for Holocaust Survivors and other seniors who are socially isolated and would benefit from the interaction. Volunteers are matched 1-on-1 with a senior client you would visit and build a caring relationship with. Activities range from conversations, sharing stories, looking at photos, reading aloud, playing a card game, etc. Friendly visits are conducted in-person at the client's home.

Client speaks both English and Russian. Client is a Holocaust survivor.

2. Seeking a female volunteer who speaks both Russian and English for friendly visits to the client’s home. 86-year-old client lives in Reston, VA (zip code 20191). Client was a chief engineer in the former Soviet Union. Client enjoys engineering, art, and culture. The client is looking for someone to socialize with and also learn more about devices such as the iPhone and computer. The client speaks Russian and does not speak English. The client is a Holocaust survivor.

Make a Difference in a Student’s Life

Join EnCorps’ STEMx Tutors program to virtually tutor math to middle school students who are under-performing in Foundational Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. 

Shepherd’s Table is seeking volunteers to assist students in its Culinary Skills Training Program with life skills including study skills, job readiness,  resumes and job search skills.  We have immediate openings for volunteers, who will work with students for one or two hours per week, starting in mid-October.  Most classes will be held at Silver Spring United Methodist Church (8900 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD).  

The new Culinary Skills Training Program provides community members facing multiple barriers, such as low wages, a lack of real-life skills, or a lack of opportunities, with a path to pursue a career in the food service industry.  Students attend 12 weeks of culinary and life skills training, followed by a 4-week externship.  Volunteers will assist culinary skills students with job search skills including resumes and online applications. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

·                  Teaching, training, or facilitation experience, particularly with adults

·                  2 years' experience working with adults who have had a wide variety of life experiences

·                  Empathy, patience, flexibility

·                  Experience assisting unemployed or underemployed adults with resume development and job search skills.

Friendly Visitor: 1-on-1 socialization visits to a senior clients’ home done at least twice a month. Volunteer will need to email brief, few sentence reports to both volunteer coordinator and the clients’ care manager after visits.

Client likes literature, philosophy, the Bible, history, tech news and innovations. Client used to be an engineer in the former Soviet Union, likes physics and math. Client is a Holocaust survivor.

Regarding how we will track and verify SSL hours:

--- Students will track their volunteer hours by making a copy of the following template. The document must be titled following the template - (ex: “John Smith_2021-2022 Time Collection”). On the first row list your full name. On the second row, please state if you are applying for the PVSA award.

--- After each class, document the date, the duration and the preparation time of the class. The default total class preparation time is the same as the duration of the class. (Ex. If your class is 40 minutes long, you enter 40 minutes for the class preparation). 

--- If your preparation time is more than the default time, PLE and all its staff reserve the right to view your lesson plans. After reviewing all materials you created in preparation and a possible interview, we determine if the preparation time logged is appropriate or if it should be adjusted based on length, amount, and quality of material. We generally do not award more than 2 hours of preparation time. You will retain copyright over your plans. 

--- Any orientation, training and meeting times will also be counted toward your volunteer time. Please enter the event name, date, and duration. Please be aware preparation time is not applicable to this circumstance (ex: New faculty online orientation, 4/21/2010, 1 hour). 

--- We will send certificates of verified volunteer hours and complete volunteer forms (SSL, NHS, etc.) upon request. 

--- All other forms of volunteering (eg. advertisement, management, newsletter writing, general curriculum development) will be tracked on an hour-for-hour basis the amount of time served when supervised. If items are completed without live supervision, they are reviewed on a case by case basis. Most curriculum development, newsletters, and proposals written will be awarded 1-2 hours, based on length and quality.

Are you creative? Do you enjoy creating short videos to provide entertainment and lifelong learning opportunities? Do you love helping others? This could be a great opportunity for you!

Create recorded content for older adults to enjoy. Many of these older adults are aging in place or isolated. Content must be family-friendly and will be available for older adult clients to view. 

Videos will provide opportunities for learning, enjoyment, and entertainment and could genuinely make people’s day and improve mood and overall quality of life.

