Who We Are
Our mission is " Empowering all to enjoy, share, and preserve the hiking experience." We envision a world where everyone feels welcome in the American hiking community and has permanent access to meaningful hiking, including urban, frontcountry, and backcountry opportunities. We will achieve this vision by empowering all communities to enjoy, share, and preserve the hiking experience; advocating for the protection and expansion of hiking spaces; fostering trail stewardship; and collaborating with partners whose strengths are complementary.
What Volunteers Do
American Hiking is the only national advocacy organization serving the hiking community. We run advocacy campaigns that serve the needs of the diverse hiking community and protect public lands, activating our members and followers, supporting grassroots campaigns, and advocating to Congress and the Federal Government. In support of our mission, we also run volunteer trail service programs across the country -- Volunteer Vacations, Alternative Break (for college students), and National Trails Day.
Volunteers in our headquarters in Silver Spring, MD assist the Operational Support Coordinator and the Finance and Office Manager in preparing mailings for our members.