We Need Your Help! A Call for Creative, Recorded Video Content for our Clients

One wonderful way that volunteers can get involved in supporting our senior clients is by providing recorded video content to add to our video library. Many of our clients are aging in place and it helps stimulate them to utilize media platforms for entertainment, enrichment, and lifelong learning. One of our goals is to continue to expand our library of recorded content for our clients. Please review this entire document carefully for requirements and how the process works. I have included some tips and tutorials under the resources section. We appreciate your time and consideration of doing this!

Required Guidelines, Policies and Filming Suggestions-Please Review

-Speak clearly, enunciate, and speak a bit slower than you normally do. Providing some pauses in between topics or portions of your presentation can help the viewer digest the information.

-Please do not share your last name or any additional personal information about yourself or anyone else during your videos. For example, if you are narrating or leading a video you could say, “Hi, my name is (your first name) and today I will show you around (name of location).”

-Please do not just speak to the camera. Options to enhance your video include showing the camera objects, sharing your screen to display text and visuals, showing the camera scenic views/displays, etc.

-Please make sure your sound levels are good and you have good lighting. Filming outdoors if audio levels are ok can help with the quality of the lighting.

-These videos are better if done generically, so that people can view them anytime. No need to mention the date you are filming, events that are upcoming, or any possible limiting factors like that. Keep things generic, broad and open-ended, and focus on the task at hand of entertaining and informing the viewer.

Video Categories, Topics and Ideas:

Here are some options for types of videos you can create.

PET TALKS: Kids can create and share short documentaries about their pets. Education is provided as information about the animal (breed, diet, exercise). For seniors this would engage their memory process to think about pets they had growing up (or have now), while providing educational and soothing material. (please make sure video is approximately 5 minutes long).

WALKING TOURS: Could be done by people of all ages, including high school and college students. Create walking tours featuring a town, local history, an art gallery, museum, and/or some type of attraction. Information about the history of the location or unique insight about what is being shown is key. If at a museum, selections from the display placards could be read. Unique insight, relevant stories and other anecdotes are encouraged. This will allow homebound seniors to explore and/or revisit their local town or learn about a new destination. Videos could be local, national, or international destinations. (Approximately 15 minutes long).

MUSIC PERFORMANCES: Volunteers could create recorded videos of them performing music. It could be performances with musical instruments, singing, or both! Performance experience required please. Experienced performers preferred. Solo, small group, or ensemble performances welcome. Please be mindful of the acoustics of the setting you are in and test out the volume of your sound to ensure that it is at an appropriate level. (5 minutes-30 minutes).

LECTURES/PRESENTATIONS:

Option to create a recorded lecture for a class project/teaching opportunity/subject that you have knowledge or expertise in. Slides, pictures, clips, etc. are strongly encouraged to be utilized by the presenter. (10-45 minutes long).

Some options within this category could include:

-Visual art demonstration

-Show off your collection! Explain when you started collecting and some of your favorites!

-Cooking demonstration (please include a disclaimer at the beginning of your video. Example disclaimer: “this video is for educational purposes. Please only try cooking if you have appropriate safety measures in place and assistance from another person.”

-Magic show (card tricks, juggling, etc.). Option to show how trick is done too!

-History lesson

-Guided meditation or sound meditation

-Short story reading (please display text on the screen also while reading, if possible. Short stories are often available to view online. You could share your screen, enlarge the text, and record that way if possible). The presenter is welcome and encouraged to share their brief analysis of the story after they read it.

-Theater performance

-Talent show

-Narrated slideshow about a trip you went on

-Gardening

-Dance performance

-Poetry

-Trivia or mind challenge (example: Ask a trivia question, wait 15 seconds, then give the answer, repeat)

-Language lesson (with text visuals on screen). Even English language lessons are helpful as some of our clients have a desire to practice or improve their English.

-Basic technology training steps (simplified, focusing on one device, visuals and text incorporated)

CSF youth programs offer after school and summer enrichment programs that include core programming of homework assistance, reading and math tutoring, computer instruction, journaling and public speaking, as well as services tailored to the resident’s needs as well as other educational and recreational sessions identified to meet and expand the exposure needs of the youth. Adult and Senior morning program offers a variety of services that included fill out forms, computer training, exercise class, arts/crafts, bingo, Manna bread distribution, Senior Brown Bag, Manna Food Boxes, and monthly health workshops. The requirements for our volunteers are to be willing to help with any task need it, also background check will apply to teenagers and adults.

o Qualification: One-on-One training to assist aspiring nurses to prepare for the TEAS (Test Essential Academic Skills) test. R.N or Nursing degree. Teaching experience would be a plus. The volunteer will meet clients via zoom or other meeting platforms. The duration of time tutoring is between 4 to 5 months. As well as the client's needs. Tutoring and prep time 3 to 5 hours a week.

CareerCatchers is a workforce development nonprofit in Montgomery County that that does intense career and job search counseling for the underserved. During this downtime, many of our clients are doing online training in subjects such as Microsoft Office, health and allied sciences, and business. We need volunteers to help with basic setup and general support by doing the following:

CareerCatchers will provide detailed instructions, Zoom training, and backup.

Volunteer requirements: basic Web understanding, good communications skills, and a willingness to help.

Come as you can to help 1:1 tutor kids or work on homework Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday anytime between 3:30 and 6 pm. Kids grades 3-8 work on homework, online math games, or Academy assignments in STEM or literacy. Also try partner reading to work with a child on their vocabulary or learning how to read.

Weekly: The Cambodian Buddhist Society Cultural Committee (CBSCC) host Sunday classes from, September to May for individuals who are interested learning the Cambodian dance, music and language. This opportunity not only exposes volunteers the Cambodian culture, volunteers can use and/or learn various skills by volunteering their time for CBSCC. Volunteers can 

Applicant must provide tutoring service, in conjunction with staff, to one or more students in one or more academic subjects or in organizational or life skills (i.e. resume writing, interviewing). Tutors will work with middle and high school students, our largest need is for math tutors. Must be available to meet at least one hour per week between the hours of 4:00- 5:15 Monday through Thursday. Patience is needed. Must be able to commit to on-going assignments. Ability to tutor in one or several subjects, and communicate knowledge of said subjects. Desire to learn and work with students who are emotionally disturbed or have experience working with this population. Must have a sound respect and understanding of confidentiality. Being able to work with emotionally disturbed children and provide patients and understanding through tutoring our children. Orientation and in-service training will be provided by volunteer services. Certain assignments may require education or training in subject area.

We're looking for individuals who have experience and expertise in various college courses to serve as virtual tutors for our Scholars. Generation Hope Scholars are teen parents that are pursuing a college education to make a better life for themselves and their child.  

Time Commitment:  As needed, typically once a week for about an hour. You will be contacted by our Tutoring Coordinator when your help is needed.

About Generation Hope: Generation Hope is the only community-based nonprofit organization in the DMV region focused on college completion and early childhood success for two populations that are dismissed regarding their potential and dreams for the future: teen parents and their children. Founded in 2010, Generation Hope selects teen mothers and teen fathers who have displayed academic achievement and a desire to go to college to become Scholars in the Generation Hope Scholar Program.  Once accepted, Generation Hope provides each Scholar with three supports that we believe increase the likelihood that they will obtain their college degree; up to $2,400 per year in tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring, and case management. Additionally, Scholars receive an increased network of support from the extended family that the program provides to them and to their young children. This support stays with Scholars until they earn their two or four-year degree. Our tutors are a critical piece of this support, as they help make it possible for our Scholars to thrive in higher education.

Looking for a tutor for high school age boys to meet once a week in a group setting. Part of our focus is to prepare the boys for college.  Some are interested in SAT prep, while others have specific classes they need some help with.  Most boys are in the 11th grade.  They are a great group of guys but you will need to bring a bit of patience with you.  Please dont hesitate to contact us with any questions.
